A reader has recently asked me how to face the uncertainty about the future without fear. It’s a great question because the fear visits us all. 1 Worse still, it can keep us holding onto things that are hurting us.
But why does uncertainty scare us in the first place The answer is we are comfortable in the cocoon (茧) we’ve built up — our possessions and people and places that we know well. 2 But the problem is not changes themselves but dealing with them. If you’re good at fighting changes, no uncertainty will frighten you. Here is what works for me.
3 New things can be scary because we may fall on our faces. So try something with no real risk, like learning to balance on a rope close to the ground or listening to a language-learning podcast. It is not as scary but will still boost your confidence in trying new things.
Prepare a change toolset. Learn how to cope with changes, whatever they are. Develop skills with which you can get a job or start a new business. Have friends and family you can depend on. 4 A toolset like this will give you confidence to handle almost all changes.
When you mess up, don’t see it as painful failure. The word “failure” is associated with negative things. Instead, start to look at “messing up” positively. 5
Try the above tips, and you will learn to embrace change and create new things that you have been afraid of creating.
A.Add thrilling adventures to your daily life.
B.Have a go at something new, but small and safe.
C.But there is no need to worry about what hasn’t come.
D.See it as the only way to learn, advance, and succeed.
E.Losing this familiar environment in life changes is scary.
F.If left undealt with, it can stop us from doing great things.
G.Learn ways to bond with strangers and survive on little.
What does life purpose mean and, more importantly, how does one find and fulfill it It has been a long journey getting to this point, and here is what I have learned so far along the way. 6
Your life purpose is not something you can define today, nor is it something you will ever fully know or accomplish during your lifetime. 7 Then we can say, “This is what that person’s life meant.”Play to your strengths.
8 You were born with certain natural talents and abilities — use them. Develop your natural talents into skills by studying and practicing those talents. There is nothing wrong with trying to learn new things, but the likelihood is that you were born with the abilities needed to fulfill your life purpose.Pursue your passions.
For whatever reason, we all feel passionate about certain things in life. In order to live your life purpose, you must become completely immersed in whatever it is, which means it must be something you are passionate about. 9 That way, it will be impossible to perform at the highest level.Focus on what you can control.
If there is one lesson I have lived repeatedly in my life, it is that there is only one thing you can control: yourself. No matter how hard you try, you absolutely cannot control the results of your actions. All that we can do in life is put forth our best efforts. 10
A.Embrace your life.
B.You are not capable of being all things to all people.
C.After all, opportunities always favor the prepared mind.
D.Remember your life purpose is a journey, not a destination.
E.Only when your life has ended, will we have the full picture of it
F.The path to living your purpose is paved with continual self-improvement.
G.Otherwise, you will be doing something that ultimately makes you miserable.
Summer is a wonderful season filled with lots of fun in the sun. But what if your job requires you to spend several hours outside each and every day 11 But today I’m sharing some easy ways to protect my skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Time of Day is Important
The sun is at its most intense (强烈的) level and UV is at its strongest between the hours of 10a.m. and 4 p.m. We typically try to complete our outside chores (家务) before 10 a.m. 12 Sometimes after 4 p.m. we’re back outside to finish up the mowing (割草), fencing or cattle working and can often work until dark. I’ve learned that the shorter your shadow underneath you, the stronger the UV rays can be. 13
Cover Arms and Legs
When my husband mows the yard, he wears heavy jeans and a long-sleeve shirt. Although he was initially very hesitant to wear a long-sleeve shirt, he was actually cooler than he would have been otherwise because that hot sun was not shining directly upon his skin. 14 It’s good to remember: When possible, wear the tightest-weave fabric you can.
Gloves Serve Double Duty
15 Most of the time I like to wear lightweight garden gloves with special fingertips to allow me to operate my smart phone without removing the gloves. Wearing gloves not only helps me hold things more securely, but they also prevent the skin on my hands from the sun.
A.I typically wear gloves when working outside.
B.A hat that shades your face and ears is a smart move.
C.Sun cream has its place in people’s skin-protection choices.
D.These tips get me through most days of our work outdoors.
E.When the sun starts getting high in the sky, we come inside.
F.So it’s best to be outside when your shadow is longer than your height.
G.I’ve learned that the tighter the weave, the more protection is received.
