Why should mankind explore space Why should money, time and effort be spent
exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth These are questions that,
understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup (基因构成) as human beings. What
drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and
environments The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in
surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential (潜在的) resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives.
We have already benefited from other unexpected benefits including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communication systems. Even non-stick
pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副产品) of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space
allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or
how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to
survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans
would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.
4 .Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1
A .To express his doubts.
B .To compare different ideas.
C .To introduce points for discussion.
D .To describe the conditions on Earth.
5 .What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2
A .Humans are nature-born to do so.
B .Humans have the tendency to fight.
C .Humans may find new sources of food.
D .Humans don’t like to stay in the same place.
6 .What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets
A .Our genetic makeup.
B .Resources on the earth.
C .The adaptive ability of humans.
D .By-products in space exploration.
7 .Which of the statements can best sum up the passage
A .Space exploration has created many wonders.
B .Space exploration provides the best value for money.
C .Space exploration can benefit science and technology.
D .Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.

The annual Redhead Days Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands, drew thousands of red-haired people from around the world in August, 2023. The three-day event is a celebration of red hair, a feature only shared by only 1%-2% of the global population. And although redheads can be found all over the world, the numbers are higher for people from the north of Europe, where the rate (比率) is between 2% and 6%.
For many attendees, like 30-year-old Scottish Liam Hunter, the festival is an opportunity to
feel a sense of belonging and self-acceptance. Hunter, who has experienced bullying (霸凌) due to his hair color, expressed a sense of satisfaction and unity at the event. “I don’t feel alone anymore. I feel together, a part of something,” he said.
The event, which attracted about 5, 000 redheads from various countries, offered a range of activities including painting workshops, make-up and skincare knowledge, photo shoots, musical performances, and speed-meet events.
Interestingly, the festival’s start was somewhat accidental. Bart Rouwenhorst, an artist and the event’s organizer, placed an advertisement in the local newspaper in 2005 seeking 15 red-
haired models for a painting project. Surprisingly, he received responses from 150 individuals.
Although Rouwenhorst is not a redhead himself, he decided to organize a group photo with all the respondents. The gathering got much attention and was considered a success, leading the
organizers to establish it as an annual event.
Now the festival serves as a special stage for redheads to celebrate their differences, develop a sense of community, and raise awareness about the challenges they face, such as bullying and increased sensitivity (过敏) to the sun. It also provides an opportunity for
non-redheads to learn about and appreciate the uniqueness of red hair.
8 .What can we learn from the first paragraph
A .Redheads celebrate their festival with various activities.
B .Red hair is a common disease among the global population.
C .The Redhead Days Festival is celebrated around the world.
D .Population in northern Europe has a higher rate of redheads.
9 .What does Hunter’s experience tell us
A .The redheads enjoy a high social position. B .The redheads take pride in their difference.
C .The redheads face discrimination sometimes.D .The redheads have trouble keeping up with others.
10 .What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A .The origin of the festival. B .The popularity of the festival.
C .Customs during the festival. D .Activities during the festival.
11 .Which of the following can best describe the event
A .Challenging. B .Informal. C .Remarkable. D .Meaningless.
D
Horses are certainly a marvel (奇异的事物) of creation. They are extremely strong and
interact (互动) with their environment through their pared to us, they see better, hear better, have a better sense of smell, and can feel the smallest insect on their bodies. They have
survived by using their senses to get away from danger for centuries.
Hearing
Riding animals have excellent hearing, better than that of humans. Horses’ ears rotate (转
动) 180 degrees and generally face the direction the animal is looking. They can focus one eye and ear on the rider and one eye and ear on something else. When they hear something, horses want to see the cause. Noise created by traffic, wind, and other distractions (分心的事物) can greatly
affect their hearing, and cause horses to become skittish. Riding animals in more complex
environments become used to disturbing noises after repeated exposure to (暴露于) them.
Vehicles backfiring, gunfire, helicopters, trains and mechanical equipment can be tolerated by riding animals that are accustomed to (习惯于) them. Horses that spend time in rural areas get used to noises there, such as the sounds of farm animals or forest activities. However, all these sounds and many others can startle (使惊吓) riding animals unfamiliar with them, making it difficult for riders to keep control.
Smell
Horses have an excellent sense of smell, much better than that of humans. They may use
smell to find their way back. They readily smell other animals, and they can tell differences in the smell of water. Most horses are happy to drink muddy water from a puddle (水坑) because it has a natural smell, but they may refuse to drink from an unfamiliar source. Many riders travel with an old water bucket so their horses will welcome water in the campground.
Touch
Horses are so sensitive to touch that they can feel a fly land on a single hair. Slight pressure from a rider’s legs can guide a horse forward and anything touching its body hair can alert (使警觉) the animal to trouble. If a horse brushes up against a narrow passage and feels trapped, its
survival nature kicks in. Sharp objects easily cut or damage the relatively tender skin of a horse and painful or sharp impacts cause a horse to run away from the offending object, potentially
injuring itself or others.
Curiosity
Some horses are exceptionally daring. Their curiosity leads them to explore anything new
in their environment. They smell, push, move, pick up, or play with new objects within their
reach. They may pull things into a corral (畜栏) with their teeth or kneel to reach underneath
fences for something they want. Depending on the design of the fence or barrier and the size of the animal, horses may be able to reach 6 feet beyond its edge.

