Renee Fluker was a full-time social worker for the state of Michigan when one day her teenage son made a remark that stayed with her. Her son, one of only a few Black students on his Detroit high school golf team, said, “It would be great if other Black kids learned how to play golf and went on to college.”
The 69-year-old Fluker was inspired by that thought and finally founded the nonprofit she runs today: the College Career (职业) & Beyond Midnight Golf Program. “Playing golf at night is impossible unless someone shines a light,” she says. “That’s exactly what we do. We use golf to create possibilities, helping young people see a brighter future.”
At first she struggled to find students. What finally worked, Fluker says, was offering free pizza at a community center. Along with their pizza, the students got free golf lessons and listened to talks about college and careers. In 2001 the group had 17 students. Last year,250 seniors from 76 southeast Michigan high schools were selected from about 2,000 applicants. In recent years, the students have attended special classes at the School at Marygrove. While volunteers teach the students skills such as writing college applications and filling in job forms, golf lessons are taught by professionals from the PGA of America, an organization that aims to grow interest and participation in golf.
So far, more than 130 college students have graduated from the Midnight Golf Program. Fluker says she is “moved to tears” when she thinks of their success. One early student, for example, grew up in public housing, went to Howard University, and finally received a Ph.D.in nursing.
Fluker says being around so many young people helps keep her feeling young. Her friends called her “crazy” for not enjoying her retirement. But because of her efforts, many people have been helped.

The world is a noisy place, filled with various sounds that often make it hard to focus. With support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Mounya Elhilali is helping us listen more effectively — not just to conversations but also to the important sounds used to diagnose (诊断) disease and the signs that help people with hearing challenges move safely in their surroundings. Elhilali is leading efforts to make stethoscopes (听诊器) intelligent, improve speech recognition in noisy environments, and push the limits of how technology can improve our ability to understand what we hear.
In 2022, Elhilali, together with her colleagues, developed a smart digital stethoscope. “Traditional stethoscopes, while widely used, are often unreliable due to noise, the need for expert interpretation, and subjective variability,” she says. “Our research introduces new, advanced listening technology that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with new sensing materials to make diagnoses more reliable.”
This advanced stethoscope uses a special material that can be adjusted to reduce or block out some background noises, making lung sounds clearer. It also uses AI, including models of the airways and neural networks, to study breathing sounds. Elhilali and her team trained their algorithm (算法) on over 1,500 patients across Asia and Africa.
This technology is currently being used in clinical studies in Bangladesh, Malawi, South Africa, and Guatemala, as well as in the pediatric emergency room at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. A version of the device, now called Feelix, has received FDA approval and is being marketed by the Baltimore spinoff Sonavi Labs.
“This technology is already making a difference. It is being used in rural clinics, mobile health units, and large hospitals to assist emergency responders and health care providers around the world in providing time-saving, cost-effective pulmonary assessments (肺部评估), especially in areas with limited access to imaging tools like X-rays and ultrasounds,” Elhilali said.

