In my family, Norooz — the Persian New Year — has always been the most important day of the year. It means making and enjoying 1 prepared dishes with the people I love, the sound of drinks pouring, and the 2 of fingers moving fast to deal with nuts.
When I met my husband, Kyle, I told him everything about Norooz, which Kyle loves very much, and that’s a(n) 3 . After moving to the US with him, I knew we had to 4 a way to be with my family for the occasion.
The only way for me to be with my parents is for all of us to 5 in Istanbul. It’s not easy or 6 , but we’ll do it, because, for us, Norooz is top priority, and nothing can 7 family. Since moving to the US, I’ve broken many 8 , but this is one I’d never break.
Every year, around the festival, Kyle and I sort out our Norooz plans and start 9 and when I get on the plane, my heart feels so full and 10 , knowing that I’ll be with my 11 , and show Kyle how these days are about 12 , hope, and new beginnings.
The days we spend in Istanbul are 13 . We prepare for Norooz just like we used to when I was a kid. Our time together 14 so much more only now, because we 15 better than to assume it will always be there without appreciation.

That worn book still sits on my shelf, though I’m 20 to open it now in case it falls apart completely.

Then, 25 , the digital age brought it all back. With the Kindle, an e-book reader, I 26 with literature and rediscovered my love for reading. But soon the smart phone replaced the Kindle as a means to read and this gradually took the joy away again. Smartphones 27 my ability to focus on anything lengthy, let alone a novel. My 28 ran out as quickly as the battery.
Recently I picked out one of the old books on my bookshelf. I’ve 29 to my childhood reading style. I put the phone away, open the book, and 30 read. I felt like revisiting The Famous Five. I can’t wait.

Living in a small city apartment, I never gave much thought to gardening. Everything 121 after I moved to a new neighbourhood and met Mrs Parker, an elderly 122 whose garden was colorful and full of life.
Whenever I passed by, I saw her 123 among the flowers, tending to them with quiet care. At first, I admired the neighbour’s dedication (奉献), but did not quite understand it. One day, she invited me into her garden to join her and handed me a pair of 124 . She noticed my confusion and 125 that gardening was not just about planting, but about understanding each plant’s 126 and raising it over time.
When I admitted that I was poor at gardening, Mrs. Parker 127 with a gentle smile and stated that real growth takes patience. She 128 pointed out that while some plants develop slowly, they are still worth careful attention. I considered her words. I 129 that her garden was not just a hobby, but her 130 on life itself.

Last summer, my grandfather suggested I spend a week with him, helping to restore an old community garden. I was initially hesitant (犹豫的), as I had no 136 in gardening and feared failure.
The garden was in a 137 state; weeds were everywhere, and the few remaining plants looked weak. On the first morning, Grandpa simply handed me a pair of gloves and said, “We start by pulling these weeds. Remember, every big change begins with a small 138 .” I worked slowly, my back aching under the hot sun. I wanted to 139 , but seeing my grandfather’s steady devotion kept me going. 140 the physical labor was tough, the mental barrier was higher. I had to constantly fight the voice in my head telling me I couldn’t 141 it. Grandpa noticed my 142 . “Don’t focus on the whole garden,” he advised 143 . “Just focus on clearing one small area at a time.”
Upon this simple advice, I changed my approach. I 144 looking at the seemingly impossible task and concentrated on one square meter of soil. Afterwards, I was 145 making progress. A local news reporter even visited, writing a wonderful article about our project. This attracted several volunteers, who brought fresh energy and 146 .
By the week’s end, the change was 147 . Neat rows of new seedlings stood where weeds once ruled. The community’s gratitude was immeasurable. As a child, I was very shy. I wanted to be successful, but lacked confidence. When I discovered 151 , I found something I was good at. I began to be 152 by my friends and this gave me the desire to climb harder and higher mountains. I discovered that nothing was impossible if I could find the 153 to try.
Both individual determination and team work are 154 to success when climbing. You need to rely on the 155 of your team and share in the achievement. But personal focus and determination to keep 156 despite any difficulty are an important 157 to team success.
My greatest achievement in climbing is being the first ever to 158 the 5,000-foot Troll Wall in Norway, whose rock face is the 159 and most vertical (垂直) in Europe. A stone which drops from the summit will touch nothing until it 160 on the valley floor one mile below.
Before our climb, the experts in Europe had said it was 161 to climb the Troll Wall. But with three companions, I decided to try. It took ten days to make the climb and we slept on ledges (岩石架) no more than a foot wide. But I 162 .
Afterwards, I said to myself, “If I can do that, I can do anything.” Some years 163 , I succeeded in climbing Mount Everest-the highest mountain in the world.
164 to me is not hanging on a rope on the side of a mountain, but is just one field where adventurous people can constantly 165 themselves. If we look at every day as an adventure. we can challenge ourselves and continue to grow throughout our life. That is the final adventure.

When my school introduced an AI-powered learning platform, I thought it would make everything easier. When I was tired of struggling with math problems for hours, the idea of having a digital tutor 166 me seemed like a dream come true.
For the first few weeks, it was exactly what I had hoped for. Whenever I 167 a problem, the platform would provide step-by-step solutions. I stopped thinking and simply followed the instructions. My homework was getting done faster than ever, and I felt a sense of 168 every time I submitted perfect answers.
But something strange began to happen. In class, when the teacher asked questions about what we had learned, I found myself 169 . I could recall the answers I had typed, but I couldn’t explain why they were correct. I had been so focused on 170 the right answers that I had never learned the thinking behind them.
The turning point came during a test. I stared at a problem that looked familiar — I had solved it on the platform just days before. But my mind was 171 . I couldn’t remember a single step. When I got my grade, it was the lowest I had ever received. I felt like I had 172 myself.
That night, I had a long conversation with my math teacher. “Technology is a tool,” she said. “But it can’t think for you. The struggle you were avoiding is exactly where real 173 happens.” Her words stayed with me.
I decided to 174 using the platform — but differently. Instead of asking for answers, I used it to check my work after I had tried on my own. When I got stuck, I would review the explanations and then 175 the problem once again. It was slower and harder, but gradually, things began to 176 .
By the end of the semester, my grades had improved — but more importantly, I had learned something far more valuable. Technology can be a powerful 177 , but it can’t replace the process of overcoming difficulties. The shortcuts (捷径) I had taken weren’t saving me time; they were 178 away the learning I needed.
Now, whenever I see an ad promising instant success, I think back to those weeks when I let an app do my thinking. The real growth, I’ve learned, doesn’t come from 179 the hard parts. It comes from 180 them.