Translation is an essential tool for effective communication. A common way of getting any translation done is to turn to human translators. However, machine translators have developed rapidly in recent years. Many people claim that they will replace human translators soon. 16
Machines may fail to understand culture properly. Different cultures have different words that are unique to that specific culture. Machines cannot understand or recognize idioms, slang, and allusions (典故). 17 By contrast, human translators can find the suitable equivalent (对应物) in the target language based on the cultural background.
18 In different languages, there are words with various meanings, which can be a significant problem for machine translators. These words have to be placed in context to determine their true meanings and in many cases only human translators can do this. If you run a document with this kind of words through a machine translator, it may lead to inaccurate translations.
It is difficult to localize machines for different languages. New phrases are being developed in almost all languages. 19 If you feed new words into a machine translator, the machine might go “speechless” , trying to come up with the most appropriate way to translate the strange combination of words. Human translators, on the other hand, can pick up on the development in a language quickly.
It’s difficult for machines to distinguish style and tone. Every written document has a different style and tone. A document can have poetic, funny or persuasive style and tone. Machine translators may lose the intended style and tone existing in the original document. 20 And such a translation can hardly resonate (引起共鸣) with the person who reads it.
A.Machines can’t relate words to the context.
B.Machines can’t remember words of all languages
C.It doesn’t actually hold up for some reasons.
D.Thus the result is a flat and soulless translation.
E.Machine translators are unable to catch these changes in time.
F.This is one challenge they may find very difficult to overcome.
G.Machine translators are becoming more and more popular these days.

Indoor plants might look as if they just sit around not doing much, but in many ways they are the unsung heroes of the home. 26 , but studies have shown that they can promote people’s wellbeing by improving their mood (心情), reducing stress and helping their memory. What’s more, indoor plants are easy to look after and are not very expensive.
What are indoor plants
Indoor plants, also known as houseplants or pot plants, are plants that like to grow indoors. Many of these species (物种) are not ideally suited to growing outside in the UK, especially in the winter. 27 .
Why are indoor plants good for you
Will Spoelstra, who works at the Royal Botanic Gardens, says, “ 28 . I find during the winter months, plants around the house can really lift your mood.” Several studies have backed this up and found that indoor plants can improve creativity, focus and memory. There is also research showing that pot plants can clean the air around them by removing harmful gases, such as carbon dioxide. They also remove some harmful chemicals from paints or cooking. 29 .
Which plants can you grow
Aloe vera, peace lilies and spider plants are some of the species that are easy to grow indoors. You can buy plants from supermarkets, garden centres or online. Younger plants are often cheaper than fully grown ones, and you get to care for them as they mature — which is part of the joy of owning plants. “ 30 ,” Spoelstra says. “It can bring a new interest and focus into people’s lives and help to make the link between home and nature.”

Individuals dealing with regret often struggle with past decisions, whether direct actions or inactions. They may regret choices they believe unjustifiable, wishing they had acted differently. In other cases, they reflect on what they should have done because they failed to take the necessary steps to protect someone or themselves. 31 Fortunately, you can learn many techniques to understand, manage, and cope with feelings of regret when they arise.
Acknowledge Your Feelings
Acknowledging and accepting your feelings is essential when determining how to get over regret. 32 Doing so helps prompt you to think about strategies to minimize the pain of similar future experiences.
Give Yourself Time to Heal From a Past Regret
33 You must give yourself time to heal from the consequences of your actions. Constantly thinking about these choices prolongs negative thoughts and feelings. Focus on what relaxes, nourishes, and energizes you in positive ways. In time, the negative emotions will begin to subside.
Make Amends (补偿) for Your Mistakes
Sometimes, we cannot control the outcome of a situation. Still, decisions we make during stressful times can make or break a relationship. Consider making amends for your mistakes if you regret hurting someone. 34
Regret comes in many forms, whether big or small. These regrets can lead to motivation for personal growth, or they can take you down a pathway to depression and self-chastisement. 35 Focus on accepting your emotions, making amends (when possible), and looking toward the future.
A.Dealing with regret and guilt requires patience.
B.Doing so encourages self-compassion and can help you push past regret.
C.How you manage these feelings can make a real difference in your life.
D.Specifically, identify which emotion you feel “I feel regret” rather than just thinking “I feel bad”.
E.Doing so can help you relieve guilt and rekindle a broken part of your relationship with a loved one.
F.Feeling regret is a normal part of life, so treat yourself with kindness as you find ways to deal with your emotions.