A .their horses prefer to drink from a puddle
B .there isn’t enough water in the campground
C .their horses need a familiar smell to find their way back
D .water with a familiar smell is welcomed by their horses
14 .How will horses do when they are curious about something outside their fences
A .They focus their eyes on the thing.

D .They struggle to get out of their fences.
15 .What’s the best title for the passage

I still remember what I felt on a bright Saturday morning in late September, at a
five-kilometer race in Clarkston, Georgia.
It was an unusual morning. About an hour earlier, when we drove into town to participate in the race, my 11-year-old son noticed a green tree cricket(蟋蟀) on my car. It was friendly, no longer than a fingernail. It jumped onto my son’s finger, and walked across my shirt, and then
went back to my son’s hand, where it stayed so long that we eventually gave it a name: Little Friend.
The walk from the car to the registration table was perhaps a quarter of a mile. Little Friend stayed with my son. Then, we walked back across the railroad tracks and waited for the race to
start. A few minutes before the race, Little Friend either fell or jumped off my son’s hand and
landed on the sidewalk. Maybe it wanted to go free. But this was not a good place for that.
Pedestrian(行人)traffic was heavy, so Little Friend was in danger. My son knelt and reached out his hand. It came back.
The race was about to start, and the tiny green insect was in for a wild ride. My son would run fast, and the race would be long. The race began. I ran well enough, and felt excited at the
finish line. But that thrill gave way to anxiety when my son didn’t show up.
I knew he could run 5 kilometers in about 30 minutes. When I didn’t see him at the
35-minute mark, I began to wonder what had gone wrong. And as the 40-minute mark approached and he still didn’t appear, I went out looking for him. Had he got lost I crossed the railroad tracks and looked down a long straightaway, hoping to see his face. Finally, there he was, just ahead of the 45-minute mark.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Little Friend was riding proudly on one finger of my son’s right hand.
Smiling, we walked back to the car with Little Friend.

根据第二段中“Noise created by traffic, wind, and other distractions can greatly affect their hearing, and cause horses to become skittish.(交通、风和其他干扰产生的噪音会极大地影响它们的听力,导致马变得 skittish)” 以及其后“However, all these sounds and many others can startle riding animals unfamiliar with them, making it difficult for riders to keep control.(然而,所有这些声音以及许多其他声音会惊吓到不熟悉它们的骑乘动物,使骑手难以控制)”可知,噪音影响马的听力并致使它们出现的这种状态与“受惊的”相关,进而导致骑手难以控制,由此推测“skittish”意为“受惊的;易受惊的” ,与 A 选项“frightened”意思相符。
Most horses are happy to drink muddy water from a puddle
because it has a natural smell, but they may refuse to drink from an unfamiliar source. Many riders travel with an old water bucket so their horses will welcome water in the campground.(大多数马 乐意喝来自水坑的泥水,因为它有一种自然的气味,但它们可能会拒绝从不熟悉的水源喝水。
Their curiosity leads them to explore anything new in their
environment. They may pull things into a corral with their teeth or kneel to reach underneath
fences for something they want. Depending on the design of the fence or barrier and the size of the animal, horses may be able to reach 6 feet beyond its edge.(它们的好奇心驱使它们探索周围环境中的任何新事物。
根据第一段“Horses are certainly a marvel (奇异的事物) of creation. They are extremely strong and interact (互动) with their environment through their pared to us, they see better, hear better, have a better sense of smell, and can feel the smallest insect on their
bodies. They have survived by using their senses to get away from danger for centuries.(马无疑是大自然造物的一大奇物。

47 .Little Friend was riding proudly on one finger of my son’s right hand. It was like a very small captain on a very big ship. My predictions had been wrong. My son hadn’t run fast. He blamed a
cold he was getting over. However, I knew the real reason. While he was running, his arms would swing, and Little Friend would be bounced and eventually fall to the ground, which would
certainly put its life in danger. So my son had to slow down his running speed to protect it. But I
didn’t question him too much about it. I think there’s more than one way to win a race.
Smiling, we walked back to the car with Little Friend. My son carefully found some bushes in the parking lot which seemed like a good place for him to drop off Little Friend. He seemed lost and unwilling to give up on Little Friend. But he knew their brief and intense friendship had to run its course. “Be free,” my son said, and gently pushed Little Friend. It took some more pushes, and Little Friend finally sprang from his finger and jumped downward, its bright green body integrated with the dark green bushes. The small creature went out of sight and sought its freedom.
