As the temperature drops, it’s not just about warm sweaters and hot chocolate. Cold
weather can actually have a big impact on your health. Let’s learn something so as to stay safe and healthy this season!
Why Is Cold Winter A Challenge
Winter brings more than just colds. Icy sidewalks can lead to slips and falls. Cold air may also harm your lungs and heart, raising the risk of chest infections especially for the elders.
Fighting Off Winter Illnesses
Most common winter illnesses can be handled at home. However, flu can be more serious than you think. A flu vaccine is a simple way to protect you. And don’t forget the power of hand washing! Cleaning up with water, adding soap if possible, on a regular basis is one of the most
convenient ways to stop virus like the flu from spreading. Keep your house warm and your
bedroom window closed especially on cold winter nights as breathing cold air can be bad for your health.
Layer Up: A Good Way To Keep Warm
Staying warm is your secret weapon this season! When heading outside, wear several light layers instead of one heavy jacket. The trapped air between layers keeps you much warmer. You can try the 3-Layer Rule:
(
Note
:
Don
’t
forget
the
hat
,
scarf
and
gloves—40
% of

your head
and

Stay Active: Don’t Let The Cold Make You A Couch Potato!
Staying active is crucial for both physical and mental health. If you’re stuck indoors, get up and stretch your body at least once in an hour. Break up your time spent being inactive by walking around your home or standing up from your chair when you are on phone. Any movement helps
boost your mood and keep your body strong.
With these easy tips, you can enjoy the winter while staying happy and healthy. Check out further advice on how to stay well this winter on our websites. Stay warm, stay active, and take care!

One day, Amanda was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer of an early stage. During this time, she was admitted to a college. She planned to save money to meet the college expense and then seek
medical treatment for the cancer.
Her father, Clint and her friends didn’t want her to put off her treatment due to the expense. They took matters into their own hands and started a GoFundMe campaign. A longtime friend of the family was cofounder of a group named Praynksters, known for random acts of kindness. The friend decided to use their own group to help the family. The group came up with the creative idea to spread the word and invite families, friends, and strangers who wanted to help to take part in a donation activity. The event brought about the enormous assistance from the local community.
Clint and Amanda were moved as the crowd passed by and the donations poured in. The
event brought the family over $13, 000 in donations to go towards her medical treatments. The
generous act of kindness gave the family a comforting, and optimistic feeling during a time when all hope seemed lost. Clint said that Amanda struggled with the idea of asking for help. She felt guilty and undesirable compared to others who are also struggling. She is still humbled by it all.
After several months of treatment, life for the family has started getting back to their
normal routine. Once Amanda got her strength back, she returned to school and completed her
bachelor’s degree. The family is now inspired to volunteer in their local neighborhood and

A recent survey found children would rather be online influencers (网红) than astronauts. It made headlines and led to plenty of complaints about “kids these days”. Is influencing a promising career path The lifestyles we see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining
appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality, disability and mental health issues.
Successful influencers will be the first to claim that anyone can make it in the industry. However, social media economy experts uncovered a huge income gap between successful
influencers and everyone else. For most people trying to become an influencer, their passion projects of content creation often become free work for brands.
Most influencers are self-employed, often experiencing inconsistent income and a lack of
protection that comes with long-term employment. The risks of self-employment are increased in the influencer industry by an absence of industry standards and little pay transparency. Influencers are often forced to assess their own value and determine fees for their work. As a result, content
creators often undervalue their own creative labour, and many end up working for free.
Influencers are also often at the mercy of algorithms — the behind-the-scenes computer programs that determine which posts are shown, in which order, to users. Platforms share little detail about their algorithms, yet they finally determine who and what gains visibility and
influence on social media. The threat of invisibility is a constant source of insecurity for
influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content. If they don’t, they may be “punished” by the algorithm — having posts hidden or displayed lower down on search results.
Constant online presence leads to one of the most common issues in the influencer industry: mental health concerns. Influencers can connect to their platform workspaces and audience at any time of day or night, which can lead to them overworking. Coupled with the fear of online
criticism, it contributes to mental and physical health issues.
Although becoming an influencer may look appealing to more and more people, the
industry’s dark underside needs to be made visible and improved through enhanced employment regulation and industry-led cultural change.
28 .Which of the following words cans replace “enticing” in Paragraph 1
A .Imaginative. B .Similar. C .Attractive. D .Traditional.
29 .What’s one of the reasons for influencers’ undervaluing their creative work
A .Standardized protection. B .Invisibility of payment.
C .Assessment of own work. D .Passion for content creation.
30 .What may cause the influencers’ stress according to Paragraph 4
A .Having to work out the order of posts to be displayed.
B .Finding it difficult to create new content constantly.
C .Having little knowledge of platform algorithms.
D .Being unequally punished by platforms.
31 .Why does the author write this text
A .To show the dark side of working as an online content creator.
B .To reveal relationships between platforms and influencers.
C .To stress the importance of visibility in the online world.
D .To describe the life of self-employed content creators.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has become a crucial tool in ecological research over recent years. By analyzing water, soil, or other environmental materials for DNA pieces, researchers can
tell that thousands of different species have been in an area without having to observe the actual species passing through.
To date, this eDNA process has mostly been employed to detect marine (海洋的) creatures, insects, and other wildlife. However, according to a paper published in Nature Ecology &
Evolution, this technique could just as easily be applied to spot humans.
An international team of researchers based at the University of Florida, USA, demonstrated that human genomic (基因组的) information can be easily detected in eDNA samples collected
from water, sand, and even the air. While this capability could have practical applications, such as aiding in the search for missing persons or monitoring public health, the researchers highlight
significant moral concerns. These concerns include the lack of agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches (侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of genetic
information being used for commercial purposes.
This issue is particularly challenging for the field of eDNA, which relies on open and easily accessible data. “It is standard practice in science to make these data publicly available. However, this also means that if human information is not screened out, anyone could access this
information,” says senior author Professor David Duffy, a wildlife disease genomics researcher at the University of Florida. “This raises issues around permission. Do we need to ask permission to collect these samples Should we bring in some controls to remove human genetic data ”
“Whenever we make a technological advancement, there are both beneficial and concerning potential uses. This situation is no different,” Duffy explains. “We are raising these issues early so that policymakers and society have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.”
32 .What is the primary use of eDNA in ecological research
A .Identifying species present in an area. B .Monitoring species evolution processes.
C .Improving living conditions for wildlife. D .Sampling insects directly in their habitats. 33 .Why is the accessibility of eDNA data a potential problem
A .It ignores practical applications of eDNA data.
B .It may lead to unchecked genetic engineering.
C .It could result in misuse of human genetic data.
D .It raises concerns about wildlife disease research.
34 .What does Duffy suggest people concerned do
A .To develop potential applications. B .To sample genetic information.
C .To highlight advanced technology. D .To establish appropriate regulations.
35 .What is the best title for the text
A .eDNA: A New Frontier in Ecological Monitoring
B .eDNA: Human Detection Meets Privacy Challenges
C .eDNA: A Breakthrough in Marine Research Techniques
D .eDNA: Transforming Our Comprehension of Biodiversity

