When the shrill (尖锐的) ring of the phone echoed (回响) through the living room, Jane was still sleeping. She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock! Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night for several days, and she couldn't expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!” It was the voice of her father, a seaman who seldom returned home due to his duties, earning money to support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
“Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend ” Jane asked, pretending to be slightly annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late morning. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.” Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment. How could she have forgotten such an important day!
While chatting with her father, Jane’s eyes wandered around the room, and she saw a lot of dirty clothes scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn't been cleaned for a few days, since her mother had been too busy with work to deal with such housework. Looking at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother. “Well, Dad, now I'm going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.
Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him.

Cooper was six years old when we found him. He jumped at sudden noises and slept in tight circles like he was trying to disappear into himself. But when he finally wagged his tail at us for the first time, warming up after days of cautious distance, it felt like a genuine miracle.
Then we met our neighbor, Vanessa. The first time she met Cooper, he barked once. Just once. “Could you please keep that thing quiet ” she snapped. “Some of us work at home, you know.” I apologized quickly, pulling Cooper back toward our yard. But she just frowned and said “I don’t like big dogs. They’re unpredictable and dangerous.”
When the mailman complimented (赞美) Cooper one morning, telling me what a beautiful boy he was, Vanessa actually yelled across the street from her driveway. “Don’t touch him! You’ll smell like wet carpet for days!”
I tried to be kind despite everything. I baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies and brought them to Vanessa. But Vanessa didn’t like that. She declined taking the cookies with a polite but cold tone, “That won’t be necessary, but thank you.”
One Friday, I was walking Cooper after my shift, when I spotted Vanessa across the street. Her face was buried in her phone. Then I suddenly heard brakes screaming. A delivery truck was backing out of a home’s driveway at a very dangerous speed.
Cooper broke free of his leash (链) and ran across the street like lightning, faster than I’d ever seen him move. In one powerful motion, he knocked Vanessa off the sidewalk and onto the grass. The truck missed her by inches. I saw how close it was.

I’ve been very fond of classical music since I was a kid. The soft piano melody or grand symphony always calms me after a stressful school week. My best friend Tom is totally different, he’s a big rock music fan, with loud electric guitars and heavy drums following him everywhere.
We’d never argued about music tastes before, but last Friday evening, things got heated. We sat on the neighborhood park lawn, passing headphones back and forth. After Tom listened to my favorite Chopin nocturne (肖邦夜曲), he shrugged: “It’s okay, but way too slow, where’s the energy ” I frowned, grabbing the headphones back. “Energy Your rock music is just noise! Singers shout like they’re in pain, and instruments hurt my ears,” I said sharply. Tom’s eyes widened, leaning forward with a raised voice: “You don’t get it! Rock is passion, saying how you feel freely! You’re stuck in an old-fashioned circle, scared to try new things!”
Angry, my cheeks burned. “Old-fashioned Classical music has real artistry, not just screaming and hitting”! I stood up, kicking a stone hard. Tom jumped up too, fists clenched: “How dare you respect what I love You’re my best friend, I thought you’d understand”! Before I could reply, he turned and stormed off (愤然离开), backpack swinging. I yelled after him: “Fine! Don’t talk to me if you’re unreasonable”! But as he disappeared around the corner, a twinge of regret flashed. I quickly pushed it away, still angry.
For three days, we didn’t speak. We passed in the school hallway without a glance, and group chats went silent. I missed our jokes and after-school walks, but was unwilling to apologize. Deep down, I knew I’d gone too far.

