For much of history, the practice of art was mysterious, and artists were viewed as being somewhat odd and often mad. Even the word most commonly associated with artists — inspiration — has its own magical qualities. Literally, the word “inspiration” means the breathing-in of a spirit. Artists were thought of as people who were uniquely inspired to create.
Many artists credited their talents to the presence of some supernatural power. The Romantic poets believed that art was a term that meant an ultimate expression of beauty and truth. The search for this ideal led them to explore both natural and supernatural themes in their works.
Another persistent view of art regarded its divorce from logic. Reason and logic were the province of scientists and philosophers, whereas creativity and insight were the area of the artists. The two separate aspects of the mind were supposed to remain distinct.
But in 1704, a major breakthrough occurred. Sir Isaac Newton, mathematician and physicist, published his study of light, Opticks. One of Newton’s major discoveries was on the nature of color. Using a prism (棱镜), Newton provided a scientific explanation for the presence of rainbows. The artistic community was shocked. A scientist had ventured into their sacred territory.
More than a hundred years later, John Keats, one of the most famous Romantic poets, accused Newton of reducing beauty by “unweaving the rainbow”. His colleague, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, famously remarked that the souls of five hundred Newtons would be needed to make one Shakespeare. And yet, from another perspective, Newton did not reduce the beauty of the rainbow; he enhanced it. In his search to uncover the secrets of the rainbow, Newton demonstrated the wonder, creativity, and inspiration of an artist. His discovery also paved the way for the development of spectroscopy, a way of analyzing the chemical makeup of light. Now scientists can look at the stars and know their composition. The sense of wonder this ability creates is not much different from the wonder the poet or artist feels when staring at those same stars.
24.According to the passage, what was the common view of artists in history
A.Their works focused on the supernatural. B.Their unique abilities came from within.
C.They possessed both logic and magic. D.They were strange but indeed gifted.
25.How did the Romantic poets react to Newton’s discovery about light and color
A.They credited Newton’s insights to mystical influences.
B.They felt it faded the poetic beauty of natural phenomena.
C.They were inspired to integrate more scientific themes in their poetry.
D.They believed it added a new dimension to the appreciation of beauty.
26.Why does the author mention John Keats’ and Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s views on Newton
A.To contrast their criticism with science’s artistic value.
B.To highlight the effect of scientific breakthroughs on art.
C.To show Romantic poets’ objection to scientific progress.
D.To emphasize the superior creativity of poets over scientists.
27.Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A.Distinguishing Art from Science B.Isaac Newton’s Influence on Arts
C.Shared Wonder of Art and Science D.The Artistic Interpretation of Science
C
Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.
Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting the places for birds to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration or flight paths of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas.
The major danger for migratory birds is development. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. One of the scientists who worked on the study says “Many of these important places have been lost to land reclamation because of urban, industrial and agricultural land expansion”.
The problem, according to scientists, is that many of these small birds die along their migration paths because they don’t have a safe place to feed and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next part of their journey. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time in protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that doesn’t exist now is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says.
The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopping areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not. A bird might die.
One scientist who is not connected with the report tells Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds.
He says small changes, like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of the areas birds would be likely to use, could make a big difference.
28.What mainly caused the disappearing of birds’ habitats
A.The decrease of awareness to protect birds. B.Natural disasters.
C.Overuse of land by human beings. D.The rising sea level.
29.What may be the main reason for many birds’ death on the way of migration
A.Tiredness and hunger. B.Beast attack on the ground.
C.Hunting of humans. D.The long journey.
30.According to the last two paragraphs, how should we protect the migrating birds
A.By keeping fewer cats or dogs.
B.By restoring their destroyed habitats.
C.By helping change the birds’ migration paths.
D.By preserving the ecological environments on their migration paths.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A.To call on people to protect the birds’ habitats.
B.To analyze the reasons for disappearing of birds’ habitats.
C.To offer some solutions to the problem of birds’ habitats.
D.To tell us a huge percentage of bird species are in danger.
D
The number of people living in urban areas has tripled (三倍) in the last 50 years. If a major natural disaster hits a city, more lives are in danger. Meanwhile, extreme weather events are becoming stronger and more frequent than ever due to climate change. How can we deal with this growing threat
Luckily, AI is stepping up to help. Its applications in tackling various hazards are already making a difference. In October 2024, experts used AI models to accurately predict where Hurricane Milton would land. AI is also being used to warn the public more efficiently. The U. S. National Weather Service has partnered with AI translation firm Lilt to help deliver forecasts in Spanish and Chinese. This could shorten the time to translate a warning from an hour to just ten minutes.
