Between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, there is a special mangrove wetland. It is very important for birds that travel long distances. Many waterbirds fly from East Asia to Australia every year, and these wetlands are an important place for them to rest and find food.
Mangroves are trees that grow in salt water. They are like natural protectors for the city and the birds. Their roots can make water clean. They also help stop strong storms from hurting the coast. The thick mangrove forests also give birds a safe home. Birds build nests and raise their babies there, even in storms, the little birds are safe. That’s why mangroves are important. Nearby, Shenzhen also has a Nature Reserve. It is home to over 1,200 wild monkeys and about 100,000 migratory birds come every year.
To save and keep the valuable home for birds, Shenzhen and Hong Kong work closely together. In November 2024, the Shenzhen International Mangrove Center opened. It teaches people about mangroves and helps Shenzhen and Hong Kong work better together. It uses technology to help protect birds, and this hard work is helpful! For example, the number of black-faced spoonbills, an endangered bird, is getting bigger. Thirty years ago, there were only about 300 of these birds. Now, there are nearly 7,000! The Wetland Education Center in Shenzhen Bay Park also lets people learn about nature through fun activities like workshops and bird watching.

If you feel lonely (孤独的), a pet can make you feel better. Studies show pets are good for our health: they help us feel happy and keep our body working well. For old people with dementia (痴呆), animals can also be a big help. But it may be difficult for them to look after a real pet well. So a US company (公司) called Tombot made a robot dog to help these people.
The robot dog is named Jennie. It looks and acts just like a real dog. It is not too big or too small, so it can sit on your lap. It can understand (理解) what you say and can feel your touch. This robot dog is easy to look after. It only uses a rechargeable battery (可充电电池) . You can use a phone app (应用) to give it a name. The price of a robot dog is not very high because Tombot hopes more old people can use its robot dogs later.
Tom Stevens, the founder (创始人) of Tombot, had the idea for Jennie because his mother has dementia and can’t look after her pet dog. So he wants to make a robot pet dog to be his mother’s companion so that she doesn’t feel lonely. He would like to help other people like his mother, too.

Eurasian Curlews are big birds with long legs. In the UK, these birds often live in the west (西部) of Scotland, near the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, they are now in danger. Farming and buildings are taking their homes. Animals like dogs and sheep eat their eggs and babies. So the number of curlews is smaller and smaller.
Matt works in a nature park, and he knows the importance of helping the birds. He spends three days making the coat with bamboo and plastic. Then, he walks 53 miles in two days. What drives him to do that This walk isn’t for fun. It helps more people care about curlews.
Matt’s idea comes from a woman called Mary Colwell. In 2023, she walks about 500 miles to learn more about curlews and protect the birds.

The word “zhiyin” in Chinese, meaning the best friend who truly understands you, comes from a famous story during the Spring and Autumn Period. Yu Boya was good at playing the guqin, a traditional seven-string musical instrument. Though many people liked his skills, Boya felt lonely because he believed no one could really understand the feelings in his music.
One night, while traveling to Chu, Boya had to stop his boat at the Hanyang River because of strong wind. After the wind passed, a full moon rose slowly. Touched by the beautiful night, Boya began playing his guqin. A woodcutter named Zhong Ziqi, who was passing by, stopped to listen. Boya played a piece about high mountains, and Ziqi said, “How great! It sounds like Mount Tai reaching the sky!” Then Boya played another piece about flowing water, and Ziqi exclaimed, “How nice! It sounds like a great river running forever!” Boya was deeply moved because Ziqi understood his music so well. They talked all night and became close friends. Before leaving, they promised to meet again the next year.
Unluckily, when Boya returned, he heard that Ziqi had died from an illness. Heartbroken, Boya went to Ziqi’s tomb (坟墓), played one last song full of sadness, and then broke his guqin into pieces.
