3 Ways to Create an Exercise Habit
A lot of people want to know how to get motivated (有动力的) to work out and build an exercise habit that sticks. Of course, wanting to make exercise a habit and actually doing it are two different things. Changing your behavior is difficult. 1 . But there are some strategies that can make it easier to stick with an exercise habit.
Develop a routine to make starting easier.
2 . That means they are also behaviors that you start over and over again. If you can develop a routine that makes starting your workout mindless and automatic, then it will be much easier to follow through. You can start building your own routine by adding your exercise habit on top of a current habit or by setting a schedule for yourself.
3
The best way to make exercise a habit is to start with an exercise that is so easy that you can do it even when you can’t get motivated to work out. Struggling to find motivation to go for a run 4 . That’s all you have to do to consider today’s workout a success. Often, this little start will be enough to get your motivation flowing and help you finish the task.
Focus on the habit first and the results later.
The typical approach to diet and exercise is to focus on results first. Most people start with some type of goal. “I want to lose 20 pounds in the next 4 months.” Or, “I want to squat (蹲举) 50 pounds more six months from now.” 5 . What matters most in the beginning is establishing a new normal that you will stick to, not the results that you get.
A.But this is the wrong approach.
B.Living a new type of lifestyle is hard.
C.Start with an exercise that is very small.
D.Never work out while you are running low on willpower.
E.Habits are behaviors that you repeat over and over again.
F.Just fill up your water bottle and put on your running shoes.
G.If you don’t consistently get started, then you won’t have a habit.
For people who are planning a trip, a visit to a museum might not be the first thing they think of. After all, there are plenty of ways to admire the world’s civilization, get exciting experiences and spend nice time with family and friends. 6
Museums are where people learn something new, at every age! Are you interested in something unusual 7 There, you will find yourself drawn in and encouraged! Museums are a fantastic place to learn about the local history, scientific achievements, big cultural celebrations, and of course, ancient animals. They also design shows about visual (视觉的) arts, industrial inventions and anything that encourages visitors to learn about the past and create new paths to the future.
8 They will surely be an exciting part of the educational experience with the main purpose to disclose children to knowledge of different fields and open up their eyes. To achieve that, museums are working to create meaningful and attracting activities, interactive and knowledge-based.
Museums support tourism. They are tourism pushers in small towns and large cities. Museums aren’t a weight on tax revenue (税收) or a separate attention from other city projects. 9 It is reported that museums support more than 726, 000 jobs in America.
Museums shape communities. They hold activities and shows through which visitors can learn about the local history. Museums are places where a shared estate (遗产) is celebrated and a collective oneness is formed. They provide an interesting public space where people meet and talk to each other. 10
A.Museums often hold kids-centered shows.
B.Museums bring out the best parts of children.
C.Instead, they raise money and create more jobs.
D.Then, visit a local museum to learn about that subject.
E.Even shopping at the gift shop there is a chance for connection.

As the college entrance examination was approaching, I was under great pressure in senior three. I fixed my mind entirely on review every day, wishing to improve my grades steadily. The constant chirps from a bird nest in the old banyan tree outside the window always disturbed my study. 11 I even discussed with my classmates whether we could ask the school to remove the nest.
12 He did not criticize our selfish idea at all. In his reply, he told us that every small life should be respected, and we needed to learn to live in harmony with birds while pursuing our dreams. To help us study better, the school prepared thick sound-proof curtains and changed part of our evening self-study time properly.
We were moved by the headmaster’s kindness. 13 The teacher introduced that these birds were in their breeding period and would leave campus soon. She also told us the importance of protecting wild birds and keeping the ecological balance. My annoyance with the chirps disappeared little by little.
One day after class, I went close to the banyan tree to watch the nest. I saw the mother bird flying back and forth with food for her babies. The warm picture made me feel soft in my heart. 14
This experience has changed my attitude towards life. 15 I finally understood that real growth is not only gaining excellent academic results but also learning to be tolerant, gentle and respectful to all lives around us. This warm memory will stay in my heart forever.