The Imperfect Bowl
Ben stared at the clay (黏土) on the spinning wheel. His art teacher, Ms. Lena, had shown the class how to make a perfect bowl. “Find the center, be gentle with your hands,” she had advised. But Ben’s hands felt awkward, and the wheel seemed to have a mind of its own. For three class periods, he had tried and failed. His earlier creations sat on the shelf — a row of uneven, crooked (歪斜) shapes that were now hard and dry. They were a constant reminder of his struggle, and frustration grew within him. All he wanted was to create something beautiful and perfect, just like the model Ms. Lena had placed at the front of the room.
This was his last opportunity during this project. Taking a deep breath, he wet his hands and tried once more. He pressed down firmly, his entire attention being focused on the cool, wet clay. To his surprise, it felt different this time. The clay seemed to respond to his touch, rising steadily and smoothly. A wave of excitement passed through him as a tall, well-shaped bowl began to take form. He was finally close to success!
However, in a moment of distraction, his thumb slipped and pressed too hard into the soft wall of the bowl, creating a deep, obvious dent (凹痕). Ben’s heart immediately felt heavy. Disappointment, sharp and bitter, washed over him. It was ruined, again. He had a strong urge to destroy the clay and start over, but the class bell was about to ring. Time had run out.
He stared at the damaged bowl, feeling utterly defeated. Ms. Lena appeared beside him, whispering, “Let the clay tell you where it wants to go — Flaws (瑕疵) aren’t always mistakes; they can simply be the first lines of a story.” Her words steadied his fingers. He picked up a carving tool and began to work on a new design.

We had a tough week in Maine. I had missed three days of work so my income was going to be lower than normal. Unexpectedly, the price of oil surged (飞涨) as the temperature dropped sharply. The highest temperature that week was expected to be only eight degrees. I was stressed, to say the least. So I shopped with a clear strategy, looking for every possible way to cut pennies to help me save money to buy items and keep the house warm.
However, my eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He just wanted a special kind of yogurt (酸奶), but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it. It was the kind of yogurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box. And it was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate all the marketing that promotes such products.
I felt I was not a good mother when his big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yogurt. What’s the big deal ” So I found a way. I put some other items back on the shelf and finally managed to get his yogurt.
On the way back from the supermarket, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people avoid him in the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. I looked at him closely then — bare hands holding a piece of cardboard, a runny nose frozen to his face, and a worn jacket.
I reached into my wallet where I had some money already folded and ready for rent, oil, and snow removal. I was struggling because I had to buy oil to heat my home.

I'd loved hip-hop dancing since my childhood, and in high school I took classes that focused on jazz and hip-hop. Dance was my favorite class, and I looked forward to going every day. This year is my senior year and I couldn't wait to see what the dance class would bring me.
On the first day of class, a fellow dancer told me our new teacher was Ms. Barton, who only taught ballet. I had never taken ballet before. I admitted I was a bit nervous, but also up for the challenge.
As I entered the classroom, all the girls were ready. We all stood at the barre (扶手杆) as Ms. Barton ran us through basic ballet steps — plié, tendu, dégagé and rond de jambe to name a few. She was just how I had imagined a ballet teacher would be: excellent posture with a strict attitude.
Along with my fellow classmates, I began my grand plié, with one hand on the barre and the other motioning out to the side, slowly bending down with my knees held at a level.
I wanted to give myself a pat on the back. But Ms. Barton gave me a stare and asked everyone else to watch me do a grand plié.
“Wow, she must think I’m great to demonstrate.” Hiding my excitement, I performed again. Complete silence. All eyes were on me.
“Now, class, this is an example of what not to do,” Ms. Barton said.
Red face. Eyes watering. A wave of pure embarrassment came over me. What had just happened What should I do
I tried to finish the rest of the class to the best of my ability. Before the class ended, Ms. Barton briefly mentioned two important things: there would be a final dance presentation at the end of the term to show our learning achievements and she would also select one student for the “Ballerina Award”. I spent the rest of the day reflecting on the moment, feeling upset and even wanting to quit. But my pride wouldn’t allow it, and Ms. Barton's announcement gave me a ray of hope.

