Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits The Exhibition
When Vincent van Gogh arrived in Arles, France, he befriended his neighbor and postman Joseph Roulin, along with his wife and three children. Van Gogh went on to paint several vibrant and expressive portraits of the Roulin family. This exhibition showcases about twenty of them, demonstrating his distinctively forward-thinking approach to portraiture.
Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits also reveals the significance of Van Gogh’s close friendship with Joseph Roulin amidst his arrival in a new town and struggles with mental health. The Roulin portraits appear alongside other works — including Japanese prints and Paul Gauguin paintings — that helped shape Van Gogh’s work during this period.

The toy industry is pushing forward with AI chat bots built into stuffed animals and mini robots. These toys are flexible enough to conduct limited conversations with children and to respond to them just as they finish talking. Are these interactions enough to provide the “personalized education” one company claimed Will toys like Curio’s Grem help or harm children’s language development
The more language that is addressed to children, the bigger their vocabulary will be. But these vocabulary words are not learned because they were spoken out of context, as current AI-infused toys do, but from caregivers who make the words come alive. Research shows that chatbot talk is unlikely to improve young children’s language outcomes. In fact, if allowed to replace conversations with caregivers, these toys may impede children’s language learning.
When a caregiver describes something that a child is interested in, children can learn its name. A chatbot is less able to teach children about their environments because it cannot see and describe a toy the child is holding. Even if it could see, it does not have prior knowledge about the toys a child owns. Language skills do not grow from simply hearing lots of words — they grow from hearing words in conversations that capture the child’s attention.
Finally, children are also seeking further information about the sounds of their language. The caregivers’ repetition of the word emphasizes its name while also giving the child more information about the sound of the word. If the child mispronounces the word, the caregiver will likely emphasize the correct pronunciation. Commercially available chatbots can’t reliably do this.
Quality language expands on what toddlers (学步的儿童) know, takes the child’s perspective and past history into consideration, and responds to children’s questions. We have seen some work that shows social robots can help preschool children learn vocabulary, and that conversational agents who ask older children to respond to educational television programs can help children learn. However, we need more research to know the effects these robots have on babies’ and toddlers’ language learning. Until that happens, we believe that the humans in toddlers’ lives are responsible for conducting the conversations that grow children’s language. As a researcher and his teammates state, “Our babies shouldn’t be lab mice for toy companies.”

While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to see Death Valley National Park on the California-Nevada border. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, “It’s very hot especially when there’s a gentle wind. You would think maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service’s website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.
28.What do most visitors do in Death Valley
A.Cool themselves in time. B.Do lots of physical exercises.
C.Stay away from park rangers. D.Carry dryers with themselves.
29.Why does the author mention the 65-year-old man in paragraph 2
A.To encourage the elderly to travel more.
B.To express admiration for mountain climbers.
C.To advise people to tour Death Valley more often.
D.To show the danger of traveling in Death Valley.
30.What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Death Valley
A.Its covering area. B.Its attractive spots.
C.The reason why it is so hot. D.The service of its park’s website.
31.What can be inferred about Death Valley from the last two paragraphs
A.It has a short history. B.It is worth visiting.
C.It draws fewer and fewer tourists. D.It is unsuitable for viewing sunrise.

