The American writer, Ernest Hemingway, is one of the most famous writers. The Old Man and the Sea is the last great writing in his lifetime. The book first came out in 1952, and then Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature (文学) two years later.
The book tells a story about Santiago, an old Cuban (古巴的) fisherman. The old man doesn’t catch any fish for 84 days. On the 85th day, there comes up a very huge fish. It is much larger than his boat. He has never seen a fish like this. He fights against the fish for days and nights on the sea with little food and water. However, sharks follow the boat. Santiago doesn’t give up and uses the tools to fight with the sharks one by one. But sadly, the fish is eaten up by the sharks at last. He doesn’t bring back a fish but only some fish bones (骨头).
Does it mean that the old man is really a loser I don’t think so. I believe everyone can learn something from him. Everyone has dreams. If you find it difficult to make them come true, will you stop No. You have to go on, just like the old man. So, no matter what difficulties you meet, keep trying like Santiago.

If you always get a headache, you are not alone.
A new report says half of us have headaches. Researchers looked at 357 different reports on headaches from 1961 to 2020. The reports were almost all from rich countries. They included messages on common headaches, migraine (偏头痛) and headaches from tension (紧张). The researchers said that half of people in the report had different kinds of headaches every year. The main researcher, Lars Jacob Stovner, was surprised that the numbers were so big and that so many people got headaches.
The researchers found that women are more likely to get headaches than men. They said more women get headaches than men. 6% of women get headaches 15 or more days a month, but the number is 3% for men.
Mr Stovner said, “Headaches are prevalent all over the world and can be a great pain for most of the people.” “More and more people are getting headaches, and the report shows that the number will be increasing in the future,” Stovner added, “We need to do more research. It is important to study the different reasons for headaches. Then we can improve our medical skills on different kinds of headaches.”

For most people, it is one of the greatest things to travel into space. However, living in space is not always as interesting as it looks on TV or in movies.
In real life, sometimes astronauts must stay in the International Space Station for several weeks at a time. The station is not very big, so the astronauts don’t have a lot of space to move around. What’s more, the spaceship is much smaller. Astronauts have to eat, sleep, and do their work in it.
However, astronauts can still have fun and relax after a hard day’s work. They can watch movies, play cards, or talk to their friends and family on the Earth. Some astronauts even play a musical instrument. That’s a valuable ability, no matter where you live! They enjoy doing funny things while they are in a weightless environment (失重环境), such as turning somersaults (翻筋斗). They run in circles, up and down walls. They laugh when their hair flies. Astronauts may have a serious job, but they can still find joy in the difficulty.
13.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Life in space is not always as interesting as it is on TV.
B.The spaceship is very big for astronauts to move around.

I walked into a restaurant and ordered some food. After about 20 minutes, a large group of people came in and placed their own orders.
I felt angry because the group got served before me. I watched as they began to eat and laughed loudly. I heard one of them talking about how he knew someone who worked at the restaurant. Unable to stand it anymore, I decided to leave. I asked the waiter to cancel my order angrily.
He told me nicely. “Yours is a special order. The head chef is preparing it himself. It will take a little more time. Please have a drink while you wait.”
I calmed down and waited patiently. A few minutes later, my meal was served by six waiters.
To my surprise, the owner of the restaurant was a long-lost friend of mine. He saw me walking in and decided to surprise me. He turned my simple meal into a five-star meal for free. The people at the other table were shocked and couldn’t stop looking at me. They asked angrily why they didn’t get that kind of service.
Such is life! Some people go ahead of you, laughing at you and talking about how they are smarter, better and luckier than you, while you are working hard day and night, wondering why it’s taking so long for you to get a reward (回报) like them.

What’s your favorite holiday We asked this question to children from different countries. And here are some of their answers.
Lara I think the best holiday in my home country is Christmas. It is on December 25th. It often snows a lot during the Christmas season. The snow gives us a romantic (浪漫的) feeling. There are all kinds of special markets during the holiday. We have great fun visiting these markets with our friends. Of course, we can enjoy some delicious food, like candies, biscuits and cheese.
Mingming In my opinion, the best holiday is the Spring Festival. It often happens in January or February. It is one of the main festivals in my country. My family get together and enjoy traditional food, such as dumplings. We also visit our relatives and friends. The kids receive red envelopes with money inside.
Amy I would say that the best holiday is Thanksgiving. It is the fourth Thursday of November each year. Families get together and talk about things they are thankful for. But I don’t like some aspects (方面) of this holiday. For example, there is so much delicious food at the big dinner and I always eat too much of it.
Silva My favorite holiday My answer is Carnival (狂欢节). It usually happens in February. During the holiday, we wear brightly colored clothes, play music and dance in the streets. People, young or old, men or women, love to dance Samba (桑巴舞) in my country. Everyone is happy and crazy about it.

Do you like eating vegetables Almost everybody knows that eating vegetables is good for us. But why do some people like them while others don’t A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables but show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
People may make facial expressions when eating. How does it affect (影响) a person watching them A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted (厌恶的). The study found that when people in the videos looked disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors (行为) will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous. The research focused only on adults, but the team believed that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.
Helping children to try more vegetables is meaningful. “If children are learning about vegetables at school, it’s important to encourage this interest,” says Jones. Parents can listen to their children tell what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school. Parents and children can also read books together. Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents. Older children may enjoy searching through cookbooks with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a tasty way.
How do the behaviors of adults influence their children’s choices of food The team hopes to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat healthier food.
25.According to Paragraph 2, what is the result of the study
A.People may cook the food others like.
B.Children dislike eating certain vegetables.
C.People may not choose the food others dislike.
D.Young women are easily affected by other people.
26.What will the team probably do next
A.They will study the safety of children’s food.
B.They will study the skills to produce healthy food.
C.They will study the influences of parents’ behaviors.
D.They will study the ways to understand children well.
27.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.Videos Affect Choices of Food
B.Studies on Vegetables Help a Lot
C.Expressions Cause Possible Dangers
D.Opinions on Vegetables Influence Others
It was a very sunny day. Molly was picking apples with her dad on the farm. She was careful to pick the big and sweet apples only because she wanted to make the best apple sauce (酱) and win first place in her town’s Best Apple Sauce Competition. She wanted everything to be perfect.
“Molly, I am coming!” said Sam, Molly’s little brother, with a small bag in his hand.

