Want to find out how you can learn a new language quickly, without the need for expensive classes or language learning software 1 You just need to be willing to work hard and not be afraid to make mistakes. The following specific tips may help you.
2 The best way to learn a new language is to speak it. Too often, people spend all their time studying grammar and memorizing words. Talking to a person who speaks your target language as their mother tongue will help you feel more motivated than staring at a book.
Study the language every day. People often claim to have studied a language “for five years” and still not be fluent. But when they say five years, they probably mean that they studied the language for only a couple of hours a week over that entire time period. 3 — if you want to learn a new language successfully, you’re going to have to study the language every day.
Carry a dictionary at all times. Carrying a dictionary with you will save you a lot of time. 4 It can be an actual, physical dictionary, or a dictionary app on your phone — you just need to be able to consult it quickly whenever you need a word.
Watch, listen, read and write in your chosen language. Possibly the easiest thing you can do is watch television shows or movies in the language you are trying to learn. 5 Besides, download podcasts or tune in to radio stations in your chosen language. This is a great way to immerse yourself in the language while you’re on the go.
A.Let’s get one thing clear.
B.There are really no secrets.
C.So get one as soon as possible!
D.Connect with a native speaker.
E.Language learning is based on repetition.
F.Carrying a dictionary will allow you to find the necessary word.
G.You should also attempt to read and write in your new language.
How Houseplants Boost Your Mental Health
Growing indoor plants is becoming a global wellness trend. A 2025 WHO report shows 68% of the potted plants kept at home are not just for decoration. 6 Studies reveal that touching rosemary leaves reduces cortisol (皮质醇) by 19%, while watering orchids calms people down just like deep thought or quiet rest does.
The magic lies in three aspects. 7 Caring for leaves or observing green trees creates natural“micro-breaks” from digital screens. This explains why office workers with desk plants report 30% less tiredness in their eyes.
8 Harvard neuroscientists found that successfully growing plants triggers dopamine(多巴胺) release, creating a feeling of success similar to completing a crossword puzzle.“Each new leaf gives clear proof of your growing skills,” explains Dr. Emma Lin.
Surprisingly, plants enhance social bonds. 9 People who live in apartments and exchange plant cuttings have 45% more neighborhood munity gardens also become spaces for inter-generational storytelling, where elders teach herbal knowledge to children.
Starting with easy-care plants ensures early successes, which fuels motivation. Even an ordinary plant pot next to your window can be your stress-reliever. Early wins with easy-to-grow plants build confidence. 10
A.Plants offer a natural escape from digital overload.
B.For beginners, choose plants matching your lifestyle.
C.Growing plants helps to bring about a sense of achievement.
D.They’ re actually helpful in improving emotional well-being.
E.Urban planners are building“green walls” in subway stations.
F.For example, 73% of plant owners share gardening tips online.
G.Seeing your first new leaf is like making a small breakthrough.
Literature is often called the greatest teacher. It takes readers on journeys to distant lands, different times, and unknown worlds. 11 After a long day of dealing with daily stress, reading a good story can be like taking a deep breath. Through stories, we can experience lives we’ve never lived and understand feelings we may never have felt.
One of the greatest values of literature is its ability to develop empathy (共情). 12 For example, reading The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank allows us to feel the fear and hope of a Jewish girl during World War II. We learn to share the joys and sorrows of characters, which helps us become more understanding and kind.
Moreover, literature enriches our language skills. Reading classic works allows us to learn rich vocabulary, lovely phrases, and well-built sentence structures. For example, when you read a novel by Charles Dickens, you may learn new ways to describe a city or a person. 13
14 By reading literary works, we can learn about the customs, beliefs, and struggles of people in different times. Reading Dream of the Red Chamber helps us understand family life and social rules in ancient China. Literature helps us appreciate the diversity of human experience and gain a deeper understanding of our own world.
