How to Survive a High-Rise Fire
Saving trapped people on upper floors in high-rise buildings is a challenge for the fire department as fire truck ladders only reach a maximum of 33m. If trapped, you need to wait a while for rescue. 1
An unexpected fire alarm will be scary, but panicking won’t help. Stay calm, and try to figure out where the fire happen. 2 If it is cool, you should be able to leave for the nearest exit. Be sure to close all the doors behind you, so you don’t give the fire more oxygen to keep burning.
3 Smoke inhalation (吸入) is the leading cause of death in fires. If you have to pass through smoke, make sure you crawl (匍匐前行) your way on all fours and cover your mouth and nose with your shirt to help filter (过滤) out the smoke as you breathe.
If it’s too dangerous to leave your apartment, you’re still going to need to protect yourself against smoke coming in. Get to an area where you can close the door. 4
Once you’ve done that, you should call the fire department, and report your exact location in the building. 5 But don’t break it, and don’t jump. You’ll likely have better chances of survival waiting calmly inside for help to arrive.
A.Then feel the door to your unit.
B.You can open the window wide and ask for help.
C.Run as fast as possible while passing through smoke.
D.Try to avoid breathing in smoke as much as possible.
E.And what you do during that time can be truly life-or-death.
F.And place wet towels or cloths under doors to help keep the smoke out.
G.You can also signal by hanging a light-colored cloth out of your window.
The belief in talking to plants has existed for centuries. Ancient civilizations, such as the Greeks and local cultures, believed plants responded to energy, emotion, and sound. In the 1840s, German professor Gustav Fechner suggested plants might have feelings. 6
Technically, plants don’t have ears or a nervous system, so they don’t “hear” in the traditional sense. However, studies have shown plants can detect vibrations (振动) in their environment — including sound waves produced by human speech or music. 7 For instance, South Korean researchers found certain plant genes (基因) responded positively to classical music and human voice frequencies.
Some studies suggest that plants respond more favorably to female voices than male voices due to differences in pitch (音高) and frequency. Music types like classical or jazz have shown positive results, while loud rock music may stress plants. Ultimately, regularity and loudness may influence the result. 8
9 However, there are enough facts to suggest that plants are sensitive to their environments — including sound. Whether it’s the vibration from your voice or the regular care that comes from daily contact, your plants just might benefit.
Talking to plants may not be magic, but it does encourage a deeper connection with nature, mindful gardening, and perhaps even a little extra vibrational help. 10 Either way, your plant may thank you in its own green way. So go ahead — speak softly some words of encouragement to your favorite leafy green plant.
A.Genes play an important role in plants’ growth.
B.Nobody has observed plants react to external factors.
C.You might rely on science or just care for plants well.
D.We haven’t proven talking to plants directly speeds growth.
E.They can detect and respond to sounds like speech or music.
F.Gentle and calm sounds seem to create vibrations that are more beneficial for plants.
G.That laid the basis for the idea of a psychological connection between humans and nature.
How to Build Strong Friendships
Friendship is one of life’s greatest joys. However, building and maintaining strong friendships takes effort and understanding. Here are some tips to help you develop meaningful connections.
First, be a good listener. When your friend is talking, give them your full attention. 11 Show that you care about their feelings and experiences.
Second, be honest and trustworthy. Keep your promises and don’t share their secrets with others. 12 Trust is the foundation of any strong relationship.
Third, support your friends in good times and bad. Celebrate their successes and offer comfort when they face challenges. 13 Your presence can make a big difference.
Fourth, learn to forgive. No one is perfect, and misunderstandings can happen. 14 Letting go of small disagreements can strengthen your bond.
Finally, spend quality time together. Whether it’s studying, exercising, or just chatting, shared experiences create lasting memories. 15 Remember, true friendship is not about quantity but quality.
A.Avoid judging them quickly.
B.Instead, focus on having fun together.
C.This will show that you are a reliable person.
D.Sometimes just being there is enough.
E.Try to see things from their point of view.
F.Apologize when you are wrong and accept their apologies too.
G.Don’t let busy schedules prevent you from staying connected.
