Turning rubbish into new earth
My father is a quiet man. He has his thoughts, but he usually keeps them to himself. There is one thing that really gets him excited. Just say the word “rubbish” to him. Or I should say, he loves solving the rubbish problem very much!
“We have become a ‘throw-away’ society,” he says. “We buy and buy, and then we throw it away. We can’t keep doing this. Rubbish is everybody’s problem.” My father doesn’t just talk about it though. When he sees a problem, he tries to find a solution.
Last year, my father decided to do something about all the wasted food we were throwing away. One family makes nearly 500 pounds of food waste each year. We throw away the potato skins and the apple cores (核) when we finish with them. Imagine how they collect in the large area!
However, there is something that we can do to reuse rubbish. For example, if we carefully deal with food waste, it can be changed from rubbish to a rich, dark earth known as compost (肥料). This compost can be added to vegetable gardens to make the plants grow very well.
“I bought a compost bin today.” Dad said at dinner one night, “From now on, instead of throwing away all our food waste, we will put it in the compost bin. Mother Nature will slowly turn it from rubbish into earth.”
It took a while to get used to it, but soon, we were taking our food waste to the compost bin. In three months, we found it rich in compost material!

An Experiment Report on Growing Potato Plants
Things to prepare:
*a potato that has sprouts (发芽)
*a flower pot with soil
*a camera to record progress
Observation:
Day Seven Without much change in the past six days, I finally see some new progress on Buddy as it has grown taller. It’s exciting to see new life like this. I hope Buddy can grow faster.
Day Eleven Buddy is getting larger! Three more new sprouts have grown around Buddy! Green leaves have grown on the new sprouts, but they have not fully grown yet. I guess I need to be a bit more patient.
Day Thirteen Buddy continues to grow taller. The leaves on the new sprouts have grown a bit. I’m also excited to see more new sprouts that have grown from under the soil.
Day Fifteen Finally, the leaves on the other sprouts are 3 cm tall. They’re so green. I hope they will soon grow into new potatoes.
What I have learned
It’s really interesting to grow potatoes. During these fifteen days, I have learned that growing potato plants needs plenty of water. If soil is dry, the potato will fail to grow. I have also learned that the temperature needs to be right. If it is too cold it won’t grow. I feel that growing plants is just like trying to succeed with anything in life—it takes not only time, but also lots of efforts and patience.
7.How many things are needed to do this experiment
8.When do the potato plants start to change a lot
9.Does the writer feel excited or disappointed when she sees the progress of the plant
10.What do you need to do to grow potato plants successfully
11.How is growing plants similar to trying to succeed in life

The Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA) is the dream high school for Antel McDowell, a 14-year-old student, who is from Maryland, the US. He has hoped to become a professional (专业的) dancer since he began dancing to music videos on television when he was young.
The school holds auditions (试镜) every year and there is a lot of competitions. McDowell, along with 1,322 other kids, competed for the 116 seats in next year’s class.
“I put all of my energy (精力) into getting ready for the auditions,” McDowell said. He practiced hard on weekends and after school, memorizing (记住) the songs he planned to perform. He also performed in front of family members and friends.
At the auditions, McDowell was asked to balance on one leg. McDowell stood straight and kept the rest of his body still. When he was told to lie on his back and relax, McDowell’s toes moved all the way out in the sides, showing his ankles’ flexibility (踝关节的柔韧性). “I was also asked to sing in Italian,” McDowell said. “I was so lucky, because I had practiced an Italian song.”
Last week, McDowell found that his hard work paid off — he passed the auditions. “You have a dream. Then, you must work hard to make it happen,” McDowell said. “When you realise your dream, you will find that all your hard work is worthwhile.”

Feeling down Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have found trees helpful for reducing stress. Although it looks strange, there’s a science behind hugging trees.
It can be explained by the “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)”. Just being outside in nature is good for your mental health. US scientist Edward Wilson first discovered it in 1984. According to him, humans are born to love being close to other living things. Human’s love for nature is “in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
Some studies have looked into why tree-hugging can help with our health. After people hug trees, they often say that they feel calmer and more relaxed than those who do not. A study found that the activity can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone (荷尔蒙) that controls how you feel. The more oxytocin you have, the happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can make your body show a higher level of oxytocin.
Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a sign of stress. The brain creates more cortisol when a person is worried, angry or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut the process, which makes us feel better.
Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we should be kind when hugging trees. The tree is home to many small living things that are too small to be seen. We shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it.
25.When did US scientist first discover the “biophilia hypothesis”
26.Do people prefer natural green views or city views
27.What may happen if you hug a tree for more than 21 seconds

①Bamboo is just a big piece of grass. It grows fast and is very thin. The oak (橡树) is a tree. It grows slow, straight and strong. It’s even thought to be a symbol (象征) of strength.
②A few years ago there was a big storm in Britain. It destroyed many old oaks that people thought could never be destroyed. There were also some bamboo trees at a zoo in Britain but they survived.
③The British were surprised. How could thin, fragile (脆弱的) bamboo trees survive a big storm when strong oaks could not
④The reason is flexibility (柔韧性). The oak trees fought against the wind with their strength but the wind turned out to be stronger. The bamboo trees didn’t. Their flexibility allowed them to bend and let the wind pass by.
⑤Life is full of changes and we really can’t stop them. Recently some students at my school were upset when they got a new English teacher. They liked their old teacher and they didn’t like the new one because he had a different personality and a different style of teaching. Some students behaved (表现) like oaks. They refused to change and just stopped learning. Other students behaved like bamboo. It’s no surprise that the marks of the “oak” students went down but the marks of the “bamboo” students went up.
⑥When change comes into your life, don’t fight against it and break like an oak. Bend a little like bamboo and you will achieve success.

