All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term “art appreciation”.
Bringley is not the only Met staffer to write about the institution. But Bringley’s “guard’s-eye view” is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity. After his brother Tom’s death in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which “I was happy to be going nowhere”. He explains, “I had lost someone. I did not wish to move on from that. In a sense, I didn’t wish to move at all.”
All the Beauty in the World offers well-chosen cases about the museum to support Bringley’s personal tale. The Met opened in 1880 and has since expanded to more than 2.5 million square feet — “the size of about 3,000 average New York apartments”. The “salmon run of visitors” that goes up the Grand Staircase every morning when the museum opens adds up to a crowd of nearly 7 million visitors a year.
As interesting as these facts are, it’s Bringley’s reflections on dozens of individual paintings, photographs, sculptures and ancient artifacts that turn this book into a tribute (致敬) to the power of art. I think that “sometimes we need permission to stop and adore things, and a work of art gives us that”. In a Vermeer portrait of a dozing maidservant, he is moved to see that the artist captured “that feeling we sometimes have that a private setting possesses a holiness of its own. It was my constant feeling in Tom’s hospital room.”
As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not “about art, but from it” and attaining peace into art. This is art appreciation at a deep level.
24. Why did Patrick Bringley quit his job as a journalist
A. He found it stressful and meaningless. B. He suffered from the loss of his brother.
C. He wanted to enjoy more free time. D. He hoped to write a memoir about art.
25. What does the underlined expression “salmon run” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to
A. A large crowd of visitors moving together. B. A special event held at the museum.
C. The steady flow of artworks into the Met. D. The natural scenery around the museum.
26. What moved Bringley when he saw the Vermeer portrait
A. The maidservant’s peaceful look. B. The advanced painting skills of Vermeer.
C. The private and sacred atmosphere reflected. D. The maidservant’s experience similar to his brother’s.
27. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Learn from Art, Find Peace B. Appreciate Life, Know Art
C. Little-known Facts about the Met D. Inner Worlds of Famous Artists

One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.
The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
28. What does the author imply about the advertisements mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. They are completely honest about the destinations.
B. They are misleading about the real appeal of the places.
C. They successfully show the rapid development of tourism.
D. They accurately describe the natural beauty of Pacific islands.
29. The example of Nepal is used in Paragraph 2 to show that ________.
A. tourist advertisements are usually dishonest and misleading
B. untouched natural paradises are very popular among tourists
C. rapid tourism development may damage natural resources
D. Nepal is rich in wildlife and rare flowers
30. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text
A. Increased opportunities. B. Improved work-life balance.
C. Transformed livelihood. D. Enhanced social status.
31. What may determine the future of tourism according to the text
A. The promotion of cultural diversity. B. The exploration of new destinations.
C. The guarantee of market stability. D. The management of responsible tourism.
D
Jorg Muller, an ecologist at the University of Würzburg, with his colleagues, proposes a way to measure the biodiversity — listen to the jungle by AI, in a paper published in Nature Communications.
The rainforests are very important and always alive with the sounds of animals, which is useful to ecologists. When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal calls is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears. Muller’s idea was to apply the principle of smartphone apps which can identify the sounds of birds, bats and mammals to conservation work.
The researchers took recordings from across 43 sites in the rainforests. Some sites were relatively primitive, old-growth forests. Others were areas that had just been cleared for pasture (牧场) recently. And some other original forests had been cleared but then abandoned, allowing themselves to regrow. The various calls were identified by an expert, and then used to construct a list of the species present. As expected, the longer the land had been free from agricultural activity, the greater biodiversity it hosted. Then it was the computer’s turn. “We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts,” says Dr. Muller.
Of course, not everything in a rainforest makes a noise. Therefore, Dr. Muller and his colleagues used light traps to catch night-flying insects, and DNA analysis to identify them. They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.
Besides measuring the biodiversity, the results are also expected to be applied to outside ecology departments. Under pressure from their customers, firms like L’Oreal, a make-up company, and Shell, an oil firm, have been spending money on forest restoration projects around the world. Dr. Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.
32. What makes listening to animal calls a better method for measuring biodiversity compared with tracking footprints
A. It requires less professional knowledge to operate.
B. It can identify more species than the traditional method.
C. It saves time and relies less on expert judgment.
D. It can be applied to all rainforest environments.
33. What can we infer from the research on the 43 rainforest sites
A. Old-growth forests are the only sites with rich biodiversity.
B. The AI’s ability to identify animal sounds is superior to experts in some aspects.
C. Restored forests will eventually have the same biodiversity as old-growth ones.
D. Agricultural activities have a negative impact on rainforest biodiversity.
34. Why did the researchers conduct experiments on night-flying insects
A. To fill the gap in AI’s ability to identify quiet species.
B. To verify that noisy species’ diversity reflects overall biodiversity.
C. To study the relationship between night-flying insects and noisy animals.
D. To find a more accurate way to measure the diversity of quiet species.
35. What can be inferred about the forest restoration projects according to the last paragraph
A. New approach offers a standard way to check restoration effect.
B. Big firms voluntarily run forest protection projects.
C. Ecology departments have long monitored their progress.
D. They have obtained sponsors’ promised results.