In a world filled with rapid changes, literature remains a lifelong teacher. 15 A textbook tells you facts, but literature teaches you about life. It challenges us to think critically, dream bravely, and grow into better selves. Whether you are happy or sad, busy or free, a good book is always there waiting for you.
A.It helps us escape from reality for a while.
B.Also, literature is a window to human soul.
C.It offers wisdom that no textbook can provide.
D.Literature also serves as a bridge to history and culture.
E.Yet a textbook alone cannot make you a better person.
F.When reading novels, we step into different characters’ shoes.
G.This helps improve our writing and express ourselves better.

If you have no other things with family or friends to do, consider spending your time to finish tasks that you haven’t done for a long time. 19 Other good ideas include cleaning your clothes, sorting out your bookshelf, and washing your car.
Make new friends.
If you don’t have anyone to go out with, don’t worry. You can meet new people at clubs or concerts. Don’t be shy to talk to others. Don’t be afraid to approach and talk to people you meet. 20

To protect yourself and your information, you’ll want to use long and strong passwords on the Web that are easy for you to recall but difficult for others to guess. However, some of the most commonly used passwords (密码) are based on family names, hobbies, or just a simple pattern. 21 Let’s take a look at some of the most common password mistakes and how to fix them.
Password: brian12 kate 5 — It’s my kids’ names and ages.
Problem: This password uses too much personal information, along with common words.
Solution: 22 And rather than using family names, we could combine a character from a movie with a type of food. For example, Chewbacca and pizza could become chEwbAccA&p! ZZa.
Password: w3St! — It’s just the beginning of my street address with a few extra characters.
Problem: 23 It also includes part of the user’s address, which is publicly available (可获得的) information.
Solution: A stronger version of this password would be much longer, ideally more than 10 characters. We could also use a nearby street name instead of her current address. For example, Pemberly Ave could become PeMberLY% Av.
Password: 123abccba321 — 24
Problem: While patterns like this are easy to remember, they’re also some of the first things a hacker (黑客) might guess when trying to get your account (账户).
Solution: Remember that random passwords are much stronger than simple patterns. If you’re having trouble creating a new password, try using a password generator (密码生成器) instead. Here’s an example of a generated password: #eV $plg& qf.
Password: BrAve Z! 2 — I use the same passwords for all my accounts.
Problem: 25 However, remember that you should never use the same password with different accounts.
Solution: Create a unique password for each of your online accounts.
A.This password is available at any time.
B.This password is too short and simple.
C.It’s long and difficult for someone else to guess.
D.There’s nothing really wrong with this password.
E.It’s easy to remember the simple pattern and type on my keyboard.
F.This kind of password is easy to remember but highly insecure (不安全的).
G.A stronger password would use symbols, capital letters, and a random order.
Now we live in the digital age. We spend a lot of time online, doing things like chatting with friends, studying, and shopping. It’s important, especially for students, to learn how to practice good virtues in the online world. 26
27 Always tell the truth when you are online. Never copy others’ homework or cheat in online tests. Don’t spread lies or fake news. Even if no one is watching, you should still be honest.
Being kind is another important virtue. 28 If you see someone being bullied online, don’t just watch — try to help them. If a friend asks for help, give them kind advice instead of laughing at them. Small acts of kindness can make people feel better.
We also need to be responsible online. 29 Don’t post harmful or rude words. Think carefully before you comment on others. If you see fake news or bad information, report it to the platform right away.
Practicing virtues isn’t hard. It’s in every small choice we make. 30 Keep honesty, kindness, and responsibility in your heart, and you will be a good person everywhere.
A.Here are some simple ways to do this.
B.Honesty is the most important rule online.
C.Try to help people instead of hurting them.
D.Protect your personal information carefully.
E.It doesn’t matter if you are online or in real life.
F.Always think about how your words affect others.
G.Use strong passwords and change them regularly.
