1.读后续写
I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.

It was a bright Saturday in early March. Dad had recently promised he would “live healthier,” so Mum took him out for a walk in the park every weekend. After a slow, easy morning, Mum came downstairs and found the children glued to a cartoon. She turned off the TV and lowered her voice. “Listen,” she said, “I’m going to do something really special for Dad. If you hear anything, you must keep it secret.”
Lucy nodded at once, but her brother Max frowned (皱眉). “Dad’s birthday isn’t until late April,” he said. “Isn’t it a bit early to make a plan ” Mum paused, then explained that this year mattered more than usual — Dad was going to turn forty. “Forty ” Max said without thinking. “That’s... properly old!” Lucy tried not to laugh, but Mum even didn’t smile. She said she wanted to plan ahead, because she hoped to invite some of Dad’s old friends to give him a big surprise and make him feel truly celebrated.
That afternoon, Mum called Aunt May, whose small café had enough space for a gathering. Aunt May agreed happily. She also said she would bake a big cake and drop by to take some old photos for decorations in the next few days. Mum reminded the kids that Dad hated “troubling other people,” and that was exactly why the surprise needed to be gentle and well prepared.
For the next few days, Mum whispered on the phone, wrote lists, and hid shopping bags in the wardrobe (衣橱). The children tried hard to act normal. But one evening at dinner. Dad suddenly put down his chopsticks, rubbed his temple (太阳穴), and sighed. “I just remembered,” he said quietly. “I’m turning forty in April. Let’s not do anything. I’d rather pretend it isn’t happening.” Mum froze for a second, and the children exchanged worried looks. At that moment, saving them from having to reply, the doorbell rang. Mum rushed to open the door.

Carly frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a dumb idea,” Carly grumbled, mostly to herself.
“What’s that ” Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots and a wok.
“Nothing.” Carly mumbled. The girl had been irritated about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her. Carly sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Carly’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Carly was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Carly’s age. As she filled their glasses, Carly realized the twins were in her class. Carly ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Carly’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
“Honey, what are you doing back here We need you out front with the customers.”
“Mom, I don’t want to be out there. There are kids from school!”
“So ” her mother asked, “That’s good! Go take them some fortune cookies and say hello!” She clicked her tongue disapprovingly at Carly and disappeared out of the kitchen.
Carly frowned. She grabbed a handful of fortune cookies that they gave out after every meal, but first she tore open a wrapper and cracked a cookie open for herself. She popped a sweet, crunchy (酥脆的) piece in her mouth, and absently read the paper fortune it held.
“Many friends are found with a single smile,” it read.

4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
I started gardening when I was twelve. The reason I began may not have come from a love for nature. It was to annoy my parents. Back then, I was at that age when I liked to oppose everything, and going against my parents felt like a game. If they disliked something, that alone made me want to do it.
At that time, we had a big yard with a beautiful maple tree. But my mother often looked at this natural beauty with doubt. Those golden leaves seemed like a heap of rubbish to her, “Something else to clean up!” Seeing the neighbors busy gardening, my father also thought it was a waste of time. To him, useful work meant tasks that had a clear outcome, not getting one’s hands dirty and waiting for flowers that might not even grow. Our yard, in their eyes, was fine just as it was — tidy and easy to care for.
At that age, I often did the opposite of whatever my parents preferred! If gardening was something they didn’t like, then I was determined to start a garden! I secretly bought a packet of seeds with my pocket money, feeling a rush of secret excitement. This would be my silent act of opposition, my own small zone of rebellion (叛逆) right where they could see it.
I planted some lily seeds in the yard, but they didn’t sprout. Then I tried sunflower seeds and roses. To my surprise, I later saw the first rose begin to bloom. One by one, the flowers opened up beautifully. The sunflowers grew tall, turning their bright faces to follow the sun. I found myself watering them carefully and looking for new buds every day. Gradually, I was deeply moved by the beauty of the garden.

