结构:was/were+V-ing
动词:多为延续性动词
延续性动词指动作可以延续一段时间,而不是瞬间结束。如:work、study、drive、eat等。
非延续性动词指动作极为短暂,瞬间结束。
如:start、begin、hit、jump、knock等。

Past continuous tense(过去进行时)
结构:was/were+V-ing
定义:
表示过去某一时刻或某段时间内正进行的动作
用法:
① 表示某一时刻正进行的行为,与特定的过去时间状语连用,聚焦具体时间点,常见的时间有:at 8 last night, at this time, at that time/moment 等。
e.g. What were you doing at 10 o’clock yesterday morning
② 表示动作在一段时间内持续进行,未完成;常用时间标志:from 8 to 10 yesterday morning, last winter;也可搭配while引导的时间状语从句
e.g. They were waiting for you from 8 to 10 yesterday morning.
过去进行时多用在叙事类文本中,起到提供背景和渲染氛围的作用,制造身临其境的效果。
动词:多为延续性动词

when: “当…的时候”, 既指时间点,又指时间段。
从句中动词可以是延续性动词,也可以是非延续性动词。
while: “在…的时候” “在…期间”
从句中动词必须是延续性动词。
(强调主从句的动作同时发生或主句动作发生在从句动作过程中)
