You could call Casey and Jason Lawrence Pied Pipers of gardening. Their biggest followers are their daughters Lana and Sayla. But they attract many more online via The Lawrence Garden Farm website, YouTube and Instagram. 1
“You feel the earth under your feet, hear the gentle breeze move softly through the tall flowers and grass, watch the insects jump and fly all around you, smell the sweet scent of flowers, and hear the sounds of everything wild,” Casey says. “ 2 It’s a connection that I can’t describe other than a strong feeling of love deep in my heart.”
3 She inherited (继承) it from her father, Wayne, who farmed land that’s been in the family since 1839. Casey grew up working in the fields with her three sisters. Now Wayne grows flowers, but Casey still helps out her parents and sisters at the family greenhouse business. And they’re all neighbors: each daughter built a home on the farm. 4 The garden’s open design includes front-yard plantings, fruit trees, wildflowers, low hills for privacy, a greenhouse, a composting (堆肥) area, and beds by Lana and Sayla’s play set.
Casey and Jason have guided their daughters to fall in love with gardening, hoping that they’ll carry it with them for the rest of their lives. “They don’t have to be gardeners, but as long as they know how, they will always have a special connection to something bigger,” Casey says. “ 5 There’s no email, social media, or drama. There is love, laughter, calm, peace, and connection with the earth and those you love.”
A.You enjoy nothing but the present.
B.Love of the soil is in Casey’s blood.
C.There is no need to make the garden perfect.
D.Casey’s patience made gardening meaningful.
E.Casey and Jason designed theirs for gardening.
F.You are surrounded by nothing other than nature.

How to Adapt to Senior One Life
Entering senior high school is a big change for many students. Senior one life is different from junior high school life. It is busier and more challenging. Here are some tips to help you adapt to senior one life quickly.
6 . Senior one has more subjects than junior high school. You need to arrange your time reasonably. Make a study plan every day and stick to it. This can help you make full use of your time and avoid falling behind.
7 . Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you have problems. Your teachers and classmates are always ready to help you. If you have difficulty in learning a subject, talk to your teacher. If you feel lonely, make friends with your classmates.
8 . Senior one is a new start. Don’t worry too much about your past grades. Focus on your present study and try your best to improve. Everyone has the chance to do well in senior high school.
9 . Taking part in after-school activities is a good way to adapt to senior one life. You can join the school club, play sports or take part in volunteer activities. This can help you make more friends and enrich your school life.

Just like the United States, Britain is divided into different areas. Britain is one of the most diverse nations in Europe with over 250 different languages being spoken in London alone. With such a various culture, adapting to it can be a challenge for anyone. 11
Forget the stereotypes (老套). Many of the long formed stereotypes simply have nothing to do with Britain today. Don’t think that everyone enjoys drinking tea or beer. Abandoning some old ideas of people and culture will allow you to be more open-minded and easily get into the culture.
12 Britain is made up of different regions that have their different traditions and languages. Understanding different cultures will help you avoid making mistakes.
Get used to small spaces. The US is a huge country where we are used to bigger cars, houses and spaces. Like all European nations, Britain does not have the luxury of space. Houses, apartments and cars are all smaller than you are used to. 13
14 Always apologize for knocking into someone, even if it was their fault. Respect people’s personal space and always wait in line. Bill Brysons’ book Notes from a Small Island is filled with many useful tips.
Accept the jokes. 15 Kidding, teasing, or “taking the mick” are all ways to describe making fun of someone but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Playing tricks on someone is a common way to show affection. As Britons usually put it, “You never make fun of someone you don’t like”.
A.Be polite.
B.Make friends with them.
C.Don’t play jokes on others.
D.Understand the differences.
E.Following these steps should be of great help to you.
F.One of the most confusing aspects of British culture is humour.
G.Therefore, trying to become familiar with smaller areas is very necessary.

