Frida Kahlo remains one of the most iconic and influential artists of the 20th century — not merely for her paintings, but for the extraordinary life she lived. With her traditional Mexican
dresses, and a resolute gaze that meets viewers, she created art that was deeply personal yet
universally resonant (产生共鸣的). “My painting contains in it the message of pain,” she once said.
Kahlo’s childhood was marked by adversity. At six, she was infected with polio, which
caused her right leg a slight limp. Yet the young Frida was spirited and unbowed. Her life
transformed at 18 when a bus accident left her seriously injured: her spine was broken in three
places, her pelvis crushed, and her right leg shattered in eleven places. She would later remark
with characteristic dark humor that the accident “took my virginity (贞洁)”. During months in bed, her mother placed a mirror above her and gave her paints. “I paint myself because I am often
alone and because I am the subject I know best,” she explained. Painting became both a lifeline and a means of documenting her reality.
Frida Kahlo produced around 200 paintings, most of them self-portraits. Though some
called her a Surrealist, Kahlo fiercely rejected the label. “I never painted dreams. I painted my
own reality,” she insisted. Her work mixed Mexican folk art with raw honesty about her suffering. In The Broken Column (1944), she showed herself with a cracked spine held together by nails.
Even her medical corsets (束身衣) that limited her body became canvases — she painted
butterflies on them. André Breton, the leader of the Surrealist movement, described her work as “a ribbon around a bomb’’.
Kahlo transformed suffering into art and personal tragedy into universal statements about the human condition. More than six decades after her death, she continues to attract audiences
because she remains utterly herself.
24 .What makes Frida Kahlo an influential figure
A .Her personal paintings. B .Her art and life story.
C .Her traditional dresses. D .Her pain and struggle.
25 .Why did Kahlo reject the Surrealist label
A .Because her art was based on her real life.
B .Because she preferred to be called a folk artist.
C .Because she claimed to be a painter of dreams.
D .Because her work was too universal for the label.
26 .What does Andre Breton imply by describing Kahlo’s work as “a ribbon around a bomb” in pharagraph 3
A .Kahlo’s art shows more pain than beauty. B .Kahlo’s art turns bombs into ribbons.
C .Kahlo’s art combines beauty with suffering. D .Kahlo’s art features ribbons and bombs.
27 .Which of the following best describes Kahlo
A .Tough and creative. B .Humorous and easy-going.
C .Dynamic and generous. D .Optimistic and self-centered.

Kissing is one of the most intimate (亲密的) human behaviours, yet its origins remain surprisingly mysterious. But why do humans kiss
Historically, kissing has held different meanings across cultures, with the earliest recorded human kiss documented in ancient Mesopotamian texts dating back to 2500 BCE. The ancient
Romans had three distinct types of kiss: the osculum, a social kiss on the cheek; the basium, a platonic kiss on the lips shared between partners or family; and the savium, a passionate kiss between lovers. Clearly, kissing has long been more than just a romantic gesture.
Despite its popularity, kissing is by no means universal. A study of 168 cultures published in American Anthropologist in 2015 found that only 46 percent practised romantic lip kissing. In cultures that don’t kiss, intimacy is expressed differently. Interestingly, when on his travels,
Charles Darwin, described the Malay kiss, where people squat and smell each other’s scent, suggesting that smell may play a role in human intimacy.
Can biology help us understand why we kiss Research suggests that kissing serves a
biological bonding function, as it triggers the release of oxytocin, a hormone linked to trust and attachment. Oxytocin helps reduce stress and fosters feelings of closeness, strengthening
connections between romantic partners.
Besides, evolutionary theories suggest that lip-to-lip kissing may have its roots in early maternal (母系的) behaviours, like mothers chewed food before transferring it to their baby’s mouth. This practice, still observed among chimpanzees, may have laid the foundation for lip
contact as a signal of care and bonding.
However, a recent theory proposed by evolutionary psychologist Dr Adriano Lameira
suggests that kissing may have instead evolved from grooming (梳理毛发) behaviours. In
primates, grooming often ends with mouth contact. As humans gradually lost body hair, Lameira suggests that the function of grooming diminished, leading to shorter grooming time, eventually leaving the final lip-to-lip kiss as a lasting gesture of affection.
Seemingly, kissing is a complex behaviour shaped by our ancient ancestors, fulfilling a deep human need for connection.
28 .Why does the author mention ancient Romans’ kissing in paragraph 2
A .To prove kissing originated in ancient Rome.
B .To illustrate kissing has various social meanings.
C .To show romantic kissing is the most important type.
D .To highlight kissing has been simply a romantic gesture.
29 .Which of the following do evolutionary theories suggest
A .Kissing is universally practiced across cultures.
B .Kissing is intended to strengthen romantic bonds.
C .Kissing may have feeding and grooming origins.
D .Kissing has developed from maternal behaviours.
30 .What does the underlined word “diminished” in paragraph 6 mean
A .Enhanced. B .Declined. C .Disappeared. D .Expanded.
31 .How is the text developed
A .Opinion→Evidence→Summary B .Question→Argument→Application
C .Question→Exploration→Conclusion D .Phenomenon→Argument→Conclusion

