I was once a captive of my smartphone. My eyes were fixed on the little screen whenever I walked down the street, had dinner with friends or lay in bed at night. Sometimes I had the uncomfortable feeling that this little machine had taken up too much of my time, and that I could have done something more meaningful than just looking at a tiny screen all day.
Then the day came when I finally realized I had to make a change. Head down, eyes on my smartphone, I stepped into the road and a car shot past, nearly knocking me off my feet! At that very moment, I made up my mind to spend a whole week without my smartphone.
The first day was the hardest. I found myself at a loss, unsure of how to occupy my time. Then somehow I began to feel free. I finally picked up the classic novel I had always wanted to read and kept a journal of my feelings, thoughts and daily activities to see how much progress I was making. Best of all I began to appreciate the beauty in life with my own eyes, instead of through my smartphone camera.
My offline relationships benefited as well. I went for a long walk with an old friend. Our wide-ranging conversation went so much deeper than brief texts ever could. I also made sure to spend more time with my parents. We went to the opera, played badminton, and visited museums. We had never felt closer to each other.
By the end of the week, I almost did not want to turn my phone back on. Those seven days have given me a great appreciation for life beyond the screen. I cannot escape from the modern world, but I can cut back on the amount of time I spend on my smartphone every day, and I do.

A. Free but unrewarding. B. Confused and unsatisfied.
C. Challenging but beneficial. D. Enjoyable and adventurous.
27. Which is the possible title of this text
A. Smartphone No way! B. Smartphone: A Smart Choice
C. The Smartphone is My Friend. D. How Should We Live Without a Smartphone.

Experts are warning about the risks of extreme picky (挑剔的) eating after a teenager living on a diet of chips and crisps developed lasting sight loss. Eye doctors in Bristol cared for the 17-year-old boy after his sight had gone to the point of blindness. Tests showed he had serious vitamin deficiency (缺乏). Dr. Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said, “His diet was basically a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on crisps and sometimes white bread and ham, and not really any fruit and vegetables.”
The teenager saw his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet. Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss.
He was not overweight or underweight, but he had lost minerals from his bones, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age. In terms of his sight loss, he met the standards of being blind. “He had blind spots right in the middle of his sight,” said Dr. Denize Atan. “That means he can’t drive and would find it really arduous to read, watch TV or recognize faces.”
Dr. Denize Atan said that parents should learn about the harm that can be caused by picky eating, and turn to experts for help. For those who are concerned, she advised, “It’s best not to be anxious about picky eating, and instead calmly introduce one or two new foods with every meal.” She said multivitamin tablets can supplement (补充) a diet, but cannot take the place of eating healthily. “It’s much better to take in vitamins through a varied and balanced diet.” she said. “Too many certain vitamins, including vitamin A, can be harmful, so you don’t want to overdo it.”
28. What does Dr. Denize Atan mean in paragraph 1
A. The cause of the boy’s disease was unknown.
B. Fruit and vegetables are not rich in vitamins.
C. Picky eating is common among teenagers.
D. The diet of the boy was not balanced.
29. Why did the boy go to see his doctor at the age of 14
A. To improve his poor diet. B. To be treated for his discomfort.
C. To get some help to lose weight. D. To slow down his progressive sight loss.
30. What does the underlined word “arduous” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Important. B. Interesting. C. Necessary. D. Difficult.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Reasons why the boy is seriously ill.
B. Suggestions for the boy’s family to care for him.
C. Advice for parents worried about picky eating.
D. Ways of taking in enough vitamins and minerals.

U. S. teens spend more than eight hours a day on screens, and there’s growing concern over it. Now, a new study published by the American Psychological (心理的) Association, confirms that teens seem to feel better about themselves when they cut back.
“Social media can feel like a comparison trap (陷阱),” says study author Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University. Her research found that limiting screen time to about one hour a day helped anxious teens and young adults feel better about their body image and their appearance. “What I noticed in social media was that I couldn’t help but compare myself.” Thai says. Reading posts from famous people and influencers, as well as people in her own social network, led to a lack of self-confidence.
So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reducing time on social media would improve body image. They gathered a few hundred volunteers, aged 17-25. all of whom had experienced symptoms (症状) of anxiety or depression — which could make them easily influenced by social media. Half of the volunteers were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media with no limits.
The researchers gave the volunteers surveys at the beginning and end of the study, including statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.” Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-point scale. The change may seem small, but any change in such a short period of time is worth noticing.
“It’s encouraging that college students were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks,” psychologist Andrea Graham says. While this study included people with symptoms of anxiety or depression, Graham says it’s worth applying this approach to other groups, such as people with eating problems.
32. What is the probable meaning of the underlined sentence in para 2
A. Teens are forced to post their own images on social media
B. Teens couldn’t help but spend too much time on social media
C. Teens tends to compare themselves with others on social media
D. Teens are fooled into believing false information on social media
33. How was the research conducted by Thai and a team of researchers
A. By listing numbers B. By giving examples
C. By making comparisons D. By analyzing causes and effects
34. What can we learn about the survey
A. The study included people with mental health and eating problems
B. There was little difference in appearance score between the two groups
C. College students were not willing to reduce screen time for more weeks
D. Cutting social media use makes a difference to teens’ opinion of their image
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage
A. Less screen time, more self-confidence B. Social media, a time bomb on your health
C. How to improve your image on social media D. Concern over social media addiction keeps growing

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

【答案】 As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.