In a troubled world, a clever spy races against time to discover a dangerous plot. 21 Recently, this type of TV drama has been more popular in Western countries. In January, the US spy drama The Night Agent Season 2 climbed to the top of Netflix’s charts.
22 The genre saw significant growth in the 20th century, when the two world wars, the Cold War and the rise of national intelligence agencies (情报机构) in the UK and US provided a wealth of inspiration.
But why is the genre experiencing a comeback today 23 In 2024, 79 percent of British people surveyed by the UK’s National Center for Social Research said their country’s governance system could be improved “a great deal”. 24 According to Joseph Oldham, a university lecturer, spy fiction has typically featured agents working for the government, but in recent shows such as Black Doves, they are employed by private intelligence services. “This seems to speak to the sense that governments seem increasingly ineffective in the face of these capitalist (资本主义的) concerns,” Oldham added.
From a psychological point of view, people are attracted to these shows because of the comfort they offer. 25 “Spy dramas appeal because of the pleasure of following the hero’s journey, but one important element is how they fulfill our strong desire to resolve ambiguity (模糊) and uncertainty.” UK psychologist Justin Spray told the BBC.
A.This is the typical story of a spy drama.
B.Spy thrillers enable the audience to find solutions to life difficulties.
C.The government’s inefficiency is also mirrored in our expectations of spies.
D.Spy dramas simplify complex global politics into a clear “good versus bad” for viewers.
E.This distrust in government is also reflected in the changing nature of the spies themselves.
F.Of course, the appeal of spy dramas is nothing new, thanks in part to the rich history of spy novels.
G.Experts believe that spy dramas connect with audiences because they reflect the world we live in.
As the world puts increased pressure on kids to be winners, parents tend to make it their mission (使命) to help their kids succeed in every possible way. But now there’s a growing realization among teachers and other experts who work with children that kids increasingly need help in learning how to fail. So how do parents teach kids to fail The following steps may be of help.
Show your understanding
Understand your child when he’s disappointed and frustrated. Don’t just say, “It’s okay. You’ll do better next time.” It’s useless to brush off a child’s feelings of frustration (沮丧) and disappointment. 26 For example, “I see you’re really disappointed, and I know you really wanted to do better.”
Make yourself a model
It’s wise for you to first explain that failure is a part of life and you can share examples of failures “you’ve ever had”, such as losing out on a promotion at work or failing to finish an important task. 27
Make it a teachable moment
28 You and your child can try to come up with what he can do next time for a better chance at success. For instance, can he study differently or talk to the teacher about the problem Can he change something in the future It’s all about problem-solving.
29
It can be very tough to watch your child fall down, but he can only learn how to handle disappointment through trial and error. As books like The Blessings of a Skinned Knee and the newly released How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go underline, parents must stop lending a helping hand. 30 Learning to fail can be painful. But kids will only succeed if they can acquire the skills to handle whatever life throws on their way.
A.Step back and allow kids to fail.
B.Watch your child fall and give a hand.
C.A child’s failure is a chance for parents to teach problem-solving skills.
D.Afterwards, you can model how to handle the disappointment in your life.
E.Instead, you need to change the language to show your true understanding.
F.They must learn to handle their own disappointment through trial and error.
G.Otherwise, you rob (抢走) children of the very experiences that require problem-solving.
Nature comforts our stressed-out souls. We know that nature is the best prescription, and new research suggests we can gain benefits while visiting parks. 31 The study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research found that spending 20 minutes in a city park can make you happier, regardless of whether you use that time to exercise or not.
“In general, we found park visitors reported an improvement in emotional well-being after the park visit,” the study’s lead author, Professor Hon K. Yuen at the University of Alabama at Birmingham said in a statement. “ 32 Instead, we found time spent in the park is related to improved emotional well-being.”
For the study, 94 adults visited three city parks in Mountain Brook, Alabama. 33 They also completed a questionnaire about their subjective well-being before and after their visit. A visit of between 20 and 25 minutes showed the best results, with a roughly 64% increase in the participants’ self-reported well-being, even if they didn’t move a great deal in the park. 34
The study group was truly small, as the study’s co-author and another UAB professor, Gavin Jenkins, acknowledged. 35 The challenge facing cities is that there is increasing evidence about the value of city parks but we continue to see the decrease of these spaces.
A.The length of their physical activity was tracked.
B.You usually visit a small green space in your neighborhood.
C.However, its findings pointed out the importance of city parks.
D.If you want to feel happier, you just need to exercise for 20 minutes in a park.
E.The best part of it is that you needn’t visit a national park or go far out of your way.
F.This means people can benefit from visiting a nearby park, regardless of physical ability.
G.But we didn’t find levels of physical activity are linked to improved emotional well-being.
Recently, ChatGPT is an exciting new AI technology that has the potential to revolutionize (使变革) the way humans interact with machines. 36 ChatGPT can be a beneficial tool for everyone, especially for many students in the following ways.
Concisely rephrase (改述) lengthy articles and essays to make them easier to read. Students are frequently unable to dive deeply into concepts, essays, or articles to build full understanding in academic settings due to academic pressure and demanding and busy study schedules, especially with deadlines for reading long publications. 37 Students can use ChatGPT to summarize articles, research papers, and even essays to get the main ideas of the material in a brief summary.
38 To support students effectively, ChatGPT can be of great help because it generalizes the notes in accordance with the word limit students demand in a clear and brief manner. Studying and getting ready for exams and tests can be quite helpful. The class notes can be organized in a typed manner with only a few quick prompts (提示词) , putting all the materials in one place. Students can employ straightforward prompts that list the sources that need to be compiled (编纂) into the summary as well as the maximum length allowed.
Organize, create, and send emails. Students may frequently write emails, applications, or formal letters of communication to their teachers, or peers. In particular, if they have a busy academic schedule, writing such formal papers can be very time-consuming and laborious. Then ChatGPT helps. 39 Just entering the objective, and specifying the tone students want, ChatGPT may generate a grammatically correct and formal email in a matter of seconds.
Time management and academic organization. Aside from those to help with actual academic tasks, ChatGPT can also help students with organizing and categorizing their academic work in general. And they can use this tool more efficiently to get general guidance and recommendations on how to handle academics, such as how to organize an assignment, how to balance academic work with other interests, and so on. 40
A.Summarize the class notes.
B.Come up with artistic composition ideas.
C.And it could create more powerful and useful AI applications.
D.It may greatly simplify your life by writing emails or applications precisely and logically.
E.In these cases, it might be useful in giving you a broad overview of an essay or article.
F.So ChatGPT can be used as a tool of assistance in an almost unlimited number of ways.
G.More importantly, it relies on human feedback to improve its accuracy.
Every time you are online, you are surrounded by pictures, articles, links and videos trying to tell their story. Unfortunately, not all these stories are true, and some of them are fake news. Experts in media studies and online psychology have been examining the fake news phenomenon. Read these tips and don’t get fooled.
Check the source
Look at the website where the story comes from. Does it look real Is the text well written 41 Fake news websites often use addresses that sound like real newspapers but don’t have any real stories about other topics. If you aren’t sure, click on the “About” page and look for a clear description of the organization.
42
Many fake news stories use images that are photoshopped or taken from an unrelated site. Sometimes, if you just look closely at the image, you can see if it has been changed. Or use a tool to search the image on the Internet. It will show you if the image has been used in other contexts.
Check the story in other places
43 If you do find it on many other sites, then it probably isn’t fake, as many big news organizations try to check their sources before they publish a story.
Look for other signs
There are other techniques that fake news uses. These include use ALL CAPs (大写字母) and lots of ads that pop up when you click on the link. 44 If the new story makes you angry, it’s probably designed to make you angry.
If you know these things about online news and can apply them in your everyday life, then you have control over what to read, what to believe and most importantly, what to share. 45
A.Watch out for fake photos
B.Watch for emotional language
C.Also think about how the story makes you feel.
D.Are there a variety of other stories or is it just one story
E.Look to see if the story you are reading is on other news sites that you know or trust.
F.If you find a story that you know is fake, the most important advice is: don’t share it.
G.Sometimes they want you to click on another story or advertisement on their own site.