I drove from Sacramento to send my nine-year-old son, Matt, to attend a survival camp. He had been longing for it for long. He did a lot of research online and asked me to buy several pieces of equipment for the survival training, including a whistle.
I confirmed the location with the camp director through phone call and then we set out. Everything went on so smoothly until the map app on my phone advised me to take the next exit out. The route led us off the highway and down a nameless rocky dirt road. I trusted the map app and kept driving. But panic slowly arose after 30 minutes when there was not a sign of the camp. I found myself driving in thick forest, and each tree looked the same.
The road worsened. My car — built for city roads, not mountain paths — struggled on the uneven ground. It bottomed out several times and finally broke down. I tried to restart the engine, but in vain. Not until then did I call the camp director for help, telling him we got lost in the forest. But my phone died in the middle of our conversation.
As the sun was about to set, panic seized me. I decided to walk around for help. However, Matt stopped me. “We’d better stay where we are, mom. We don’t know what is out there in the forest.” I couldn’t hold back my tears any more, telling him how sorry I was for making such a stupid mistake. “Don’t worry, mom. Judging from the car tracks on the ground, this area sees occasional traffic,” said Matt, giving me the warmest smile in the world.
Instead of just waiting, Matt told me to press the hazard button (应急按钮) to keep the car lights flashing. Meanwhile, he used his whistle to signal for help from time to time, the sharp sound of which became our voice to the world beyond the trees.

I held my purse tightly as I rushed into my neighborhood Starbucks. The rich smell of freshly made coffee filled the air, but I paid no attention my eyes were fixed on the shelf where the limited edition bear cups should have been. But it was empty! My heart sank, but I walked straight to the register.
“Do you have any more of those bear cups in the warehouse ” I asked, leaning forward. That cup was for my sick niece, who’d been begging for it for weeks.
The server, a young woman with a name tag reading “Lila”, gave a polite but apologetic smile. “I’m so sorry, ma’am. They’re selling very fast — we sell out within hours of getting a new shipment. We’ll have a new delivery on Friday, though. I can put your name and number down to set one aside for you.”
My patience broke. I hit my hand on the counter and said, “No! That’s impossible!” My voice was loud, drawing looks from every corner of the store. “From downtown to the suburbs, this is the ninth Starbucks I’ve been to today! Nine. And everyone says ‘sold out’! But I see them online for hundreds of dollars! You’re holding them back to resell, aren’t you !”
Lila’s smile faded, but her voice stayed steady. “Ma’am, I work fifty hours a week here. The last thing I want is to bring a Starbucks cup home. We don’t keep any back — first-come, first-served. Even regular customers struggle to get one. Can I get you a drink or something to eat Our lemon loaf just came out warm.”
Anger made my cheeks burn. “Forget it!” I hit both hands on the counter harder, then turned around and rushed out. The doorbell rang sharply behind me. As I walked away, guilt washed over me — I’d totally overreacted, but I was so desperate to see my niece smile.

Max had always been good at fading into the background. In class discussions, he perfected the art of the thoughtful nod. In group projects, he was a reliable researcher, rather than a presenter. His carefully constructed comfort zone, however, was about to break apart when his English teacher, Ms. Green, announced that each student would give a five-minute presentation on a local historical figure to the entire class. For Max, it wasn’t an assignment but a nightmare.
The thought of standing alone on stage, with dozens of curious eyes fixed on him, sent cold waves of panic through his chest, leaving him on pins and needles for days. After school, he mustered up the courage to approach Ms. Green’s desk, hesitantly stammering, “I... I don’t think I can do it.” He had expected some vague words of encouragement, but instead, she leaned forward, listened carefully to his fears, and offered an unusual approach: “Tonight, record your voice, and feel free to say whatever you want — no rules, no pressure.”
That night, Max followed her advice, sitting alone in his room with his phone. The first recording was painful—rushed, shaky, and filled with awkward pauses. But he tried again, and by the third take, something shifted. He heard a clear sentence, then another, sounding steady and natural on his phone. It was only a small victory, yet for the first time, the task ahead felt manageable, like a mountain he might actually climb.
The following afternoon, Ms. Green arranged a new challenge. “Now,” she said gently, “I want you to play that recording in an empty classroom. Stand at the front and mouth the words along to it.” Standing behind the teacher’s desk, phone clutched tightly in his hand, rows of empty chairs staring back at him, he pressed the play button. His recorded voice filled the quiet space, slow and sure. Halfway through, his lips faltered, falling out of rhythm with the audio. He stopped the recording, the silence suddenly loud.