For most of my life, I always treated taste as fixed. When I moved to London, I threw myself into work while my housemates were endlessly trying new things. My automatic “no” to anything that “wasn’t my thing” only kept me trapped in the same daily routine. That left me feeling flat and a little empty. I began to question whether my taste is fixed or could be trained. I once read that children need eight to fifteen tries to accept a new food. 31
I decided to start small. When a friend invited me to a book club, I resisted the instinct (本能) to dismiss it despite my longstanding dislike of reading and went anyway. 32 Now I spend mornings reading physical books instead of wandering aimlessly.
Then came music and performance — all things I had previously disregarded. 33 Gradually, I became fascinated by the unfamiliar rhythms and movements and felt proud of my survival in the end.
34 However, I stopped saying no before I had even begun. Most recently, I tried out my local library’s chess club. I was easily 30 years younger than everyone else, but that didn’t matter. Sitting opposite people with wildly different life stories made me realize how rarely I speak with other generations. We talked about their past careers, local news and new chess moves. Interestingly, I felt more connected there than with people of my age.
Research suggests that engaging your curiosity in new activities can help protect against age - related cognitive (认知的) decline. 35 Getting outside my comfort zone now gives me a rush.
A.Yet, I was eager for engagement.
B.I didn’t love everything straight away.
C.For me, it is far more than brain health.
D.Initially, I was awkward and sometimes confused.
E.As expected, new tastes rarely come without discomfort.
F.To my surprise, I enjoyed the discussion and the people there.
G.Why shouldn’t the same principle apply to social activities for adults
How Should I Use AI Chatbots Like ChatGPT
Some people say that AI (Artificial Intelligence) can be unpredictable and unreliable. I have seen them give wrong answers many times. But I have also seen these AI programs do amazing things that surprised me. 36 Here are some things that AI is especially good at right now:
Explaining concepts at different levels
I have been using AI as my personal tutor. If I start a new topic, I will ask it to explain the idea at a high school level so that I can understand the basics. 37 Using an infinitely patient tutor to guide me through new subjects feels like a “superpower” which helps me learn faster.
Getting help with creative work
AI can also be a good tool to help you find new ideas. If you are trying to prepare questions for an interview or write a story, AI can give you some thoughtful suggestions. 38 As a famous professor said, “AI provides a way of giving yourself a push when you are stuck.”
Practicing for real-world tasks
39 When I had to have a difficult talk with a friend, I asked an AI program to play a role-playing game with me. “Pretend you are my friend, and react the way you think my friend might react,” I told it. Then I practiced the conversation. It made me feel more confident. Although chatbots cannot replace real human friendship, they can offer you basic advice and feedback without judging you.
Summarizing large amounts of text
One of the most powerful abilities of AI is to quickly summarize long articles. I have used AI to “read” long articles and difficult papers, after which it tells me the most important points. Usually, they can find the main ideas correctly, even if some details are missing. 40
A.However, it often brings us a lot of trouble in our daily life.
B.If I am still confused, I will ask it to explain again at a lower level.
C.I use AI to practice for tasks that I find difficult or even frightening.
D.This helps people overcome difficulties and start hard projects easily.
E.It saves me a lot of time when I need to deal with complex information.
F.Actually, they can be very helpful if we know how to use them properly.
G.Modern technology is changing the way we talk with our family members.

How to Escape a Building Fire
Fire safety in tall buildings is very important because fires here can be especially dangerous. 51 So, it’s hard for everyone to get out quickly in an emergency. Fires can also spread fast through stairs and air conditioning systems. However, there are a few things you can do to keep yourself safe.
Head to the nearest exit.
If you’re at home, an exit could be a door, window, or even a fire escape ladder. 52 It is usually marked with an EXIT sign, a picture of a person running through a door, or both. If smoke is present, stay low.
Check the door for any signs of fire on the other side.
First, feel the door and doorknob (门把手) with the back of your hand. 53 Then, check around the door for signs of smoke or heat. If you notice red-hot ashes (灰烬) or black smoke coming from under the door, do not open it. Try to find another exit.