G.Living with regret often becomes harder when individuals believe they mishandled a situation or missed once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
Small Kindnesses on Campus
Campus life is filled with busy classes, endless assignments and tight schedules, which often make us focus only on our own goals. 36 However, those small, unexpected acts of kindness can light up our days and build a warm community.
A simple smile or a greeting can make a big difference. When you pass a classmate in the hallway, a warm “Good morning” or a friendly smile doesn’t take much effort, but it can cheer someone up who is feeling down. 37 It helps break the ice between strangers and makes our campus feel like a home.
Lending a helping hand is another way to spread kindness. For example, if you see a classmate struggling with heavy books, offer to carry some. If someone misses a class, share your notes with them willingly. 38 These small actions show that you care and can help others get through difficult moments.
Being patient and understanding also matters a lot. Everyone has bad days, and sometimes we may be slow to respond or make mistakes. 39 Instead of complaining or criticizing, give them a little patience and support. This kindness not only helps others but also makes you a more empathetic person.

I first discovered wood carving on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I was looking around in a local bookstore when a book titled Easy Woodcarving caught my eye. 51 I had always loved working with my hands, and the idea of turning a plain piece of wood into something beautiful seemed magical.
I bought the book and a small carving kit that came with a knife, a few gouges (弧口凿), and some soft basswood (椴木) blocks. 52
The first thing I learned was that wood carving is all about patience. 53 I drew it onto the wood block and then began to carve. The knife moved slowly through the wood, and I had to be careful not to cut too deep. Each cut showed a bit more of the bird’s shape, and I was attracted by how the wood changed under my hands.
54 You have to think ahead and plan your cuts. Sometimes, the wood would crack, and I’d have to adjust my design. But each mistake taught me something new. I learned to keep my tools sharp, and to take my time.
After a few weeks, my little bird was starting to take shape. I added details like feathers and the shape of its eyes. Finally, I sanded it smooth and applied a light color to bring out the wood’s natural beauty. 55 It wasn’t perfect, but it was mine, and I had made it from nothing.
A.I decided to try painting instead of wood carving at first.

G.When I held the finished bird in my hands, I felt a deep sense of achievement.
How to Be a Healthy INTP
INTP, one of the 16 types in the Myers-Briggs personality classification system, stands for “introversion (内向型), intuition (直觉力), thinking, and perceiving.” 56 Yet, as one of the most uncommon types, if you’re an INTP, you might struggle to find your place in the world. Thankfully, we’ve got tons of tips to help you live a fulfilling life.
Work on understanding your emotions.
As an INTP, you may find yourself ignoring or not understanding your emotions. 57 When you’re feeling a certain way, pause and take stock. Is your emotion based in fear, anger, surprise, disgust, sadness, or joy With practice, you can learn to recognize and manage your feelings.
Develop your self-confidence.
Your personality type makes you both analytical and critical. If you spend too much time criticizing yourself, you could damage your self-esteem. Take time to remind yourself of your positive qualities. 58
Keep things organized and try not to procrastinate (拖延).
As an INTP, you might struggle to complete tasks that don’t interest you. Tasks like tidying up may also fall by the wayside. Be aware of your tendencies and make time to clean and organize your living and work spaces. 59 60
As an INTP, you likely have a tendency to be a peace-maker. Or, you may tend to argue in order to prove your point. Aim for a balance here — don’t avoid conflicts altogether, but don’t start them unnecessarily. Work on speaking up in a polite, respectful manner when something bothers you. Use “I” statements to tell others how you feel while avoiding blaming them.
A.Enhance your skills to handle conflicts properly.
B.Express yourself directly when disagreeing with others.
C.Your emotions might even seem other-worldly and confusing.

In daily interactions, the power of speech is often underestimated. 61 I think there exist four basic principles that make our communication truly influential. Remarkably, the first letters of these principles combine to form a meaningful word.
62 I refer not to small ice balls from the sky, but to its other meaning: to greet or praise with enthusiastic approval. This is how our words will be received if we consistently stick to the principles.
So what do they stand for Let’s break them down. The ‘H’ is honesty — being truthful, direct, and clear. The ‘A’ represents authenticity — being genuine (真诚的) and not pretending to be someone else. 63 I think it is an accurate way to put it. The ‘I’ is for integrity, which means consistently following through on your promises. Finally, the ‘L’ signifies love, a deep goodwill for others. Yet remember, true power appears only when these principles work in harmony. Absolute honesty can sometimes be unnecessarily mean. 64 In such situations, truth needs to become constructive with love rather than hurtful.