I’m Kay. I was the kind of child who couldn’t just accept that something worked. I would take apart everyday stuff, not to destroy it, but to understand why it worked the way it did. This desire to question, reimagine, and improve became the foundation of everything I’ve done since.
That same curiosity followed me into academia. During my PhD journey, I desired to strengthen medication adherence (遵循) among people living with serious infectious diseases (传染病) in developing countries. However, the challenge was contextual, cultural, psychological, and systemic. Contrary to the traditional approach of trying to fix the patient to improve adherence, I turned my attention to the communications that the patients were having with their healthcare providers.
That idea led me to motivational interviewing (MI), a person-centred technique based on open dialogue, understanding, and cooperation to drive behavioral change. On the surface, it seemed promising. But I quickly realized it wasn’t a plug-and-play solution. As I was working in a developing country with entirely different cultural dynamics, it became clear that ideas like personal choices and open emotional expression didn’t quite translate in the same way. Thus, I had to adapt the approach to fit the context and employ the adapted version to train doctors.
Essentially, I spent time understanding the local values, how people communicate, what trust looks like, and how authority was understood. I reworked the method — not to water it down, but to make it fit. The results were powerful. Patients became more involved, more confident, and surprisingly, the trained doctors started employing the approach in other clinical contexts such as patients with diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure.
This was a defining moment. It showed me that true innovation isn’t just about invention — it’s about translation, adaptation, and understanding. It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them get to where they need to be.
27.What can we learn about Kay from the first paragraph
A.She was fond of working. B.She enjoyed finding problems.
C.She had an inquiring mind. D.She longed to be a doctor.
28.Why does the author mention “a plug-and-play solution” in Paragraph 3
A.To show the method was easy to use. B.To suggest cultural differences mattered.
C.To stress the need for doctor training. D.To explain why she adapted the method.
29.What was Kay’s contribution to MI
A.She reinvented its core. B.She promoted its broader uses.
C.She simplified its rules. D.She proved MI failed in some cultures.
30.What does Kay’s experience show
A.One size doesn’t fit all. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Practice makes perfect. D.Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Faced with the growing dangers of climate change, scientists are considering a new plan: moving endangered animals to new habitats far from their old homes. This method, called assisted migration (辅助迁徙), is designed to protect these animals from rising temperatures and habitat loss.
A recent example is the relocation of the Sooty storm-petrel, a seabird that usually lives on low-lying islands in Hawaii and Japan. Its main nesting (筑巢的) area, Tern Island, is only 1.8 meters high and is being worn away by the sea. Therefore, about 40 young birds have been taken 800 kilometers away to Oahu. The biologist Eric Vander Werf notes that climate change is making such actions increasingly necessary. It is hoped that these birds can return to their original living places if the environment improves.
This new way of protecting animals is gaining wider acceptance. There are plans to update the Endangered Species Act, making it easier to move the most threatened species to new places. Because of this, officials and scientists have identified some animals and plants that might be moved, including Florida’s Key deer, Karner blue butterfly, as well as some desert plants and lizards.
However, not everyone supports this approach. Some lawmakers argue that introducing new species into different ecosystems (生态系统) can create new risks, such as threatening native species or damaging the local environment.
The biologist Jason McLachlan points out that this is a major change in our means of saving species. He also believes that as global warming forces animals to move at an alarming rate, the traditional idea of what is regarded as a native species is not as clear as it once was. In the past, climate changes happened so slowly over thousands of years that plants and animals could fully adapt to the new environment, but today such changes are happening much too quickly for most ecosystems.
31.Why were the Sooty storm-petrels moved to Oahu
A.To protect native species. B.To follow wildlife laws.
C.To escape rising sea levels. D.To return to original habitat.
32.What can we know about Florida’s Key deer
A.They are at great risk.
B.They are under good protection.
C.They have been officially moved.
D.They have been settled in new places.
33.What can we infer from Jason McLachlan’s words
A.Animals fail to move fast enough.
B.People value native species highly.
C.Assisted migration will be well accepted.
D.The definition of native species needs reconsidering.
34.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To discuss the risks of relocation. B.To describe dangers to wild animals.
C.To call for immediate climate action. D.To introduce a new protection method.
Picture this: you win three tickets to a sold-out concert and excitedly text your friends to see if they would like to join you. Their reply “Maybe.” Immediately, your excitement drops, for now you have to wait for their decisions before you can finalize your concert plans.
If you’ve experienced something like this, you’re not alone. The “maybe” response to invitations is a common upset in social life. So, what’s going on when people aren’t sure how to refuse an invitation What leads to this uncertain, awkward behavior
Researchers have found that people prefer saying “maybe” to saying “no” because of something called motivated reasoning (动机性推理), which happens when invitees view information in a biased way to serve their own interests. In other words, receivers of an invitation make themselves believe that inviters want to hear a “maybe” because it helps them keep their choices open. Also, people often imagine that saying “no” will ruin the relationship, completely ignoring the possibility that honesty might be appreciated.
However, there are situations where motivated reasoning fails, and people choose to say “no” directly. When invitees put themselves in the inviter’s shoes, they realize that a clear “no” is more helpful. Additionally, if the invitation holds no interest for them at all, they no longer feel the need to leave their options available.
While saying “no” can be uncomfortable, being direct and clear is always the best policy. It may limit your choices, but it saves the inviter from uncertainty and helps protect the relationship. Next time a hot concert comes along, your friends will be even more likely to think of you first!
35.Why does the author mention the concert story in Paragraph 1
A.To encourage quick replies. B.To reflect common feelings.
C.To introduce a social situation. D.To explain invitees’ motivation.
36.What does the underlined word “biased” mean in Paragraph 3
A.Positive B.Objective C.One-sided D.Reasonable
37.What makes invitees prefer a “no” in certain situations
A.Consideration for the inviter. B.Fear of ruining the relationship.
C.Uncertainty about the invitation. D.Wishes to keep their choices open.
38.What is the author’s attitude toward saying “maybe” to an invitation
A.Supportive. B.Unclear. C.Disapproving. D.Indifferent.