Blip and Dit-dit were high school students. They had been best friends since childhood, walking to school together every day and helping each other with their studies. Blip was good at math and often tutored Dit-dit with difficult problems. Dit-dit excelled in writing and always helped Blip improve his essays. Their friendship was deep and peaceful until one day, an unexpected argument broke the harmony.
After school one afternoon, they were walking home together. Grinning from ear to ear, they skipped merrily under the warm sun. Suddenly, Blip brought up his favorite topic — extraterrestrial (外星的) life. He firmly believed that there must be human-like beings on other planets in the universe, and that humans might even live on Mars in the near future. Dit-dit, however, disagreed. “It’s just impossible without any solid evidence,” she said, a hint of frustration in her voice. “You’re always dreaming about Mars and aliens. Doesn’t our life on Earth matter to you at all ” Their voices grew louder as each held their own opinion.
Blip felt deeply upset. It wasn’t just that Dit-dit didn’t believe what he believed in; it was that she seemed to look down on his dreams. Dit-dit was also angry. She felt Blip was always lost in unrealistic fantasies, ignoring the real life around them. During the argument, harsh words were spoken. Dit-dit turned and walked away quickly, leaving Blip standing alone, watching her figure disappear in the distance.
That evening, Blip sat alone in his room, gazing at the bright moon outside his window. His heart felt empty. He remembered how Dit-dit had stayed up late to help him prepare for the essay contest, and how she had brought him class notes every day when he was sick. These warm memories slowly softened his anger, replacing it with regret.
Meanwhile, Dit-dit was also reflecting at home. She realized that her strong reaction came from a hidden fear — the fear that Blip’s space dreams might one day literally take him to Mars, and away from her. She cherished their friendship but had expressed her care in the wrong way.

11.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad is a phone repairman. He is familiar with the screen with spiderweb cracks — the fight between parents and kids is always an open secret. Over time, he’s become really sensitive about the problem of teenagers glued to their phones. Unluckily, I have become one of them. I always spend hours scrolling through social media, playing games, and ignore family matters.
One rainy evening, I had promised to attend my cousin’s birthday dinner, but I lost track of time while playing an online game and finally told my parents that I had something important to do. When my parents came home to find me still on the couch, my phone in hand, my dad’s voice trembled with anger. “Is the so-called important thing just this Can’t you prioritize anything over that screen ” I shouted, “It’s nothing but a dinner!” I stormed out of the house with a loud slam of the door. Without looking back, I was ready to teach my parents a lesson by staying far away overnight.
After what seemed like an age, I wandered aimlessly around the wet streets away from home. I was surrounded by the dark night. Suddenly my foot slipped, my phone crashing heavily from my hand onto the hard ground. The screen was full of spider cracks and the phone died instantly. Panic surged through me — without my phone, I had no way to contact others. I had to stay at a bus stop, cold and scared, as the rain poured down.
Deep into the night, there were few vehicles on the road, let alone pedestrians. My eyes grew misty. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, warm yellow headlights cut through the dark ahead. A car rolled slowly and smoothly toward me. The second it came close, my heart jumped.