So hail Now, imagine a world where we all communicate from this foundation — grounded in honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love. Imagine people listening with conscious (有意识的) attention in suitable environments. 65
A.The word is “hail” (冰雹), with a great definition as well.
B.My friend once described it as standing in your own truth.
C.It would surely be a world of beauty and understanding.
D.It has an idea worth spreading.
E.Yet, it is our words that can inspire and bring about change.
F.Telling others “You look ugly today,” might be honest but unkind.
G.However, it is often challenging to get our meaning across.
Eco-friendly ways to water your garden
Whether you’re trying to prevent your lawn becoming a desert, or want to keep your plants healthy, saving water in your garden can save you money.
Saving water in the garden helps us live more sustainably to protect our planet, with the added benefit of cutting your house bills. 66 .
When to water
It’s all in the timing-water in the early hours of the morning to reduce evaporation. The water will sink deeper into the soil and keep your thirsty plant happy for the whole day. 67 . If you water in the midday heat you run the risk of scorching your plants and damaging them.
Recycle water
Think of all the water we tip away down the drain, whether from washing-up or even bathwater. But this domestic wastewater, or grey water, may also be used in the garden.
68 , but leaves very dirty or greasy water for the more rugged plants such as trees and shrubs, and don’t reuse water containing bleach (漂白剂) and cleaning products. You can also get greywater systems installed which collect waste water from your house and store it, providing a source for irrigation.
69
Admittedly the British weather can be unpredictable, but if you are expecting an impending heatwave, hold off on cutting the lawn. By giving your lawn mower a rest and allowing the grass to grow slightly longer than usual grass stays a lot greener in dry conditions.
Reducing the amount of weeding you do can also keep your lawn looking healthier as drought-resistant clovers and trefoils don’t turn yellow when they are short of water.
The bigger the better
70 . They also provide roots with more space to grow and absorb water and nutrients. The smaller the pot, the more diligent you need to be monitoring soil moisture levels.
A.Let your lawn grow longer
B.This may sound crazy to some
C.Reduce the amount of watering
D.Bigger plant pots mean more water can be stored
E.Plus this will encourage root growth beneath the surface
F.Using the tips below will help you better manage your garden
G.Washing-up liquid or ordinary soap won’t do any harm to your garden
When finances feel unclear or unpredictable, your nervous system may remain on high alert, attempting to protect you from potential dangers. 71 Fortunately, our financial situation does not simply determine our peace. It is shaped even more by how we relate to our money.
When you have simple habits that help you see what is happening, make thoughtful decisions, and feel prepared for what comes next, your stress begins to soften. These supportive habits are designed for you. 72
Create a simple and supportive spending plan. A spending plan is not about limiting your life. 73 Knowing what is coming and where it is going reduces fear of the unknown. You gain clarity, which creates emotional comfort.
Track what comes in and what goes out. Recording your income and spending is a powerful way to create emotional clarity. In this way, you can see what is happening with your money. 74 Awareness helps you make choices with confidence instead of reacting from worry or uncertainty. Consider checking in once a week and observing. Some people like using apps for this, while others prefer a simple notebook or notes on their phone. What matters most is consistency, not perfection.
75 It is more than a savings account. It is a sense of security. Knowing you have something set aside, even if it starts very small, can soften your stress in a noticeable way. It sends a message to your mind that you are cared for and prepared. You do not need a large amount to begin. Start with what feels realistic. Even setting aside a few dollars each week creates momentum. The habit matters more than the size. Over time, these small amounts add up and begin to form a foundation of support.
A.That constant worry can be exhausting.
B.Build a small but steady emergency fund.
C.Make a kind and realistic plan for paying down debt.
D.They may help you feel more grounded with your money.
E.It’s about helping you feel calm and informed with your money.
F.Staying aware and calm can help you know more about your account.
G.Knowing it helps you remove the guesswork that often leads to stress.

