When people ask about my experience of learning Cantonese,I recount a journey driven by unending curiosity and a strong desire to connect with a dynamic culture.
Growing up in a Russian family,my fascination with languages grew thanks to my father,a language expert. It’s during a cultural appreciation class in junior high that I was first introduced to the world of Hong Kong films, famous for their characteristic action-packed dramas and storytelling styles. However, what really amazed me was the uniqueness of the language,Cantonese, which sparked an urgent need within me to explore it and the rich culture behind. This marked the beginning of a thrilling linguistic journey.
Learning Cantonese posed challenges, such as unfamiliar characters, complex tones, and different grammar structures, yet I persevered.Immersed in textbooks and available online courses,I practiced the tones everyday until my pronunciation flowed naturally.Cantonese dramas and music also played a role in familiarizing me with its rhythm.
To truly grasp the essence of Cantonese,I knew that studying alone wasn’t enough—I needed firsthand experience. So,I took a gap year to pack my bags for Hong Kong,a city featuring the lively heartbeat of Cantonese culture.Buried in its busy streets and daily conversations, from casual chats to food ordering,I found myself enveloped in a linguistic wonderland.Within a few months,my Cantonese proficiency flourished, fueling a surge of confidence.
My explorations extended beyond the streets.I enrolled in formal language classes that offered professional guidance.Through hard work,I successfully completed all the courses in Cantonese Linguistics. From then on,I’ve been passionately committed to spreading the Cantonese culture, ensuring its richness reaches a wider audience.
Today,I continue my Cantonese voyage with unflagging enthusiasm. It has transformed into more than just a linguistic pursuit;it grants me a passport to sincere connections, profound insights, and heartfelt admiration for its one-of-a-kind culture.

For Cruz, who grew up in Peru’s mountainous region of Cuzco, fog represents a massive opportunity. As a boy,he had to hike for more than an hour every day across rough hills to collect water from the nearest source. But over time,he realized that during the rainy season, drops of water would gather in the large leaves of banana trees. One day,he and his father built a canal system with the leaves to collect water. He moved to Lima at the age of 25.
Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering,Cruz set up El Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005.The idea was to deploy the method he learned in his hometown on a larger,better-adapted scale, which would provide free, independently sourced and easily accessible water to those who needed it most.He began installing(安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s.The nonprofit provided the materials for free, and the community built the infrastructure(基础设施) themselves.
At the highest point of Los Tres Miradores, there is a curious set of large structures that is like a fleet of ships in the sky. They are so-called “fog catchers”.The 40 fog catchers there provide enough water for 180 families, whether to bathe, clean, drink(after being filtered at home) or to irrigate crops on small garden patches.
Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions.German researcher Lummerich says,“They are cheap, easy to construct. In a world searching for water supply systems,it is one important approach that can make an essential difference locally. It could make the difference between having water and not having water available.” There are some issues, however. For one,fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. At the same time, fog catchers must be properly cleaned and maintained to stay effective. Most crucially, appropriate climate conditions are required.Fog isn’t everywhere.
28.Why did Cruz set up El Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005
A.To raise money for the poorest residents.
B.To construct the infrastructure for the city.
C.To build a canal system for his hometown.
D.To offer water to people who need it badly.
29.What does the underlined word “deploy” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Employ. B.Abandon.
C.Design. D.Explore.
30.What is the problem with fog catchers in urban areas
A.High expenses. B.Space limitation.
C.Technical faults. D.Public opposition.
31.Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text
A.A Practical Application of Fog Catchers in Cities
B.The Development of a Climate Organization
C.A Creative Method of Improving Water Supply
D.The Importance of Infrastructure Construction

I want to be successful. That person is successful. So that person can teach me how to be successful. This theory helps explain the springing up of podcasts, books and speeches devoted to the secrets of high performance. It is one reason why executive-leadership courses draw on case studies from well beyond business: politics, the army and even the Roman Empire. And it has been much apparent before and during the Olympics, which ended in Paris on August 11th,2025.
Executives(主管) attend events in which Olympians describe what makes them successful. What can CEOs learn from the world’s best athletes Actually, there are threads that connect sporting success and business success.Getting to the Games requires 100% commitment and hard work.Sporting excellence rests on the efforts of multiple people, not just a single individual. The people on the platform in Paris are competitive and resilient(适应力强).It is true that all these things are helpful in the workplace.
If some of the similarities between sports and the workplace are cliché(老生常谈),many of the differences are too big to be helpful.Sporting events have clear standards for winning or losing; most jobs lack this.A four-year Olympic cycle building to a match that may last only seconds has few similar examples in business.
The athletes who win medals at the Games are blessed not just with determination but also natural gifts. The job of managers is partly to discover such superstars, but their real task is getting the best out of a workforce whose talents will vary and whose jobs will not depend as heavily on genetics(遗传).“As soon as I saw that kid log on,I knew he was special.” are words you do not often hear.
Whether similarities or differences, these are not really why people listen to the podcasts or turn up at the events. They want a simple recipe for success. And they want to hear what it is like to run faster or jump higher than anyone else. They want to hear stories that can have no practical value back in the office. If they can pretend it’s good for their career,so much the better.
32.Why does the author mention the theory in paragraph 1
A.To prove a point.
B.To lead in the topic.
C.To present a fact.
D.To explain a concept.
33.Why do CEOs turn to Olympians
A.To seek business partners.
B.To get the secrets to success.
C.To prove the truth of a theory.
D.To expand their social circle.
34.What is the author’s attitude to learning from Olympians
A.Unclear. B.Favorable.
C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.What Can Olympians Teach CEOs
B.How Do CEOs Differ from Olympians
C.What Is the Recipe for Business Success
D.Why Are Olympians More Successful than CEOs