54 This will help reduce the spread of fire to your room if the fire manages to reach there, as well as ensure that any fire that might be in your room does not create a dangerous situation. Doors do an effective job at stopping fire, which is why fire departments recommend closing your bedroom door before you go to sleep.
Do not use the elevator.
You could get trapped if you decide to use it as your escape. Use the stairs to make your escape if you’re on the higher floor of the building, or wait for firefighters to help you. 55
A.If it feels warm or hot, don’t open it.
B.Many people live or work in these buildings.
C.They can operate the elevators with a special key.
D.Speak clearly as you describe where the fire is happening.
E.Make sure your door remains closed but unlocked upon exit.
F.If you’re in a public building, find the closest emergency exit.
G.Check the alarms each month to make sure that they’re working.

As students face heavy study tasks and frequent exams, many struggle with complex learning psychology. Some feel stressed easily, while others often delay their study plans and then blame themselves. 61 Instead of ignoring these feelings, learning to deal with them properly is the key to better study efficiency.
A common psychological problem among students is exam anxiety. When exams are coming, many students feel nervous, can’t sleep well or even fail to focus on review. 62 Deep breathing, positive self-talk and reasonable review schedules can help calm their nerves and build confidence.
63 Some students often put off homework or revision until the last minute, even though they know it will lead to more pressure. The root of this problem is usually the fear of failure or a lack of clear study goals, rather than pure laziness. Realizing this can help students stop blaming themselves and solve the problem positively.
Lack of learning motivation is another troubling mental state. Some students feel bored with study and don’t know why they should keep working hard. 64 Setting small, achievable goals and rewarding themselves for finishing tasks can gradually bring back their passion for learning.
65 Students should accept their emotions and turn to teachers, parents or friends for help when necessary. By adjusting their mindset properly, they can improve not only their grades but also their mental health.
A.It is unwise to stay up late for exam review.
B.Another widespread problem is academic delay.

Never Over-Study
When you spend too much time studying, you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become “junk time”. You think you’re studying but you’re just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times and you’re not getting anywhere. 66 Taking breaks will make you energetic again and refresh your mind. Besides, it will give your mind sometime to take in what you have been doing.
● Plan your plan.
67 They actually plan what they are going to do. They actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do. Set a plan, a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit. 68
● Front up to the toughest work first.
Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That’s fair enough. The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and so if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy, your batteries will be low when it comes the time to deal with the hard part. So what happens then 69 We all do it. We really shouldn’t, though. So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.
● 70 .
Do we really have to explain this Just turn them off for an hour. We promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don’t text your friends, don’t chat while doing memory activities, don’t make phone calls, just focus on what you’re doing. Even if you focus on work for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right
A.Instead, take regular breaks.
B.You get tired and impatient and just give up.
C.Get off social networking sites and turn off the phone.

How to Avoid Over-Tourism
Over-tourism has become a serious problem in many popular travel destinations, causing damage to the environment and local culture. 71 Here are some practical tips to help you travel in a more responsible way and avoid contributing to over-tourism.
72 Instead of visiting the most crowded scenic spots, try to explore less famous places. Small towns and rural areas often have more authentic local culture and fewer tourists. For example, instead of going to the busy city center, you can visit nearby villages and experience local life.
Travel during off-peak seasons. Peak seasons like holidays and summer vacations attract large numbers of tourists, which puts great pressure on local resources. 73 You can not only avoid crowds but also enjoy lower prices and a more peaceful travel experience.
Respect local culture and customs. When traveling to a new place, take time to learn about the local traditions and follow them. 74 For example, dress appropriately when visiting religious sites and avoid making noise in quiet areas.
Support local businesses. Choose local hotels, restaurants and shops instead of international chains. This way, your money will directly benefit the local people and help protect their way of life. 75 By following these tips, we can all travel in a way that is respectful to local communities and the environment.
A.Explore less crowded destinations
