Address: 2 Rue Louis Boilly, 75016 Paris, France
Monet painted this impressive sunrise landscape in 1872, showing the port at his home city of Le Havre in Northern France. It’s famous for having inspired the term “Impressionism”, since Monet presented it for the first time at the 1874 Paris show now called the “Exhibition of the Impressionists”.

Some environmentalists claim that attempts to create a recycling economy for plastics are sure to fail, but the arguments can be not true.
In 1980, Disney World in Orlando. Florida, started to work on a new way to generate power for the theme park, cutting its use of oil, the price of which had increased. The Solid Waste Energy Conversion Plant took rubbish, including plastic, and used a method called pyrolysis (热解) to turn it into burnable gases. It opened in 1982, but closed a year later, as the cost of running it went up.
Today, environmentalists are mentioning the Disney story to damage the reputation of a set of new technologies, well known as advanced recycling, which take plastic waste and turn it back into brand new plastic.
Their argument is false. The failure of Disney’s plant had more to do with a later fall in oil prices than technological or environmental problems. Pyrolysis has improved a lot since the 1980s. And in any case, Disney’s plant was designed to produce fuel, which isn’t classed as advanced recycling.
As we report “the incredible new tech that can recycle all plastics forever”, advanced recycling is a game changer that could help to solve the global plastics crisis. It has the possibility to take millions of tonnes of thrown-away plastic, most of which ends up in landfill or the environment, and turn it back into a clean, fresh version by breaking it down to its molecular constituents (分子成分). The goal is a recycling economy. In this case, there is no longer any need to make “virgin” plastic from oil.
It isn’t a magic recipe. There are problems around such plants generating toxic (有毒的) waste, their energy use and the continuation of traditional plastics ahead of newer, greener alternatives (替代物). Environmentalists are right to argue that we would be better off gradually getting rid of plastics altogether. But practical considerations mean they aren’t going away any time soon, and most advanced recycling technologies are better for the environment than the alternatives.
There is a serious discussion to be had around advanced recycling, not least whether it should be factored into an upcoming global agreement on plastic pollution. Let’s just make sure it is based on the facts, not Disney stories.
16.As for refusing the new tech with the Disney story, the author is .
A.worried B.disapproving
C.uncertain D.unconcerned
17.What can we learn from this passage
A.Plastics would be soon stopped using.
B.Plants with new tech don’t produce toxic waste.
C.The new tech features recycling all plastics.
D.Disney’s plant turned plastic waste into new plastic.
18.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To argue for advanced recycling.
B.To stress benefits of reducing plastics.
C.To present failure of recycling economy.
D.To discuss the problems of reusing waste.

Each September, freshmen at Shaoxing University (USX) are invited by blue-vested students to join a long-standing volunteer tutoring program. For nearly 30 years, the program has provided free academic support to disadvantaged children, especially those with disabilities.
Launched by the university’s Youth Volunteer Association, the program aims to let students “give back to society through knowledge.” It has partnered with local public service teams and the disabled persons' federation, benefiting over 200 families and more than 700 children with nearly 1,500 volunteers contributing 27,000 service hours.
Volunteers come from various majors. Early childhood education major Wang Sihan tutors a girl with language delays, impressed by the child’s discipline and unique potential. Clinical medicine student Tian Xiangmei, selected for her patience, uses simple drawings to teach math to a cognitively challenged girl, as she understands the child’s situation as a former left-behind child. English education major Yang Xi applies classroom knowledge, making personalized flashcards and using praise to encourage her student, traveling 11 kilometers weekly for tutoring.
The program also fosters volunteers’ growth. Junior Yu Lingfei has become the program leader, with volunteers recording teaching experiences in a shared manual to help newcomers. Adapting to societal changes, the program now emphasizes mental health training. Volunteers also create a “heartfelt moments capsule” to record precious experiences, which are turned into gifts for children.

Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).
“Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body is held up, everything is held up and I’ve made it to 104.”
She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade (刀锋式跑步义肢). Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continue.
Altogether, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4, 385 kilometers. During that time, she has had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing...This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s taught me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”

2024 marks an exciting year for space exploration, with NASA’s Europa Clipper mission leading the way. This spacecraft, launched in October 2024, is set to completely change our understanding of Jupiter’s moon Europa — one of the most promising places to search for alien life in our solar system.
Europa, covered in a thick layer of ice, is believed to hide a vast subsurface ocean (a liquid water layer beneath its icy surface) larger than Earth’s oceans combined. Scientists think this ocean could have the right conditions for life: water, energy (from tidal forces), and maybe even organic molecules (the building blocks of life).
The Europa Clipper carries advanced tools to study Europa’s ice and ocean. One key instrument is a radar that can “see” through the ice, mapping the thickness of the frozen layer and detecting cracks where water might erupt onto the surface. Another tool will analyze gases and particles released during these “cryovolcanic” eruptions (eruptions of water, not lava) to check for organic compounds. Early data from the mission already suggests that Europa’s ice may have “chaos regions” — areas where the ice is cracked and mixed with liquid water — making it easier for organic materials to rise to the surface.
While no direct evidence of life has been found yet, the Europa Clipper is laying the groundwork for future missions. If organic molecules are confirmed, it could mean Europa’s ocean is a habitable world — even if we don’t find actual life there, it would be a major step toward answering the question: “Are we alone in the universe ”

It is no surprise that the English language contains such a wide variety of expressions and phrases including dogs, which have been constant partners with people for thousands of years. The observations of dog behaviors have inspired us to take their individual characteristics into our language.
Did your roommates make a terrible mess of the dorm room while you were gone You could describe this terrible state as “a dog’s breakfast”. This British phrase means a disorganized state of things or a bad mix of different things. It appeared during a time when people would feed their dogs leftovers from last night’s dinner or other food items they happened to have on hand for breakfast. The phrase creates such a powerful scene showing a complete mess if you truly picture it. Interestingly, the phrase “dressed like a dog’s dinner” is quite different — “someone who is overdressed or improperly dressed”.
You would be “barking up the wrong tree” if you are following a mistaken or misguided thought or action. This term dates back to the hunt of raccoon (浣熊) with the help of dogs. From time to time, a raccoon fools the dogs, which crowd around a tree, barking loudly, not realizing the quarry has taken a different way.
Many people even describe the weather by using the image of dogs. The “dog days”, dating back to ancient Rome, refers to the hottest days of the year in which we feel lazy or unable to make great efforts. It was the Romans who first noticed that the burning heat of the summer seemed to come with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star”, which was a part of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座). But even the coldest nights have interesting idioms (习惯用语) and history with them. One Australian idiom describes the practice of sleeping alongside a dog for warmth during cold evenings — a very cold night might need more than one dog, so it is a “three-dog night”.
While dog-related idioms are common in use in many people’s everyday language today, the stories and history behind the idioms may lead us onto a new exciting journey of exploration.

Sandesh Kadur, a National Geographic explorer, has spent 25 years documenting (记录) rare wildlife, changing his childhood interest into a duty to protect Earth’s ecosystems.
When he was young, Kadur was attracted by Corbett’s tales of big cats. Inspired, he once cycled into the jungle with a friend to observe big cats at a watering hole. At night, they really saw a big cat. Bathed in moonlight, he realized his life’s goal: to take photos of nature’s wonders and share them.
At 12, Kadur borrowed his father’s camera — a “magic box” that froze time. His father, a scientist who studies insects, got him looking at the small things. So he began intentionally taking photos of small insects, trying to understand what he was looking at. As he grew older, his love for nature, however, conflicted with academics. Afterwards, he moved to Brownsville, Texas to study hotel management — a choice that unexpectedly refueled his love for storytelling.
In Brownsville, Kadur explored the cloud forests and landed a job as a jungle tour guide. There, he met filmmaker John Bax, who introduced him to documentary work. When they started a documentary project together, Bax withdrew (退出) from it. Kadur, then 19 and untrained in film, carried on the project on his own. He later spent three years in India’s Western Ghats, filming species like the “smoke cat” for the first time. His first film, Sahyadris: Mountains of the Monsoon, brought the Western Ghats’ biodiversity into attention, aiding its 2012 UNESCO World Heritage status.
Through visual storytelling, Kadur offers his audience chances to know about a rarely-seen natural world, calling on them to protect its weak wildlife. “Visual art has told stories for thousands of years. Now we’re doing that with technology, and it will continue to advance.” said Kadur, “I think the influence of storytelling can last a lifetime. It can last generations.”
53.What led Kadur into nature
A.Corbett’s stories of big cats. B.Working as a jungle tour guide.