How to Learn Several Languages at a Time
Learning a new language is a challenging and wonderfully rewarding experience. At some point, you may find yourself needing or wanting to learn several languages at the same time. 36 However,it also allows you to challenge your brain and take advantage of the similarities and differences between the languages you’re learning.
37 If you have a choice, choose to learn one language that is easier for you,and another or others that are more difficult. An easier language will be one that is similar to your native language or another language that you know, while a more difficult language will be one that is less similar.
Make one language your priority. 38 This way,at the end of your hard work, you are more likely to be skilled in at least one of your languages, rather than only knowing a small amount of each of them.
Translate between the languages you’re learning. One way to keep all the languages you are learning active in your mind is to try translating between them, rather than translating them back to your native language. 39
Add all of the languages to a language-learning app or website.Several language-learning apps and websites, such as Duolingo,Memrise,Clozemaster,Anki and Lingvist allow you to add several languages at once. 40 This way, when you are on-the-go,you have quick access to a way to study any of the languages you are trying to learn.
A.This process can be very difficult.
B.Choose languages that vary in difficulty.
C.Study the same topic in all of the languages.
D.You can use a website to find a group like this.
E.This can help you understand the languages on a deeper level.
F.It is helpful to give one of the languages the most time and attention.
G.Download an app,and then add all of your languages,if they are available on it.

This year,I felt very nervous about my English class because I am an international student and this was my first time studying in the UK.I knew I wouldn’t know anyone in the class, which made me a bit anxious. But since I didn’t know anyone,I had the chance to do something I almost enjoy as much as socializing—people-watching.
There was another international student in the class, and she was one of the most interesting girls. She sat right behind me.She was always laughing, chatting non-stop,and seemed so happy all the time. She was also very friendly and one of the few people in the class who tried to greet me.She was the kind of person you would like, even if you didn’t really know her.
At the end of the academic year,we were assigned a big project. The requirements for this project were quite open:we had to read an article, then read or watch related materials, and finally give a class presentation based on what we had learned. The presentations were scheduled for the last month of the semester.Since everyone chose different topics and presented them in different ways,we saw some of the most interesting and diverse presentations I’d ever seen.
The girl sitting behind me gave her presentation in the last few days. She walked up to the podium(讲台) and told everyone that she had once read an article about not fitting in while living in a foreign country, because she herself had gone through that kind of struggle.Since it was too difficult to talk about it directly with us,she showed us parts of her diary, sharing her feelings of being homesick and struggling to adjust to a new environment, and how she overcame these difficulties.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Almost everyone was moved at the end of her presentation.
She was relieved and her mood lightened when she returned to her seat.

M:I’m with Karina Rogers, who’s training at a top restaurant to be a chef.Karina, where did your interest in cooking come from
W:Well, both my parents prepared food in their hotel kitchen, and although I helped them a bit,I never enjoyed that much. In fact,it wasn’t until I worked for two weeks at a restaurant that I realized cooking was for me.Before that,I’d just make salads for myself.
M:And the restaurant was really pleased with you.
W:Yes,and that gave me the confidence to enter a cooking competition. I wasn’t among the winners, but the judges really liked what I made.
M:Then a top chef noticed your cooking.
W:Yes,and he gave me a Saturday job at his restaurant. My first task was to prepare a salad. No one had told me the food was for someone famous, but it seemed she really liked it,so as a result the chef offered to train me full-time at the restaurant.
M: And do you eat out in your free time
W:I don’t do that anymore.
M:Because it is expensive
W:No. On my days off,I just like eating at home. It’s a good chance to be with my parents!

C.Study the same topic in all of the languages.
D.You can use a website to find a group like this.

(2025·广东汕尾高二上期末)
参考范文
Almost everyone was moved at the end of her presentation. Her courage to share such personal experiences touched us deeply. It made me realize that the challenges I had been facing as an international student were not unique to me.Many of us,even though we came from different countries and cultures, had gone through similar struggles of homesickness, loneliness, and the feeling of not fitting in.I could see that her words helped others in the class feel more connected and understood. We all began to look at each other not as strangers but as individuals who shared common experiences.
She was relieved and her mood lightened when she returned to her seat.I could tell that her presentation had helped her let go of some of the weight she had been carrying. She smiled at me as I turned around, and for the first time since I’d met her,I could see a calm, peaceful expression on her face.It was as if she had finally found a way to make peace with her experience and was no longer burdened by it.I decided to have a talk with her.I felt good to share my own feelings with her,and at that moment,I realized how much easier it was to connect with others when we opened up about our struggles.