Thousands of fish species - about 2,500 of them named - call the Amazon River home, but scientists estimate nearly half of the marine creatures lurking in the massive stretch of water remain undiscovered.
While studying piranhas (食人鱼) and pacus (淡水白鲳) in an effort to better assess vital fish biodiversity in the river, an international team of researchers has found and identified a new species of pacu, a piranha relative with a plant-based diet and humanlike teeth.
Besides its odd pearly whites, the newfound species has striking orange and black markings - including a bold vertical black bar stretching across its flank (侧面) - that the researchers say resemble the fiery eye symbol for the villain Sauron from “The Lord of the Rings” book and film series. The marks inspired the fish’s name, Myloplus sauron. The researchers hoped the pop culture reference would draw attention to the fish and efforts to protect biodiversity in the Amazon.
The eye-catching fish is not the only animal named for Sauron. A genus of butterflies was found in May 2023 with spots that looked like eyes on its wings, reminding researchers of the well-known symbol from the trilogy (三部曲).
Pacus are important to their ecosystem largely due to their role in spreading seeds through their diet of mostly fruit, which make them vital for the growth of rainforest trees and other plants. The fish tend to spread seeds far from their parent plants, helping to expand the forest and limit disease that easily spreads through crowded trees, said Matthew Kolmann, an assistant professor in the department of biology at the University of Louisville.
By discovering and identifying the species that live in certain ecosystems, researchers will be able to better lead conservation efforts to protect animals that are endangered or at risk, Kolmann said. It is particularly important for areas such as the Amazon that are under threat from habitat destruction, he added. “We run the very real risk of losing thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of species before we know they even exist, and by proxy, not ever understanding how these species contribute to a healthy functioning ecosystem,” Kolmann said. “Inventorying what species are found where, and when, is the first step in any future conservation effort.”
32.Why do scientists investigate piranhas and pacus in the Amazon River
A.To identify fish multiplicity.
B.To recognize a kind of new fish.
C.To prevent fishes from hurting people.
D.To inspire varied diet on people all over the world.
33.What can we learn from the genus of butterflies mentioned in Paragraph 4
A.They are biologically similar to the piranhas.
B.They engage the researchers’ interest in the trilogy.
C.They have fiery eyes on their wings indicating poison.
D.They get their name for the same reason with some fish.
34.What role do pacus play in the rainforest
A.Promoting the biodiversity among animals and plants.
B.Maintaining the sustainability of rainforest ecosystem.
C.Consuming fruits from rainforest trees to protect other plants.
D.Removing the disease spreading through trees due to crowdedness.
35.What is the main task of the researchers currently
A.The prevention of species loss.
B.The conservation of the Amazon.
C.The inclusion of the found species.
D.The protection of piranhas and pacus.

Could Viewing Art Be the Next Public Health Prescription (处方药)
In an era characterized by burnout and scrolling, a therapeutic (疗愈性的) alternative is hanging on a gallery wall. When volunteers at London’s Courtauld Gallery stood before masterpieces, their stress and inflammation (炎症) levels dropped compared with those of volunteers viewing reproductions. 36
That art can lift spirits is well known. 37 A study by King’s College London asked participants to look at masterworks by 19th-century post-impressionists while wearing sensors. Half the group saw the originals in the gallery, half viewed copies in a lab. The results were clear: going to art galleries is good for your physical health — relieving stress and cutting heart disease risk, as well as boosting the immune system.
38 Earlier this summer, a team of Cambridge psychologists conducted a similar project to show how appreciating artistic beauty helps escape the “mental trappings of daily life.” Besides, a Nature Magazine’s review suggests that art can play a role in public health. And for the first time in its long history, The Lancet recently ran a photo essay showcasing how art can enhance lives.
“When you experience an artwork, you don’t just see it, but you feel it,” the art historian Katy Hessel writes. “The best thing we can do is take time with it.” Time, of course, is what we are lacking in today’s fast-paced world. 39 Galleries are quiet, thoughtful places. We stop scrolling and start really looking. Deeply engaging with a work of art creates “psychological distancing” and enables us to see and take pleasure in what is not ourselves.
Today we are advised to exercise and eat healthily. 40 After all, science has spoken for this.
A.But that it calms the body is novel.
B.So we should make art more accessible to all.
C.There’s growing evidence to support that opinion.
D.Galleries bring us face to face with human genius.
E.But this seems to be key to art’s therapeutic powers.
F.Will doctors soon be prescribing a visit to a local gallery
G.Science suggests that original art is a medicine that one can view rather than swallow.

Grammer posted the image on Instagram. Those who were affected by the fire, 48 , could not calm down. Someone 49 , “You bring beauty and hope.”
Greatly inspired, Grammer returned eight times. Outside one house, he found a photo of a girl, Eleanor. He painted a picture of her on the wall of her home left 50 . It was a stamp that life was here and that life can 51 to be here. The painting has 52 meaning for the homeowner. Eleanor’s father, recalls how she used to play just feet away. Eleanor herself returned once to 53 the painting.
Ironically (讽刺的是) that first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, 54 only a few months — the bulldozer (推土机) is a cruel art critic. However, Grammer couldn’t be more delighted. It means that the 55 of Paradise is rising again.