Celebrate!
Different countries have different celebrations on many special days. Let’s have a look at some from a website.
Noodles
In China, people often celebrate birthdays by eating with family or friends, and the last dish of the meal is always noodles. The noodles are long and thin. 51 You can’t cut them. In Chinese culture, long noodles mean you will have a long life.
Business birthdays
A business birthday shows that a company is successful. Many businesses in the USA celebrate important birthdays, like 10, 50 or 150 years. 52 Sometimes they make TV advertisements. It is a good chance to advertise the business.
Name days
As well as a birthday, many people in Southern Europe also celebrate their name day. 53 People have big parties and open their houses to anybody who wants to come. People bring small gifts, often flowers or a box of sweets.
Islamic New Year
In Muslim countries across the world, people celebrate Eid (开斋节). Eid means festival or celebration. During Eid, people visit family and friends, as well as people who are sick or in hospital. 54 Children receive toys, too. Children often wear special traditional clothes during the Eid celebrations.

Long, long ago people couldn’t write and they had no books. But they had stories. People learned the stories by heart and taught new ones to one another. Sometimes it was hard to remember them all. 56
The ancient Egyptians wrote their stories on something made from papyrus (纸莎草) plants. People in other places learned to use papyrus from the Egyptians. 57 So parchment (羊皮纸), made from goatskin, later took its place.
In ancient China books looked a little different. At that time, people there used ink to write on bamboo or silk. And then they invented paper. Made of trees, paper was easier and cheaper to make than papyrus or parchment. 58 Paper-making later spread to the West, but there was a big problem with these early books. Every single one had to be copied and written by hand.
59 They carved (雕刻) a page of words into a piece of wood or stone. They could then print the page by spreading ink on the wood or stone and putting it against paper. But it wasn’t until a German printer invented movable, metal letters that books became fast and easy to make. The letters could be used to print copy after copy, and the letters put together again and again to print different pages of words.
60 Once a luxury only the rich could buy, they soon became a treasure everyone could enjoy.
A.But papyrus grew mainly in Egypt.
B.It took years to finish making just one book.
C.Finally books could be printed by the thousands.