When you start to feel tired, that’s usually the signal to go to bed and get some shut-eye. Sometimes, however, you have to stay awake, whether it’s for a late-night shift at work, or an early-morning class. Your first thought might be to reach for a cup of coffee, but that does not always work for everyone. 16 .
● Wake Up Your Senses
There are a number of things you can do to make sure your eyes, ears, and even your nose are active. 17 . Turn on as many lights as you can. If you can’t control the lights, then place yourself as close to a light source as possible. Besides, if you’re in a place where you can listen to music, listen to jazz, hip-hop, rock, anything that makes you feel active. To keep your nose awake too, try smelling something strong and fresh, like mint or lemon.
● Keep exercising
18 . You don’t have to run a marathon to be active. Just a little bit of physical activity can get your body awake. There are ways to get more active even if you’re at school or work, and just a few minutes of exercise can have a great effect on how awake your body is. Take the opportunity to walk whenever you can. While you may not be able to exercise right then and there, make a habit of exercising regularly, for at least thirty minutes a day.
● 19
Eat eggs, turkey, and a little bit of light toast, or try some cooked oats and yogurt in the morning. Add greens if possible. If you don’t feel right about eating so many vegetables, make a drink with fruits and yogurt, and pick it up on your way to school or work. Eating the right foods can help increase your energy level, make you more awake and focused, and give you some energy to keep you going for a few hours.
● Take a power nap
If you’re at home or at work, taking the time to take a quick power nap for 5-20 minutes can help you give your system the energy that it needs to keep going. 20 . To make the power nap more effective, try finding a comfortable place with nobody around. When you wake up, take a deep breath, and have a glass of water and some tea to feel more energetic.
A.Save time on breakfast
B.Have a healthy breakfast
C.Sleeping for longer than that will make you more tired
D.The longer you sleep, the more powerful you will become
E.Luckily, there are other ways to keep yourself awake when tired
F.The more parts of your body get awake, the less likely you will fall asleep
G.A quick workout is a way of telling your body that it’s not time to go to bed yet
Why Boundaries at Work Are Essential
What is a boundary, you ask A boundary is a limit defining you in relation to someone or something. 21 If you have informed someone that this is your office space, your desk, or your chair, you have attempted to set physical boundaries.
Letting co-workers know you are not comfortable shaking their hands or hugging them at a holiday party, especially with Covid at this time, is another example of setting a physical boundary. It is often easier to understand a physical boundary. Emotional or mental boundaries may be subtler (更微妙的). 22
Emotional boundaries are related to our feelings and how something or someone’s behavior affects us. For example, if a boss treats you disrespectfully by yelling at you or a colleague frequently interrupts you in meetings, you are likely to feel hurt, embarrassed, and perhaps angry. Understandably, by having a courageous conversation with both your boss and co-worker about their behavior, the impact it has on you, and your expectations regarding future behavior, you are setting healthy emotional boundaries for yourself at work.
Sometimes we set a boundary that is a combination of both a physical and emotional one. 23 One example of this is being repeatedly asked to work late during the week/weekends or while on vacation. Another example is being required to see too many clients or patients to the point we feel tired at the end of the day and exhausted by Friday. Often, the above workplace demands lead to increased stress and a high potential for burnout (倦怠) over time.
Mental boundaries are related to our beliefs, values, cultural norms, ethics (道德), and standards. For example, you value a workplace culture that treats employees and clients with respect and dignity and acts ethically. After six months, you realize that company leaders are repeatedly behaving in ways not consistent with this. 24 Over time, this may lead to significant stress and physical symptoms within.
25 Boundaries serve many functions. They help protect us, clarify our responsibility, preserve our physical and emotional energy, and live our values and standards. Learning the skill of boundary setting helps empower us to prioritize our values and well-being and better manage our stress. Identifying, setting, and maintaining boundaries are skills—valuable skills that, unfortunately, we are often not taught in school or the workplace.
A.Why are boundaries important
B.However, they are equally, if not more, important.
C.Therefore, we need to tell the difference between them.
D.Setting a boundary in the above example may be quite helpful.
E.Boundaries can be physical, mental, emotional, tangible, or intangible.
F.Your values and ethical standards don’t match with your company’s, which likely will lead to internal conflict.