Jenny had a talent for music. She joined the campus choir (合唱团) soon after entering high school and enjoyed the after-school activity greatly. Two months later, the choir teacher Miss Music announced there would be a year-end choir concert, the school year’s highlight.
To her surprise, Miss Music gave her a challenging solo (独唱). “I’ve never done that. I’m afraid I can’t...” Jenny hesitated. “You have a beautiful voice. Practice hard and you can make it,” she encouraged her. Jenny agreed, sparing no effort to practice under her guidance.
During her practice, Jenny often saw Eli, a senior who sang an inspiring song at the freshman opening ceremony that impressed all the attendees, including Jenny. He’d led the choir to city awards and now helped guide new members. He gave her breath control tips patiently, stabilizing her singing. Jenny was grateful for that.
The big day came. Jenny spotted Eli in the hall backstage, helping with the routines. Then she noticed a single microphone standing at the front of the stage, lit by a bright spotlight, ready for her solo. She had never sung into a microphone and she forgot to ask Miss Music for advice. “The microphone might not be much of a problem,” she thought.
It was her turn to sing. Miss Music motioned for her to go up in front of that microphone. Despite her uncertainty, her solo began smoothly. She felt relieved, singing confidently. Then she got to the last high note. With her lips nearly touching the microphone, the note came bursting out of the loud speakers (音箱), deafeningly loud. Every single person jerked (急拉) backward, jaws dropping.
Shame swept over Jenny. “Never will I sing in front of people again,” she thought, rushing out, determined to skip the choir’s upcoming performance. She walked down the hallway, tears of sadness welling up in her eyes.

As a high school freshman, Lena had always been confident in her studies — until she met math. In her first math class, Mr. Carter wrote a series of expressions on the blackboard. While most of her classmates nodded and took notes, Lena felt as if she were listening to a “foreign language”. The symbols “x” and “y” danced before her eyes, and she couldn’t follow the steps Mr. Carter explained.
The confusion only grew when she sat down to do her homework. For two hours she remained at her desk, staring at the textbook and the blank pages of her notebook. Every problem seemed unsolvable. She read the same question at least ten times, yet she still couldn’t work it out. Upset and ashamed, she never felt so stuck in a subject.
Weeks passed, and Lena’s anxiety about math got worse. She was afraid to raise her hand in class, worried that her questions would sound stupid. One day, Mr. Carter randomly called on her to answer a question. Lena stood up, her face burning with embarrassment for she was totally clueless about the answer. “Even a primary student knows that!” a boy named Jax sneered (嘲讽) loudly. Lena bit her lip and sank back into her seat with her head hanging low. Soon the first math exam took place. It came as no surprise that Lena got a bright red “D” on her paper. Tears welled in her eyes as she balled up the paper and stuffed it into her bag.
Seeing this, Mr. Carter asked Lena to stay after class. Instead of criticizing her, he said gently, “I notice you’ve been struggling, Lena. Math can be tough at first. Like learning to play a musical instrument, it requires the right method and consistent practice.” He told Lena that he had talked to Zoe, the top math student in the class, who agreed to help her. The next day, Mr. Carter rearranged the seats, and Zoe became Lena’s new deskmate.

Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly, and he needed every detail checked. Nothing could risk his winning. Winning wasn’t just important; it was everything the only time he felt truly seen among the indifference (冷漠) of his fellow students.
He had never lost a contest, but that didn’t calm him. Being on top counted, and he pushed himself to remain there. The other students, however, rarely approached him. Their glances were either distant or competitive, and Tom, too proud to reach out first, kept to himself.
Time was passing, and he finally got his rocket ready. Everything about it was perfect. A flood of confidence washed over him as he examined the other rockets, quickly finding problems that would affect their flight. But one rocket stood out: shining like polished silver, professionally crafted. His critical eye told him this one could beat his.
A thin boy lifted it gently. “Hi, your rocket’s awesome,” the boy said, a shy smile on his lips.
“Thanks,” Tom replied flatly, then regretfully added, “Yours too-really professional.”
“I’ve been working on it all summer,” the boy said, his eyes lighting up. “By the way, I’m Ed. Good luck.”
“Tom. You too,” Tom replied, shaken by the unexpected kindness. For the first time, he wondered if winning was everything.
The competition began. Rockets launched. Some crashed immediately; others climbed, but none came close to the heights Tom’s rockets had hit previously.
Tom watched, but felt no satisfaction. His stomach sank as he watched Ed prepare. Suddenly, his heart skipped a beat. He noticed a tiny gap between a fin (机翼) and the fuselage (机身) — a loose fin that would ruin the flight. But Ed, unaware, glanced at Tom and gave him a thumbs-up. Tom knew he had to decide.
“Next contestant: Ed Malovich!” the announcer called. Ed nodded, took a deep breath, and carefully carried his silver rocket to the launch pad. The crowd quieted, all eyes fixed on the craft.

