Vidal first experienced Brazil’s carnival celebrations as a baby living in Salvador, the
capital of Bahia State. Before he was even one year old, his mother took him to his first carnival event.
The cultural traditions of Salvador have stuck with him. And, Vidal, a trained musician, now performs the typical music of Bahia in the US. He often plays in the Washington area.
February is the carnival season in Brazil and other countries around the world. Even the
Washington area celebrates the season. Last week, Vidal and other musicians performed here for a carnival celebration. Performing in Washington and other US cities has helped Vidal stay close to his Brazilian roots (根).
“Living in the US now and not being able to enjoy carnival as I used to in Brazil with my friends and family is really heartbreaking. And that was the reason why I decided to start making my own events — carnival parties —just to get connected to my roots, and to my happiness.”
It may come as a surprise, but Washington is said to have one of the largest followings for Brazilian culture in the US. This year alone, there are more than twelve carnival celebrations in
the Washington area. Here, the season isn’t celebrated on city streets as in Brazil, where it is warm summer. February is one of Washington’s coldest months, so the events take place at theatres,
restaurants and other places.
Carnival is one of the world’s biggest celebrations. In many countries, activities take place for a few weeks each year and include huge parades (游行) and street parties with live music.
Carnival goers wear colourful, themed clothing and masks.

B .Most people are afraid of the problem of safety.
C .Young people can’t accept the form of carnival.
D .Americans prefer to have different forms of carnival.

A special event for an exhibition (展览) in London tracking the development of Chinese
characters and their role in cultural exchange between China and the West began on Saturday at a gallery in London. The event combined historical shows with modern design and discussions
between invited scholars and guests.
Titled “Hanzi of the West, Letters of the East,” the exhibition includes more than 100
works inspired by hanzi. The exhibition is designed as a step-by-step story that uses Chinese
characters as a line to tell stories about China and about cultural experiences between China and Britain.
“The theme title invites us to see Chinese characters and alphabetic (字母的) letters not as opposites, but as ‘friends’; two different systems that both record sound, shape meaning and
express emotion,” said Wu Yun, dean of the School of Foreign Studies at Tongji University.
One part of the exhibition explores how artists and designers use hanzi as a source of look and a starting point for their creations. It shows pieces that bring fresh meanings to the brush lines, the pieces that form the characters, and how they are built, through book designs, fashion, art
exhibits and creative cultural products. Another section tracks the early spread of hanzi to the West and the pre-20th century efforts to systematize Chinese early printing methods.
Explanatory boards and visual timelines in the exhibition set out the development of
Chinese characters from their early origins through how they changed over time. Visitors can follow how the script (笔迹) has shifted in form and use over centuries, while seeing how it continues to inspire design today.
Yukteshwar Kumar, a scholar at the University of Bath, said learning Chinese had shown him how much meaning is hidden within every character. “For me, the process of learning
Chinese has been amazing, because every character has a story, and an exhibition like this helps people in Britain and China understand each other better, and that makes it very meaningful,” he
said in fluent Chinese.
8 .What is the main feature of the London exhibition event
A .Focusing on traditional artworks.
B .Using advanced modern technology.
C .Inviting artists to create work on the spot.
D .Discussing cultural exchanges through characters.
9 .What can be known from Wu’s words
A.Hanzi and letters share one origin.
B .Western letters heavily influenced hanzi.
C.Hanzi and letters are not totally separate.
D .Characters can express special meanings.
10 .What does the underlined word “shifted” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A .Changed. B .Protected. C .Spread. D .Described.
11 .What does Yukteshwar Kumar think of the exhibition
A .It is hard to understand for the British.
B .It helps deepen China-UK understanding.
C .It lacks enough character story shows.
D .It is worthwhile to further explore its hidden meanings.