G.Such boundaries often involve being asked to do more than we feel capable of for an extended period of time
If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good looking, too. Right 26
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. 27 Because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life — or “IRL”, as you would say
Other adults worry that you are spoilt (宠坏的) and are lacking in the independent living skills. 28 Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra-curricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
29 Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. The youth also seem to be enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. 30 Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud)
A.You are a promising generation definitely.
B.They view you as the “face-down generation”.
C.Are the face-down oh-ohs a let-down generation
D.The face-down generation actually needs a heads-up.
E.But what do other people think about your generation
F.You always face down and barely notice your surroundings.
G.You aren’t even given chances to face the challenges of adult life.
Struggling to find a dream career Professional landscape photographer Robert Bilos may be a good example. He began taking landscape photos in 2016, drawn to the beauty of exploring the outdoors. From the beginning, he was absorbed in learning everything about photography. 31
This passion soon developed into a deeper artistic exploration. Bilos aims to “show the atmosphere as clearly as possible.” 32 By using creative ways to express the emotion of a scene, he translates his experience of nature into images that feel alive, so that anyone viewing his work can feel as if they were standing right there beside him.
On location, Robert follows a fixed approach to shooting. He begins by planning his shots carefully, but keeps adapting to the changing conditions. 33 Finally, he adjusts his camera settings, waits for the perfect light, and takes the picture. In the process, the right equipment may support the journey, but it is his skill and idea that truly matter.
34 In the Dolomites, for example, the temperature once dropped from 20° to 0°C within 15 minutes, bringing heavy snow. He waited for 12 hours in a cave until the weather turned better. Such challenges require constant adjustments during his shoots. He emphasizes that remaining calm under pressure is of vital importance.
Robert once said, “Don’t try to copy other photos you’ve seen on social media; instead, find your own composition.” 35 He believes that the more he searches, the more he’ll train his eye for the extraordinary.” The same attitude also applies to his future plans to photograph the other mountain ranges and promote environmental protection.
A.Yet nature can be very unpredictable.
B.In general, he travels quite a long way from home.
C.He combines great skill with a powerful sense of place.
D.His advice for photographers is to develop their own style.
E.Then, he uses different tools to achieve high-quality images.
F.Magazines, videos, social media and books became part of his resources.
G.The mountains, valleys, and rivers offer him physical and emotional benefits.
When Hamlet Met Peking Opera
I thought I knew a lot about Hamlet. As a literature student, I’d read the play many times and seen several productions. 36 My confidence was soon challenged when a Beijing Opera adaptation, The Revenge of Prince Zidan, came to town.
With a history of over two hundred years, Peking Opera is a treasure of Chinese culture. But could it be easy to make a Shakespeare play understandable 37
The show began with an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments. 38 A two-stringed instrument, jinghu, which I first mistook for a violin, produced a sound both unique and beautiful. Then the actors, in amazing costumes and elaborate makeup, came on stage. Though they sang in Chinese, the music, their exaggerated movements and mime helped the meanings get across to the audience. Even the stage was simple yet imaginative: a decorated whip represented a horse and a screen with Chinese characters, a study.
39 I’d never imagined Hamlet performing a perfect backflip! That was really incredible! It was so dazzling and energetic that I doubted whether the characters were athletes. Everyone was clapping!
By the end, I was completely fascinated. This wasn’t just Shakespeare in translation. 40 The Revenge of Prince Zidan did more than tell a classic story; it made it leap, sing, and shine in a way I’ll never forget.
A.Curious, I decided to find out.
B.How different could another version be
C.That challenged my expectations of stage design.
D.It brought a completely new sound to my Western ears.
E.My favorite part was the physical movements on stage.
F.This taught me that art went beyond cultural difference.
G.It was Shakespeare recreated through music, color, and motion.
How to Get Along with Friends
Movies and TV shows make friendships seem effortless with little conflict, but real-life friendships require effort and can be complicated. 41
Be positive.
Focusing on the upside makes you a better friend. 42 And balance emotional chats with cheerful topics (books, games, funny stories) to improve friendships and moods. Lean on friends when in trouble — no need to be always positive.
Show sincerity.
43 Whether you’re getting to know each other or are being asked for your feedback, being honest and authentic with your friends will strengthen your bond with them. It’s a lot easier to get along with friends if you’re comfortable sharing your real thoughts and personality.
