The text aims at showing some common problems, enabling students to know the negative effects and solutions.
学情分析 Stepping into the second year of high school, students have improved their reading and learning ability, and can read for details in the text and to understand the main idea. The topic of this text is close to their real life. They have similar experiences of traffic problems, so it’s easy for them to understand the text. They have developed an awareness of protecting the environment, so they can think of solutions to these problems.
教学目标 After this class, students will: 1. learn about traffic problems in Britain and solutions to solve them. 2. develop their ability to read for details and their understanding of expository writing. 3. increase the awareness of protecting the environment and low- carbon commuting.

Activate and Share Look at pictures and a video of traffic jams and discuss the feelings. Show students pictures of traffic jams and a video of the worst one in the world. After that, ask them about their feelings in a traffic jam, using the sentence pattern “I feel … when I get stuck in traffic jams.” Look at the pictures and watch the video. Fill adjectives in the blank to complete the sentence and describe the feelings. Use ppt to show pictures and let students experience the traffic jams to talk about their feelings. 3min
Read and Explore The details in part 1, including the number of cars, the increase in the last 20 years, deaths in vehicle accidents, and deaths caused by air pollution. Let students read part one quickly to find the figures about traffic problems in Britain and complete the chart. Read part1. Complete the chart. Use PPT to show the chart. When checking together, show the answer as students try to find the answer. 4min

Ask students about the text type of this passage. Then analyze the structure of this text and how to conduct an expository writing about social problems. Let students think of how to understand the title “The Road to Destruction”. Then analyze the title together. Analyze the text type and structure of the passage. Pair Work Make clear that the author knows the negative effects of cars and what he should do, but still cannot give up his car.