Recently a new study published in Nature Cell Biology looked into how the cells
responsible for the pigments (色素) in our hair and skin “self-destruct” when damaged, as part of our bodies’ efforts to protect us from cancer. The scientists found that, in the face of specific types of damage, these pigment-producing cells simply shut themselves down instead of continuing to
divide. This response prevents faulty cells from spreading dangerous mutations (变异), but over
time, it also means fewer pigment-making cells remain, causing hair to turn grey.
Scientists have long explored ways to stop pigment cells from self-destructing to prevent
greying, but the new findings suggest your greys are a sign of an important anti-cancer defence.
“The study reframes hair greying and melanoma (黑素瘤) not as unrelated events, but as different outcomes of stem cell stress responses,” said Prof Emi Nishimura from the University of Tokyo, who led the study.
Her team made the discovery while studying melanocyte stem cells in mice. They found the cells only sacrificed themselves when their DNA experienced a “double-strand break” — a clean snap through both sides of the DNA helix. But when the cells were exposed to other kinds of
stress, such as ultraviolet (紫外的) light or carcinogens, they didn’t self-destruct. Instead, they
survived and kept dividing, allowing mutations to build up and potentially lay the groundwork for cancer.
This two-track response could help reveal why grey hair and skin cancers both become more frequent with age. While research is in its earlier stages and complex lifestyle and genetic factors are also at play, the scientists say that understanding and eventually controlling this
response could open the door to new ways of removing high-risk cells before they become cancerous.
32 .What happens to pigment cells when damaged according to the study
A .They stopped working. B .They spread mutations.
C .They continued to divide. D .They destroyed themselves.
33 .What can be concluded from the discovery by Prof Emi Nishimura’s team
A .Stem cells had different responses to different types of stress.
B .Stem cells stopped dividing when exposed to ultraviolet light.
C .Stem cell could be stopped self-destructing to prevent greying.
D .Stem cells failed to self-destruct with DNA double-strand breaks.
34 .What’s the author’s attitude towards the research
A .Critical. B .Doubtful. C .Optimistic. D .Indifferent.
35 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .Grey Hairs: Scars ofthe Body’s Anti-Cancer War
B .Pigment Cells: Self-Destruction to Prevent Greying
C .Stem Cells: Breakthrough in Unlocking the DNA Secrets
D .Double-strand Breaks: DNA’s Self-sacrifice in Cancer Defence

A recent report, published in The Lancet in 2025, found that more than half of the world’s population struggles to access healthy diets. This doesn’t just impact our health and well-being,
but also has real consequences on our environment, with around 30% of all the greenhouse gasses we produce coming from our food systems. 36
Enter the planetary health diet (PHD) — a recommendation that can not only improve our health, but also reduce diet-related chronic disease, and potentially reduce the food-related
emissions we make by an impressive 50% by 2050. 37
But what actually is the PHD
38 It recommends at least five portions of fruit and veg a day, a portion of
legumes, a portion of nuts, and plenty of whole grains. Animal products aren’t necessarily off the menu altogether, but it’s suggested that chicken, fish, and red meat play a much smaller role in
your diet. It also suggests consuming seasonally available foods, with flexibility for different cultures centred around local dishes and produce.
Why should we follow it
The environmental benefits of the PHD could be huge, purely from its reduction of
animal-produce. It offers flexibility without requiring the full commitment of going meat-free. 39 It could prevent 11 million premature adult deaths every year, and is linked with reducing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even cancer.
How can we follow it
40 The PHD isn’t about a huge diet transformation, but consistent small steps that make a massive impact. A simple way to begin is to adjust your plate division, eat a “rainbow” of fruit and veg, and gradually reduce daily meat consumption. Even following a few of its core ideas can bring great benefits for your health and the environment.
A .Evidence reveals that it comes with notable health benefits, too.
B .It sounds like a win-win for both our own well-being and the world.
C .The PHD’s environmental benefits come fully from vegan principles.
D .You don’t need to completely change your eating habits to follow the PHD.
E .The PHD is centred around a plant-rich diet, but with a more flexible approach.
F .The PHD has become the most popular dietary trend in countries across the world.
G .These findings have set off alarm bells among health and environmental experts worldwide.

