Have you ever stayed in a hotel Most hotels often provide guests with things like disposable (一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers (拖鞋). Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own things. But, if you travel to some European countries, remember to bring your own things. Many hotels in these countries no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use fewer disposable things
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once.
It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know that, on average, one person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In New York, people throw away more than 20,000 tons of plastic food every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down (降解). So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life:
● Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones.
● After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again.
● Do not use paper cups.
● At your school canteen, use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.

A cat’s diary
Today is August 8. It is International Cat Day. What surprise will my human give me today Let me guess...
5 a.m.
My human is still sleeping. After all, she went to bed only four hours ago. She always stays up late playing with a matchbox-like thing. Wait. Her hand is hanging from her bed. Is she trying to play with me What a surprising gift! I’ll just bite her hand to thank her.
7 a.m.
I’m honestly done with my human. Her small brain can’t even understand love! Two hours ago, I tried to thank her for her kind Cat Day gift with a friendly bite. But I was wrong. It was not a gift at all. She shouted at me. It was so frightening!
8 a.m.
Finally, my human gets up. I have meowed six times to remind her that it’s International Cat Day today. But she takes no notice of me. She just mindlessly pours something into my bowl. She’s in a hurry every morning.
3 p.m.
I’m busy today. In the morning, I went through the cupboards. I saw my human put some food there last night. Then, I fought with my old enemy, the red woolen ball. Now, I’m going to take a nap.
9 p.m.
My human comes in. She works overtime every day, but... does she work hard If she works hard, she should be rich. Then, why doesn’t she buy me some tastier food—at least on this special day

The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, “I’m sorry, I can’t sell you a ticket. Our computer is down.”
“If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket.”
“I can’t write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so.”
I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, “What do all you people do ”
“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”
“So when it goes down, you go down with it.”
“That’s good, sir.”
“How long will the computer be down ” I wanted to know.
“I have no idea. Sometimes it’s down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There’s no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it’s down, it won’t answer us.”
After the girl told me they had no backup (备用) computer, I said. “Let’s forget the computer. What about your planes They’re still flying, aren’t they ”
“I couldn’t tell without asking the computer.”
“Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he’s flying to Washington,” I suggested.
“I wouldn’t know which gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn’t take you if you didn’t have a ticket.”
“Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours ”
“I wouldn’t know,” she said, pointing at the dark screen. “Only ‘IT’ knows. It can’t tell me.”
