The other day, a new research idea struck me. The conceptual path was clear, but putting it into practice would require real effort — writing code, training models, and performing statistical analysis. Just a few years ago, the next step would have been a no-brainer. I would recruit (招收) a graduate student into my lab and allow him to run the project. This time, an uncomfortable thought came into my head: Should I just give these tasks to AI rather than take a chance on a student
I thought about the skills I had when I started graduate school more than a decade ago. I had zero research experience. One professor saw past my ignorance and agreed to take me on. The first few months were a hard reality check. I worked tirelessly, yet whenever I presented my work, my adviser would send me back to start from scratch. But she didn’t give up on me. It took a year or so before I finally produced something we could build on.
Years later, when I became a professor, I watched my own students struggle, just as I once had. Eventually, the investment paid off, and I experienced the deep satisfaction of watching them transform into capable junior collaborators.
Now, AI has introduced a new option. It can competently handle a lot of the work I need to finish immediately. The issue is not whether my students are valuable — in the long run, they are invaluable. The issue is that their value emerges slowly, whereas AI delivers immediate returns.
Close colleagues are quietly holding back from taking on as many students as they used to. My immediate thought is to expect any student I recruit to contribute at a much higher level from the beginning. But to meet those expectations, a student would likely rely heavily on AI tools. The real danger is that the common assumption that taking on students is part of a professor’s academic journey will quietly disappear.
Personally, I am seriously tempted (诱惑) not to take a chance on a beginner for my new project — which means today, I probably wouldn’t recruit my younger self.
4. What would be the author’s reaction to the new research idea a few years ago
A. Using AI for all the work. B. Giving the tasks to a student.
C. Seeking help from friends. D. Asking for his adviser’s opinions.
5. Why does the author mention his own experience as a graduate student
A. To show how difficult research is.
B. To explain why he became a professor.
C. To criticize his former adviser’s methods.
D. To prove the value of patience in teaching.
6. What is the author’s main concern about AI in education
A. It threatens the tradition of teaching.
B. It lengthens students’ academic journey.
C. It takes the place of teachers.
D. It increases professors’ workload greatly.
7. What can be inferred about the author now
A. He hesitates to take new students.
B. He values processes more than results.
C. He refuses to use AI in his projects.
D. He will build a student team soon.
C
It’s normal to see a little hair come out in the shower, but noticing handfuls of hair pile up in the pipe opening is a bit alarming. On social media, lots of people are attributing (把……归因于) their hair loss concerns to one reason in particular: hard water.
Hard water is incredibly mineral-rich. “The higher the calcium and magnesium levels, the harder the water,” says Gaurav Agnihotri, a clinical associate at UChicago Medicine. There are tests you can use to measure the hardness of your water, but here’s an easy indicator: “If white chalk builds up around the taps, the sink, shower heads or even your coffee maker, those could be signs that you have hard water,” he says.
Showering with hard water isn’t bad for you in itself, but it “can potentially harm the hair texture, making the hair feel either too dry or even too oily,” Agnihotri says. “Shampooing (洗发) with hard water can leave mineral buildups on your hair,” added Agnihotri. Over time, this buildup on the skin on your head can give the appearance of oily hair, even if you’ve freshly washed it. Alongside this, you might begin to notice your hair become more dull and straw-like, and your hair more likely to suffer breakage, says Mary Ann Bentz, a doctor at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in Connecticut.
Washing your hair with hard water can make your hair drier and more brittle, studies have shown, but “there’s no direct evidence in the medical literature linking the exposure to hard water with hair loss,” says Agnihotri. It’s normal to lose around 50 to 100 hairs a day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Anything beyond that, it’s time to head to the doctor’s office, says Bentz.
To mitigate mineral buildup, experts recommend periodically using something that has EDTA as an active ingredient. You could also try using a clarifying shampoo once a week, she says. Whichever product you use, the key is to apply the shampoo directly to your skin and gently massage — not rub harshly — your hair, says Agnihotri.
8. What is a sign of hard water at home
A. Hair loss becomes increasingly serious.
B. Water pressure in the shower gets lower.
C. Skin feels unusually dry after being washed.
D. White mineral substances form on water facilities.
9. What effect can hard water have, according to paragraph 3
A. It directly causes permanent hair loss. B. It makes hair look oily and easy to break.
C. It changes the natural color of the hair. D. It prevents shampoo from working effectively.
10. What can we know from paragraph 4
A. No clear medical proof connects hard water and hair loss.
B. More research is needed to solve the hair loss problem.
C. It’s normal for adults to lose over 100 hairs per day.
D. Hair loss cannot be cured in a short time.
11. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Strengthen. B. Highlight. C. Illustrate. D. Relieve.
D
Are you worried about your data being stolen on public WiFi Concerned about devices being hacked on public charging points Hesitant about scanning that QR code Don’t be: these are fears based in myth. Experts have written an open letter to “correct a set of persistent myths about digital risk to everyday people and small businesses”.
Top of the list is to “avoid public WiFi”, which many credible sources still say is unsafe. In October, Google offered advice in a report on text scams — avoid using public WiFi whenever possible, as these networks can be insecure and easily used by attackers. But the experts say that “large-scale attacks via public WiFi are exceptionally rare today. Modern products use encryption (加密) technologies to protect your traffic even on open networks and operating systems, and browsers now warn users about untrusted connections”.
They also break the myth of avoiding QR codes — “there is no evidence of widespread crime originating from QR-code scanning itself” — and the myth of turning off Bluetooth and contactless capability — “wireless attacks in the wild are extraordinarily rare and typically require specialized hardware and physical nearness.”
If you regularly change your password or clear cookies (缓存), then don’t bother, the experts add. Deleting cookies “doesn’t meaningfully improve security or stop modern tracking.” Changing your password often leads to weaker passwords and reuse across accounts, which are security “no-nos”.
The letter is the brainchild of Bob Lord, former security chief for Yahoo and Twitter, who has been annoyed by “hacklore” for some time. He said someone sent him an article that talked about public WiFi, QR codes, USB charging stations and a few other things. And he said, “I need to turn my eye-rolling into something productive and to share it with the world.” Lord emphasized that the advice in the letter was aimed at the public but high-risk individuals such as activists and officials would need tailored protections. The protections that do matter for everyone, according to the letter, are: keeping your devices and apps updated; enabling multi-factor identity confirmation on sensitive accounts; starting to use passkeys, a new sign-in technology that is replacing passwords.
12. What is the main purpose of the experts’ open letter
A. To warn of digital threats.
B. To correct wrong ideas about online risks.
C. To advise against using the public network.
D. To introduce advanced security technology.
13. What do experts say about public WiFi today
A. It should be avoided by all means.
B. It is safe for sending important messages.
C. Serious attacks through it are very uncommon.
D. Its risks have increased due to modern technology.
14. What is considered really important for online safety
A. Changing passwords very often. B. Turning off all wireless functions.
C. Updating software and using passkeys. D. Following the advice for high-risk groups.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Public WiFi: A Common Danger
B. How to Protect Our Data in Public
C. Are Some Common Online Fears Myths
D. Security: A Top Priority in the Digital Age