Shirley and her husband Leo ran a small restaurant near a cancer hospital. Thanks to the large number of medical staff and patients nearby, plus their clean and tasty dishes, the restaurant always had a stream of customers. Business was so good that they rarely had a moment to sit down during peak hours.
One Tuesday afternoon, a young man in his thirties walked in. Unlike other customers who headed straight for the tables, he hesitated by the door, looking anxious. Shirley noticed his unease and walked over with a smile. “Can I help you, sir ” she asked gently. The man took a deep breath and explained that his father, a lung cancer patient in the nearby hospital, had lost his appetite since getting sick. He refused most hospital meals and only ate food cooked by his family. The man begged Shirley to let him use the restaurant’s kitchen and utensils (器具) to make a meal for his dying father.
It was the first time Shirley had received such a request. She glanced at Leo, who nodded silently. Without hesitation, Shirley agreed. When the man finished cooking and asked how much he should pay, Shirley waved her hand. “No charge, ” she said softly. “Just hope your father likes the meal.” Grateful and excited, the man was left speechless.
After the man left, Leo sighed. “Cancer patients and their families are having such a tough time, ” he said. “If they can eat a home-cooked meal, it might make them feel a little better.” His words inspired an idea in Shirley: What if they let patients’ families use the kitchen and utensils to cook, and only charge a low cost Leo loved the idea immediately. They named this service “Anti-Cancer Kitchen” together. The next morning, they hung a bright logo (徽标) of “Anti-Cancer Kitchen” on the restaurant door. Then, they entered the kitchen and made meals for customers as usual.

“What are you writing ”
Sighing, I slammed my notebook shut. My sister Bethany, two years older than me, is always poking her nose into my business. “Nothing,” I replied. I didn’t tell her I was entering a writing competition in case I didn’t win. Bethany is always winning at her dancing competitions, Mum has lots of bowling trophies (奖杯), and Dad is the top player at his golf club. I started ballet lessons when I was younger, but I was always facing the wrong way and bumping into (撞) everyone. I’m even worse at sport.
But I do love English at school, especially writing stories. Ms. Susan is my favorite teacher and she suggested I enter this competition. I felt a warm light when she said she thought my stories were excellent.
“Is it your secret diary ” Bethany yawned, opening the fridge. Mum arrived, loaded with shopping bags. “Who’s keeping a secret diary ” “Nobody. I’m keeping a notebook as I want to be a writer,” I said, annoyed.
Bethany snorted (哼), “Now she thinks she’s going to be the next Shakespeare.” “Our Maisie maybe will be a famous writer. All her teachers praise her composition,” Mum leapt to my defence.
“Ms. Susan says I should write about what I know, so you’d better watch out,” I told Bethany darkly. Bethany took a bottle of milk from the fridge and bounded (跳跃着跑) upstairs and yelled, “I don’t want to be in your stupid story!” “Ignore her,” Mum said. “Keep going with your story.”
Weeks passed, and the memory of the competition slowly faded beneath the busy rhythm of everyday life. Then one afternoon, as I was lazily scrolling through my e-mails, a notification (通知) from the competition organizers suddenly appeared.

“Petey, we’re here!” Seeing the familiar house, Annie excitedly turned to the backseat. “Yeah, for that sticky rice stuff,” said her brother, his eyes fixed on his phone. Mom sighed. She had tried explaining all week that making nian gao was the perfect way for them, a Chinese American family, to welcome the Lunar New Year. But to 15-year-old Petey, it was just a boring, messy old tradition — not part of his modern life.
When they arrived, Grandpa was already waiting at the front door. Drawn by the nice smell, Annie rushed into the kitchen. Petey followed slowly. “Doing this again ”
Grandpa led Petey to the kitchen. “We leave the sticky rice in water overnight, and then steam it,” he explained. “Then we hit it while it’s hot until it becomes a smooth dough (面团). It’s how we welcome the new year — with sweetness.” He held out a long wooden pounding stick to Petey. “Want to try ” “I’m okay,” Petey said, stepping back with his hands in his pockets. He watched from the side as Annie hit the rice.
Finally, after Annie finished her job, Grandma brought the big, warm and soft dough to the table. Dad, who arrived late because of some work things, also joined everyone in the kitchen. “This is the last step,” Grandma said, shaping the dough skillfully with her rough but gentle hands. As she made a small cake, her eyes fell on an old photo of her own mother on the wall. “My mom said the warmth of nian gao is the warmth of a family,” she continued, holding the cake out to Petey. “Every generation makes its own choice about traditions. Some keep them with their hands, some with their hearts.” She smiled, her tired yet hopeful eyes meeting his. “Would you like to try now ”