Dear Friends,
When you see this letter, you will have a good reason to feel excited. It means you are not alone in the universe (宇宙)! Welcome to the earth!
To be honest (说实在的), I once believed that there weren’t aliens. But after I visited the science museum in our city, I had a new understanding of the universe.
In the past, I thought that the universe was just like the night sky. It’s dark and cold, and there aren’t many things in it (the planets, the moon, the stars… what else ).
The museum changed my mind about this. I got to not only “walk” around our solar system (太阳系) but also the space outside. I “traveled” through black holes and some faraway galaxies (星系). The universe is so large and beautiful! Perhaps there is life somewhere out there!
The “Odyssey” show was my favourite part of the museum. It is about space travel. I “stepped” inside China’s space station and got to “experience” the life of astronauts. I even tried to fly the spaceship. It was different from driving a car. Everything was quite interesting!
Which part of the universe are you from Tell me more about yourself and your world!
Don’t forget to visit the science museum in our city if you come to the earth. You will learn a lot about the earth there!
Yours,
Li Hua,
a student in China

For many teenagers, the winter holiday can sometimes feel too quiet. Instead of just watching videos, they might look for interesting and fun ways to move. Luckily, experts designed many exciting activities for teens.
For video games lovers, they are in luck. “Exergaming” is all about playing games to get their whole body moving. They can imagine using a Nintendo Switch (任天堂游戏机) for games like Ring Fit Adventure. In this game, they actually run, and do exercises to finish fun tasks in a world of imagination. Also, they can try Just Dance. There they follow dance moves on the screen to great music. It’s so fun that they will forget they’re exerting themselves! Another excellent choice for them is High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). These are short, powerful exercises they can find on free phone apps or on Bilibili. These exercises usually include quick moves for 30 seconds. Then there will be a short rest. They are super acceptable.
After trying these, if teens want something different and easy to start, they might think about a jump rope challenge. Jumping rope is not just for kids. It’s a full-body exercise and can make hands and feet work well. Teenagers can just set a mini-goal, like jumping 150 times without missing. Many find that it’s more challenging and enjoyable than they think.
In short, the best way for teens to exercise is to find what they truly enjoy. These fun ideas can make moving their body be the best part of their winter break. By choosing an activity and getting started, they can have a fun, healthy, and energetic holiday.

On November 26, 2025, a large fire broke out in Hong Kong. The fire started on the bamboo scaffolding (脚手架) and green safety netting (安全围网) of a building. The fire spread quickly to neighbouring towers. Firefighters, police, and doctors rushed to save people and control the fire.
By the next day, it was reported that at least 44 people had died, and many others were injured or missing. Hundreds evacuated the area and stayed in safer places. This fire is considered the most serious fire in Hong Kong in 77 years and the first to reach a level-5 alarm—the highest fire alarm—in 17 years.
In the accident, there were stories of courage and kindness. Neighbours helped elderly people run away when elevators could not be used. Some people knocked on doors to warn others about the fire. Citizens from other areas sent food and clothing to support the families. These actions showed that Hong Kong people care for one another even in dangerous situations.

Hi! I’m an ant, one of the tiniest animals in the ecosystem.
I live with my big family in a place like a small city, but we never get lost. I have 12,000 sisters and we have the same Mum, the queen ant. But I don’t have many brothers. One day, I found a seed (种子). I left a scent trail (气味踪迹). Soon, my sisters came to help carry the food home. That’s how we talk—through smells!
Mum says we play an important part in making the earth a better place. We move in the soil (土壤) and eat dead leaves. This makes the soil better for plants. Sometimes, we drop seeds in a new place. Then new plants grow! We are the food of birds and lizards. Without us, the soil would be dry, and many animals would be hungry.
We are also connected with humans. The number of us is getting smaller and smaller. People use spray (喷剂) to kill bad bugs (害虫), but this also makes it hard for us to live. Big machines dig the earth and break our nests. Also, the weather is changing. If it’s too hot or rainy, we can’t find food.
We really need your help. Please take some actions to protect us.

I studied in China for a year, and now it’s the Christmas holiday. I came back to the UK three days ago, but it feels like a century. It’s amazing to see my family. Also, I really love Christmas and the delicious food. However, I have some digital (数字的) problems here.
Today, I wanted to get some vegetables and meat from a shop. I decided to ride a shared bike to get there. But it took forever to find a bike! I finally found an old one. However, that 20-minute ride cost me an arm and a leg—4.8 pounds!
In the shop, I quickly got all the things I needed. Next, I tried to use my digital wallet, but the shop’s payment system didn’t work. The shopkeeper told me to pay with cash. As I always make digital payments in China, I never carry my wallet. I had to go back home to get some cash. What a waste of time!
When I got home, I was so tired that I gave up on cooking. I ordered my favorite dishes through an app instead, but the delivery was really slow. When my dishes finally arrived 90 minutes later, they were stone cold. I had to heat them one by one in the oven. I felt tired and hungry.