The days are getting longer — but very, very slowly New calculations (计算) showed a day on the Earth was a full five hours and 15 minutes longer than that of about a billion years ago. 61
In modern times, a day is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. 62 The length of days has slowly grown over 1.4 billion years. That trend is expected to continue. Scientists think it will continue for millions of years more.
Scientists used many tools to find out about the Earth’s longer days. They used an astronomical theory (天文学理论), which involves (包含) using physics and chemistry to describe objects in space. They also used geochemical signatures (地球化学特征) in ancient rocks. The ancient rocks showed that a day on the Earth was 18 hours and 41 minutes long 1.4 billion years ago.
Studying the ancient rocks helped the scientists learn more about the Earth. They learned that the days on the Earth are getting longer. 63
As the Earth’s rotation (旋转) gradually slows down, the moon moves further away. 64 Over the past 1.4 billion years the moon has moved away very slowly about 44,000 kilometers from the Earth. The moon is now at a distance of 384,400 kilometers away from the Earth.
65 At some point in the far future, it will reach a stable (稳定的) distance when it will be seen only from one half of the Earth, and never seen from the other.
A.Fortunately, it will not leave us though it will be really farther.
B.Scientists calculated how far away the moon is from the Earth now.

Get chores (琐事) and tasks out of the way.
Holidays are a good time to finish things you’ve not finished for a while. If you have no other things with family or friends to do, consider spending your time to finish tasks that you haven’t done for a long time. 69 Other good ideas include cleaning your clothes, sorting out your bookshelf, and washing your car.
Make new friends.
If you don’t have anyone to go out with, don’t worry You can meet new people at clubs or concerts. Don’t be shy to talk to others. Don’t be afraid to approach (接近) and talk to people you meet. 70

True Beauty Comes from Within
In today’s world, we see many pictures of “perfect” people. This can make young people feel bad about their own appearance. Some try to look like these pictures by going on strict diets or buying expensive products.
71 True beauty is not about being very thin or having a perfect face. It is about who you are inside and how you care for yourself. Then what on earth should you do to have true beauty and feel good about yourself
72 This means being kind and respectful to your own body. When you thank your body for what it can do, instead of always finding faults, you start to like yourself more. This fondness of yourself will definitely make you shine and more attractive.
Living a healthy life is also a big part of true beauty. 73 Try to eat enough fruits and vegetables, and find a physical activity that you really like, such as walking or playing ball. The aim is to feel strong and full of energy, not to make yourself suffer. A healthy body helps you have a happy mind, making you feel good from the inside.
Besides those aspects, actually, beauty mostly comes from your heart. 74 When you help someone carry heavy books, listen to a friend with patience, or share your things with others, you must be extremely charming. 75 When you try to be a good person, you will stop looking at others and wishing to be like them. This lets your own special light shine, making you a truly beautiful person in the eyes of others.
A.The inner beauty is shown in how you treat people.
B.But real beauty is much more than what you look like.
C.You can start with small action on your diet and exercises.
D.You should first learn to accept and take good care of your body.
E.It is important to know that everyone is beautiful in his own way.
F.Building inner beauty takes time, but it makes you a better person.
G.These good actions help you build a strong connection with people.

可知,此空应强调制定计划时要保持合理性,E选项“Remember to keep it reasonable, though (不过,要记住保持计划的合理性)”中的it指代前文的a proper plan,且衔接前后文逻辑,符合语境。故选E项。
根据空后“Eating a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients (营养素) can help fuel your training sessions and in turn help you get better at your sport. Foods that have moderate amounts of fat and are high in complex and simple carbohydrates (碳水化合物) are good choices. (摄入富含维生素和营养素的饮食有助于为你的训练提供能量,进而帮助你提升运动水平。含有适量脂肪且富含复合和简单碳水化合物的食物是不错的选择。)”可知,本段围绕合理饮食对运动的作用展开,B选项“Fuel with proper nutrition (用合理的营养为身体供能)”能准确概括本段主题,符合语境。故选B项。