8.阅读下列材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It all began at my local Portland airport as I was checking in for my flight for Salt Lake City. Panic hit: my suitcase was still at home. It held everything for a week-long conference in Utah: my tailored suit, a folder of printed presentations, even the novel I planned to finally read on the flight. With no time to turn back, I called my wife, who promised to send it on the next flight. An agent reassured me that it would reach my hotel by evening. Armed with that promise, I boarded, unaware of the incredible journey that awaited my suitcase.
That night at my hotel, no suitcase arrived. I called Delta Airlines and Peter, a baggage service agent, informed me that the connecting flight had been canceled. “Don’t worry. It’ll be on the first flight tomorrow and delivered to your hotel by 9 a.m.” he promised.
The next morning at 9 a.m., nothing. I called Delta again, my voice shaking over the phone. “Where’s my bag ” Peter responded calmly, “Can you make it through today ” “But I need the staff in my bag!” Peter explained that without a baggage ticket number, tracking was difficult, but he would keep trying. Frustrated, I washed my only shirt in the washbowl, hung it near the heater, and hoped it would dry up for the conference in the afternoon.
By noon, Peter called. His voice apologetic and sympathetic, he told me that there had been a mistake and now my suitcase was traveling to New York’s LaGuardia Airport. “All you can do is focus on today”, he advised, trying to ease my anger and anxiety, “Just take it as a light travel”. Just then, a well-dressed stranger approached me. To my astonishment, he reached into his own carry-on and pulled out a neatly folded new shirt and a pair of socks. “Traveling Light ” he smiled, his eyes twinkling with understanding. As he offered them to me, I mumbled thanks, overwhelmed with a blend of embarrassment and gratitude.

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I am Tia. The corner of 71st Street and Prospect was my corner. To me, it was like a wide-open treasure box. When my sisters and brothers were chasing each other, and I felt like the walls of our apartment were about to burst, I ran down to my corner. My sneakers pounded the pavement, then they took me on a flying leap into a sea of green. I waded through the tall grass, my jeans swished with every step. Butterflies and crickets (蟋蟀) scared up at my feet. I sat down, closed my eyes and listened to their songs. The grass smelt clean and fresh. The sun warmed my skin, and I wondered why I was the only one who’s thankful for this place.
Some folks didn’t respect it. They passed by all day long and never took the time to peek inside. They even threw trash from their car windows. There was junk here- old chairs, a broken bicycle wheel. I worried that soon there would be more garbage than birds.
One day, the city announced a plan to pave it over for a parking lot. Heartbroken, I ran to my room and slammed the door. “It just needs some cleaning up, that’s all. How come they can’t see that ” Out my window I could see my corner. Mama knocked softly at the door and stepped in. “Tia, you see something in that corner that most folks don’t. You got to make them see what you see. Make some noise about it.”
Early the next morning, I dragged a chair down to the corner. On a card-board I painted NO PARKING LOT! SAVE OUR NATURE! in large letters. I sat down and waited. Most people in the community didn’t pay any attention to me. My effort seemed in vain, attracting more ridicule (嘲笑) than support. I swallowed hard and felt my sign drop to the ground.

Dylan is an educator at a high school in his town. One day, Dylan’s son, Tim, was getting ready for his first formal event that required a tie. From the bathroom, the 8-year-old called for Dylan and asked for help with his tie. Dylan went into the bathroom, standing behind his son. He had his hand on Tim’s shoulder, lovingly putting his tie on. With all done, Tim was looking into the mirror with satisfaction. That’s when Dylan found himself back in high school twenty-three years ago, remembering what happened to him at that time.
During Dylan’s teenage years, he had been living with his grandparents. That year, when Dylan was 11 years old, he was getting ready for a formal school event that required a tie. However, he realized he had no idea how to knot (把……打成结) it. And his grandparents couldn’t do it either.
With no other choice, he had to do it on his own. He sat in front of the mirror and fruitlessly tried and failed, over and over again, to twist (旋转) the tie into different knots that might make it look like it was supposed to. As he realized that he wasn’t going to be able to figure it out no matter what he did, there were some tears of frustration that started to bubble up in his eyes. To make matters worse, he thought it represented so much of the failure and hurt he was feeling in his life at that time.
Dylan lost heart, feeling upset, and he shoved (随手扔) the tie in his suit coat pocket and headed to the event without wearing a tie. As he was waiting in line to get in, his head was down and he was in low spirit.

