In 2019, I decided to get a job, so I sent my CV (简历) to every shop and cafe in my village. Luckily, I was 46 an interview at a local restaurant.
The interview went well, but before I left, the manager asked me to try out serving a customer. To my horror, I couldn’t 47 a word on the menu. The customer stood impatiently as I froze. Unsurprisingly, I received a 48 email the next morning. All my dreams were destroyed.
I was born with poor eyesight. As a child, I struggled to see the board in class, even from the front row. I 49 this by copying notes from my friends. As I got older, I buried the secret even more. I 50 tried to escape from my poor eyesight.
However, when I got back from that job interview, I made the first step toward dealing with life with a disability — 51 . From my doctor, I learned that glasses wouldn’t 52 and that I would never be allowed to drive. Each new detail felt like a fresh blow. For the first time, I 53 my official diagnosis (诊断) — visual disability. To my surprise, I was filled with 54 .
The next step was 55 the independence I’d developed over the years. I had to learn to ask for help, something I’d always avoided.
As I started reaching out for help, the love and support of my friends moved me. They 56 my confidence so that I no longer felt 57 to ask for assistance: When I asked strangers to help read cafe menus or cross the road, I was surprised at how kind they were.
Today, I’m much more confident than ever. Though my vision can’t be changed, I treat every 58 as a new challenge. I speak up when something isn’t 59 and ask for adjustments. If I feel shy about my vision, how will over two million people in Britain with sight loss 60 I’m not just speaking up for myself but for the millions like me.

Early spring in the Northwest often brings surprises. The weather can turn 76 quickly, threatening both humans and wildlife with sudden snowstorms.
Every spring, migratory (迁徙的) birds take advantage of a large pond near my home as a 77 stop on the way to their summer habitat. This year, a group of scaups, a type of diving duck, joined the usual geese. They spent days there, seeking food. Then, a snowstorm 78 , followed by a night of extreme cold.
The next morning, I looked out in 79 , almost all the birds fleeing overnight, except one single female scaup. She was swimming 80 in a shrinking circle of open water. It appeared that her movement and body heat were stopping the ice from 81 over entirely.
However, as the temperature continued to 82 , the open water got smaller. Her movements became slower and weaker. Having fought with her might, she was almost on the edge of giving in to the bitter cold. I observed with growing 83 as she finally stopped moving.
And then it happened: Two more ducks suddenly 84 in the sky, landing next to her still body. Soon, others arrived. The water began to 85 with their splashing and diving. 86 , the circle of open water started to expand again. Energized by her companions’ 87 , the lone female slowly revived.
Without her friends, this little duck wouldn’t have 88 another night. She, 89 , had kept that area of water open, so her friends had a place to stop and refresh themselves. It serves as a(n) 90 that sometimes, a tiny action, or even just being there for another, can make all the difference.

I’m old enough to remember when air travel was a pleasure and an adventure. But I don’t recall exactly when it became a boring routine. From frequently canceled (取消) 106 and endless fees to complex security, it’s no wonder I now find the 107 troublesome.
On one such recent flight, I had a stopover (中途停留) at a(n) 108 in North Carolina, which is full of rushing 109 . But in the corner of the waiting hall existed a long row of rocking chairs. During two-hour wait, I immediately 110 one and began to rock as I observed the passing scene. Once I was comfortably in my rocker, I was struck by how 111 everyone else was moving.
There was also a grand piano on the other side of the waiting hall. An older man 112 , sat down, and began to play. I no longer heard the 115 of the crowd, but only the beautiful music.
People began to walk more slowly. Many 116 to keep their eyes on the man. I rocked as he played, and I could not get enough of it. There was a tip jar on the piano, and I 117 as it gradually filled with bills.
My two-hour wait passed all too quickly, but the pianist played on. I had family waiting for me back, so I 118 and approached the piano. I 119 several bills and put them in the jar. I remarked, “My friend, thank you for helping me pass the time.” The player gave me an appreciative smile. I 120 him unwillingly, like a man hesitant to take leave of a loved one.

Ieoh Ming Pei was an honored Chinese-American architect. He designed many notable buildings around the world throughout his long professional 136 . The Hong Kong Bank of China Tower (BOC Tower) is one of his most famous works in Asia.
Pei was commissioned (委托) in 1982 by the Beijing-based Bank of China to 137 its headquarters in Hong Kong, but construction did not start until 1985. There were many reasons for the 138 . One of them was the huge challenges caused by the location. The relatively small land parcel (地块) was 139 on three sides by raised roadways 140 high-speed heavy traffic. Then there was its awkward trapezoidal (梯形) shape and the fact that the 141 also had a deep north-south height difference.
Another challenge was the unavoidable 142 of the BOC Tower with the neighboring Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters (HSBC), which was also being 143 . A spectacular building generously 144 , its architect Norman Foster was simply told to create “the best bank building in the world.” At that time it was also the world's most 145 building, costing $668 million. The Bank of China Tower's budget was about one fifth of the budget allowed by HSBC.
The Hong Kong government had promised HSBC that no tall buildings would ever be built in front of its headquarters. Besides, in 146 the site of the Bank of China and the harbor, there were already a few buildings over 70 meters tall 147 views.
Recognizing that going 148 was the only way to create a landmark, Pei came up with an architectural tower design that was simple, 149 , innovative, and upon its completion, the tallest building outside of America and the fourth tallest in the world.
After the Bank of China officially moved into the tower in 1991, famous architect and critic Peter Blake visited the building, and 150 it to be “probably the most innovative skyscraper structure built anywhere to date.” Now the tower has become one of the most important cultural icons for Hong Kong.