A child psychologist had twin boys: one was an uncontrollable optimist, always finding a bright side in every tough spot, and the other a regular pessimist (悲观者) , who could spot a potential disaster in even the most perfect situations. Curious about how their completely opposite mindsets would shape their reactions to extreme situations, he decided to carry out a playful yet informative experiment on their 10th birthday, eager to observe their genuine responses to different surprises.
For the pessimistic son, he spared no effort to fill his bedroom from floor to ceiling with the coolest, latest video game consoles (主机), fashionable remote-control cars, and neatly arranged shelves lined with limited-edition action figures — literally everything a young kid could ever dream of owning. He even added soft brand-new stuffed animals in the cozy corners, carefully adjusting their positions, hoping to arouse a flicker of pure joy in his son’s usually gloomy eyes. For the optimistic son, however, he took a completely different approach: he merely laid a few pieces of white paper on his plain desk and put a towering, messy pile of newspaper right in the center of his room, with an old crayon under the newspaper.
As he finished all the deliberate preparations, the psychologist couldn’t help but wonder how each boy would react. Would the pessimist remove his doubts and finally let himself enjoy the mountain of gifts Would the optimist’s unshakable positivity hold strong against a room seemingly full of nothing but useless paper He leaned casually against the hallway wall, hands in his pockets, waiting excitedly for the twins to come home from school and discover their unique surprise birthday rooms.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

《专题 07 读后续写(期末题型精练)-2025-2026学年高二英语下学期(外研版)》参考答案
1. Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. Tom, initially groggy, soon perked up at the idea of surprising their mother. Together, they quickly tidied up the living room, putting away the scattered clothes and sweeping the floor. Jane also prepared a simple breakfast, while Tom decorated the room with colorful balloons and a handmade banner that read “Happy Birthday, Mum!” They worked together seamlessly, their excitement growing with each passing minute.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Their mother, taken aback by the sight of the clean room and the festive decorations, was moved to tears. She hugged them tightly, thanking them for their thoughtful surprise. Just then, the doorbell rang, and the cake arrived. As they all sat down to enjoy the breakfast and the cake, their mother said, “This is the best birthday ever! I’m so lucky to have such wonderful children.”

I ran over and asked Vanessa if she was okay. “I’m fine and he saved me,” she whispered, voice trembling with emotion. Her phone lay a few feet away, her eyes still wide with shock and lingering fear. I knelt down to check her. Fortunately, she had only suffered some scrapes and light bruises. She slowly sat up, her hand trembling slightly as she gently reached out to stroke Cooper. Cooper nuzzled her hand softly and let out a soft sigh. A breeze rustled the leaves above us, carrying the distant sound of the retreating truck.
The next day, there was a knock at my door. I opened the door and found out it was Vanessa. With a bag of treats in one hand and a new blue leash in the other, she looked shy and awkward. “For him,” she said, nodding at Cooper, who wagged his tail eagerly. “I’m sorry for being so rude and judgmental before,” she added quietly. I took the gifts, touched by her thoughtfulness. As I attached the new leash to Cooper’s collar, he sniffed it curiously. We smiled and Cooper’s soft bark filled the air, melting the last of the ice between us.