44
Our friends want to feel cared about. It’s natural to talk only about yourself when unsure what to say, but this might annoy them. Making an effort to learn about their lives shows your care and strengthens your bond. Ask open-ended questions about their lives and interests — this helps a lot!
Make time for each other.
Spending time with your friends has a huge impact, whether it’s for a few minutes or for several hours. Schedule fun activities with your friends, or just find time to talk for a while. You don’t need to have big outings; it can be something as simple as catching up while getting food in the canteen. 45
Real friendships aren’t the effortless ones on screen — they grow when you bring positivity, sincerity, curiosity, and time. Nurture these, and your bonds will stay strong through the years.
A.Talk more about personal life.
B.Show interest in your friends.
C.Or it can be sending them a link they might like.
D.Fortunately, a few tips can make all the difference.
E.Sharing your worries often helps friends feel trusted.
F.Yet constant complaints or hopeless talks tire friends.
G.Your friends don’t need you to be someone you’re not.
How to Stay Safe During a Typhoon
When a typhoon strikes, the world outside can change from calm to dangerous in just a few minutes. The sky darkens, the wind grows wild, and heavy rain begins to fall with great force. 46 But staying calm and taking the right actions can make a big difference.
Stay indoors and keep away from windows.
During a typhoon, the safest place is always indoors. Once the storm begins, do not go outside, not even for a short look. Close all windows and doors tightly, and stay away from glass, which may break when hit by strong wind or flying objects. 47 Waiting indoors may feel long and boring, but it protects you from real danger outside.
Be mindful of electricity and stay alert (警觉的).
Strong wind and rain can be dangerous with electricity. If water begins to enter your home, turn off the main power in no time. Avoid touching wet plugs, wires, or electrical devices. Listen carefully to what’s happening around you. Sometimes a strange sound or sudden silence can mean trouble is near. 48
Follow official warnings and remain patient.
49 Follow the advice of local governments, even if the weather seems calmer for a moment. If the sky suddenly becomes calm, don’t be fooled — it is the “eye” of the typhoon that passes by. The wind can return even harder than before. So you should stay patient and wait for official news.
50
No one can stop the storm, but you can control how you face it. Take deep breaths, speak gently, and try to calm those around you. Help children, the elderly, or neighbors who might be alone. Courage grows when people care for each other. Kindness stands even in the strongest wind.
A.The worst of the storm may be over.
B.It is normal to feel fear at such a moment.
C.A typhoon can change direction or strength at any time.
D.Stay calm and support each other.
E.You need to learn to fix the electricity by yourself.
F.If you live high up, this rule is especially important.
G.During a typhoon, attention saves more than strength does.
SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER
“Are we alone What’s out there ” People have always looked up at the stars and wondered about space. Today, scientists design vehicles to carry astronauts into space to make important discoveries. 51
Before the mid-20th century, most people felt travelling into space was only a dream that could never come true. However, scientists were determined to realise that dream. 52 On 4 October 1957, the Sputnik 1 satellite was launched by the USSR and successfully orbited around Earth. Afterwards, the USSR focused on sending people into space, and on 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in the world to enter space. Over eight years later, on 20 July 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon. Following this, there were many more important space achievements.
53 For example, all the astronauts on the Soyuz 11, Challenger, and Columbia spacecrafts died during their missions. However, while such disasters brought much sadness and disappointment, the desire to explore the universe did not die.
China’s space programme started later than those of Russia and the US, 54 . China became the third country in the world to independently send humans into space in 2003. Then Shenzhou 6 and 7 completed a second manned orbit and the first Chinese spacewalk, followed by the vehicle Jade Rabbit being sent to the moon to study its surface. In 2022, the launch of the Mengtian module signaled the basic completion of the Tiangong Space Station. This modern space station will allow astronauts to conduct many important experiments, greatly furthering our understanding of the universe.
55 Many countries have plans to further study planets like Mars and Jupiter. Despite the difficulties, scientists hope to make more valuable discoveries that will enable the human race to survive well into the future.
A.Although scientists try to make sure nothing goes wrong, accidents can still happen.
B.They decided to put off the work of exploring space.
C.The future of space exploration remains bright.
