What is iodine (碘)
Iodine is an element found in seawater or some soils — mostly in coastal areas. A French chemist accidentally discovered it in 1811. Iodine’s name comes from a Greek word meaning violet-coloured.
Later in the 1800s, scientists began to understand people need iodine to control their metabolism (新陈代谢) and stay healthy. It is also important for a child’s brain development. One sign of iodine deficiency (缺乏) is an increase in the size of the neck.
Adding iodine to salt
In the past, experts realized they couldn’t solve the iodine deficiency problem by feeding everyone seaweed and seafood. But they learned iodine can be added to table salt.
Iodized salt first became available in 1924. By the 1950s, 70 percent of US households used iodized table salt. Some foods also had iodine. As a result, iodine deficiency in the US became rare.
But over the years, processed foods have come to make up a large part of the American diet. Although they contain salt, it isn’t iodized.
How much iodine is enough
While most Americans are getting enough iodine through diet, doctors worry this is not the case for women and children — the two groups most likely to be hurt by iodine deficiency.
It is advised that all pregnant (怀孕的) and breastfeeding (用母乳喂养的) women get 150 micrograms of iodine each day. As a result, doctors suggest that pregnant or breastfeeding women check labels to make sure the vitamins or supplements they take have iodine.
Some studies have linked even mild iodine deficiency to a lower score on an intelligence test known as an intelligence quotient (IQ) test. But experts say there has not yet been enough research to establish exactly how the US population is being affected by iodine deficiency.
21. When was the relationship between iodine and physical health discovered
A. In 1811. B. Later in the 1800s.
C. In1924. D. Later in the 1950s.
22. What is the most effective way to solve iodine deficiency
A. By using iodinated salts.
B. By adjusting dietary habits.
C. By consuming large amounts of seafood.
D. By reducing processed foods.
23. Who is most likely to be harmed by iodine deficiency
A. Men. B. Adults. C. Old people. D. Children and women.

It was a century before the Computer Age began. Ada Lovelace had imagined the modern-day computer. The model was never built. However, Lovelace’s writings helped her become famous. People now consider the woman the world’s first computer programmer.
The programme Lovelace wrote was to calculate an important number. However, the woman’s deeper influence was to see the potential of computing. The computer could go beyond calculating numbers, she wrote, to be used to create music and art. Later, this idea became the key concept of the Information Age.
Lovelace was born in 1815 into a wealthy family. She showed an interest in math and mechanics (机械学) from a young age. With her mother’s help, Lovelace made friends with big thinkers of the day. When she was 17, she was introduced to the British inventor Charles Babbage. In the two decades that followed, the two kept writing to each other to discuss math and science.
In 1843, when she was 27, Lovelace wrote her most influential article about computer science. She described how the computer would work and included a formula (公式) for calculating an important number. The formula is considered as the first computer programme. She also imagined a future in which computers could do jobs faster than humans. In many industries, Lovelace wrote, computers would supersede human workers.
Now, people celebrate Lovelace’s achievements every year. Ada Lovelace Day is held on the second Tuesday of every October. Lovelace’s stories have been passed down from generation to generation. People use them to encourage young girls to do well in science subjects. There is no reason why girls can’t become successful scientists. Just remember the world’s first computer programmer was a woman!
24. What is the key concept of the Information Age
A. The computer will be used to write articles.
B. The computer is mostly allowed to design artworks.
C. The computer is capable of more than calculation.
D. The computer can create better music than musicians.
25. How did Lovelace get the chance to make friends with big thinkers
A. By asking her classmates for help.
B. Thanks to her mother’s assistance.
C. Through her teacher’s introduction.
D. By writing letters to experts.
26. What does the underlined word “supersede” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Take the place of.
B. Take the benefit of.

As it moves across central Italy, an old train pulling carriages from the 1930s and 1950s crosses the forests of the Majella National Park and the Abruzzo highlands.
Across 100 kilometres, the Park Railway, also known as the Italian Transiberian, travels through valleys and tunnels and over old bridges called viaducts. It offers visitors a view of small, rural and hidden villages in the country.
It was the first of some 1,000 kilometres of rail line to have re-opened under a project by Fondazione FS, part of the state- controlled national rail company. The project called “Timeless tracks” aims to take visitors to forgotten parts of Italy instead of the popular cities.
Inspired by train travel in Switzerland, the project now carries 45,000 visitors a year across its 13 lines. Fondazione FS expects to open two new ones by 2026, both in the southern area of Sicily. Laura Colaprete, a local guide, said the trains draw Italians and foreigners, families and children, younger people who get off to hike and ride bicycles, and older people “who have time to spare”.
After climbing up almost 1,000 metres in altitude (海拔) , the Transiberian’s first stop is in Palena, a hill- top town known for its beautiful views over the national park. Traditional folk music accompanies people getting off the train, with local foods such as lamb skewers and soft pancakes and products by local artisans awaiting them at the station. “The train helps several small towns around here. This line was a dead line before,” said Gino Toppi, 60, as he helped his wife with the food stand in the small station.
Milan’s Bocconi University recently estimated that for every dollar spent by passengers on tickets, as much as three more are spent on food, tours and other purchases. The rail ticket costs between $32 and $76. That helps to support the economy of villages that have long lost population due to the declining birth rate and younger people leaving for the bigger cities.
28. Why has the Italian Transiberian been put into operation again
A. To lead tourists to forgotten places.
B. To promote historical relics.
C. To realize eco-friendly green travel.
D. To reduce local traffic pressure.
29. What can be known from Paragraph 4
A. This project will not expand in other areas.
B. The future of this project is promising.
C. This project only meets special tourists’ needs.
D. Fondazione FS runs this project with Switzerland.
30. What is Gino Toppi’s attitude towards the train
A. Critical. B. Worried.
C. Tolerant. D. Favourable.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The declining birth rate.
B. Younger people leaving for the bigger cities.
C. Local economic benefit from the train.
D. Attractive customs and traditions.

