Back in 2003, Erica Hernandez was just a kid helping 20 adults take care of the beach.
They overheard a plan to build a processing station for natural gas 14 miles off the coast of
Oxnard. The plan would send over 200 tons of air pollution per year to Erica’s community. Not
only that, the station would take in millions of gallons of seawater per day to cool its generators, and discharge the water more than 15 degrees centigrade hotter than the surrounding ocean. This hot wastewater would cause serious harm to the surrounding ecosystem, killing tiny creatures and small fish crucial to the survival of marine mammals and fisheries.
Erica cared too much to stay silent. She joined her friends in weekly protests at the office of the natural gas company. Prospects of stopping the project did not look good. The governor was in favor of it, and so were the powerful state commissions that would have to approve it. “The word on the street was that there was nothing we could do.”
Behind the scenes, however, opposition was growing, so Erica became the spokesperson for the youth of the town. She regularly walked her neighborhood along the route of the proposed
pipeline, using a hula hoop to show people the size of the pipe that would pass by their houses.
She talked to the media, and stories about the dangers ofthe proposed facility(设施) began
appearing in the press. “We made thousands of phone calls and sent thousands of postcards telling the governor why this facility was a bad idea.” In July 2007, the governor made an unexpected
move: He turned down the project. Erica and her friends won!
As only the second person in her family to go to college, Erica wants to become an
environmental lawyer so she can fight for the environment and for the rights of communities. She wants other young people to speak out when they see something wrong, even if they feel shy
about it at first. She likes to quote the words of her role model, Cesar Chavez: “We are the future. The future is ours.”
24 .What can be learned about the planned processing station
A .It would be climate-damaging.
B .It would depend on seawater to clean generators.
C .It was designed to provide local energy.
D .It would do harm to local ecosystem.
25 .What does “The word on the street” in paragraph 2 probably refer to
A .The official announcement
B .The common belief among people
C .The false news spread by the media
D .The instruction from the government
26 .Which of the following can best describe Erica
A .idealistic and friendly B .brave and determined
C .patient and organized D .creative and artistic
27 .What can we learn from Erica’s story
A .Courage is always rewarded in the end.
B .Success relies on teamwork and cooperation.
C .Young people can make a difference if they speak up.
D .Environmental protection should come before economic development.

The bystander effect(旁观者效应) is a social psychological theory which takes place when the presence of others discourages an individual from taking steps in a troubling situation, such as a car accident, a crime or other wrongdoings. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that anyone of them will provide help for a person in need. People tend to act in an emergency
when there are few or no other people present.
About six decades ago, researchers connected the bystander effect with two factors: the
diffusion of responsibility and social influence. The former means the more bystanders there are, the less personal responsibility individuals will feel to take action. Social influence means that
individuals observe the behavior of those around them to decide how to respond.
Under the bystander effect, those left without aid may feel disconnected, experience
increased pain and decreased self-worth, as well as suffer stress-related aftereffects. Besides, trust issues may come up, making it hard to build relationships, causing these people to pull away
socially for fear of being ignored.
One way to address the bystander effect is to behave as if one is the first or only person to see a problem. Often, when one person makes a move, even if just to shout “Hey, what’s going on ”, others may be encouraged to help people in trouble as well. That is to say, an active
bystander is most effective when they assume that they themselves are the only person taking charge.
It is also important for individuals to develop moral virtues. Try to see the situation from
the viewpoint of the victims. Worry less about the consequences of giving a helping hand and
think more about the example you are setting for future generations. If you are the affected person, pick out one person in the crowd and make eye contact. People’s natural drive to be kind and
helpful may make it hard for them to reject your request for help.
28 .How is the first paragraph mainly developed
A .By presenting research findings
B .By defining a concept
C .By comparing different situations
D .By giving an example
29 .The underlined word “diffusion” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to .
A .taking over B .fading away
C .building up D .spreading out
30 .What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A .The bystander effect’s negative impacts on victims.
B .The harm bystanders may suffer after taking action.
C .Emotions shown by victims in dangerous situations.
D .Possible changes of passive bystanders in an emergency.
31 .According to the article, how can individuals reduce the bystander effect
A .Try to learn some first-aid skills.
B .Approach issues from others’ standpoint.
C .Think about the possible consequences before offering help.
D .Make eye contact with the victims.