D.After many experiments, they succeeded in making rockets that could escape Earth’s gravity.
E.but it has made great progress in a short time
F.China has invested too much in space exploration.
G.Space exploration has come a long way, and we now hope to discover other planets that are suitable enough to support life.
Traditional juanren, also called silk figurine, is a time-honored handicraft (手工艺) in China. It first appeared during the Han Dynasty and was popular for centuries. 56 In the early 20th century, it was even at the risk of dying out. Thanks to the efforts of craft masters, this folk craft began to come to life in Beijing, leading to its name: the Beijing silk figurine.
Today, it is recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Most characters of it draw inspiration from various subjects. 57 And they feature lively facial expressions and a unity of form and spirit, showing the charm of traditional Chinese culture.
58 If you make even a slight mistake, everything has to start over. The complexity (复杂性), along with the high cost, limits its wider promotion and makes it difficult to attract new learners. 59 Tang Yan, a keeper of this intangible cultural heritage, has made daring adjustments in the crafting process. By marrying hand-painted techniques with computer-aided production, she has improved the productivity of handcrafting. This improvement, in turn, allows for a wider variety of creative subjects.
A new chapter is opening for the cultural heritage. 60 They bring traditional beauty to a global audience. As Tang Yan believes, by mixing folk art with modern technology, the valuable heritage is not only preserved but also given new life.
A.The creation of these figures is demanding.
B.What is the main reason for the lack of masters
C.What can be done to break through these limitations
D.There is a fascinating story behind every silk figurine.

How to write a movie review
Whether a movie is a dull or a brilliant work of art, if people are watching it, it’s worth critiquing (评论). Writing a movie review can be an exciting but difficult task. You have to be both a viewer, enjoying the performance, and a critic, analyzing the production. 61
Do some background research. It will be valuable to know as much as you can about who worked on the movie. It’s also a good idea to look at reviews for similar movies to know how others have done it.
Take notes as you watch the movie. Before you sit down to watch a film, get your notebook or a computer ready. 62 Taking notes allows you to write down little things you can return to later.
Use plenty of examples to back up your opinions. 63 Describe the way scenes look, the way a certain person acted, camera angles, and so on. You can use dialogue to help you make your points as well.
64 You could treat your review like a formal writing task, but it’s more interesting if you make it your own. If your writing style is usually funny, your review should be no exception. If you’re serious and dramatic, that works, too. Let your language and writing style reflect your unique angle and personality — it’s much more entertaining (娱乐的) for the readers.
Revise and rewrite as needed. Read your review carefully, looking for mistakes, awkward phrasing, or others you might want to change. Don’t be afraid to make major revisions. 65 . If it makes the review better, then take this opportunity to improve your work.
A.Give it some personality.
B.Be creative and interesting.
C.This is where taking notes really pays off.
D.If you take notes the first time, focus on the plot.
E.You might decide to remove or rewrite an entire paragraph.

1.前文“Saving trapped people on upper floors in high-rise buildings is a challenge for the fire department as fire truck ladders only reach a maximum of 33m. If trapped, you need to wait a while for rescue.( 在高层建筑中营救被困在高层的人员对消防部门来说是一项挑战,因为消防车的云梯最大只能伸展到 33 米的高度。如果被困,你需要等待一段时间才能得到救援。)”提到高层火灾中消防车云梯有限,被困后需等待救援,空白处衔接等待救援的这段时间的重要性。E项“And what you do during that time can be truly life-or-death.( 而你在这段时间的所作所为可能关乎生死。)”,承接“等待救援”的语境,突出后续自救方法的必要性,承上启下逻辑紧密。故选E项。
2.前文“Stay calm, and try to figure out where the fire happen. (保持冷静,试着找出火灾发生的地点。)”说要冷静判断火灾位置,后文“If it is cool, you should be able to leave for the nearest exit.( 如果门是凉的,你应该能够前往最近的出口离开。)”提到“如果门是凉的,就可以前往最近的出口”,空白处需填判断门温的动作。A 项“Then feel the door to your unit.( 然后摸一下你房间的门。)”,衔接“判断火灾位置”的动作,且与后文“门凉则可离开”的场景直接呼应,是火灾自救的常规操作。故选A项。
