M: Right, it’s so interesting. For a long time, I have been curious about natural environments known for their colorful and rich plant and animal life. But now, I’m more curious about dry places.
2.A
【原文】W: Why don’t you take the subway today It’s too difficult for you to drive in such bad weather. The rain won’t stop until afternoon.
M: You’re right. Rain is more troublesome than snow. It leads to poor visibility.
3.C
【原文】W: You look sleepy. What’s the matter
M: I didn’t sleep for the whole night because I had a long report to prepare for the manager.
W: You must be very tired now. You’d better go and get some sleep.
4.A
【原文】W: What are you doing tomorrow
M: I’m going to the island with my family. We’re leaving early at 6 a.m., so I’ll try to go to bed by nine o’ clock tonight.
5.B
【原文】W: The flowers on both sides of the road seem to come to life after the rain.
M: Yes, I wish the sun could come out from behind the clouds soon.
W: I hope so.

【原文】M: I’m so lonely. One of my friends is on holiday and the other is visiting his grandparents.
W: We’re going to the cinema tonight. Why don’t you come with us
7.B
【原文】W: David, I hear you’re trying to lose some weight. How do you plan to do that
M: I’ll go on a diet.

W: No, I didn’t see anyone and I wasn’t hurt.
M: Okay. When did you discover your house broken into
W: After I got back from night duty around six a.m.
M: Okay, do not touch anything in the house. We need to look for fingerprints.
W: Well, I’ll do as you say.
M: Is there anything missing

【原文】W: I know everyone looks at their phone these days, but you really should try reading a book instead.
M: But look at everything I can do on a phone, Mom. I can watch movies, play games, talk to people — lots of things.
W: I know. Phones can certainly be useful. But the right book can do something more.
M: What is that
W: It can take you out of yourself to another world. A world of your imagination.
M: You remind me of my friend Sarah. She always reads on the school bus in the morning. That’s what she says.
W: Well, as your mother, I want the best for you and I’m not sure that phones are always the best thing.
M: I understand. I might do as you said. Can you recommend a book to me
W: I’ve just finished a good one. I’ll get it for you.

【原文】W: Dennis, I’m writing a paper about body language in different countries. Could you talk with me about what you know
M: Sure. In Iran, people emphasize greetings. Even at a distance where hugs and kisses are not possible, people will make a gesture to say hello.
W: Speaking of that, when Maori meet, they rub each other’s noses at least two or three times in New Zealand. The more they do this, the better their relationship is. Anything else
M: Well, in Nigeria, it’s rude to give a thumbs-up sign.
W: While in Britain, Australia and New Zealand, travelers use it to ask for a ride. And in my motherland China, it’s used to praise someone. It looks like we need to be careful to use body language.
M: Yeah, you’d better search for more information online.
W: OK. The abstract of my paper is almost finished.
M: You also need to pay more attention to the body and the conclusion. And remember the conclusion should reflect your deeper understanding, which shouldn’t be shallow.
W: OK.
M: I hope you can publish your paper one day.

【原文】 You might not know about “Buy Nothing Day”, but it has been celebrated on the same day as Black Friday since 1997. The rule is easy: don’t buy anything for 24 hours. Many people are surprised at how hard this can be. The goal is to get people to think more about their spending and make better choices about what they buy and where they buy it from. For example, you could try not to buy clothes that are cheap but only worn a few times. Making these kinds of decisions can help the environment and save you money. So, what else can you do on Buy Nothing Day Some people protest at malls, while others stay away from stores and go for a walk in nature instead, enjoying the beauty of the outdoors and taking a break from the ongoing shopping culture. Another popular idea is that people give away their winter coats in November, and anyone who needs can take one on Buy Nothing Day. This not only helps those in need but also promotes a culture of sharing. By joining Buying Nothing Day, you can see how important it is to think carefully about what you buy and how it affects your money and the environment.

【原文】W: Harini Logan is a 14-year-old student from San Antonio, Texas. She finally won the Scripps National Spelling Bee after she failed to win for three times. Harini Logan’s winning came late Thursday. She spelled 21 words correctly during the 90-second spell-off. Her competitor, 12-year-old Vikram Raju of Aurora, Colorado just managed to spell 15 words correctly. Before the spell-off, Logan thought she had lost the competition, because she was told she had answered a question incorrectly during the vocabulary round of the spelling bee. A few minutes later, head judge Mary Brooks said the judges studied her answer. They decided to change their decision. It turned out her answer to that question was correct. Because of that, she could compete in the spell-off and finally won. Harini won $50,000 in prizes. The Scripps National Spelling Bee takes place in Washington, D. C. It began in 1925. It is held once a year. Vikram Raju came in second. He hopes to return next time.
