Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed.
Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least.
“You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit — known as BART. “You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.”
It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works.
Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.”
Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century, so could short stories save transit
Trost thinks so.
“At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says.
And you’ll never be without something to read.

People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though their lifespans can reach 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a large number of genes (基因) that stop tumors (肿瘤) developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improve the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” said the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s.Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not use. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in rats, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancer spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist in the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”
8. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer
A. They have a rather large body size.
B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
9. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals
A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass.
C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
10. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in paragraph 5 probably refer to
A. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
B. The risk of cancer is not related to body sizes.
C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
D. The huger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
11. What can be concluded from the passage
A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
B. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.
C. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
D. The extra copies of elephants’ genes have been used to cure cancer patients.
D
Inspired by butterfly wings, a team of German researchers have developed a new kind of robotic wings that can work using only magnetic fields (磁场). The new wings created by the Technical University of Darmstadt researchers need no batteries or electronics.
The researchers drew inspiration from the remarkable efficiency and endurance (持久力) of monarch butterflies, known to have incredibly long migrations between Canada and Mexico.
Every autumn, millions of Monarch butterflies start a 3,000-mile journey from their North American breeding grounds to the warmer climate of southwestern Mexico for the winter.
These new robotic wings achieve energy-efficient flight by combining movement with passive bending, which was rarely copied outside the natural world. The team, led by Professor Oliver Gutfleisch and Dr. Denys Makarov, used a combination of flexible plastic fixed with tiny magnetic particles (颗粒) to build the wings.
The team found that the magnetic particles, when exposed to external magnetic fields, caused the wings to bend in a manner similar to that of butterflies. Achieving the desired design proved challenging; however, after testing fewer than 12 different designs, the team could develop wings strikingly similar to those that evolved in butterflies.
Looking ahead, these new wings could have a wide range of applications. One could be environmental research in which winged robots monitor pollinator populations or measure air quality. They could also be helpful in disasters, with their small, energy-efficient design enabling robots to navigate dangerous areas for search and rescue operations. The team also pointed out that the new design could also be readily adapted for medical sciences.
The principle of using magnetic particles in this way could also open doors for developing new kinds of artificial muscles or other innovative materials that can change shape on demand. While the robotic wings currently rely on external magnetic fields to change shape, the team is optimistic about integrating man-made magnetic field generators into future upgrades of the technology. “We plan to explore what changes to magnetic fields can enable more complex movements and control,” explained Muhammad Bilal Khan, another lead author.
12. What’s the driving power of the robotic wings
A. The magnetic fields. B. The electronic motor.
C. The rechargeable battery. D. The air pressure.
13. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A. The working principle of the robots.
B. Challenges facing the research team.
C. The potential of the robotic wings.
D. Uncertainties in developing robotic wings.
14. What does the last paragraph imply about the robotic wings
A. Their use is strictly limited to environmental monitoring.
B. They are expected to operate in controlled magnetic fields.
C. They should still depend on outside magnetic fields.
D. Their new versions will function as well as human muscles.
15. Which is a suitable title for the text
A. Robotics Taking Wings Thanks to Butterflies
B. The Monarch Butterfly's 3,000-Mile Journey
C. Butterflies Rely on Magnetic Fields for Migration
D. Butterfly Wings Hold Clues to Natural Adaptation

Johnny, a 17-year-old from Whitehorse, had been competing in Cross-Country Skiing for five years. For many young athletes like him in Whitehorse, Yukon, the Yukon Cross-Country Ski Championships were more than just a competition. It was their dream. A year ago, Johnny qualified for the Championships and successfully won a medal.
After the competition, Johnny was eager to share his experience with Hayden, his teammate and best friend. Hayden had narrowly missed qualifying for the Championships. Johnny had watched his friend train tirelessly, push himself to the limit, and always keep his big smile. Johnny knew how much the Championships meant to Hayden.
Johnny handed Hayden some colorful pins. “These are pins I traded with athletes from all over Yukon,” Johnny said with a smile, “I want you to have them, so you can feel a part of the event too.”
Hayden was touched, “Thanks, Johnny. This means a lot.”
“Next time,” Johnny continued, “I hope you can also experience the event. I know you’ll make it.”
Hayden nodded, “I’ll work even harder for that.”
This year’s Yukon Cross-Country Ski Championships would be held in a month. Coach Nick guided the team through daily tough training and the team made significant progress in their skating, cornering, and downhill techniques. Meanwhile, they enhanced their endurance and balance. Both Johnny and Hayden met the Championship standards. Given Johnny’s rich competitive experience. Coach Nick once again qualified Johnny for this year’s event and Hayden was selected as an alternate (替补).
The qualification for the competition excited Johnny, but there was always an idea staying in his mind. Johnny knew his friend had been wanting to go to the Championships for several years.

This was the last chance for both of them to attend the Championships, as they would age out of the competition after this year. The thought became clear in his mind, strong and steady.