Machine learning techniques have been applied to weather forecasting models for years. But recent advances have improved the accuracy and speed of forecasting. Traditional models, which rely on complex equations to simulate interactions between water and air in the atmosphere, require supercomputers. As a result, they can take hours to generate a single forecast. By contrast, AI weather models learn to spot patterns by training on decades of climate data. This data can be easily gathered from satellites and ground sensors and shared by governments.
However, AI models are only as good as the data they are trained on, which can be a problem in some places. Poorer regions, often at the greatest risk of climate disasters, typically have fewer weather sensors. The ones they do have are often poorly maintained, creating gaps in climate data. AI systems trained on this skewed (有偏差的) data can be less accurate and negatively affect forecasts. In addition, unlike physics-based models, which follow set rules, AI models become more and more complex. As they advance, these models increasingly operate as “black boxes”, where the path from input to output becomes less transparent (透明的).
32.What is causing the growing threats from natural disasters in cities
A.Outdated weather models in cities.
B.Low disaster risk awareness in cities.
C.Urban growth raises disaster risks.
D.Climate change reduces extreme weather in cities.
33.What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A.Government efforts in disaster relief.
B.Limitations of traditional weather forecasts.
C.Economic impact of disasters on urban areas.
D.AI’s role in improving disaster preparedness.
34.How do AI forecasting models outperform traditional models
A.AI learns from past data to predict more quickly.
B.AI is more transparent than physics-based models.
C.AI relies on more supercomputers for faster results.
D.AI needs no satellite data, using only ground sensors.
35.What is the author’s overall attitude toward AI’s role in disaster response
A.Critical of its complexity. B.Optimistic despite challenges.
C.Uncertain of its effectiveness. D.Skeptical due to data limitations.

When my art teacher Ms. Lopez invited me to join the after-school painting club, I shook my head firmly, filled with shyness and deep self-doubt. “Thank you, but I’m not creative at all,” I mumbled, staring at the floor to avoid her kind eyes. “I can only draw clumsy stick figures, and I’m sure I’ll embarrass myself in front of the other talented students.” Ms. Lopez chuckled softly, patted my shoulder, and handed me a new sketchbook (素描本). “Creativity isn’t about perfect pictures,” she said patiently. “It’s about expressing your true feelings. Just give one class a try.”
Unwillingly, I agreed, and my nervousness peaked at the first meeting. The art room walls were covered with amazing works — vivid sunsets, lifelike cats, and delicate portraits. I slipped into a corner, gripping my pencil so tight that my knuckles (指关节) whitened. Staring at the blank page, I dared not draw a single line, fearing the students would laugh at my unskilled work and simple ideas.
Ms. Lopez noticed my anxiety and sat beside me quietly. “What makes you feel truly happy and relaxed ” she asked softly. “My grandma’s apple orchard (果园),” I replied instantly. “I go there every weekend and love everything about it, especially the old apple tree and the little sparrows.” “Then draw that,” she encouraged. “Forget the rules — just paint how that place makes you feel inside.”
Taking a deep breath, I started sketching the old apple tree I loved so much. I drew its thick branches stretching toward the sky and a tiny sparrow perched on one limb, singing happily. When I finished, Ms. Lopez held up my sketch proudly. “This work has so much heart!” she said warmly. The class broke into applause, and Mia, the girl sitting beside me, whispered softly, “The sparrow looks so alive and lovely!” However, I could still see that it was far from perfect with uneven lines.

1.原文:W: Tom, your name was mentioned in yesterday’ s school news report. Did you win an award at the science fair
M: Yes, I won second prize. I made a robot that can help my classmates clean the classroom.
2. 原文:W: Shall we have the meeting today or on Tuesday
M: Neither. It was originally scheduled for Monday, but it has been postponed to two days later.
3. 原文:W: Do you prefer going to the school library or the city library
M: I prefer the latter.
W: Why The school library is close and has got a lot of new books lately.
M: Yes, but it’s too crowded. The city library has more seats.
4. 原文:W: Honey have you seen Molly
M: She finished her homework and went out to watch a movie with her friends.
W: But didn’t she say she had a bit of a headache when she got up this morning
5. 原文:W: I’d like to discuss our latest plan for the project with you.
