Man Lichu couldn’t believe his eyes when he walked into Zhang’s Garden. This place was once his home. Now it looks “completely different”, he said.
Many others once called Zhang’s Garden home, too. It was once a residential area (居民区). After years of redevelopment, it now stands as a commercial and cultural landmark. Visitors arrive in large numbers. Many are surprised to see the 143-year-old historical doors and windows.
Zhang’s Garden is widely praised as the “Best Garden in Shanghai”. There are many shikumen (石库门) houses. Some buildings mix the best of Chinese and Western designs. Take the W12 building for example. Its baroque style (巴洛克风格) catches the eye and its beautifully carved (雕刻) wooden decorations stand out as well.
Zhang’s Garden witnessed Shanghai’s development. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, great minds like Sun Yat-sen (孙中山) often gave speeches there. It was also the birthplace of bikes and electric lamps in Shanghai.
Things changed around the middle of last century. Many factories were built nearby after the 1950s. Over time, Zhang’s Garden became more and more crowded. Mr. Man used to live in an 18-square-metre apartment with six family members.
In late 2018, Shanghai started to redevelop Zhang’s Garden. Chu Feng was one of the project managers. “There are a total of 42 buildings with 2,053 rooms,” he said. “It’s not easy to fix them up while keeping their historical charm.”
Chu’s team went to great lengths to gather historical information about the buildings. It took them three years to collect old photos and architectural plans. Their document on the W12 building was more than 400 pages long. Another challenge was to add modern equipment like security cameras. This had to be done without damaging the buildings’ quaint appearance (古色古香的外观).
After a lot of hard work, the western part of Zhang’s Garden opened to the public at the end of 2022. Work on the larger eastern part is still going on. The project is expected to be completed by 2027. The “Best Garden in Shanghai” will then be ready to amaze even more visitors.

Gordon Williams’s hobby may seem strange to people when they meet it for the first time. But it is a traditional craft (手艺). He builds model ships inside old bottles.
Gordon loves ships. His interest in them began many years ago when he visited a museum in Ottawa, Canada. There was a show of model ships in bottles. Gordon thought the show was wonderful. But he wondered how the craftsman got the ship through the thin neck of the bottle. Gordon decided to find it out.
He found an old master craftsman who was willing to teach him the necessary skills. First, Gordon takes an old bottle. Then he puts in a layer of putty (一层油灰), shapes, paints and makes it look like the sea. Next he builds the ship. To get the ship through the thin neck of the bottle, Gordon has to carefully hold down the masts (桅杆). This step needs special skills. When the ship is inside the bottle, he uses a long, thin tool to raise the masts.
Gordon has completed well over one hundred models. His wish is to build bigger model ships, such as aircraft carriers. This will be more challenging (富于挑战性的), as he will have to build the ship actually inside the bottle. How are typhoons or hurricanes named The practice of naming these storms has a long history. Before the 20th century, they were named by the time they appeared or the place where they landed. For example, the hurricane that destroyed Galveston in 1900, killing tens of thousands of people, is remembered as the Great Galveston Hurricane.
The practice of giving storms personal names starts from Wragge. He was an Australian meteorologist (气象学家). In the 1890s, he named storms after women, story characters, and politicians that he didn’t like. The modern system of using personal names developed during World War II. At that time, people began using women’s names. Short and quickly understood names were easier to send by the radio and easier to know if there was more than one storm in a given area. In 1953, the system was made formal. And men’s names were added to the list in 1979.
How are storm names picked today A special group of the World Meteorological Organization keeps lists of names to be used for storms. The names must be short, special, and have something to do with their cultural and geographic areas. For the Atlantic basin (海盆) there are six lists of 21 names each. If there are more than 21 named storms, Greek letters are used. For the Western Pacific/South China Sea basin, names on the lists are given by countries. The lists recur every six years. But if a hurricane or typhoon is especially destructive (破坏性的). The name will not repeat again, such as, Sandy (2012), Haiyan (2013), and Michael (2018).