51.根据上文“In China, people often celebrate birthdays by eating with family or friends, and the last dish of the meal is always noodles. The noodles are long and thin.(在中国,人们通常会和家人或朋友一起吃饭庆祝生日,而这顿饭的最后一道菜总是面条。这种面条又长又细。)”和下文“You can’t cut them. In Chinese culture, long noodles mean you will have a long life.(你不能切断它们。在中国文化中,长面条寓意着长寿。)”可知,上文提到中国人生日宴的最后一道菜是又长又细的面条,下文明确说你不能切断它们,且补充了“长面条意味着长寿”的文化内涵。选项A“你必须把面条整根吃完。”承接了“不能切断”的要求,同时呼应“长面条”的形态和“长寿”的寓意,是上下文的自然衔接。故选A。
52.根据上文“Many businesses in the USA celebrate important birthdays, like 10, 50 or 150 years.(美国的许多企业都会庆祝重要的生日,比如10年、50年或150年。)”和下文“Sometimes they make TV advertisements.(有时他们会制作电视广告。)” 选项C“公司举办聚会并发送贺卡”符合语境,选项C中的“Companies”与上文提到的“Many businesses”相呼应,且选项C中的“hold parties and send cards”与下文提到的“make TV advertisements”并列,都是公司庆祝重要生日的方式。故选C。
53.根据上文“As well as a birthday, many people in Southern Europe also celebrate their name day.(除了生日,南欧的许多人还庆祝他们的命名日。)”和下文“People have big parties and open their houses to anybody who wants to come.(人们举办大型聚会,并向任何想来的人开放他们的房子。)”
54.根据上文“During Eid, people visit family and friends, as well as people who are sick or in hospital.(在开斋节期间,人们会拜访家人和朋友,以及生病或住院的人。)” 选项D“他们送礼物,比如糖果和食物”符合语境,选项D中的“They give presents”与上文提到的“people visit family and friends”相呼应,且选项D中的“such as sweets and food”与下文提到的“Children receive toys”并列,都是开斋节期间人们互赠的礼物。

56.上文“Long, long ago people couldn’t write and they had no books. But they had stories. People learned the stories by heart and taught new ones to one another. Sometimes it was hard to remember them all. (很久很久以前,人们不会写字,也没有书。但他们有故事。人们用心记住故事并互相教授新的。有时很难记住所有的故事)”描述了文字发明前,人们依靠记忆和口述传承故事的困难。D选项“Things grew a little easier when writing was invented. (当文字被发明时,情况变得稍微容易了一些)”承接上文,明确指出“文字的发明”是解决上述困难的关键转折点。下文开始讲述古埃及人在“纸莎草”上书写故事,正是对“writing was invented”之后情况的具体展开。D选项起到了从“史前”过渡到“有文字记录历史”的作用。故选D项。
57.上文“People in other places learned to use papyrus from the Egyptians. (其他地方的人们向埃及人学会了使用纸莎草纸)”指出纸莎草纸的使用传播到了埃及以外的地区。A选项“But papyrus grew mainly in Egypt. (但是纸莎草主要生长在埃及)”与上文构成转折关系,指出了纸莎草纸推广面临的一个根本性限制:其原材料(纸莎草)的地域局限性。下文“So parchment (羊皮纸), made from goatskin, later took its place. (所以,用山羊皮制成的羊皮纸后来取代了它)”则顺理成章地说明了由于纸莎草原材料短缺(主要在埃及),人们找到了替代品——羊皮纸。A选项解释了为何需要寻找“parchment”这一替代品,是逻辑链条中的关键一环。故选A项。
58.上文“Made of trees, paper was easier and cheaper to make than papyrus or parchment. (由树木制成,纸比纸莎草纸或羊皮纸更容易且更便宜制造)”介绍了纸相对于前两种材料的优点(易得、便宜)。E选项“Its surface was smoother and better for writing on too. (它的表面也更光滑,更适合书写)”通过“too (也)”这个递进词,进一步补充了纸的另一个优点——书写体验更好。这里的“Its surface”指代的就是上文提到的“paper (纸)”的表面。该选项使对纸的优点描述更加全面。下文“Paper-making later spread to the West, but there was a big problem with these early books. (造纸术后来传播到西方,但这些早期书籍有一个大问题)”则转向讨论纸普及后书籍制作的另一个瓶颈,E选项的补充与下文形成顺畅的语义衔接。故选E项。
59.下文“They carved (雕刻) a page of words into a piece of wood or stone. They could then print the page by spreading ink on the wood or stone and putting it against paper. (他们将一页文字雕刻在一块木头或石头上。然后他们可以
