Did you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar If you have a wide vocabulary, you can communicate successfully 11 the grammar is not perfect.
However, one 12 problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Why does this often happen The main 13 is that most students learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not 14 if you don’t have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words well is to learn new words and use them 15 . You can do this with a very easy exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than 16 reading its meaning. You should write the word, the meaning in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
17 you just learn the word “generous”. Write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), meaning—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner; you’re very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous as he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. If your example sentences have 18 to do with your own life, it’s especially good. That can create a 19 connection with the new word. This way, you will remember the word much longer and more easily.
The next day, 20 your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence with the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it. These two easy steps—writing the word and using it right now—help you remember and use the new word.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook If not, start now.

Slides are simple but always fun. All you need to do is climb up to the top and slide down. But did you know that there is science behind this simple playground equipment (设备)
① You climb up the slide and sit down. You are ready to go. Are you sliding down No, not yet. Things stay still (静止) unless something makes them ________. It is Newton’s first law. So you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down. ② Now you are sliding down. Do you feel you are slowing down a bit When two things rub (摩擦) against each other, they cause friction (摩擦力). Without friction, you will slide down faster and faster to the bottom. ③ At the bottom of the slide, you come to a full stop. Your feet touch the ground and add extra friction. Newton’s first law also says moving things keep moving unless something makes them stop. So, if you do not use your feet, you’ll fly off the slide.

In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. But I often used to daydream about going to sea.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to satisfy him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke, I was thinking, “At university, I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor (水手).”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I married my wife, Mary. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventures (冒险) in my life. The captain of a ship that is about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will take, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal.
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First, we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said. “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now very strong, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course (航线)!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

When Albert Einstein was 16, he imagined travelling beside a beam of light. This creative thought played an important role in helping him develop the world-famous theory of relativity (相对论). Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” He even considered daydreaming as “thought experiments”.
Daydreaming allows our minds to think freely about ideas, memories and future plans. It can be imagining space travel, looking forward to a holiday or recalling a happy birthday party. According to Chinese health research, proper daydreaming every day can improve both our health and creativity.
When we face difficulties or stress, daydreaming helps our minds relax and reduces worries and fears. For example, practising speaking in class in our imagination can make us feel calmer. It also encourages creativity and lets us explore a world without limits. Guo Qiang, an expert (专家) in thoughts and feelings, suggests that everyone should take time to daydream, as it can greatly shape our feelings in a positive (积极的) way.
However, we should not daydream when we need to focus (集中注意力), such as during lessons or crossing the road. We can do it while walking or brushing our teeth, starting with happy memories or imagining future successes. Research shows that people often find better solutions (解决方法) after a short break. So next time you have problems with homework, stop for a moment and let your daydreams bring you new ideas.
27.The writer uses Einstein’s story at the beginning to _________.

Widely considered as one of China’s most ancient games, Go (围棋) has been practiced for over 4,000 years. During the Jin Dynasty, a Buddhist (佛教的) master named Zhi Daolin loved to play Go, finding it full of life’s deep wisdom. He thought people could “talk” by placing pieces on the board. 31
Many Go players feel that the game is like real life. Sometimes, a player can move forward quickly. 32 Sometimes, they can directly face the challenger. Other times, they must take a different path. Every Go piece is placed carefully, just like how people solve problems in life. 33 It’s just as one bad decision in life can lead to unexpected results. That is why experienced players always think deeply before making a move.
The purpose of Go is not just to win but also to gain wisdom. Players do not simply try to defeat (打败) each other. 34 Go teaches patience, methods and problem-solving skills to help people know what to do when meeting difficulties. 35 Some even believe that Go can improve a person’s ability to make decisions in the real world.
Go is more than just a game—it is a way to understand life. That is why it has lasted for thousands of years. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, Go always has something to teach.
A.As a result, they just play Go for fun.
B.So he gave Go another name—“hand conversations”.
C.A single mistake in Go may change the whole game.
D.Other times, they must slow down and wait.
E.However, Go is more suitable for those who are impatient.
F.Instead, they work together to create a meaningful game.
G.It also helps people develop a calm mind, which is useful in daily life.

A short game called Grandma suddenly became popular in China. Created by 32-year-old Zhou Yichen, this short game l 46 less than five minutes. Unlike today’s common computer games, the game has no exciting fights, no dramatic music or difficult tasks. H 47 , it deeply touched thousands of players’ hearts.
In the game, you play as a young man looking after your grandma who fell down and got badly hurt. You are r 48 to choose some small actions like sitting with her at the dinner table, helping her go to bed, or taking her out for a walk. Every “yes” leads to a gentle animation (动画)—Grandma slowly walking, smiling, or chatting with her neighbours. The game has no scores, no w 49 or losers. It only shows the most valuable things: love, patience and care.
Every tiny detail in the game comes directly from Zhou’s r 50 life. In 2024, his 95-year-old grandma fell. He returned from New York where he studied art and took care of her. He fed her, helped her clean up and took her outside to enjoy the sun. The work was t 51 , but he never complained. After his grandma passed away, he finally f 52 the game as his way to remember her.
The ending of the game is quiet but moving. Grandma falls asleep n 53 and a bird carries her away. Instead of creating sadness, Zhou just recorded his life. “The game does not bring her b 54 , but it forever keeps our warm memories,” Zhou says softly.
True love is not shown t 55 beautiful words, but hidden in daily small moments. In this busy world, we often forget to slow down and care for the people around us. The game Grandma reminds us to value our family moments.

The Yellow River, known as China’s “Mother River”, is not that yellow in recent years. As China’s second-longest river, it has long been troubled by pollution and too much sand. However, thanks to environmental protection efforts, its water quality has improved greatly. In 2022, for the first time, the main part of the Yellow River reached Class II water quality. This means the water is clean enough for drinking after proper treatment. This high standard has been kept for years.
Numbers show great progress. Since 2018, the percentage of clean water (Class I-III) across the whole river area has gone up from 66.4% to over 90%. At the same time, the dirtiest water (below Class V), which was not fit for any use, is no longer seen. On average, the rate of good water in the area continues to go up every year. These amazing results show the environment of the Yellow River is getting better and better.
This great change did not come easily. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the river faced serious environmental problems. Factory waste, agricultural pollution and household wastewater made the river dirty. Many local fish died out, and the water became unsafe to drink, putting millions of people living along the river in danger.
To save the “Mother River”, our government took many useful steps. Over 17,000 polluted outlets (排污口) were strictly controlled. The Yellow River Protection Law came into effect in 2023, offering the river long-term support. Besides, large projects to stop soil loss were carried out on the Loess Plateau (黄土高原), and water projects like the Xiaolangdi Dam helped reduce sand in the water.
Today, the Yellow River is lively again. Endangered fish have appeared in its waters again, and rare birds like whooper swans now spend winter in the Sanmenxia Reservoir. The “Mother River”, once polluted, is now clear and healthy, bringing hope back to the land and people who depend on it.
The changes to the Yellow River
Improvement in water quality The water in the Yellow River now has much 56 quality. The water is clean enough after it is properly 57 .
Progress in water quality numbers The percentage of clean water (Class I-III) along the whole river has 58 by 23.6% The dirtiest water has already disappeared 59 . The rate of the clean water along the river keeps going up.
