Developing ideas
In this lesson, you will:
1.understand the listening material and grasp the key information.
2.learn that some words have different stress positions when used as different parts of speech.
3.talk about what you have learnt about the secrets of nature.
Read and say.

Nature is full of secrets. They are waiting to be explained. These include black holes, the beginning of the universe, the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot. These secrets awaken our curiosity and drive scientists to better understand the wonders around us.
Now let’s move on to our listening lesson to learn about another natural secret!
Listen to the talk and choose the correct topic. Then answer.

Guide: Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest! Now, I'd like to present a special river to you. Since ancient times, people have talked about a boiling river in the rainforest. Many people laugh at this story, but in fact, it's true! The water can be as hot as 86°C. People here cook with it, clean with it and make tea with it! There's no need to make a fire! The water only cools down after heavy rain. Then people go swimming in it.
I think it's one of the most amazing wonders of the rainforest.
What’s the speaker’s opinion
Work in pairs. Introduce the river to your partner.

Listen again. Then talk about how the speaker discuss possibilities.
Talking about possibilities
Could, may and might are used to talk about possibilities. Words such as maybe and perhaps are used, too. We can also use the structure It's certain / likely / possible that...

Guide: Ancient people here thought that the sun makes the river hot.
Boy: It's possible, right There's a lot of sunshine here.
Guide: Actually, it's unlikely for the sun to heat the river that much. Just think of outdoor swimming pools. Would the water get to 86°C in summer
Girl: You're right. But how about volcanoes Perhaps the river passes a volcano and becomes hot
Guide: Good guess! But I'm afraid that's not the reason. The nearest volcano is about 700 kilometres away.
Girl: I have another idea! Maybe there are some chemicals in the water. They can produce heat. I've studied them at school.
Guide: That's possible. But scientists haven't found such chemicals in the river yet. They need to do more research…
Work in pairs. Choose one unsolved secret of nature and talk about possible explanations.
A:Have you heard of...
B:Yes, it's very strange. I'm curious about the possible reasons.
A:Perhaps it's because...
Useful expressions
·The truth may be...
·It is likely that...
·Perhaps it's because...
·It's probably a result of...
·There is a (strong) possibility that...
·It's possible that...
·There's a chance that...
A: Have you heard of crop circles(麦田怪圈)
B: Yes, it's very strange. I'm curious about the possible reasons.
A: Perhaps it's because some people make them as a fun trick.
B: Hmm, it's unlikely that all crop circles are tricks—some look too neat and perfect. It is likely that they're caused by strong winds or special natural forces
A: That sounds possible! Do you have another idea
B: Well, some people say it's from aliens. But there's a small chance that aliens would do this—it's hard to believe.
A: Yeah, that's not very likely. There's a chance that scientists will find the real reason later!
B: I hope so—this mystery is really interesting!
First, we FOUND a mystery (the Boiling River).
Then, we COLLECTED facts.
Next, we DISCUSSED ideas and possibilities.
Finally, we UNDERSTOOD that not all mysteries have one answer. Different guesses help science grow!
Talk about what you have learnt about the secrets of nature in this section.
Must do:
Make a list of useful phrases from today. Write at least 2 example sentences for each group:
Giving Opinions: I think that..., In my opinion...
Choose to do:
Choose one natural mystery from page 73 or another one you like.Make a simple "Mystery Card" in English.