A.I lost my focus completely.
B.I no longer saw the chirps as noise.
C.The headmaster replied to us warmly.
D.We attended a special biology lecture.
E.It taught me what real growth truly means.
F.I tried to find a quiet place to study alone.
G.Small and lovely lives deserve our care and protection
Choosing a musical instrument can be exciting, but also a little confusing. The following tips will guide you in finding the instrument that best fits your interests.
1. Get to know the different families of musical instruments.
Musical instruments are categorized (分类) in families. Often, learning how to play one instrument in a family makes it easier to learn other instruments in the same family. 16 The string family includes the violin, the viola and the guitar.
2. Decide which genre (类型) of music you’d like to play.
Many different instruments are connected with a particular genre of music. 17 If you enjoy country music, on the other hand, you might want to try the banjo or the violin.
3. Consider the popularity of the instrument.
18 It will be more obvious if you want to try out for a band or orchestra (管弦乐队). At the same time, sometimes learning a less popular instrument in the same family will make it easier to learn that other more popular instrument later on.
4. 19
Try a small show where you can see people play who are at different levels of mastery. Watching skilled musicians perform can give you a better idea of what you can do with the instrument.
5. Research maintenance (保养) and ownership costs for the instrument.
The money you spend to buy an instrument is a small cost, compared to how much you need to maintain it. Take these costs into account before you decide to focus on a particular instrument. 20
A.It’s never too late to learn an instrument.
B.Watch musicians playing the instrument live.
C.Make your instrument produce a sound correctly.
D.The keyboard family includes the piano, the organ, and the harpsichord.
E.A skilled musician can help you know the cost of owning that instrument.
F.For example, the guitar is an important instrument in rock and pop music.
G.Choosing a more popular instrument may mean you face hard competition.
It’s no secret that artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we work. With more and more simpler tasks being automated, humans are left with more high-level cognitive (认知) tasks including idea generation, strategic planning, and creative writing. 21
The problem is that we still follow a mindset that reflects the era of assembly (组装) lines, which doesn’t encourage or facilitate the type of work needed today. Leaders constantly measured productivity in terms of hours spent at work or the number of abstract targets they reached. 22 Instead, we have to make a psychological switch, structuring each workday for quality instead of quantity.
Start by kicking the old method of continuous work throughout the day. Research shows that continuous work damages creative idea generation and high quality, complex cognitive work. 23 It’s recommended that we use work sessions that are about 90 minutes long, attacking the hardest part of the task in the first 20 minutes and moving to the slower, easier work during the remaining time.
24 Data suggests that it’s better to work on tasks that involve creativity, imagination, and problem solving during the first few hours of the day and again right before you go to sleep. The middle of the day is better for something calling for concentration. 25
A.The time of day will also make a difference.
B.This type of output doesn’t fit in the era of AI.
C.AI enables efficient application of work schedules.
D.Applying AI can improve our productivity significantly.
E.Because of that, it’s better to work in bursts, giving the mind a rest.
F.To excel in the new era of work, we’ll need to transform how we work.
G.In between the focused work sessions, make time for a nap or low-effort efforts.
Managing Stress in Your First Year of High School
Starting high school is a major milestone. It brings new friends, more independence, and exciting activities. However, it also brings new schoolwork pressures and social challenges. 26 . Here are some proven ways to help you manage stress and stay healthy.Sleep first
With homework piling up, you may want to stay up late to finish it. But getting enough sleep is important for your brain and mood. Experts recommend aiming for 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Try to stick to a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends. 27 .Establish daily habits
Small, intentional habits can act as a “reset” button for your mind. 28 . These habits could be listening to your favorite playlist on the bus, journaling for five minutes before bed, or taking a short walk. These moments of calm allow you to process your emotions. 29
Feeling connected to others can greatly help you fight against stress. You don’t need to be popular, but you do need a support system. Joining a club or activity based on your interests is a great way to meet like-minded friends. Whether it’s a sports team, a drama club, or a volunteer group, being part of a community helps you feel like you belong.Stay organized
30 . Spending time organizing your schedule can significantly reduce this feeling. Use a planner or an app to keep track of assignments and deadlines. Breaking large projects into smaller steps can make them feel much more manageable.