My father was sixty. Though he had planned on retiring at fifty-five, he was still working hard. For him, raising four children — especially now that my mother had stopped working and was at home full time — meant he couldn’t afford to retire. It also meant he couldn’t make good on something he had promised my mother. “Sweetheart,” he’d say, “I’m going to take you on a cruise (乘船游览).” He still told her that, and only these days he added, “as soon as the kids are out of college.”
I knew that putting all of us kids through college probably meant it was going to be a while before my father achieved his dream of going away with my mother on a cruise — though it didn’t stop him from cutting out ads about cruise vacations! It was cute, but it was kind of sad, too. I remember my grandmother always wanted to go to Nova Scotia. My grandfather would always say, “We’ll go next year, sweetheart.” Then she died. My grandmother never got to see Nova Scotia. I just didn’t want my parents to wait until it was too late.
I decided to save up my money to send my parents on a cruise, even if it was a short three-day cruise. My friends said to me, “Get real! Saving up for a cruise is something you’ll never be able to do.” But I didn’t believe that. It was not like I could send them around the world or anything, but I didn’t think my putting together the money for a short trip was an impossible goal. I was determined that just as my parents had made my dreams come true for all these years from my first bicycle to my first soccer camp — I was going to do all I could to make their dream of going on a cruise come true.

“Class, we have an exciting project to talk about,” Mrs. Garcia said, “Our school is going to raise money for the big spring trip. And the third and fourth grades are going to put on a talent show!”
All the kids made sounds as if they thought a talent show was exciting news, except me. After school, I thought about the talent show and about me being the only one without any talents. I went to my mom and asked for her advice.
“Let’s see. You’re good at math, obviously. You’re really good at having new ideas. And you ask the most interesting questions,” she said. “Mom,” I reminded her. “None of these can be performed on a stage.” In the following days, I tried everything for the show but failed.
When the final rehearsal (排练) began, I walked into the hall and tried to hide, but Mrs. Garcia saw me. She whispered in Mrs. Rice’s ear, who nodded in agreement, and then called me over. “Clementine, you can keep us company during the rehearsal,” she said. So I had to sit between Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Garcia, right there at the side of the stage where all the kids could see me and know that I had no talent.
The first act was called Cartwheelers. Twelve kids lined up, six on each side of the stage. When I noticed there were no safety mats (垫子), I ran into the gym, pulled out a mat, and placed it on the floor in front of the stage. Then I got some kids to help me. Pretty soon, we had all the mats piled up (堆起). Mrs. Rice gave me a thumbs-up. I didn’t even get a chance to sit down again for the rest of the afternoon because everybody needed my help for something. Finally, after everyone practiced their acts, I went over to Mrs. Rice, who showed me her watch and then called out, “Take your places, everyone. Five minutes to ShowTime!”注意:

《专题 07 读后续写(期末题型精练)-2025-2026学年高二英语下学期(人教版)》参考答案
1.Paragraph 1:
I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It was a picture of the pumpkin we had carved together. Underneath, Brian had written, “My first real win with my brother. Even if we didn’t get first, it was a victory because we worked as a team.” Seeing those words, a wave of guilt washed over me. I remembered how I had selfishly taken all the money and lied to him. I realized how much I had let him down. I turned to Brian, ready to confess everything.
Paragraph 2:
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything ” I was shocked. Brian just smiled gently and said, “I always knew. But I also knew that you needed that game more than the money at that time. And I was proud of our teamwork, not the prize. I hoped one day you’d understand the real meaning of winning together.” His words made me feel even more ashamed. I apologized sincerely, vowing to make it up to him. From then on, I truly understood my role as his guardian angel and the importance of true brotherhood.

Carly sighed, put a handful of fortune cookies into a small tray and left the kitchen. Her hands were slightly shaking as she walked toward the twins’ table, her heart beating fast. She kept telling herself to smile, remembering the fortune in her cookie. When she reached the table, she hesitated for a second, then forced a soft smile and placed the tray down. “Here are your fortune cookies,” she said quietly, avoiding eye contact, ready to turn away quickly.
“Hey! You’re the new girl — Carly, right !” one of the girls exclaimed. Carly froze, then slowly looked up, surprised that they recognized her. The other twin smiled warmly and pulled out a chair beside her. “We saw you in class but didn’t dare to say hi,” she said. “Your family’s restaurant is amazing!” Carly felt her tension fade away, and she even smiled more naturally. They talked about school and the restaurant, and before long, Carly realized that making friends wasn’t as hard as she thought. The fortune was right — a single smile really could bring new friends.

