Energy drinks are categorized as beverages for special purposes. They typically contain a mix of caffeine, vitamins, and other so-called “functional ingredients” such as taurine, ginseng, and guarana. 42 Consuming energy drinks during late-night study sessions or long work hours might give a temporary lift, but that’s only part of the story.

Obviously, it is risky to overconsume energy drinks. With their sweet, refreshing taste, many people treat them like regular soft drinks, without realizing the amount of caffeine and sugar they’re taking in. A scientific consensus recommends that healthy adults limit caffeine intake to no more than 400 mg per day, but a single can or bottle of energy drink may contain 50 mg to over 500 mg of caffeine. So it’s easy to exceed safe levels without realizing it, leading to insomnia, nervousness, and even dependence. Moreover, energy drinks can negatively impact the blood vessels. 44

But what actually is the PHD
58 It recommends at least five portions of fruit and veg a day, a portion of legumes, a portion of nuts, and plenty of whole grains. Animal products aren’t necessarily off the menu altogether, but it’s suggested that chicken, fish, and red meat play a much smaller role in your diet. It also suggests consuming seasonally available foods, with flexibility for different cultures centred around local dishes and produce.
Why should we follow it
The environmental benefits of the PHD could be huge, purely from its reduction of animal-produce. It offers flexibility without requiring the full commitment of going meat-free. 59 It could prevent 11 million premature adult deaths every year, and is linked with reducing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even cancer.
How can we follow it
60 The PHD isn’t about a huge diet transformation, but consistent small steps that make a massive impact. A simple way to begin is to adjust your plate division, eat a “rainbow” of fruit and veg, and gradually reduce daily meat consumption. Even following a few of its core ideas can bring great benefits for your health and the environment.

When people try to focus on a faint sound, many instinctively (本能地) shut their eyes. The common belief is that removing visual distractions allows the brain to concentrate more fully on hearing, boosting sensitivity. 66
A study published in JASA set out to test whether closing the eyes truly improves hearing under noisy conditions. 67 They wanted to find out how visual input affects the ability to detect sounds.
In the experiment, participants listened to sounds through headphones while background noise played. Their task was to adjust the volume until each sound was just barely audible over the noise. 68 First, they closed their eyes; then they opened their eyes to look at a blank screen, a still image related to the sound, and finally a matching video.
The results went against a widely held assumption. 69 On the contrary, seeing a dynamic video corresponding to the sound significantly improved hearing sensitivity. Closing the eyes made it harder to pick out faint sounds in noisy settings, while relevant visual input provided a clear advantage.
To understand why this happens, researchers used EEG to track brain activity. They found that closing the eyes shifts the brain into a state that increases how strongly it filters incoming information. 70 It can also suppress the target sounds participants are trying to hear.

73 Experts believe that reducing working hours can benefit everyone if shorter hours help employers too. Studies prove that after a certain hour limit, each extra hour leads to lower output, and too long hours contribute nothing to total production.
You might consider things from the perspective of cost. Extending hours of current workers is reasonable as long as they create value. Employees carry fixed costs like benefits, so spreading these costs over longer hours is often more economical than hiring new employees with extra expenses.
You might see long hours as a sign of a proper work ethic. 74 Many company founders keep high work intensity as their companies grow. Some business leaders even believe very long workweeks support national prosperity.
There are other ways to approach this question. You might argue that the best workweek is defined by output, not hours. You might say that this is one for policymakers, or whisper something about AI. 75 You're also sending a signal about your own priorities.

To build a new positive habit, start small. 77 For instance, if you want to read more, don’t aim for an hour a day initially; commit to just ten minutes. Consistency is far more important than intensity in the beginning.
78 Trying to break a bad habit Identify the cue that triggers it and the reward it provides. Then, experiment with replacing the routine with a healthier behavior that delivers a similar reward. For example, if stress (cue) leads you to eat junk food (routine) for comfort (reward), try a short walk or meditation instead.