A.Find “your people”
B.Talk to your friends
C.This can lead to serious health problems if ignored
D.They don’t have to be time-consuming or complicated
E.Anxiety often comes from the feeling of losing control
F.Thus, learning to cope with stress is necessary for students
G.A well-rested brain handles stress much better than a tired one
Going green while travelling is an effective way to protect the Earth’s natural and cultural resources. It is also a great way to build deeper connections with local communities and the environment. 31
Travel locally. If a vacation is what you need, try choosing nearby destinations and staying local. Surprise yourself by discovering the nearby attractions. This way, you get to save time and money and avoid air travel, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
32 Avoid eating at multinational chain restaurants or shopping in large supermarkets and brand stores. Instead, choose small businesses to help improve the local economy. This way, you’re helping keep people employed and preventing transportation across far distances.
Choose green accommodation. 33 To ensure this, you may need to find answers to questions like if the hotel is certified, or if it has a sustainability report, or what their waste management protocol (方案) and plastic policy, look like, or if their products and menus are locally sourced, and so on.
Use green transport. Flying can seem easy and attractive, but it’s especially harmful to the environment. If your destination can be reached by train, consider opting for it. While exploring cities, cycling and walking are recommended. 34 If you have no option but to fly, consider booking non-stop flights instead of having layovers (中途停留).
Go paperless. A lot of attractions accept online tickets. 35 By going paperless, you not only help the environment but also avoid losing tickets and enjoy easy access to them at the same time.
A.This prevents travelers from printing boarding passes, hotel reservations, and entry tickets.
B.Always switch off lights before leaving your room.
C.Slow travel is a smart and responsible way to travel.
D.To become a green traveller, you can follow these simple steps.
E.It’s also advisable to use public transport instead of cars, which consume double the amount of fuel.
F.On vacations, choose hotels that employ green practices.
G.Shop and eat locally.
Change is a natural part of life, but when it comes to friendships, it can sometimes feel worrying. You might wonder why this is happening if nothing has gone wrong, or you may start to feel fear about losing connections that once felt unbreakable. 36 .
While our early friendships help shape our identity, those we form later in life serve different roles, shaping our careers, supporting our responsibilities, and helping us through life’s transitions. 37 . What we once needed from friendships in high school or early adulthood may no longer fit the realities of our personal growth and life direction.
38 . They help us navigate our sense of self and social belonging. Friendships at this stage play a defining role in shaping who we are, or at least who we think we want to be. As life moves forward, the friendships that once felt essential may start to fade. This does not necessarily mean they weren’t meaningful, but it’s because we are growing into different versions of ourselves. For many, the transition from high school to adulthood is a turning point in friendships.
As people mature, so do their responsibilities, interests, and environments. 39 . Losing a friendship, whether from gradually growing distant or experiencing a sudden disconnect, can be emotionally challenging. It’s natural to feel sadness, confusion, or even frustration when someone who once played an important role in your life is no longer present.
Embrace the change and growth. Change is an inevitable part of life, and friendships are no exception. Recognize that friendships evolve doesn’t reduce their past value. 40 . Rather than seeing it as a loss, embrace it as an opportunity to explore your independence, strengthen your self-identity, and form new connections that fit the person you’re becoming.
A.Instead, it reflects personal growth
B.We feel very sad at losing close friends
C.This leads to adjustments in their social circles
D.We expect to have life-long friends in our childhood
E.The truth is, as we grow and change, so do our relationships
F.Research highlights that as we mature, our social priorities shift
G.During our young adulthood, friendships serve as a mirror to our identity
“What do you think I should do ” asks your friend, as she sits beside you, waiting for your advice. This is no easy situation. Say something your friend disagrees with or something helpless, and you might feel you’ve disappointed her.