Generative AI has brought great convenience to many creative fields, making artists’ work much easier. But it has also caused a fierce fight over the rights of digital artists. Now, a new tool called GlitchGuard has appeared as a powerful helper to protect artists’ creations.
Artists can add hidden “glitch codes (代码)” to their digital artworks before uploading them online. These hidden codes act like an effective protection against AI companies that use artists’
works without asking for permission or paying them to train their image-making models. By using GlitchGuard to “poison” the training data, artists can disturb future AI models: turning lively
landscapes into strange pictures, human images into unrecognizable shapes, and abstract designs into meaningless patterns(图案).
Generative AI is very good at recognizing visual patterns, so the glitch codes can spread
quickly through its systems. It does not just target certain art styles, such as anime or watercolor, it also affects related visual concepts, like how brushstrokes look and how colors mix together. Even indirect images can be influenced. For example, if a poisoned picture is used for training, the AI
will also produce strange images when given words like “dragon” or “a castle in a film”.
Some AI companies are now facing lawsuits from artists, who accuse them of stealing
original works and violating intellectual property rights without permission. Dr. Elara Voss, a
computer science professor at Stanford University who led the creation of GlitchGuard, says the tool aims to give power back to creators and protect their copyrights. She also admits that while the tool might be misused, it takes thousands of poisoned samples to successfully disturb
large-scale AI models trained on billions of data points. Major AI companies have responded by letting artists exclude their works from future training data, but artists argue these measures are
not enough. They hope GlitchGuard can reshape the current situation and make AI companies think twice before acting.
32 .What can GlitchGuard do
A .Add hidden codes to artworks.
B .Improve artists’ drawing skills.
C .Sell artworks online.
D .Copy others’ works.
33 .Which statement is TRUE about glitch codes based on Paragraph 3
A .They mainly work by changing the words given to AI.
B .They only change the images that are directly edited.
C .They are easy for AI systems to recognize and fix.
D .They affect both art styles and related visual details.
34 .What is Dr. Elara Voss’ attitude toward GlitchGuard
A .fully supportive B .cautiously optimistic
C .generally unconcerned D .firmly opposed
35 .What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text
A .To criticize AI companies for stealing artists’ works.
B .To introduce a new tool to solve artists’ concerns about AI.
C .To explain how generative AI learns visual patterns from data.
D .To warn digital artists about the risks of sharing works online.

The Power of Habit
Habits, the automatic behaviors we perform daily, significantly shape our lives.
Understanding how they form can empower us to change them. The habit loop, as described by researchers, consists of a cue, a routine, and a reward. 36 The routine is the behavior
itself, and the reward is the benefit gained, which reinforces the loop.
To build a new positive habit, start small. 37 For instance, if you want to read
more, don’t aim for an hour a day initially; commit to just ten minutes. Consistency is far more important than intensity in the beginning.
38 Trying to break a bad habit Identify the cue that triggers it and the reward it provides. Then, experiment with replacing the routine with a healthier behavior that delivers a similar reward. For example, if stress (cue) leads you to eat junk food (routine) for comfort
(reward), try a short walk or meditation instead.
39 It can be strengthened with practice but also fatigued with overuse. Therefore, structure your environment to support your goals. Reduce the need for willpower by making good habits easier (e.g.. placing fruit on the counter) and bad habits harder (e.g., not keeping snacks in the house).
Belief is also a critical component, especially when facing challenges. Believing that you can change is essential for success. Joining a group or having an accountability partner can
provide crucial support and reinforce the belief that change is possible. 40
A .The cue is the trigger that initiates the behavior.
B .Replacing an existing habit can be more effective than simply removing it.
C .Bad habits are impossible to break once formed.
D .Willpower is like a muscle.
E .Large goals are always better for habit formation.
F .Remember, transforming habits is a journey, not a single event.
G .Aim for a manageable goal that you can achieve consistently.

It was a weekend. I had already planned to hang out with my friends. However, my mother called after work, her voice filled with childlike excitement. She explained that her company was having a spring outing the next day and asked if I could stop by the bakery on my way home to
buy her a bag of coconut bread for lunch.
Without even thinking, I refused, telling her I couldn’t spare time because I had already
made plans with my friends. She bargained with me for a long time, insisting that it’s just buying a bag of bread — it wouldn’t take long or delay me. She was almost angry by the end ofit, so I
reluctantly (勉强地) agreed.
But as soon as I saw the bakery from a distance, my heart sank. The store was packed, with a long queue snaking all the way outside. I couldn’t help but groan (叹息) hopelessly. A: the line inched forward, I kept checking the time, standing on tiptoe to look ahead, dizzy from hunger. I
couldn’t understand my mother — why wouldn’t she just stay home and rest on a weekend Spring outings were for kids!
Just then, someone behind me called softly, “Miss.”
I turned around, seeing a middle-aged woman I didn’t recognize. Annoyed, I asked impatiently, “What ”
Her smile was almost humble. “Look, I’m just one person behind you, but that means I’ll
have to wait for another batch (一批). I’m buying this for my son — he’s going on a spring outing tomorrow. I still need to rush home to cook dinner and take him to his tutoring class. If you’re not in a hurry, I was wondering if...”
“Who are you buying for ” she asked.
Without hesitation, I answered, “For my mom. She’s going on a spring outing tomorrow.” For some reason, as soon as I said that, the entire bakery fell into silence. All eyes turned toward me.