However, my parents showed no interest in my garden. My father even complained, finding it troublesome to navigate around my expanding garden to reach the driveway. To make matters worse, I once replaced her decorative items with a vase of my roses — at least in my mother’s eyes. She glanced at it and simply called them “something else to clean up.” Despite their lack of interest, I continued. Each morning, I watched new buds open. That small piece of land, which began as an act of rebellion, slowly became my own private sanctuary. The very golden leaves my mother saw as rubbish, I now saw as nature’s blanket protecting my blooms.
Today, I am known as “Mrs. Greenthumbs,” and my parents couldn’t be prouder. My father, who once thought it a waste of time, now proudly points out my garden to the neighbors. My mother, who used to see only a mess in the fallen leaves, now asks me for advice on keeping cut roses fresh. Looking back, I see that my first garden, started just to oppose my parents, has ironically grown into a bridge between us. Now I understand that what makes me a real gardener is my love for nature — and, through learning to care for it, a deeper love for my family as well.

To their surprise, “Anti-Cancer Kitchen” became a popular spot. More and more families of cancer patients traveled to this special restaurant, hoping to cook homemade meals with their own hands for their loved ones. These fresh, familiar dishes were deeply loved by the patients, who tasted not only food but also the genuine warmth of home and family care in every bite. Such comfort and warmth greatly inspired them, offering extra courage and strength to stay positive and battle against their severe illnesses. Many patients and their families were so moved that they left sincere, heartfelt notes to express their deep gratitude to the kind couple.
While their profits fell, the couple found something more rewarding. Though they earned less from the restaurant’s regular business, they received countless warm smiles from the families and the patients. Once, a recovered patient even came back to volunteer in the kitchen. Shirley and Leo realized that their small act of kindness had brought immense comfort to those in need, which was far more precious than any financial gain.

6.Possible version:
I read the e-mail 20 times before finally believing I succeeded. A wave of exhilaration washed over me. Without a second thought, I rushed downstairs to share the incredible news with my family. My mother wrapped me in a tight embrace, her eyes glistening with tears, while my father instantly suggested celebrating at my favorite restaurant. I also called Ms. Susan to share the good news, who encouraged me, “Your work finally paid off.” Bethany, however, offered only a brief, flat “Congratulations”. Her lack of enthusiasm cast a shadow over my joy. I had been secretly longing for her approval more than anyone else’s. Holding the draft, I approached Bethany. “It’s about us,” my voice barely a whisper. “Would you like to read it ”
I held my breath as Bethany read my story, worried about her response. The silence grew thick and every second stretched out. My heart pounded as I watched, searching for any hint in her eyes. Then came her voice, “This is... truly wonderful. The part of the annoying sister is vivid. You really deserve the success.” Her words filled me with a warmth that seemed to melt away years of quiet rivalry between us. My entire body relaxed. “It wasn’t just my achievement.” I told her. “You helped me get there.” Tears streamed down Bethany’s face as she hugged me tightly. At that moment, I realized home was more than a place; it was the safety of shared memories and the comfort of being fully accepted, exactly as you are.

Petey took the cake and had a bite. The soft, glutinous texture melted in his mouth, sweet but not cloying, carrying the faint fragrance of steamed rice. It was nothing like the boring food he had imagined — there was a warm, familiar taste, like the hugs Grandpa gave him when he was little. Grandma watched him quietly, a smile playing on her lips. Petey put down the cake, reached out his hand, and picked up the wooden pounding stick. “Can I try again ” he said softly, his voice no longer full of indifference.
When Petey finished shaping the cakes, he handed the first one to Grandma. His fingers were still sticky with dough, but his eyes shone brightly. “Grandma, this is for you,” he said, a little shy but sincere. “It’s perfect, my boy,” she whispered, her eyes filled with tears of joy. Petey looked around the kitchen — Annie was laughing, Dad was taking photos, and Grandpa was patting his shoulder proudly. He suddenly understood: nian gao wasn’t just a tradition; it was the warmth of family, passed down from generation to generation.

Paragraph 1
Peter’s advice, paired with the stranger’s kindness, kept me going through that week. I attended the conference in the shirt from the kind stranger, introducing myself not with my title, but with my story of the lost suitcase. To my surprise, the shared laughter over my predicament broke the ice faster than any business card. Without my prepared notes, I listened more intently; without the tailored suit, I spoke more freely. The “essentials” I had packed now seemed like layers of armor I no longer needed. Peter’s words had evolved from a mere consolation into a philosophy: by letting go of what was missing, I had unexpectedly made room for genuine connection in the present. (102)
Paragraph 2
A week later, at Salt Lake City Airport, I spotted my dusty bag on the conveyor belt. After countless phone calls with Peter to check on it, I finally watched it go around, like a long lost friend. As I hugged it, I realized that the true journey wasn’t the bag’s detour to New York, but my own path to realizing that everything I truly needed—resilience, adaptability, and the kindness of strangers—had never been packed in it at all. “Could I call you again ” I asked Peter. “As long as you fly Delta,” he laughed happily, “if you travel light.” Back home, I unpacked. Everything was there, even the novel I’d anyway failed to finish. But the next trip, I chose to pack less—just one shirt and socks. Freedom, I learned, is about letting go. (118)