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了机器翻译无法取代人工的翻译的几点原因。
16.根据上文“Translation is an essential tool for effective communication. A common way of getting any translation done is to turn to human translators. However, machine translators have developed rapidly in recent years. Many people claim that they will replace human translators soon.(翻译是有效沟通的重要工具。完成任何翻译的一种常见方法是求助于人工翻译。然而,机器翻译近年来发展迅速。许多人声称他们很快就会取代人工翻译)”以及后文“Machines may fail to understand culture properly.(机器可能无法正确理解文化)”等列举了机器无法取代人工翻译的理由,可知,本句是在说明这种说法并不成立。故C选项“由于某些原因,这实际上并不成立”符合语境,故选C。
17.根据上文“Different cultures have different words that are unique to that specific culture. Machines cannot understand or recognize idioms, slang, and allusions
18.根据后文“In different languages, there are words with various meanings, which can be a significant problem for machine translators. These words have to be placed in context to determine their true meanings and in many cases only human translators can do this. If you run a document with this kind of words through a machine translator, it may lead to inaccurate translations.(在不同的语言中,有不同含义的单词,这对于机器翻译来说可能是一个重大问题。这些词必须放在上下文中才能确定它们的真正含义,在许多情况下只有人工翻译才能做到这一点。如果你通过机器翻译运行带有这类单词的文档,可能会导致翻译不准确)”可知,本段的主旨是机器无法联系上下文,A选项中context对应后文context。故A选项“机器不能把单词和上下文联系起来”符合语境,故选A。
19.根据上文“It is difficult to localize machines for different languages. New phrases are being developed in almost all languages.(为不同的语言本地化机器是很困难的。几乎所有的语言都在发展新的短语)”以及后文“If you feed new words into a machine translator, the machine might go “speechless” , trying to come up with the most appropriate way to translate the strange combination of words. Human translators, on the other hand, can pick up on the development in a language quickly.(如果你把新单词输入机器翻译,机器可能会“无语”,试图想出最合适的方法来翻译这些奇怪的单词组合。另一方面,人工翻译可以迅速了解语言的发展)”可知,后文的例子表明语言发展迅速,机器无法适应新的短语,导致翻译失败。故E选项“机器翻译无法及时捕捉到这些变化”符合语境,故选E。
20.根据上文“It’s difficult for machines to distinguish style and tone. Every written document has a different style and tone. A document can have poetic, funny or persuasive style and tone. Machine translators may lose the intended style and tone existing in the original document.(机器很难区分风格和语气。

56.根据上文“INTP, one of the 16 types in the Myers-Briggs personality classification system, stands for “introversion (内向型), intuition (直觉力), thinking, and perceiving.”(INTP是迈尔斯-布里格斯人格分类体系中16种类型之一,其含义为“内向型、直觉力、思考、感知”)”以及后文“Yet, as one of the most uncommon types, if you’re an INTP, you might struggle to find your place in the world. Thankfully, we’ve got tons of tips to help you live a fulfilling life.(然而,作为最罕见的类型之一,如果你是INTP类型的人,你可能会难以在世上找到自己的位置。
58.根据上文“Your personality type makes you both analytical and critical. If you spend too much time criticizing yourself, you could damage your self-esteem. Take time to remind yourself of your positive qualities.(你的性格使你兼具分析能力和批判精神。如果花太多时间自我批评,可能会损害你的自尊心。花些时间提醒自己身上的优点吧)”可知,前文提醒正视自身优点,E项“在办公桌上贴上鼓励自己的便签,提醒自己有多么了不起!”举例贴鼓励便签自我肯定,贴合段落主旨。
59.根据上文“As an INTP, you might struggle to complete tasks that don’t interest you. Tasks like tidying up may also fall by the wayside. Be aware of your tendencies and make time to clean and organize your living and work spaces.(作为一个INTP类型的人,你可能会难以完成那些不让你感兴趣的任务。比如整理家务这类事情也可能被你忽略掉。要留意自己的这种倾向,并抽出时间来整理和整顿你的生活和工作空间)”可知,本段的建议是拒绝拖延。D项“把一直拖延的项目当作优先事项去处理”承接上文,符合语境。
60.根据后文“As an INTP, you likely have a tendency to be a peace-maker. Or, you may tend to argue in order to prove your point. Aim for a balance here — don’t avoid conflicts altogether, but don’t start them unnecessarily. Work on speaking up in a polite, respectful manner when something bothers you. Use “I” statements to tell others how you feel while avoiding blaming them.(作为一个INTP类型的人,你可能倾向于充当和平调解者的角色。或者,你可能会倾向于通过争论来证明自己的观点。在此要寻求一种平衡——不要完全回避冲突,但也不要无端挑起争端。当有事情让你感到困扰时,试着以礼貌、尊重的方式表达自己的看法。使用“我”语句来向他人传达你的感受,同时避免指责他们)”可知,本段围绕冲突处理、温和表达观点展开,A项“提升自己处理冲突的能力”作为小标题,统领全段。