I realized my mistake. Staring at the silent chat history, my words echoed in my mind — “just noise,” “hurt my ears.” I had been disrespectful to what Tom loved deeply. My pride had blinded me. True friendship shouldn’t mean agreeing on everything, but respecting each other’s passions. Classical music’s complexity was my joy, just as rock’s raw energy was his. I decided to apologize, not just for the argument, but for dismissing his feelings. I needed him to know that our friendship was far more important than any difference in music taste.
With a nervous heart, I pressed the doorbell of Tom’s house. When he opened the door, his surprised expression made me more anxious. “Tom,” I began, my voice slightly trembling, “I’m really sorry. I was wrong to call your music ‘noise’. It was rude and I miss talking to you.” I handed him a USB stick. “I made you a playlist... it has some rock songs that I found online that I thought I might try to understand, and... one of my favorite concertos.” Tom looked at the USB, then at me, a small smile breaking through his frown. “I overreacted too,” he admitted, taking the stick. “Maybe you can help me find the ‘artistry’ in this rock music sometime.” We both laughed, the tension melting away. The argument hadn’t ended our friendship; it had taught us how to make it stronger.

As Ben finished his work, a mix of uncertainty and pride filled his heart. He carefully placed it on the display shelf, where it stood out among the smoother bowls. When Ms. Lena passed by, she paused and picked it up. Ben waited nervously for her comments. She ran her finger over the carved pattern and gave a warm, knowing smile. “Sometimes, the best art comes from a happy accident,” she said quietly. Her words lifted a weight off his shoulders, and his pride began to outweigh his doubt.
Ms. Lena then invited the class to gather around the display shelf. She held up Ben’s glazed bowl, which now shone under the lights. “Look at this one,” she said. “The artist met a problem but didn’t quit. He worked with it and created something with its own story. That is real creativity.” A few students nodded, and Ben noticed one of them pointing gently at the delicate pattern around the dent. In that moment, he felt seen not for a perfect outcome, but for a thoughtful journey. Ben finally understood that true growth isn’t about being perfect, but about how you beautifully repair your own cracks.

Five dollars might buy him a hot meal tonight.” He fell silent, noticing the homeless man’s red, shaking fingers and thin jacket. His confusion was replaced by a sense of sympathy.
Seeing what I had done, my son gave the man his yogurt and winter hat. “This hat will keep your ears warm,” he said. The man froze for a moment, and then accepted the gifts with both hands, tears welling up in his eyes. That night, I thought it over and eventually decided to keep going. I made up my mind to practice ballet hard. From the next day on, every morning I arrived at the dance studio an hour earlier than others to repeat basic steps. I stared at the mirror to correct my posture, and even asked classmates with ballet experience to help me adjust my movements. No matter how tired I felt after school, I never skipped a day of practice. Something inside me wanted to prove that I could do it.
Months later, the dance presentation day arrived. When it was my turn, I moved smoothly and confidently, every step precise and graceful. The audience burst into thunderous applause as I finished, and Ms. Barton looked at me with a rare smile. Though I was not the best ballet dancer out there, I spared no effort to prepare for it and gave it my all. At the award ceremony, I was declared winner of the Ballerina Award by Ms. Barton. I received the prize, a bit teary-eyed, and said sincerely, “Thank you for challenging me.”

The truck slowed down and stopped beside us — inside was the camp director, who’d come to search for us after our call cut off. He looked relieved to see us safe. “Your flashing lights and the whistle helped me find you quickly,” he said, patting Matt on the shoulder. We got into the truck, and I held Matt’s hand tightly, grateful for his calmness that had kept us going.
On his drive to the campsite, the director spoke highly of Matt. He said few kids his age could stay so calm in such a scary situation, let alone take practical steps to ask for help. Matt smiled shyly and said he’d learned those survival skills from the materials he’d studied for the camp. When we arrived, the camp was still bright with lights. I watched Matt run to join the other kids, proud that my son had turned a terrifying experience into a brave display of his growth.