A.It well entertains audiences. B.It serves as a bridge for nature.
C.Its value lies in expression skills. D.Its impact depends on technology.
56.Which of the following words can best describe Kadur
A.Determined and passionate. B.Talented and humorous.
C.Independent and generous. D.Responsible and serious.
The African Children’s Choir (合唱团) is made up of children who are 7 to 10 years old from Africa. They have incredible voices and spirit that amaze the audience everywhere they go!
And they go to a lot of places, all around the world. And not only do they travel a lot, but they perform with some superstar singers and celebrities for heads of state. But this is not what makes the choir so special.
Like New York’s PS22, they do not just sing, but truly put their hearts, souls and bodies into their words. But what is unique about the choir is that it offers hope, education and confidence to children who live in extreme poverty. For example, the kids in the choir are mostly from the poorest countries in the world. Many children live in one-room homes and walk more than 2 miles to get water for their family. Most of the children have lost one or both of their parents because of wars or diseases.
Through its music and education, the African Children’s Choir changes the lives of its children. It allows them to see the world. It gives them hope and confidence. It shows them that everything is possible. The choir even pays for their education through college. In 30 years, it has educated and changed the lives of over 50, 000 children. And, in turn, the children return to their hometowns with new thoughts and new skills to help improve their family and community. These children are truly helping to build a better Africa.
57.What is special about the choir
A.Its positive influence on poor children.
B.Performing together with famous people.
C.Its members truly putting their hearts into words.
D.Its members focusing on singing beautiful songs.

In many cities, shared bikes have transformed how people travel short distances. They are convenient, affordable, and eco-friendly. Yet in recent years, studies have shown that not only has the utilization rate of each bike dropped, but complaints about blocked walkways have also risen sharply. Walkways have become piled with abandoned and broken bikes. Residents in some neighborhoods say bike piles make it hard for parents with strollers or older people to move around safely.
The rise and fall of bike-sharing enthusiasm is not without precedent (先例) . In the early days, bright-colored bikes appeared everywhere, and ridership rose sharply. However, without proper regulations, many companies flooded the streets with more bikes than they could panies like Ofo poured far more bikes onto the streets than they can maintain. Many sat unrepaired for months, turning walkways into messy storage yards. By 2018, the company was in financial trouble, leaving hundreds of thousands of abandoned bikes to rust (生锈) in public spaces.
Some countries have taken action to address the situation. For example, Singapore established designated (指定的) bike parking zones and fines for improper parking. The Paris city government began introducing a licensing system for bike-sharing operators in 2018 to regulate the number of operators and control their fleets. However, in April 2023, Paris residents voted against renewing the operator’s licenses, resulting in an interruption of bike-sharing services in the city.
Despite challenges, bike-sharing remains popular, and cities are experimenting with solutions, trying to balance convenience, safety, and public space. While some residents complain about abandoned bikes, others value the flexibility these services provide. Urban planners should recognize that success depends on the responsibility of both providers and riders. The key may lie not in abandoning shared bikes, but in thoughtful planning, responsible use, and cooperation between operators, governments, and citizens. How they adapt together will determine whether bike-sharing becomes a sustainable urban asset or an ongoing problem.
61.What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph
A.Many shared bikes are of poor quality
B.Residents have a high demand for shared bikes
C.Shared bikes have created urban inconveniences
D.Shared bikes pose safety risks to children and the elderly

A.The high cost of bike-sharing services.
B.The poor management of shared bikes.
C.The environmental impact of abandoned bikes.
D.The financial trouble of bike-sharing companies.
63.What can we learn about Paris’ bike-sharing licensing policy from paragraph 3
A.It failed to gain public support. B.It proved to be highly effective.
C.It was widely accepted by operators. D.It significantly worsened urban traffic.
64.Which statement will the author probably agree with
A.Strict regulations are key to sustainable urban services.