When Marie Benton first moved to London in 2008, joining a choir helped her settle in. To comfort and boost confidence for people in trouble, she hung posters in local hostels advertising “a choir with no name (yet)”, and it was an immediate success. Thus was officially born The
Choir with No Name (TCWNN), which now boasts seven choirs across multiple cities to support those affected by homelessness and exclusion.
Studies have documented the close link between homelessness and poor mental health. A 2022 report revealed homeless people experience worse physical and mental health than the
general population. Fortunately, research in Psychology of Music found choir participation
improves positive emotions, with 88% of people seeing mental health improvements and 78% reporting reduced stress and anxiety.
Frequently excluded and often ignored, homeless people are often isolated. “Our choirs aim to do the opposite, where everyone is seen and heard,” says TCWNN’s CEO Dr. Kate Wareham.
Unlike other groups, TCWNN is free to join, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds
and musical abilities, with no pre-registration, audition or regular commitment. Rehearsals (彩排) start with a chat, followed by 90 minutes of group singing and a hot meal afterward. The choir
directors are teaching group singing in a way that ensures everyone is supported to grow both personally and musically.
Dan, who has been in the choir since 2015, says his life has been transformed. Forced to
leave his family home and living in a hostel, he had withdrawn from the world. Weekly rehearsals gave him a routine among the chaos, providing hope during darkness. “When I joined, I was at the bottom of the ladder; choir was the start of climbing up, and, slowly but surely, I got to where I
am today — a confident and outgoing person.” he says. Now Dan has his own flat and rebuilds family relationships.
12 .Why did Marie Benton start TCWNN
A .To uplift people experiencing hardships. B .To help herself settle in London quickly.
C .To help with the promotion of local hostels. D .To establish a choir network across the UK.
13 .What does the research in Psychology of Music show
A .The growing popularity of singing activities. B .The poor physical health of homeless people.
C .The positive effects of choir on mental health. D .The link between homelessness and mental health.
14 .What does TCWNN feature
A .Required registration. B .Easy access for everyone.
C .High attendance demands. D .Strict musical ability standards.
15 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .Where Every Voice Matters B .How Music Heals Inner Wounds
C .Why Singing Brings Stress Relief D .What Science Says About Choirs

Finally, traditional festivals are a source of national pride and help shape our sense of
national identity (身份,同一性). For example, we celebrate the Hanshi Festival and the Laba Festival with unique customs, and these shared experiences bring us together as a people (民族).
19
Traditional festivals have been passed down to us from previous generations. 20

One day after school, my younger brother Alan called out to me, “David! Come here
quickly! I have something to show you!” To my surprise, he had brought home an injured bird. I was immediately attracted by its bright blue feathers. For some reason, I named the bird “Robin” in my mind, and I readily agreed with my brother’s choice.
Alan told me that Robin had fallen from a tree, hitting the ground and hurting its wings. A group of kids surrounded the injured bird, unsure of what to do. Alan quickly stepped in and
brought it home. Robin was scared and nervous, and I could feel its trembling body as I held it in my hands. We took it to the vet, where it got timely treatment.
Following the doctor’s instructions, we took great care of Robin. Gradually, it became calm and started to sense our kindness.
Since we didn’t have a birdcage, I decided to make one myself. I was fairly good at art, so I found a cardboard box, cut out four windows, and used wooden sticks as bars. Once it was done, I carefully placed Robin inside its new shelter. It took him two days to get used to his new
surroundings.
Our dog, Max, had always been a sweetheart, but he became increasingly excited. He
would circle the box and sometimes bark at it in a playful way. I realized he wasn’t trying to scare Robin; instead, he seemed interested in his new feathered friend and eager to play with him in his own way.
About two months later, Robin made a full recovery. To provide Robin with a comfortable living environment, my father bought a bright birdcage. However, I noticed that Robin kept trying to
escape from the cage and cried frequently. Alan mentioned that he sensed Robin was lonely and missed his family. This made me realize that it was time to send him home to nature.注意:

Dear fellow students,
Good morning. I’m Li Hua from Grade 10. It’s my great honor to give a speech on “How to
Use the Internet Wisely”.
The Internet brings much convenience to our study and life. We can search for learning materials, keep in touch with friends and know the world easily.
While the Internet is beneficial, we must use it properly. I once wasted too much time on online games and did poorly in my studies. So we should control screen time, use the Internet mainly for study, and check online information carefully.
Let’s make the Internet a helpful tool instead of a distraction.
Thank you.

After some discussions, Alan and I decided to set Robin free. We chose a sunny morning, taking the birdcage to the big oak tree where Alan first found Robin. As we approached the spot, memories of rescuing Robin flooded back, making the moment even more meaningful. I gently
opened the cage door, my heart a little sad but happy for it. Alan stroked Robin’s blue feathers
softly, whispering that it could come back to visit us anytime. Robin hopped to the cage entrance, looked at us for a moment, as if expressing its gratitude, and we could tell it was ready for this
new journey.
With a sudden burst of energy, Robin took off into the sky. It circled above us twice, its
bright blue feathers shining in the sun, as if showing off its newfound freedom. Max wagged his
tail and barked gently, as if saying goodbye, and we could see the connection between all living
beings at that moment. Alan and I waved our hands, watching it fly farther and farther until it
disappeared into the forest. Though we felt a bit empty, we knew we did the right thing — nature
is always Robin’s true home, and we were glad to have been a part of its story.