In today’s fast-paced, screen-filled world, boredom is often viewed as something to be avoided. ____16____ When used correctly, it helps students think more thoroughly, absorb information better, and develop creativity, all skills that make tutoring sessions and study time far more effective.
Boredom isn’t a sign that learning isn’t happening. On the contrary, it creates the mental space where deep thinking, understanding, and creativity can flourish. Why will students benefit from boredom
____17____
When students rush through assignments or tutoring sessions, they often miss the chance to internalize the information. Brief moments of pause allow the brain to organize ideas and make sense of new knowledge, improving long-term memory.
Their creativity and problem-solving ability will be enhanced.
Boredom encourages imagination. When students aren’t constantly entertained, their minds begin to explore possibilities. ____18____
Their focus and concentration will be improved.
By learning to sit with boredom, students strengthen their ability to focus. This makes study sessions, homework, and tutoring more effective and reduces the need for constant guidance.
They will achieve greater emotional resilience (韧性).
Learning isn’t always easy, and students need to tolerate small struggles. Moments of boredom teach patience and resilience, preparing students to face challenges in school and beyond.
Next time you feel bored, embrace it. Ask yourself: What do I already understand What am I curious about ____19____ These moments of reflection can lead to breakthroughs in understanding, boost creativity, and make learning feel more meaningful.
By incorporating structured reflection and “thinking time” into learning, students can turn boredom into a powerful learning tool and transform spare moments into opportunities for growth. They can improve focus, creativity, and confidence along the way. ____20____ It’s a little bit of boredom.
A. What if I finally figure it out
B. They will gain better understanding.
C. How could I explore this topic differently
D. Boredom is an immediate indicator of failure in learning.
E. Sometimes, the most effective tool for learning isn’t a textbook or even a teacher.
F. However, for students, boredom can actually be a powerful tool that boosts learning.
G. This can inspire innovative solutions and help students develop independent thinking skills.

Recently, I was in downtown Chicago, visiting from Michigan. I spent a few hours in Millennium Park, enjoying the lively atmosphere and casually observing the tourists and locals passing by. On the way back to my car, as I reached for my keys, I realized my purse was missing. I was seized by panic. My purse held my ID, credit cards, medications and hundreds of dollars in cash. I started to feel anxiety, first in my legs, then in my gut and then right on top of my chest. I couldn’t think straight. My mind was racing with the worst possibilities as I anxiously retraced my steps.
After about an hour, I stopped in front of a Millennium Park gift shop and walked in, just to see if maybe someone had turned in my purse. I went up to the cashier and asked if anyone had brought in a black purse. The woman’s eyes widened; she said someone had. At that moment, all of the tears and sobs came out. I was overwhelmed with a wave of relief as she said that about half an hour earlier, two women had come into the gift shop with a black purse. It turned out that they had spotted the purse on a park bench near the store, but noticed a man going through it. They immediately became suspicious.
“They walked up to the man and asked if it was his. He mumbled that his wife had lost it. And they just didn’t believe him,” the cashier told me. The women pretended the purse was theirs, and wrestled it from his hands. Purse in hand, the women hurried to the gift shop and went inside. They waited for about half an hour to see if the owner would return, but no one appeared. They left the purse with a security guard. Five minutes later, I walked in.

【参考范文】
I rushed to the security guard. My hands trembling, I explained my situation and showed my ID to prove the purse was mine. He smiled warmly and handed me the black purse, saying, “Those two women were really quick-witted and brave. They wouldn’t let that thief get away with it.” I checked every item carefully — my ID, credit cards, cash and medications were all there, untouched. Tears of relief welled up in my eyes as I imagined the women standing up to the stranger for me.
However, the two women didn’t leave any of their information. I asked the cashier and the security guard repeatedly, hoping to get their names or contact details to thank them properly, but they had just hurried off after handing over the purse. I stood there for a long time, feeling both grateful and regretful that I couldn’t thank them face-to-face. Even so, their kindness has stayed with me ever since. They taught me that courage and goodness are always around us, and I promised myself I would pass on this warmth to others whenever I could.