It’s human nature to want to offer solutions when someone comes to you with a problem. It’s also easy to fall into the trap of simply saying that “Everything will be OK”. 41 But we often say that because we believe we need to say something. This is because we’re glad that our friend has come to us for help, even if we don’t really think we’re able to give it. 42 The answer is yes...if it’s done in the right way.
In fact, friends often really only want someone to listen to them. It’s important to try to work out whether they’re actually asking for advice, or simply wanting to talk over whatever is going round in their head. 43 There’s no harm in asking whether they’d like you to give suggestions.
It’s also important to be honest. If you’re unable to think of a way to solve your friends’ problem, just say so. Your friends won’t feel upset, and you can still listen carefully and try to put yourself in their shoes. 44 You can ask yourself “What would I do if I were to experience the same thing ” Later you can go back to your friends with a few helpful suggestions.
45 It can be hard to listen to your friends going over and over the same thing without being able to help them. They will certainly be thankful if you just allow them to “talk it out”, though. Maybe they’re building up courage to take action, and need to convince (说服) themselves they’re doing the right thing. Just being there for them may be all you have to do to make things better.
A.Friendship is the most important to us.
B.This is not actually useful for your friend.
C.So is it a good idea to try to give advice at all
D.You can find someone else to ask for their ideas.
E.Sometimes a problem doesn’t go away overnight.
F.Talking may make people feel better all by themselves.
G.Then you can go away and try to think of something helpful.
Have you ever found yourself reciting your grocery list out loud in the supermarket or saying something encouraging to yourself before a big moment If so, you are not alone. Talking to ourselves, either within our heads or out loud, is a common behavior. Psychologists refer to it as “self-talk,” a mental tool like a Swiss army knife. 46
Saying something out loud, whether it’s positive or negative, can make the thought that you’re expressing seem more official, or public, than if you merely think about it. 47 For them, working through a problem aloud helps them think more clearly and see how things fit together.
Some people report using self-talk to help them calm down in periods of negative mental states. Research, for instance, has found that when people are anxious or stressed, they are more likely to engage in self-talk. 48 It is like giving yourself the support a friend would.
49 “I really do believe in the power of positive self-talk, at the gym, in the mirror, before a big meeting — all of that,” says Carol Bergman, 52. She does it before she works out with “Come on, you got this!” or with “You look great!” if she needs to hear some kind words about herself from time to time.
In fact, we learn to talk to ourselves in childhood, where it is associated with better performance on tasks and challenging activities. 50 As adults, we may return to speaking out loud when mentally or emotionally challenged. In such moments, it serves as an extra tool to help us focus and think and solve problems. So talking to yourself is not being as strange as you think you are.
A.However, we do it less as we grow older.
B.Self-talk also helps people stay motivated.
C.Here are some ways to put it into practice.
D.It’s a superpower that we all naturally possess.
E.It can be useful in many different situations in life.
F.Speaking emotions aloud makes them manageable.
G.Some people use self-talk to sort through a challenge.
Maybe you’ re a new parent busy keeping the house in order. Or maybe you’re a student struggling with a homework assignment. Everyone has been in a situation where they could use some help. 51 Maybe you feel embarrassed or scared that you’ll be turned down. Don’t worry! Once you figure out what you need, you can make a polite and organized request.
Choose the right time. Don’t ask someone for help when they are obviously busy or distracted. For example, don’t ask your professor for help with homework right as they are trying to start class. 52
Be specific. People aren’t mind readers. 53 For example, instead of saying to your partner, “I need you to help more around the house,” you may say, “Could you please take the trash out and also do a load of laundry, please ”
Be persistent. Sometimes the help you receive might not turn out the way you expected. That can be frustrating. However, it is important not to give up. 54 If you asked someone for help and they didn’t come through, don’t be afraid to ask someone else. Sometimes, you may need to reach out to a few people before getting assistance.