M: Sure. Do you have any advice
W: I don’t think our budget is very reasonable. We could cut down on expenses a bit more.
M: All right, I agree with you. How about the schedule
6-7.原文:M: Hey, have you watched the movie Avatar: Fire and Ash yet I just saw it, and it’s absolutely mind-blowing.
W: No, I am not sure if it’s as good as the previous ones.
M: It’s even better! The visual effects are next level. The story about the family’s struggle is also really touching. The most amazing part is that the movie runs 3 hours and 15 minutes.
W: Oh, that sounds great. Is the plot easy to follow
M: Totally. It has a clear storyline.
W: Well, I’ll watch it this weekend.
8-10. 原文:M: Sarah, you’ve been a marathon runner for over 15 years. What first got you into the sport
W: I was inspired by watching the London Marathon as a kid with my family. I joined a local running club the next week, and the feeling of freedom when I run just stuck with me.
M: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your training
W: Without doubt, it’s the mental battle during long runs. There are days when your legs burn and your mind screams to stop, but consistency is everything.
M: What keeps you going even when it gets tough
W: I always have the support of my family and my coach. But beyond that, it’s my love for marathon that keeps me going forever.
11- 13. 原文:W: Let’s check the menu. I’m trying to eat healthier, so I think I’ll start with a salad. What do you think
M: Hmm, salads are great, but the dressings here are loaded with sugar and fat. You might want to skip it.
W: Right, good point. Then maybe I’ll get some fruit juice to drink instead.
M: Most store-bought juices have barely any real fruit and are full of sugar. Water is a safer bet.
W: Okay. For dessert, I was thinking fat-free yogurt.
M: Wait, fat-free yogurt often has extra sugar added to make up for the lost flavor. Too much sugar isn’t any better for you than fat.
W: Wow. So I’ll just do a plain salad, water, and skip dessert. What about you
M: I was gonna order a double burger, but fine. I’ll copy your healthy order. Let’s go for the same.
【答案】14 -16. 原文:M: Hey, Jenny, have you finished the paper the professor assigned us yet I’ve been stuck on the topic selection for days.
W: Not yet. I’m still working on it, actually. I picked “Generative AI in Education” as my theme. Just read some reports about it, and it’s got so many mixed points to analyze.
M: Oh, that’s a really solid topic. I have mentioned both the pros and cons, but I’m not sure how to structure the risk part. Well, there’s self-thinking loss and social-emotional growth issues... so many points to cover.
W: Maybe you can list the risks one by one with specific examples, like how over-reliance on chat bots makes kids stop distinguishing truth from lies.
M: That’s such great advice. Thanks a lot, Jenny.
W: I’m glad I could help.
17-20.原文:W: Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome back to our school radio program. Today, let’s talk about a heartwarming trend: a new facility popping up in malls across China. The rise of “father and baby rooms.” Unlike traditional mother and baby rooms, these spaces focus on basic care, feeding, and rest. They are designed to encourage fathers to be more involved in taking care of the baby. This small change reflects a big shift in Chinese family values. Fathers are no longer just bread winners; they are becoming full partners in raising children. One expert said this evolution shows that our society is moving toward a more balanced model of shared parenting. So next time you visit a mall, keep an eye out for these rooms. They’re not just a place to rest; they’re a sign that parenting is becoming a team effort, one that benefits both children and families.

Every day after school, I would sit in my room, patiently practicing straight and smooth lines and sketching the apple trees, the bees, and the sunset over the orchard. I experimented with watercolors, mixing different shades of green and red. Though my initial attempts were awkward, I remained determined. Ms. Lopez checked on my progress weekly, giving me tips on how to blend colors and add depth. Mia, the girl from the club, even shared her watercolor set with me. With each stroke, I slowly gained confidence, and my fear of being“not creative” faded.
That weekend, I went to grandma’s orchard with my sketchbook. It was autumn, and the trees were laden with red apples. Surrounded by the familiar sights and scents I loved so deeply, I just painted what my heart felt. Grandma was busy picking apples when she spotted me painting. She approached silently, not wanting to interrupt. When I finished, I showed her the painting — a vibrant depiction of the orchard with her standing under a big apple tree. It felt so warm and real.Grandma’s eyes lit up with excitement.“This is beautiful,” she said. “You’ve captured our home perfectly.” For the first time, I realized that creativity wasn’t about perfection — it was about capturing and preserving the love and joy in the world around me.