M: What did you find this time
W: Do you remember we studied music by Beethoven yesterday I found a CD with some of his best-known music.
M: Oh yes. I think that Ode to Joy is one of the most joyful pieces of music ever written.
W: I agree, but he had many unhappy times during his life.
M: He seemed “born to win” as a musician. He first studied music with his father in Germany. He published his first music at the age of 12 in 1782, played in private concerts, and had his first
public concert in 1795.
W: I also remember that he began to lose his hearing gradually later. Was that the end of his music career

W: Oh dear. Well, I’d better contact the people from Elgar Plastics then, and find out their availability for next week. I’ll email them explaining the problem.
M: No, I’d prefer you to call them. They’re not going to be very happy about this, and on the
phone you’ll be able to explain the situation better than in an email message. Sometimes it’s better to contact clients by phone.
W: OK, but I’ll email our team to announce the postponement.
17 .C 18 .A 19 .B 20 .B
M: Hi, I’m Kris, and I’m the president of the College Environmental Awareness Club. Before we get started, I’d like to thank everyone for coming down to the lake today to help with

here at the lake area. We’ll begin by dividing into two ten-person teams. One team will pick up
garbage in the picnic area and along the jogging path, and one will collect garbage found along the bank of the lake. We’ll be putting the garbage in these plastic bags. Throw any bottles and cans
you find into these boxes, and we’ll take them to the recycling centre later. A local company has
donated these“Do Not Litter”signs to the club. So we’ll need a couple of people to place them
around the lake when we are finished. OK, anyone who wants to clean up around picnic tables and along the jogging path, raise your hands.

She wants other young people to speak out when they see
something wrong , even if they feel shy about it at first.(她希望其他年轻人在看到问题时勇敢发声,即使一开始会感到害羞。)”
28 .B 29 .D 30 .A 31 .B
根据第一段中“The bystander effect(旁观者效应)is a social psychological
theory which takes place when the presence of others discourages an individual from taking steps
in a troubling situation, such as a car accident, a crime or other wrongdoings.(旁观者效应是一种 社会心理学理论,当其他人在场时,一个人不愿在令人不安的情况下采取措施,比如车祸、犯罪或其他不法行为,就会发生旁观者效应)”可知,作者定义了“旁观者效应”(defining a
根据画线词的下文对“the diffusion of responsibility” 的解释“The former means the more bystanders there are, the less personal responsibility individuals will feel to take
根据第三段“Under the bystander effect, those left without aid may feel
disconnected, experience increased pain and decreased self-worth, as well as suffer stress-related
aftereffects. Besides, trust issues may come up, making it hard to build relationships, causing these people to pull away socially for fear of being ignored.(在旁观者效应下,那些没有得到帮助的人可能会感到疏离,经历更多的痛苦和降低自我价值,以及遭受与压力相关的后遗症。 故选 A 项。
根据最后一段中“Try to see the situation from the viewpoint of the victims(受害者).(试着从受害者的角度看问题)”可知,作者建议通过换位思考来缓解旁观者效应。故选B 项。
32 .A 33 .D 34 .B 35 .B
第二段中“Artists can add hidden “glitch codes(代码)” to their digital artworks before uploading them online. These hidden codes act like an effective protection against AI
companies that use artists’ works without asking for permission or paying them to train their
故选 A。
根据第三段中“It does not just target certain art styles, such as anime or
watercolor, it also affects related visual concepts, like how brushstrokes look and how colors mix
together.”
Elara Voss... says the tool aims to give power back to
creators and protect their copyrights.” 以及“She also admits that while the tool might be misused...”

36. A 上文“The habit loop, as described by researchers, consists of a cue, a routine, and a
故选 A。
37.G 上文 To build a new positive habit, start small.(要养成一个新的积极习惯,从小事做起)”建议养成新习惯时要从小事做起,下文“For instance, if you want to read more, don’t aim for an hour a day initially, commit to just ten minutes.
38.B 下文“Trying to break a bad habit Identify the cue that triggers it and the reward it provides. Then, experiment with replacing the routine with a healthier behavior that delivers a similar
39.D 空格后的句子提到“It can be strengthened with practice but also fatigued with overuse”(它可以被练习增强,也会因过度使用而疲劳)。
另外,前文强调“Belief is also a critical component”以及“Joining a group or having an accountability partner”等具体方法。

67 .Paragraph 1
She asked loudly, “Who did you say you’re buying for ” I repeated, a bit nervously, “For my mom.” She looked at me with a mixture of surprise and admiration and said, “You’re such a good daughter. Your mom must be very happy.” At that moment, I felt a rush of shame. I realized that I had been so impatient and reluctant to do this small thing for my mother, while this woman was so eager to buy something for her son. I thought about how much my mother had done for me over
the years, and how little I had given back.
Paragraph 2
The woman ahead of me turned around and asked me to go first. She said, “You should go ahead. Your mom is going on a spring outing too. It’s important.” I was touched by her kindness. I tried to refuse, but she insisted. So, I thanked her and moved to the front ofthe line. When I finally got the coconut bread, I held it tightly in my hands. I couldn’t wait to give it to my mother and tell her that I was sorry for my earlier attitude. I realized that even the smallest act of kindness for our parents can mean a lot to them.