55 People will be more likely to agree to help you if you have been known for helping others. If you see a co-worker who has too much on their plate, offer your assistance. They’ll likely return the favor when you’ re tired and stressed.
A.Return the favour if possible.
B.Build a name as a helpful person.
C.Unfortunately, it can feel difficult to ask for help.
D.Keep trying to get help and make it work for you.
E.It is important to remember that it is not weak to ask for help.
F.Similarly, don’t ask your boss for advice as they are rushing out the door.
G.Instead of just saying “I need help,” clearly state precisely what it is that you need.
Traditional festivals are an important part of human culture and civilization. Across the globe, people gather to celebrate, remember, and honor customs that have been handed down through generations. 56 Here, we explore why people celebrate traditional festivals worldwide.
One of the primary reasons traditional festivals are celebrated is to preserve and promote cultural heritage. Festivals act as living museums where customs, art forms, music, dance, clothing, and other traditions come alive. 57 For example, the Chinese New Year is full of special traditions that respect ancestors and bring good luck.
Traditional festivals often match seasonal cycles and farming patterns (模式). Historically, agricultural communities depended heavily on nature’s cycles for planting and harvesting crops. Festivals marked key points in these cycles to give thanks for good harvests or to pray for good weather. Examples include the Mid-Autumn Festival which celebrates the harvest moon. 58
Festivals provide a stage for cultural expression where music, dance, handmade works, and local food are shown with great excitement. These creative activities help keep old art forms alive while also bringing in new ideas. 59 Young people can learn these skills from older family members at festivals. This helps pass traditions to the next generation.
60 Festivals improve local economy by creating demand for goods such as handmade items, local food, traditional clothes, hotels, bus and taxi services, and more. Small family businesses can earn more during festival times. This helps improve people’s living standards in the community.
A.Festivals are symbols of new beginnings.
B.Many traditional festivals have deep religious roots.
C.These festivals are different but share common reasons.
D.They remind communities of their shared history and identity.
E.Many festivals have also become important for business today.
F.They make cultures more colorful and different from each other.
G.Such human activities show respect for nature’s influence on survival.
Making decisions in life can be a difficult task. 61 In fact, the decisions you make today will not only influence your future, but also other people and the world in which you live.
Decision-making involves thinking, talking, and searching for information related to a problem. 62 You do this by talking with others who know about the subject, going to the library, and thinking about two or more solutions.
Decision-making usually happens when events, habits, and ways of living change. An example is your ten-year-old car breaks down and needs much money to repair. You need transportation to get to work, to do shopping, and to deal with other tasks. 63
In deciding — or making a decision — there is a six-step process:
● Define the problem. Understand the problem clearly.
● Collect and list all the information you can get on the problem.
● 64 It is important to have many possible solutions to the situation. It will take time to research the variety of solutions.
● 65 Look at the good and bad sides to each solution. What are the results of each Answer the questions: Will this solution be good for me... the family... co-workers Stay with your values and those of your family.
● Choose the best solution to solve your problem.
● Evaluate(评估) the decision you made. Decide if you need to change your action plan.
A.Set clearly defined goals or action plans.
B.Analyze the possible results of each solution.
C.Examine two or more solutions to the situation.
D.You must decide the best way to spend the family’s money.
E.You probably won’t be happy with every decision you make.
F.You collect data that can help you with the decisions you need to make.
G.Throughout your life you will make some decisions that will influence your future.
How Do You Motivate (激励) Seniors to Use Technology
Motivating your elderly loved ones to welcome technology with open arms isn’t easy. Before you give up on them, remember that it’s not about forcing them. 66 Here are some suggestions for how to approach with patience and a focus on the benefits.
67 Instead of just telling them to follow the times, we need to show how tech makes their life better. Will it help them connect with family Access important information Take up a hobby Make their lives easier It’s important to focus on practical benefits, not cold features.
