Lesson 3 Getting to the Top
1.Theme: Human and Self
2. Analysis of the Text:
What: The reading text in this lesson is a blog of a professional Olympic triathlete, who has given up so much in life to get to the top. Her blog uses a first-person perspective to introduce the obstacles she has to overcome. Her main point is that she was born with an enormous amount of drive and determination and that is why she chose to make these sacrifices. Anyone who is striving for greatness has to sacrifice a balanced life, which sets him apart from the rest of ordinary people.
Why: Based on the reading text, this period aims to guide students to enrich their language on achieving extraordinary success and explore the dilemma of maintaining a common life of doing that extra bit to get to the top. Students are expected to not only find the examples of sacrifices the
writer has made. Meanwhile, students are expected to reflect on their own life.
How: The reading belongs to a blog that consists of eight paragraphs. The first paragraph introduces the fact that the writer was not understood by her friends. The second paragraph believes that it is hard to push herself to the limit. The third paragraph talks about the questions deep inside her heart. The fourth paragraph describes the list of occasions
where she chose to prioritize her career. The fifth paragraph gives reason why she pursues her life. The sixth paragraph talks about the little extra things that set one apart from his careers. The seventh paragraph quotes a triathlete’s saying that doing too much is necessary to achieve outstanding results.. The last paragraph summarizes the point that anyone who strives for greatness is willing to do that extra little bit to get to the top.
3. Teaching Objectives and Core Literacy:
By the end of the class, students will be able to:
(1) Master target vocabulary and knowledge
(2) Describe the problems the author faces as a triathlete
(3) Summarize the reasons why the author gets to the top
(4) Evaluate the author’s choices and express their opinions

(1) Analyze and summarize the reasons why the author succeeds.
(2) Express their own opinions about the author’s final choice.

6. Teaching Procedure:
Activate and Share(5mins):
Step 1: Ask students to enjoy a short video about the performance of Quan Hongchan
Step2: Show a group of photos about athletes and then invite some of the
students to talk about the reasons why these athletes succeeded in their field.
(Purposes: To activate students’ related knowledge and arouse their interest)
Read and Explore:
Step3: Ask students to guess the meaning of triathlete and predict the main idea according to the title.(4mins)
Step4: Ask students to skim the article and try to match every part with its main idea then check our predictions(6mins)
Para1-4: The situations she faces
Para5-6: The reasons why she succeeds
Para7-8: Her final choice
(Purposes: To develop students’ prediction skills as well as the reading ability of skimming.)
Step5: Read the first part carefully and then figure out what sacrifices she

(Purposes: To analyze the dilemma the author faces and be able to summarize the reasons for the writer’s achievement)

Divide the students into 2 groups and let them discuss: If you were the author, what kind of life would you choose
(Purposes: To Develop students’ spirits of cooperation and thinking capacity. Meanwhile, students are able to deeply understand the true meaning of extra hard work)
Homework:
Compulsory Homework: Make a poster to introduce your favourite athlete’s road to success
Optional Homework: Design a slogan for your favourite athlete
(Purposes: To help students internalize what they have learnt and develop their creativity)