Closing your eyes to hear better might be a big mistake
When people try to focus on a faint sound, many instinctively (本能地) shut their eyes. The common belief is that removing visual distractions allows the brain to concentrate more fully on hearing, boosting sensitivity. ____36____
A study published in JASA set out to test whether closing the eyes truly improves hearing under noisy conditions. ____37____ They wanted to find out how visual input affects the ability to detect sounds.
In the experiment, participants listened to sounds through headphones while background noise played. Their task was to adjust the volume until each sound was just barely audible over the noise. ____38____ First, they closed their eyes; then they opened their eyes to look at a blank screen, a still image related to the sound, and finally a matching video.
The results went against a widely held assumption. ____39____ On the contrary, seeing a dynamic video corresponding to the sound significantly improved hearing sensitivity. Closing the eyes made it harder to pick out faint sounds in noisy settings, while relevant visual input provided a clear advantage.
To understand why this happens, researchers used EEG to track brain activity. They found that closing the eyes shifts the brain into a state that increases how strongly it filters incoming information. ____40____ It can also suppress the target sounds participants are trying to hear.
A. This heightened filtering does not just reduce background noise.
B. However, this approach does not always work, especially in noisy environments.
C. Researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University led the study.
D. The experiment included several different visual conditions.
E. They found that closing one’s eyes actually impairs the ability to detect these sounds.
F. Many people think closing eyes can help them hear better in daily life.
G. Visual input can always improve people’s hearing ability in any situation.

I am Tia. The corner of 71st Street and Prospect was my corner. To me, it was like a wide-open treasure box. When my sisters and brothers were chasing each other, and I felt like the walls of our apartment were about to burst, I ran down to my corner. My sneakers pounded the pavement, then they took me on a flying leap into a sea of green. I waded through the tall grass, my jeans swished with every step. Butterflies and crickets (蟋蟀) scared up at my feet. I sat down, closed my eyes and listened to their songs. The grass smelt clean and fresh. The sun warmed my skin, and I wondered why I was the only one who’s thankful for this place.
Some folks didn’t respect it. They passed by all day long and never took the time to peek inside. They even threw trash from their car windows. There was junk here- old chairs, a broken bicycle wheel. I worried that soon there would be more garbage than birds.
One day, the city announced a plan to pave it over for a parking lot. Heartbroken, I ran to my room and slammed the door. “It just needs some cleaning up, that’s all. How come they can’t see that ” Out my window I could see my corner. Mama knocked softly at the door and stepped in. “Tia, you see something in that corner that most folks don’t. You got to make them see what you see. Make some noise about it.”
Early the next morning, I dragged a chair down to the corner. On a card-board I painted NO PARKING LOT! SAVE OUR NATURE! in large letters. I sat down and waited. Most people in the community didn’t pay any attention to me. My effort seemed in vain, attracting more ridicule (嘲笑) than support. I swallowed hard and felt my sign drop to the ground.

答案】例文
Dear Jim,
Since you asked about the Red Cross First Aid Club, let me tell you something about it. The club was founded last year to promote health education among students. So far, it has attracted over 100 students.
I have gained a lot from the club. I have learned essential life-saving skills that will be useful in emergencies. More importantly, the club has made me aware of the importance of staying calm and acting bravely when others need help. By participating in various activities, I have not only improved my own abilities but also made friends with others.
What clubs are you in I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】 Paragraph 1: The sign caught the eye of a local journalist, Sara, who smiled and walked over to me. “That’s a brave stand you’re taking. Mind telling me what this place means to you ” she asked kindly. Her warm tone encouraged me to pour out my heart. I told her about the butterflies, the crickets’ songs, the clean smell of grass, and my fear of losing this secret garden to cold concrete. Sara listened intently, taking notes and occasionally snapping photos of the corner and my determined, though slightly tearful, face. She said “I think your story could inspire others. Great job speaking up for what you love.”
Paragraph 2: The news reported by Sara spread throughout the community. The next day, my story and a picture of me holding the sign appeared in the local newspaper. To my surprise, many neighbors read it and started seeing the corner with new eyes. They noticed the wildflowers they had never stopped to admire and the birdsong that was often drowned out by traffic. Over the following weekend, a small group of volunteers showed up with gloves and trash bags. Together, we cleaned up the old chairs and the broken bicycle wheel. Standing there, watching people work together, I realized that Mama was right.