Most adults’ earliest memories date back to preschool, not infancy (婴儿). The gap in our autobiography from when we were a baby is known as “infantile amnesia”, and it is not just due to normal forgetting over time.
Two possible accounts exist for this phenomenon. First, infants may not be able to store memories. The hippocampus — a brain region key for memory — grows slowly in childhood. It may not work well enough for infants to keep memories, similar to adults with hippocampal damage who cannot store new memories. Another idea is that infants can store memories but lose access to them later. Studies on mice show their hippocampus stores early memories and keeps them into adulthood.
To test this in humans, our lab used fMRI (a safe brain imaging tool) to study awake infants — something not done before. Given infants’ high activity level and short attention time, both of which make it difficult to collect good data from them. As a result, most fMRI research in infants has been conducted while they sleep. But this wasn’t an option for our investigations because memories are based on experiences in waking life. Through more than 400 sessions and countless insights from families, we developed specialized techniques to keep awake infants still, happy, and engaged.
In a recent study, we showed 1-year-old infants photos of faces, objects and scenes during fMRI. Later, we gave them each familiar photo with a new one. If an infant looked longer at the familiar one, we knew they remembered it. We then checked brain data: the hippocampus was more active when infants viewed photos they later remembered. This proves the infant hippocampus can create short-term memories after a brief look, especially in 12- month-olds.
Our findings support the “lost access” idea, but questions remain: How long do these memories last Can infants remember complex events Why do most earliest memories start at age 4-5 if memories form at 1 Answering these will help understand language learning, developmental disorders, parenting and even memory loss in aging or Alzheimer’s disease.
32. What is the primary focus of the second paragraph
A. Mouse brain development processes.
B. Explanations about infantile amnesia.
C. Experimental methods to study memory.
D. Effects of hippocampal damage in adults.
33. Why is studying awake infants important for memory research using fMRI
A. Family involvement became unnecessary.
B. Data collection speed increased significantly.
C. Sleep studies cannot detect any infant memory.
D. It allows studying memories formed during wakefulness.
34. What key finding showed 12-month-olds form short-term memories
A. Their brain activity was like adults’.
B. They remained calm during brain scans.
C. They looked longer at new photos than familiar ones.
D. Their hippocampus was more active for remembered photos.
35. In which section of a magazine can we read the text
A. Education. B. Science.
C. Culture. D. Health.

In 2007, Jolena Rothweil was in the midst of a divorce (离婚). The process was overwhelming and expensive; most of her paycheck was going to her lawyer fees.
“I had just gotten backed into a corner where I felt like I was drowning,” Rothweil said. “I didn’t have any extra money for food or gas.”
One especially difficult week, her bank account hit zero. Desperate to make it to payday, she hesitantly asked a kind coworker, Steve Green, if she could borrow twenty dollars. Steve smiled and said he’d be happy to help — no questions asked.
“Fast forward to the next morning, and on my desk was a little white envelope with $200 in it, not twenty,” Rothweil remembered. “Inside was a short note that said, ‘You can’t pay it back, but you can pay it forward.’” She sat at her desk and cried quietly, touched that someone had noticed her pain and wanted to lift her up without expecting anything in return. “His gift made me really feel seen in what I was going through,” she said. “It wasn’t just the money — it was knowing someone cared enough to ease my burden (负担).”
A few years later, Rothweil’s life had stabilized, but two close friends — a married couple — faced their own financial difficulties. The husband had a part-time job that barely paid the rent, and the wife had just lost her job unexpectedly. They worried constantly about paying their heating bills that winter and couldn’t afford Christmas presents for their young children. As they talked, Rothweil heard the same fear and stress in their voices that she’d felt years earlier when she asked Steve for help.
“I understood exactly what they were going through,” Rothweil recalled. “I remembered how alone and scared I’d felt, and how Steve’s kindness had changed everything for me.” So she took out 200, found the photocopy of Steve’s note (which she’d kept all those years), and slipped both into an envelope.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next time she went over to their house to visit, she handed them the envelope on her way out.

The next time she went over to their house to visit, she handed them the envelope on her way out. At first, the couple stared at the envelope in confusion, fingers hovering hesitantly. Upon opening it and seeing the $200 cash and Steve’s note photocopy, the wife choked up and pulled Rothweil into a tight hug. “This is just a Band-Aid for your pain.” Rothweil said softly, recalling how Steve’s kindness had once patched up her own broken heart. Inspired by this act of love, the couple made a silent promise: they would pay the kindness forward as soon as they regained their footing.
Nearly 20 years later, Rothweil is happily remarried and still keeps Steve’s old note. Every anniversary, she and her husband set aside a sum of money from their savings, deciding together who might need a helping hand most, often slipping a copy of Steve’s note with their small gifts. Her old friends, who have fully recovered financially, now partner with Rothweil and her husband every year to donate school supplies to a local children’s shelter, naming the initiative “Steve’s Chain of Kindness”. The pay-it-forward chain that began with Steve’s 200 has stretched far beyond anyone’s imagination, a living legacy of love that Rothweil and her husband often share with their own children, hoping the kids will carry the torch forward too.
