Have you ever been annoyed by a loud noise while studying for a big exam That's
exactly what happened to some students at Shenzhen Bao'an Middle School. A bird called the
koel(噪鹃) was singing loudly outside their windows, day and night. As Gaokao was coming
soon, an anxious student wrote a letter to the headmaster. He asked to have the bird's nest
removed.
Headmaster Yuan Weixing had a difficult choice. He could easily say “yes” and cut the
nest down. But instead, he wrote a beautiful letter back. He refused the request.
In his letter, the headmaster explained that the bird was just following its natural instincts(

world does not exist for just one person.” He said that learning to live with other living things is
a necessary part of growing up.
But the headmaster did not just say “no”. He also took action to help the students. The
school gave students earplugs to block out the sound. They also built artificial bird nests in a
garden far from the classroom buildings to attract the birds away.
This story became very popular on the internet. Many people praised the headmaster for

①Trees are one of the oldest plants on our planet. They keep the air clean, reduce noise
pollution, help clean water and provide food and building materials.
②Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At one to three years old, young trees develop
ways to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns to stop animals from coming
close.
③At the age of four, trees begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough to face
many difficulties later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more
slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
④When a tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size.
Not only does the adult tree give us shade (树荫 ), oxygen and natural beauty, it is also a great
place for a tree house or for us to read a book. If the adult tree receives good care, it will remain
healthy for many years.

⑤Little by little, trees begin to grow older and finally die. At this time, they still have an
important place in nature. When a tree becomes empty inside or part of it becomes dead, it
becomes a home to small animals and a source (来源) of food for many other animals.
