“It’s hopeless,” Scott said. He sat outside his cabin and watched White Fang, who was pulling his chain, snarling angrily. “He is a wolf. We can’t tame him,” Scott added.
“Someone has tamed him,” replied Matt. “Look at those marks on his chest.” He advised Scott to be patient and give White Fang a chance and set him free. Matt picked up a club and went over to White Fang. He opened the chain round White Fang’s neck. The dog couldn’t believe he was free.
“Poor thing,” said Scott. “He needs human kindness.” Scott went into the cabin and returned with some meat. He threw it to White Fang.
However, another dog ran to the meat and tried to take it, White Fang attacked the dog and knocked it down. Matt ran in and started to kick White Fang. Again White Fang attacked Matt and bit his leg.
“I told you it was hopeless,” said Scott, taking out his gun. He was angry and wanted to shoot at the wild dog.
“Look, Scott,” Matt said, “that dog had a terrible time before. You can’t expect him to be normal again at once. Give him some time.”
White Fang watched Scott come over to him, and snarled. He was waiting for his punishment.
But Scott sat down a few meters away and talked to White Fang in a calm, gentle way. He threw meat to the dog many times. Little by little, White Fang became less doubtful.
Scott slowly walked closer and touched White Fang’s head. Instead of hitting him, Scott patted and caressed him gently. White Fang felt both fear and warmth. It was the start of a new life for him.
Love didn’t come quickly. At first, White Fang just helped guard Scott’s things at night. But with kind words and gentle care day after day, White Fang’s hate slowly turned into deep love for his new master.

Have you ever wondered how to boost your chances of winning a game of rock, paper, scissors The two-player game has three basic rules: rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock. Scientists say the best way to win is to be random (随机) and unguessable, and not to pay attention to what has happened in the last round.
To find the secret of success, a team at Western Sydney University, in Australia, studied people’s brain activity during nearly 15,000 games of rock, paper, scissors. There were 31 pairs of players, who each played 480 rounds of the game on a computer. Afterwards, the researchers compared the results of the games with the recorded brain activity for the players.
The results showed that most people had a clear favourite choice to play in the game. More than half of the players preferred to play “rock”. Paper was the next most popular, followed by “scissors”. People also often chose to avoid repeating the same move they’d used in their last round.
The brain analysis found that when people were deciding which move to play, they based it on what happened in the last round. This didn’t work. In fact, using the results of the last round to predict what would happen next made players more likely to lose. The researchers said their study shows that people’s brains struggle to be unguessable. So if you want to raise your chances of winning your next game of rock, paper, scissors, make your decisions as random as possible.
38.What does “boost” mean in Paragraph 1
A. Steal. B. Encourage. C. Raise. D. Create.
39.What is the best advice for you to win
A. Follow three basic rules.
B. Remember what has happened.

D. Try to make your choices as random as possible.

A. heart rates B. brain activity C. eye movements D. talking time
41.What is the main problem for our brains in this game
A. They seem to forget the rules easily.
B. They get tired quickly.
C. They find it hard to be unguessable.
D. They are too slow to act.

Portia was unhappy because she wanted a husband, but her father’s will stopped her from choosing one that she liked. At the same time, it stopped her from refusing one that she did not like. Her father had arranged a kind of guessing game for men who came to court (求婚) his daughter. There were three boxes. Each one had something written on it. Every suitor (求婚者) had to choose a box. Portia’s father thought the right man would understand the meaning of the three boxes and choose the right one. The man who chose the right box could marry Portia, but if a man chose the wrong box, he would never marry anyone at all.
Her first suitor was a Prince from Naples. Portia did not like him because he talked about cats all the time. He didn’t seem to know about anything except cats, and nothing else interested him. Portia did not like cats.
Her second suitor was a Count (伯爵). Portia did not like him because he always looked sad or angry—or both. He never looked happy, and she was afraid that when he got old, he would be a very unhappy husband for her.
Her third suitor was a French Lord (贵族). Portia did not like him because he did not have his own way of thinking. He tried to be just like every person he met. She thought it would be like having twenty husbands, and she couldn’t love him at all.

63.【答案】Dear Nancy,
Thank you so much for your e-mail. I’m very happy to tell you something about the first Yangzhou spring break.
During the break, I did two meaningful things. First, I volunteered at the community garden to plant colorful flowers and clean the park every morning. Second, I read a book about Chinese history with my grandma and listened to her stories about old times. From these activities, I learned that teamwork makes work easier and that family time is the most precious part of life. I really like this spring break. On the one hand, it let me get close to nature and relax from busy schoolwork. On the other hand, it gave me time to do things I love instead of just studying all day.
What do you think of my first spring break Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