Eddie valued his family’s accordion (手风琴) — a treasure passed down from his grandfather to his father, representing his Mexican-American family’s Tejano music tradition. Raised in a San Antonio neighborhood filled with Tejano rhythms, Eddie learned the instrument from his father and formed the band Las Estrellas (“The Stars”) with childhood friends: Luis on drums and Ruben on guitar.
Each day, Eddie hurried to Luis’s house for practice, struggling with the heavy accordion case while worrying about Ruben. Though a gifted guitarist who picked up songs quickly and loved playing with the band, Ruben hated practicing alone. He was always late, and his lack of solo (单独的) practice led to constant mistakes — a growing problem for the trio (三重奏).
Their lives changed when Luis handed Eddie an envelope from the Tejano Festival: an invitation to perform in just two months. The boys celebrated wildly, but Eddie’s joy was mixed with anxiety, hoping the opportunity would motivate Ruben to practice. That night, Eddie shared the news with his family. His father, a former festival winner, presented a trophy (奖杯) with “First Place” written on it and encouraged him, “You belong there and will shine.” Eddie admitted his worry about Ruben, who was too talented and dear a friend to replace. His father advised, “Find out why he won’t practice alone and help him.”
At their next practice, Ruben messed up the festival song at the very beginning. He claimed sore fingers from building a hut (简陋的小屋), but Luis accused him of skipping practice. Ruben got annoyed, and Eddie was angry. Following his father’s advice, Eddie asked Ruben why he didn’t play at home as he should. Ruben admitted, “My guitar sounds lonely alone, and I can’t focus.”
Upon learning where Ruben’s problem lay, Eddie decided to take immediate action to make practice fun for Ruben. On the way to Luis’s, Eddie came up with a plan: practice together at Ruben’s house daily. Luis agreed and they ordered Ruben’s favorite pizza for a surprise.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With pizza in hand, Eddie and Luis arrived at Ruben’s door.

