Gordon Williams’s hobby may seem strange to people when they meet it for the first time. But it is a traditional craft (手艺). He builds model ships inside old bottles.
Gordon loves ships. His interest in them began many years ago when he visited a museum in Ottawa, Canada. There was a show of model ships in bottles. Gordon thought the show was wonderful. But he wondered how the craftsman got the ship through the thin neck of the bottle. Gordon decided to find it out.
He found an old master craftsman who was willing to teach him the necessary skills. First, Gordon takes an old bottle. Then he puts in a layer of putty (一层油灰), shapes, paints and makes it look like the sea. Next he builds the ship. To get the ship through the thin neck of the bottle, Gordon has to carefully hold down the masts (桅杆). This step needs special skills. When the ship is inside the bottle, he uses a long, thin tool to raise the masts.
Gordon has completed well over one hundred models. His wish is to build bigger model ships, such as aircraft carriers. This will be more challenging (富于挑战性的), as he will have to build the ship actually inside the bottle. Do you know how many ants there are on earth Some scientists certainly do. In a new study, they estimated (估计) the number of the world’s ants is about 20,000,000,000,000,000! If you put all these ants together, they’d weigh over all the wild birds and mammals (哺乳动物) on earth.
How did they count such a big number In the past, many scientists counted ants in different areas. They collected fallen leaves and earth and dried them to force (强迫) the ants to come out for counting. According to Wang Runxi, one of the members, the number and distribution (分布) of ants can be a predictor (预测器) of environmental changes.
“Ants play an important role in the ecosystem,” Wang told Science and Technology Daily. “They help soften the soil, spread seeds, break down things and form a part of the food chain. They are everywhere except the coldest pared with big animals, little ants are more sensitive (敏感的) to environmental changes.” Most ants live in warm areas. But in recent years, ants have been moving towards the coldest places because of global warming (全球变暖). Changes in forests, such as too much tree-cutting, also affect the number of ants, the study showed.
“Our global map of ants allows us to better understand and predict ants’ responses (反应) to environmental changes,” the scientists wrote in the study.

If you want to spend less time looking at screens, taking up a new hobby can help you. Here’s some helpful advice for you.
Some people feel stressed about choosing a hobby. They want to find the perfect one to spend their free time, but this idea is wrong. Sarah Pressman, a scientist, says there’s no perfect hobby. You just need to ask yourself, “What would make me happy today ” Remember, a hobby doesn’t need to take a long time. Even 5 to 10 minutes of a fun activity can make you feel good.
How do you find a hobby Pressman says you can try different activities for a short time and see how you feel. It’s like trying on new clothes. You need to try on a few to find what you like. Think about choosing one in your life. If you want more energy, try a new kind of exercise. If you enjoy teamwork, join a club. If you want to be creative, try writing or painting.
Changing your habits can be difficult. If you always watch TV or play on the phone in the evening, it may be hard to stop. So make a plan for your new hobby. For example, you can read for 20 minutes before bed. If it’s easy to start a hobby, you’ll do it more often.

Beneath the wide, white surface of the Antarctic ice sheet there is a strange new world: lakes under the ice. The biggest one is Lake Vostok (沃斯托克湖). It has been shut under about four kilometres of ice for maybe 20 million years. The thick ice keeps the lake in total darkness, far away from the world above. ▲
Getting to the lake and studying it, however, is hard work for scientists. The most important job is to keep the lake’s old, clean water safe from dirt. Scientists use special hot drills that make a small hole through the hard ice. They follow strict rules to keep everything clean. They take small bottles of water and mud from the lake and make sure nothing from the outside gets in. Then they look for signs of life, hoping to find tiny living things called “extremophiles (极端微生物)” that can live where most other things would die.
If life is found in Lake Vostok, it would be big news for more than just our planet. This cold, dark and closed place is a lot like what scientists think may exist on icy moons in space. For example, Jupiter’s moon (木卫二) Europa may have large oceans under its ice. If life can live in Lake Vostok after millions of years of isolation, it gives scientists a stronger reason to think that life might also live in the hidden oceans of those far-off worlds. In this way, studying this hidden lake on Earth helps us get ready to look for life in space.