Find their sweet spot. Not every senior wants to be an online influencer. 68 If a grandpa loves reading, teach him to use e-reading apps; if a grandma likes chatting, introduce her to simple social software. This kind of personalized guidance can make them feel that tech is close to their life and easy to master.
Celebrate small wins. Did grandma finally send her first text message Did grandpa figure out how to turn on the air conditioner on his smart home device Make a big deal out of it! 69
Be patient. Seniors may need repeated explanations. Use simple words and even a little humor. 70 Remember, it might take many tries before they feel confident. Your calm support makes all the difference.
With these gentle ways, seniors will gradually open their hearts to technology and enjoy a more convenient life with it.
A.Start with the “why”.
B.Keep instructions simple.
C.It’s never late for the elderly to learn new things.
D.They can make the learning process much more relaxed.
E.It’s about showing them how tech can improve their lives.
F.You’d better offer your tech suggestions based on their interests and needs.
G.Every small progress they make deserves sincere praise and recognition from you.
Humans may have begun taming(驯养) animals and growing small crops as early as 10,000 years ago. However, many early people were nomads who moved from place to place. 71 They hunted, fished, and gathered nuts, berries, and roots. Life was hard and uncertain.
Over time, people began to keep animals in herds. 72 They built homes and started farming the land around them. Growing crops provided a more reliable food supply than hunting and gathering. As a result, small settlements grew into villages, towns, and eventually cities.
Farmers also discovered that planting certain crops together was helpful. Native Americans, for example, planted beans, corn, and squash together. 73 People also realized that rotating crops — changing what is grown on the same land each year — helps keep the soil healthy. Sometimes, farmers leave fields empty for a while to give the land a rest.
The Industrial Revolution, about 200 years ago, brought major changes to farming. Before this, people used hand tools and animals to farm. 74 Because fewer workers were needed on farms, many people moved to cities to find jobs.
75 In the mid-1900s, scientists developed new types of wheat and rice that produced much more food. This was called the Green Revolution. Today, much of our food is grown on large farms, often owned by big companies. These farms use irrigation and chemicals to increase production. However, since the early 2000s, organic farming has become more popular.
A.Modern farming continues to change.
B.New machines made farming easier and faster.
C.They found their food in the wild as they traveled.
D.This led them to stay in one place for longer periods.
E.However, early farming methods often destroyed the soil very quickly.
F.Farmers often shared tools and seeds with their neighbors in early villages.
G.This method brought them better results than growing each crop separately.
Animals have always had to adapt. 76 The rate of species loss is growing, and it’s estimated to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. The World Wide Fund for Nature revealed a 73% decline in the average size of the wildlife populations monitored between 1970 and 2020. Currently, around a third of amphibian (两栖的) species are at risk of extinction.
Mass extinction events can also cause animals to evolve as the territories they live in change so quickly. Animals must adapt to survive in new environments where previous wildlife has been eliminated. 77 Our ancestors evolved three times faster in the 10 million years following the giant species’ extinction compared to the previous 80 million years.
78 After all, those adapting well are far more likely to survive. Many animals use hairless parts of their body to help regulate their body temperature. In the case of wood mice, their tails are becoming longer. Similarly, the ears of elephants are growing.
This comes down to simple physical principles: animals can cool off more quickly through larger surface areas. At the same time, animals are becoming smaller, which again helps them to lose heat more quickly because of the greater surface areas to volume. Animals are also becoming lighter in colour. 79 Surely, it’s a good thing that animals are adapting Well, yes and no.
Adaptation to meet one challenge can create new challenges. Birds with larger beaks (喙), for example, may find it more difficult to feed. 80 The current situation has scientists concerned about the rate at which this “shapeshifting" is happening.
A.This may lead to unnecessary food waste.
B.Those without this ability have simply been extinct.
C.The realistic question is how far an animal can adapt.
D.Global warming destroys the homes of many animals.
E.Animals change body structures due to climate change.
F.For instance, evolution exploded after dinosaurs died out.
G.That keeps them cooler and better hidden in sunny places.
