The Chong Yang Festival takes place on the 9th day of the 9th month of the old calendar. As such, it is known as the Double Ninth Festival.
The festival begins around 475 BC. It comes from the idea of yin and yang. Yin is for “darkness”, yang for “life”. “9” is thought of as yang. The 9th day of the 9th month is a double yang day, which gives us the name Chong Yang Festival. The word “Chong” says “repeat” (重复) in Chinese.
The 9th month also shows the coming of winter and the weather gets cooler. The festival’s traditions are all about staying healthy and happy during this change.
On the festival, people usually climb mountains, enjoy chrysanthemums (菊花), and eat double-ninth cakes. Why do they do these things Climbing mountains is good exercise. It makes people strong for the cold days. Chrysanthemums are beautiful and strong in the cold wind. Looking at them is a way to wish for a long life. The double-ninth cake is delicious. The special museum is at Shanxi Experimental Secondary School in Taiyuan. It opened on April 10 and on that day, they put on a cool show, which mixed (融合) old skills with new technology. They used models (模型), 3D printing (3D打印) to teach about Shanxi’s traditional buildings. There were many amazing things, like a model of Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (应县木塔)—the world’s tallest wooden pagoda, and a 3D-printed model of Foguang Temple (佛光寺) was the most popular one.
Now, countless students go into the school museum. Some of them watch films about Shanxi’s history with VR glasses. Others learn to make small models of old Shanxi buildings. A few students even try to tell history stories as a museum guide there. The museum is always full of excited students and teachers. “It makes history fun and easy to learn,” one student says. “And it makes me feel proud of Shanxi.”