Mind telling me what this place means to you ” she asked kindly. Her warm tone encouraged me to pour out my heart. I told her about the butterflies, the crickets’ songs, the clean smell of grass, and my fear of losing this secret garden to cold concrete. Sara listened intently, taking notes and occasionally snapping photos of the corner and my determined, though slightly tearful, face. She said “I think your story could inspire others. Great job speaking up for what you love.”
Paragraph 2: The news reported by Sara spread throughout the community. The next day, my story and a picture of me holding the sign appeared in the local newspaper. To my surprise, many neighbors read it and started seeing the corner with new eyes. They noticed the wildflowers they had never stopped to admire and the birdsong that was often drowned out by traffic. Over the following weekend, a small group of volunteers showed up with gloves and trash bags. Together, we cleaned up the old chairs and the broken bicycle wheel. Standing there, watching people work together, I realized that Mama was right.

It was at that time that the principal Mr Smith noticed Dylan in the crowd. He walked straight to Dylan, who was the only one that didn’t wear a tie as required. He gently pulled the teenager aside, asking him if he had his tie. Not able to contain himself, Dylan started crying at that point. Dylan pulled the tie out, explaining that he was not capable of putting the tie on by himself. Hearing that, all Mr Smith told him was “Everything is going to be alright”. With a loving and gentle smile, Mr Smith lovingly and patiently guided Dylan how to knot his tie. Finally, Dylan went back to the line with a standard tie and regained confidence.
The incident had a deep effect on Dylan later in his life. The experience later guided his path as an educator after Dylan graduated from university. He understood deeply how a single, small act of attention could influence a child who is in trouble. In his role as a teacher, he often thinks back to Mr Smith’s act of compassion and considers how he can pass on it and create those kinds of experiences for his own students. He often watches for the students with a missing tie, a downcast gaze, or a hidden struggle, ready to step in with the same gentle support that once saved him. He hopes his presence could turn a moment of struggle into one filled with warmth.

I started doing part-time jobs and yard work around the neighborhood. It was my turn to do something for them to repay their love. I had a tight schedule every day: I would deliver milk at dawn, and worked as a waiter in a restaurant at night. It wasn’t always easy. There were times when I felt as if I was torn up because I had to strike the balance between work and study. However, at the thought of my parents’ long-awaited cruise trip, I persevered in the jobs no matter how tired I was. I knew that one more coin I earned meant one step closer to making their dream a reality.
One year later, I finally saved up enough money! I was overwhelmed by an incredible feeling of accomplishment and excitement when I checked my savings account balance. I couldn’t wait to book two cruise tickets for them. When they opened the envelope containing the tickets, their eyes widened with surprise and disbelief. With their eyes blurred with tears, they gave me a tight hug, thanking me over and over again. Then they spent three unforgettable days on the cruise trip, enjoying each other’s company. At that moment, I knew that all my hard work and sacrifices were worth it.

Just then, Mrs. Garcia got a phone call — her daughter was having a baby. After a quick word with Mrs. Rice, she rushed off at lightning speed. Then Mrs. Rice turned to me and said, “Now you have to be my assistant.” And that’s when I realized I didn’t have a worried feeling anymore. Instead, I had a proud feeling, like the sun was rising inside my chest. The feeling stayed with me all through the rest of the show. And no matter what went wrong, Mrs. Rice and I just fixed it. When the last act was over, the audience kept smiling and clapping.
At the end, when Mrs. Rice went onstage to thank everyone, I thought my job was done — until she said my name. “And a special thanks to our backstage manager, Clementine, whose quick thinking and tireless help made this show run smoothly!” she announced. A wave of applause washed over me. In that moment, I understood what my mom meant. My talent wasn’t for performing on the stage; it was for seeing what needed to be done and making it happen. The rising sun inside my chest burst into a full, warm glow. I finally had my place in the spotlight, just not the one I had originally imagined.