Maybe it was her name, Lainey, that caused my little female cat so much confusion.
Whatever the reason, she was simply not interested in chasing birds or catching mice. Weighing in at only three pounds, Lainey was most happy on someone’s lap or sitting on the porch (走廊)
watching all the activities in the back yard.
Skinny, Lainey’s mother, was an expert hunter. Even with warning bells on her collar, she had no trouble catching the birds and mice unlucky enough to venture into our yard. Skinny took her job as a mother seriously, trying to teach Lainey to hunt. But Lainey would just stretch slowly and walk away.
My husband Paul and I were newly married and expecting a child. We had the cats moved in with the hope that they would adjust to their new home and take the role of keeping our baby company.
We had a sliding glass door in our dining room. It opened onto a deck (平台) and the back yard. But while Lainey loved to just look out the window, Skinny paced and meowed by the deck door. She also settled herself on the back of a chair. It became her favorite lookout spot. After a week Skinny seemed to be settling in and I relaxed. But when the deck door was left open
accidentally, she raced outside, never to be seen again.
Lainey wandered depressedly around the house for a couple of weeks. She’d often sniff
curiously at the newly set up nursery door, her head tilted as if listening to a future only she could sense. Paul would stroke her fur and say, “Don’t worry, Lainey. You’ll have a new, very
important job soon.” I wasn’t sure what he meant, but Lainey would purr in response.
“Do you think Lainey has grown ” I asked Paul.
“I think so,” he said.
Lainey double d in size. She walked with a little more swagger (神气). She puffed out her fur and swished (甩动) her tail. She settled herself in Skinny’s lookout spot.
“I swear Lainey looks like Skinny now,” I said.
“She really does, especially when she swishes her tail. I wonder what she’ll do next,” Paul said.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Later on, we started leaving the deck door open so Lainey could go in and out whenever she wanted.

Good evening, everyone. Welcome to Nine O’clock News. Today, two people have been rescued after their hot air balloon struck a radio tower more than 900 feet above the ground. The
Longview firefighters were sent to the radio tower around 8:15 a.m. Both men were pulled from the balloon’s basket about 11:00 a.m. The operation took roughly four hours from the time the
firefighters began climbing until the two riders reached the ground. Stephen Winchell, a leader
with the Longview Fire Department, who has about 18 years of rope rescue experience, said the
height of the tower exceeded anything he had previously encountered. His previous highest tower work was about 350 feet. Cliff Patrick, a 16-year veteran of the department, said six rope systems had to be used at different points along the tower because the riders were stuck at such a great
height. The firefighters also used drones to monitor conditions and confirm the exact height of the crashed balloon during the operation.

Dear Chris,
How have you been I’m thrilled to share an enlightening experience from last month’s
“Art for a Healthy Life” event at my school. I immersed myself in a watercolor painting
workshop, crafting a serene riverside scene. With gentle brushstrokes and delicate color blending, I brought the tranquil scene to life on paper.
This experience left me profoundly aware of how art soothes the mind and uplifts the spirit. Each stroke offered a quiet escape from daily stress — truly a powerful reminder of art’s role in
nurturing a healthy life.
Have you ever tried painting or any form of art to relax I’d love to hear your story.

Dear Chris,
Hope this email finds you well. I’m thrilled to share my memorable experience from “Art for a Healthy Life” initiative launched at our school last month.
I enrolled in a traditional Chinese calligraphy workshop. Guided by an experienced
instructor, I held the brush and practiced every stroke attentively. The moment my first character took shape on the rice paper, a sense of tranquility and fulfillment welled up inside me.
This encounter illuminated the close connection between artistic expression and
psychological wellness. It helped me slow down, stay focused and regain inner balance in our
fast-paced life. Art, I’ve realized, heals not by fixing troubles but by offering space for our soul to rest and refresh.
I truly hope you can experience the charm of Chinese calligraphy someday.
Yours,
Li Hua

We believed that Lainey, who grew into a hunter just like Skinny, would do well in her new job. When our baby arrived, Lainey, once so aloof, transformed into a devoted guardian. She
would curl up beside the baby bed, her watchful eyes never straying far from the sleeping infant. If the baby stirred, she was there in an instant, purring softly as if to offer comfort. In her quiet, determined way, Lainey had found her purpose — not merely as a hunter, but as a protector.
Skinny had passed on more than hunting skills; she had left behind a legacy of devotion, carried on by the daughter who had finally come into her own.