1-2【原文】W: You look worried. Is everything okay with your history assignment
M: I got my draft back with so many comments. Professor Smith says my arguments aren’t supported by evidence.
W: Did you check the online library database There are lots of good sources there.
M: I did, but most articles are too difficult. Maybe I should choose an easier topic.
W: Don’t give up! The writing center tutors can help you analyze those articles.
3-5【原文】M: Good afternoon, dear listeners. In today’s program, I’d like to talk about a common exercise. Many people love running early in the morning. Why Actually it has many benefits. Not only will you begin a day more relaxed, but also you’ve already had a sense of achievement. If you’re also eager to enjoy the benefits of a morning run, try these. First, getting ready for a painful start. To many people, getting up early in the morning can be a great pain, especially in cold winter days. So early to bed, early to rise, and make it a habit. Of equal importance is to keep an open mind. Even if you’ve made enough preparation and determination, there are still times, when you want to quit. My advice is to accept the setback and instead of giving up, keep going. Another helpful way is to find someone to be together with you. This can make things more interesting. He or she not only gives you company, but also serves as a monitor.
6-8.【原文】W: It will be my last day working in this office. I’m going to miss you all.
M: Same here. We’ll miss your sense of humor around here. What’s your plan for the near future
W: I’ve decided to seek new challenges and explore different work environments. I’ll be spending most of my time on construction sites. It makes me feel good to put my new ideas into practice.
M: That’s why you studied architecture at university, right
W: Exactly. My cousin Joe is coming to visit me tomorrow. We’re going hiking this Saturday. Why not join us
M: Sounds like a plan. My work has been finished so far this Friday. I don’t have to work overtime on Saturday. Ah, I almost forgot. Here is a present Lily prepared for you.
W: She is the new secretary in our company. I never thought about that.
M: Actually, it’s our boss, Mr. Robinson’s idea.
W: That’s really touching.
9-11.【原文】W: Hi, Nancy. It has been a long time since the last time I saw you.
M: Yes, a year has passed since you moved away. I often miss the days when we lived in the same apartment. How are you doing
W: Not bad. It would be better if I had a job in the field of finance right now.
M: You are looking for a job Why
W: I’ve already finished my studies and graduated last week.
M: How long have you been looking for a job
W: I just started this week.
M: Didn’t you have any interviews with those firms that came to your campus
W: I only got one interview because of my punishing schedule. A month has gone by and I haven’t heard from them. I guess I didn’t make it. But I made sure I was on time anyway. Nothing is worse than being late for an interview.
M: Don’t worry, John. It helps to do some homework before you go to an interview. You need to know the company well.
W: I don’t know about this. I’ve only thought about questions they might ask me.
M: Oh yes, it also plays an important part.
12-14.【原文】Good morning, students. This is your headmaster speaking. Firstly, I’d like to welcome you all back. I hope this will be another excellent school year.
Many changes have taken place at the school over the summer. As well as a new group of students, we’re also welcoming some new members of staff. They’re Mr Smith, who will be teaching physics, Miss Chang, the new Chinese teacher and our new boys’ PE coach, Mr Black.
You will also notice several changes to the school puter classes will now take place in the new technology center, which is behind the teaching building. The old computer rooms are now a part of the library, which is now much bigger and collects thousands of new books. The school meeting hall has been much improved, and we now have a proper place to perform concerts and plays.
Though there are many changes in our school, the rules remain the same. Be on time, and always do your best. Thank you!
15 -17.【原文】W: In our English class today, we studied the months of the year. Ms Parks said that we knew our lessons and that we were excellent.
M: Do you speak only English in class or does your teacher explain everything to you in Spanish
W: Oh, no. We never speak Spanish in class! Ms Parks speaks to us only in English. Sometimes it is difficult to understand her, but she wants us to become used to hearing English.
M: I suppose she is right. Does she speak English very slowly
W: Not always. Sometimes we don’t understand her. Then she has to repeat what she says.
M: It must be interesting to study English.
W: I am the best student in the class. Ms Parks says that my pronunciation is very good.
M: Great! Is English pronunciation easy or difficult
W: Sometimes it is very difficult. Some words look different from the way one pronounces them.
18- 20.【原文】W: Hello. I purchased tickets online for your exhibit this Saturday, but the marathon held in the city center will cause transportation difficulties. It will be hard for me to get to the museum. How can I cancel the visit and get my money back
M: According to the museum’s policy, if your travel plans change, you may cancel your visit on our booking system and get your entrance fee back. But a cancellation fee will be charged in most cases, unless you are experiencing a significant schedule change or an exhibition cancellation.
W: Could I change the tickets
M: Yes, you can do that on the official website. Actually, if you plan to visit more times in the near future, a membership, especially the VIP card, would bring big cost saving for you.
W: Oh, I have too many financial burdens at the moment. Maybe in the future I’ll consider it. Thanks for your suggestion though.

Dear Editor,
I really appreciate the practice of playing TV programs at lunch break in the canteen. In my opinion, news programs would be a good choice.
The reasons for my recommendation are as follows. To start with, news programs, covering multiple fields such as politics, technology, economy and culture, help us move beyond textbooks, expand horizons and stay informed about current affairs. Additionally, we can develop a sense of social responsibility and civic engagement, laying the foundation to become contributing members of society.
Therefore, I believe news programs provide both a relaxing and enlightening atmosphere at lunchtime. Hopefully, we can enjoy them in the canteen soon! (90 words)
Best regards,
Li Hua

With pizza in hand, Eddie and Luis arrived at Ruben’s door. Ruben’s eyes widened in surprise when he opened the door, and his annoyance from the earlier argument melted away instantly. As they sat on the floor of his room, pizza boxes spread out, Eddie said, “We’re a band. We don’t practice alone — we practice together.” For the next two months, they showed up at Ruben’s house every afternoon. They laughed through mistakes, adjusted the song to highlight Ruben’s guitar skills, and turned practice into a joyful time. Ruben no longer felt lonely, and his playing became precise and full of passion.
Finally the big day came. The three boys stepped onto the stage, Eddie’s accordion glinting under the lights. When the first note rang out, they played in perfect harmony, Ruben’s solo shining brighter than ever. The audience cheered wildly as the final note faded. They didn’t just win the first prize that day — they learned that the best music, like the truest friendship, is never played alone.