The Tooth Fairy’s Secret
Have you heard of the Tooth Fairy (仙子) Here are two passages about it.
Passage 1The Tooth Fairy is a magical figure of people’s early childhood. It says that when a child loses a baby tooth, if he or she puts it under the bed pillow (枕头), the Tooth Fairy will visit while the child sleeps, and change the lost baby tooth with a coin. People believe it can provide such comfort for a child experiencing fear or pain when they lose a tooth. That’s why the Tooth Fairy tradition is practiced in many countries. A 2016 report found that American children receive $3.70 per tooth on average. However, in another research, upon learning the Tooth Fairy is not real, 75% of the children said that they still liked the tradition, 5% didn’t support (支持) it and the others were neutral (中立的).Passage 2 “Mom, is the Tooth Fairy real ” Emma asked, holding a shiny coin in her hand. Mom looked at her and she knew at once that Emma had seen her put the coin under the pillow last night. “Well…the magic is real. Last summer I spent a month helping out in a hospital with my parents as a charity. I thought it was a nice chance to see if I really wanted to be a doctor. It was the month that changed my life. I was introduced to a completely different world from the one I knew, and I soon understood how difficult people’s lives can be. But I was also shocked at how positively people go about their everyday lives. The way they come together and help each other is a real encouragement. Although I’m a girl, I’m not afraid of getting dirty or tired.
My volunteer work in the hospital was hard. I spent a lot of time cleaning floors and I also spent some time looking after the patients. I even talked to some doctors and knew about their jobs. They told me the difficulties being a doctor in the hospital—hard work, long hours, and so many emotional challenges. But they also said that they didn’t want to change their jobs and they just wanted to go on. Though it was a difficult experience, it didn’t change my mind about being a doctor.

43.How did she feel when she saw how positive people were
44.What does the girl think of her volunteer work in the hospital

Last weekend, I decided to make cookies for our family picnic. I had seen Mom mix things in a bowl many times, but now I wanted to try. I put on my apron and put flour, sugar, and chocolate chips on the table, like toys ready to play with.
At first, making the dough was easy. I did what the recipe (食谱) said. But when the oven bell rang, I felt . The first plate of cookies was smelly and dark, like old leaves on the ground. My little sister, Lily, came in and made a face. “They look like rocks!” she said. I washed the bowl hard, feeling down. Just when I wanted to cry, Lily held my sleeve. “Don’t give up, big brother! Remember when I couldn’t ride my bike at first ” Her words made me feel a little better.
Just as I threw the burnt cookies away, I saw Grandma’s old apron hanging on the wall. The dirty marks on it told me she had made mistakes too. I touched the soft cloth and remembered how she always sang while baking. “If Grandma didn’t quit, neither will I,” I said to myself. Mom heard me and came over. “Let’s read the recipe together,” she smiled. She showed me how to check if the oven was too hot.
This time, I measured the sugar carefully, one spoon at a time. I even set a timer to make sure I baked them just right. When the new cookies came out of the oven, they were golden, like little clouds. At the picnic, Mom’s eyes opened wide when she took a bite. “These are the best cookies I’ve ever tasted!” she said. When I was six years old, Grandpa sent me into the woods to gather pecans (山核桃). Pecan picking was quite difficult for me and my little basket was only half full. Just then, something caught my eyes. A large squirrel (松鼠) was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and was gone in a large hole in the tree. A moment later, he jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.
I ran to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. I scooped (掏;抓起) all of them into my basket. Now it was full! I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans. He looked into the basket and said, “Well, how did you find so many ” I told him the truth.

For many years scientists have said that the Earth is getting warmer. Now they have found something new-hot cities! In the southern US, they have found that cities become very hot in summer.
China also has the same kind of problems. Every year more farming land is used for factories or offices. More housing is needed, too. As people become richer, they buy more cars. New roads are needed and new car parks are built in the city centres. This all makes the cities hotter.
It is not easy to change the situation (情形). City planners say that we should plant more trees in the middle of cities. “Every new street should have trees on both sides,” they say. Trees make the temperature lower, so we should have more trees in our parks and squares. Also we should paint our roofs (屋顶) white. If we do this, they do not become so hot. Every roof in a hot and sunny country should have solar (太阳的) roof panels (板). The electricity from these can be used to run the air-conditioners in the building.
People continue (继续) to cut down forests around the cities. This makes the problem worse. Cities are growing faster and faster. By the year 2050, 80% of the world’s population will be living in cities. If we go on like this, there will not be enough farmland to feed everyone in the world. Therefore, the city planers suggest that we should ________.
