Read the sentences. Underline the verbs which show an ongoing action in the past.

过去进行时:
1. 概念:表示过去某一时刻或某段时间内正在进行的动作。
2. 构成:was/were + 动词现在分词
下大雪的时候你在做什么?
那时我正坐火车旅行。
台风来袭时,你的家人在做什么?
我和孩子们在一起读书
邻居打来电话时,我们一家人正在吃晚饭。
我们正开车回家,突然刮起了大风。
当我们开车回家的时候,刮起了大风。
我们开车回去时,雨下得很大。
句型 结构公式 示例
肯定句 主语 + was/were + doing I was reading a book at 8:00 yesterday evening.
否定句 主语 + was/were + not + doing She was not (wasn't) watching TV at that time.
一般疑问句 Was/Were + 主语 + doing Were you doing your homework when I called
特殊疑问句 疑问词 + was/were + 主语 + doing? What were they doing?
过去进行时的结构
以when和while引导的时间状语从句
1)延续性动词和非延续性动词
延续性动词指动作可以延续一段时间,而不是瞬间结束。
如:read 、work、study、drink、eat等。
非延续性动词指动作极为短暂,瞬间结束。
如:come、start、begin、hit、jump、knock等。
Let’s learn
1)when可以表示时间点,也可以表示时间段,后面既可以+延续性动词,也可以+非延续性动词,时态既可以是一般过去时,也可以是过去进行时。
2)while仅表示时间段,引导表示过去的时间状语从句时,从句的动词必须是延续性动词,时态用过去进行时。
E.g. He fell asleep while he was watching TV.
The fire alarm went off while we were having a meeting.
主句(瞬间动作)+ while + 从句(持续动作)
3)当主句和从句都为过去进行时,只能用while引导,不能用when。
E.g. We were playing basketball while it was raining.
主句(持续动作) + while + 从句(持续动作)
记忆口诀:
when后“可长可短”(过去进行时、一般现在时都可以)
while后“只能长”(只能用过去进行时)
两个动作都是“长动作”(过去进行时),用while
I did my homework. The typhoon landed on the coast.
The power went out. My father and I made dinner.
Kate wrote a letter. Her brother called to warn her of the storm.
My parents packed the supplies. I moved our things off the floor.
I slept soundly. It rained cats and dogs.

按结构连成一句,检查通顺。
1.I did my homework. The typhoon landed on the coast.
→ I was doing my homework when the typhoon landed on the coast.
2.The power went out. My father and I made dinner.
→ My father and I were making dinner when the power went out.
3.Kate wrote a letter. Her brother called to warn her of the storm.
→ Kate was writing a letter when her brother called to warn her of the storm.
4.My parents packed the supplies. I moved our things off the floor.
→ While my parents were packing the supplies, I was moving our things off the floor.
5.I slept soundly. It rained cats and dogs.
→ While I was sleeping soundly, it was raining cats and dogs.
4c Complete the passage with was, were, when, or while.
When Jenny looked up, thick black clouds were forming in the sky, and the rain ______ beating against their roof.
“Quick, this way,” said Dad.