①There is a famous expression in English “Stop the world, I want to get off!” This expression is actually about a feeling of stress, which makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing. Why not try to relax “Stress” means pressure. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental health problems.
②There are plenty of physical effects of stress. Stress can affect the heart. It can make the heart beat faster or miss beats, and can also cause high blood pressure. Stress can cause a person to breathe too fast and can also result in stomach hurts and digesting (消化) problems. These are a few examples of illnesses resulting from stress.
③Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People who have too much stress often feel worried and tired. When people are under stress, they often overreact (反应过度) to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may shout at a child for dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make people angry or nervous easily.
④Long-term stress can lead to different kinds of serious mental illnesses. Depression (抑郁), a terrible feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress. Being unable to sleep well are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress continues, then one’s mental health is at risk.

Have you ever dreamed of travelling all the way over the rainbow Well, it’s easier than you think. All you need to do is to book a plane ticket to Rainbow Mountain in Peru (秘鲁).
Rainbow Mountain is a beautiful natural wonder. It lies in the Andes in Cusco (库斯科的安第斯山脉). As its name suggests, the mountain has different colours.
But why is it in yellow, green, red and purple The reason is the ice that covered the area centuries ago. When it started to melt(融化), the water mixed with the minerals (矿物质) in the ground and turned the earth into many colours.
If you plan your trip to the mountain, try to go during warmer months when there is less rain or snow. Rain or snow makes the climbing more difficult and the colours will look less beautiful. The best time is from March to November, when there are blue skies and pleasant weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or evening, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny days may make you not take nice photos.
To get to Rainbow Mountain, you should first travel to Cusco—a province in the south of Peru. Then you can take a drive to Qesoyuno. From there you can start the journey on foot. It takes about a two-or-three hour walk to the top. This is really the best way, but the trip is very difficult. Because the mountain sits at a very high altitude (海拔) about 5,200 metres above sea level, so bring enough water and take your time.

When we talk about engineers, we think of people who make machines, like cars. But are there engineers in nature Yes! Some animals or plants can change their home in a big way. We call them ecosystem engineers.
Beavers are a great example of ecosystem engineers! They use their strong teeth to bite trees until the trees fall down, then they build dams (坝) with branches and stones in the water. The dams create small lakes and wetlands. These new areas become home to fish, insects, birds and many other animals. The areas also help to keep the whole ecosystem healthy and balanced. Beavers don’t do the building work for others—they’re just building their own safe homes. But they create living spaces for other wildlife by accident. Isn’t that amazing
Plants can be engineers too. In the San Francisco Estuary, the USA, a plant called Brazilian waterweed (水草) is an important one. The leaves and stems of this waterweed can slow down the water. They can also catch tiny things. This makes the water clearer. Clearer water lets more sunlight in, so some fish can see things easily. And sunlight helps water plants grow more. These plants offer the small fish places to hide.
Ecosystem engineers can have a great influence on their home. It shows how all living things in an ecosystem are connected!

It was a summer day when I was about 13. Dad took me to visit the Shanghai Natural History Museum. Back then, it was in an old building on Yan’an Road.
Dad used to work at a seafood processing factory. As we walked past the fish specimens, he was excited to share his knowledge. “This fish sells fast,” he told me. “It tastes great.” The other visitors turned to stare (盯着) at us as we walked on.
But when we were back in the hall to see the dinosaurs carefully, Dad was silent. Clearly, these giants couldn’t be eaten. (If they were still alive, we might be on their menu!) The star exhibit was a Mamenchisaurus (马门溪龙). It stood 22 meters tall and held its long neck high. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Many questions raced through my mind: What did it do all day How much did it eat What was our planet like when it was alive And why did it—and all the other dinosaurs—disappear
In 2015, the Natural History Museum moved to Jing’an. To celebrate the tenth birthday of its new home, it’s hosting a special dinosaur exhibition where you can see a Mamenchisaurus. But it’s a little different from the one I saw in the old museum. Over time, scientists have learned more about these dinosaurs. Now they believe they couldn’t hold up their long necks very high.
There are still many unknowns about these ancient animals. We keep guessing and piecing together the puzzle. As we learn about their world, we also learn more about our own. Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for about 165 million years. Will humans ever break this record

Exchange trips aren’t just about traveling—they’re about growing and making connections! Many students in our school joined international exchange trips last term. Four students shared their experiences and feelings about that.
893 TomMy exchange school in Australia had super lively classes! Teachers let us do group discussions without raising hands. I was shy at first, but my classmates invited me to share ideas about our favorite movies. I learned that class doesn’t have to be quiet—speaking up bravely helps us learn more.
1021 LilyI stayed with a British host family. At first, I felt weird—their breakfast was toast and milk (no congee like at home!). But I taught my host mom to make fried rice, and she showed me how to bake chocolate cookies. We also talked about Spring Festival and Christmas. This trip let me see that different cultures can get along well through small, warm moments.