Beijing Opera is the most typical of all Chinese traditional dramatic art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from absorbing many other dramatic forms, mostly from the local drama “Huiban”, which was popular in South China during the 18th century. It is a scenic (舞台的) art including music, performance, literature, aria (唱腔) and face painting.
Theatrical art forms in many other countries do not present singing, dancing and spoken parts in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on stage; there are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play; in a dance drama, the dancer bas no speaking role and does not sing either. Traditional Chinese drama, including Beijing Opera, is a kind of entertainment which includes spoken parts, singing, dancing and acrobatics (杂技).
Besides its presence in China, Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous performers of all time, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will be puzzled (困惑的) all the way through and a little bored from time to time; but you will be charmed and interested. One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school
Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.
Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.
Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time
______— Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old!
48.While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should ______.

Starting from this term, our school requires all students to do morning exercise every day. At first, many students were not happy about it, because they had to get up earlier. But after a few weeks, we found that morning exercise is very important for us.
Every morning, we gather in the playground at 7:00. We do warm-up exercises first, then we run around the playground for 15 minutes. After that, we do some group exercises, like jumping jacks, sit-ups and squats. The whole process lasts for 30 minutes.
Doing morning exercise every day has many benefits. First, it makes us healthy and strong. It helps us keep fit and avoid getting sick easily. Second, it makes us energetic. After morning exercise, we feel more energetic in class and can listen to the teachers more carefully. Third, it helps us relax. Morning exercise is a good way to release pressure from study.

Growing up in Canada, Benjamin Gulak took part in science fairs from a young age. Drawing had also been a part of Gulak’s life, and he even did an abroad program of fine arts study in Italy during high school. Driven to try selling his art, he worked with some leading art galleries (画廊) in London and Miami. Over time, he began connecting artists he’d met on travels from developing markets like Cuba, Egypt, and Brazil to the gallery owners he knew.
“The results were amazing because these artists were used to selling their work to tourists for $50, and suddenly they’re hanging work in a high-end gallery and getting 5,000 pounds,” Gulak said. “It was the same artist but different buyers. Traditional galleries usually act as gatekeepers. Their picky selection (挑剔的选择) process is why many galleries usually show similar artists’ works. There are plenty of creative minds out there whose great art has never been seen outside of the local market.”
For a class project at college, Gulak built a system that tried to guess the types of art that would do well in a gallery. As a computer scientist, he later started NALA, which stands for Networked Artistic Learning Algorithm (算法). The company allows artists to upload works and choose their listing price. Gulak notes that not all art will sell. “If you’re making rock paintings, there may not be a big market,” he said. “Artists may price their work higher than buyers are willing to pay, but the algorithm works to put art in front of the possible buyers based on style preferences and price points.”
Gulak was once visiting Egypt when he discovered a beautiful painting on the street. Gulak found a local artist, Ahmed Nofal, and bought some works. Later, he brought Nofal to take part in World Art Dubai, an international art fair. The artist’s work was so well-received there. “When artists visit NALA, we discuss together, sharing ideas. These experiences also give me a unique view, pushing me to explore new partnerships and fresh projects,” Gulak said.

A.providing training in art marketing
B.setting higher prices for their works