When I landed in a small town in New Zealand as an exchange student, I thought I was
ready for everything — new faces, language barriers, strange social patterns and even
homesickness. Still, the smallest things made me feel out of place.
Luckily, the Wilsons, my host family, did everything they could to help me settle in —
driving me around, sharing meals, and even letting me use their kitchen when. I. missed Chinese food. With their warmth and support, everything seemed to fall into place.
But at school, small moments felt bigger than I’d imagined. In our first literature class, we discussed a Hemingway story. Everyone jumped in actively, while I struggled to speak up. My
desk-mate encouraged me, “Next time, just speak up.” I nodded, forcing a bitter smile.
And just like that, I found myself in another cultural trap, Mrs. Wilson’s birthday dinner. At the table, I answered politely but kept mostly to myself. Mrs. Wilson noticed my silence and
gently asked, “You alright, sweet girl You’ re so quiet tonight.” My face reddened. Was my silence seen as cold, rather than polite
That night, restless and wide awake, I wondered if I needed to laugh louder, speak faster; or hide parts of myself just to feel I belonged. Questions flooded my mind, none with answers.
A few days later, our teacher announced there would be a Culture Festival next week.
“You’ ll prepare a stand to share your own culture — food, crafts, customs ... anything
meaningful. You can not only display your culture but also make it interactive, allowing people to try new things, learn traditional skills. or share stories and cultural symbols,” she said. The class lit up with excitement. I sat frozen, mind racing: how could I share my traditions in English The
thought made my stomach twisted (扭曲). Yet, I gathered myself with a deep breath and signed up. After that, I threw myself wholeheartedly into preparations, until the day finally came.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 个左右;

W: Did you win in the London Marathon, Henry
M: No. A competitor fell to the ground, so I helped him up. When he fell down again, I decided to support him to the finish line 200 meters away. So I didn’t win.
W: Well, though you didn’t win, you’ve done something better than that.
4 .B
W: I’ll have the steak, French fries, and let’s see, chocolate ice cream for dessert.

M: What about our neighbor Melinda
W: Yes, of course.
M: Am I allowed to invite anyone
W: You can invite one friend, but that’s it.
M: Fine. I’ll invite Mike. You should have a winter-themed party. If Mom and Dad say it’s okay to rent out the entire place, we can decorate it with balloons. I know your favorite cake is
cheesecake, but it may be better to get an ice-cream cake for a change this time.
W: Those are all great ideas. Maybe I can even get a snow machine.
M: You can call the party “Patty’s Wonderland”. Maybe Mom will let us rent some winter animals, like deer and penguins.

course, designed by the university accommodation provider Unite Students, will teach students

由文章第一段中“The lifestyles we see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality, disability and mental health issues. (我们在社交媒体上看到的那些网红宣传的生活方式很 enticing,但在这光鲜亮丽的外表之下,存在着收入不稳定、薪酬不平等、身体伤残以及心理健康等问题。)”可知,网光鲜亮丽的外表说明网红宣传的生活方式很诱人,enticing 的意思是“诱人的,吸引人的” 。可以用 Attractive“ 吸引人的”来替换。故选 C。
29 .细节理解题。由文章第三段中“The risks of self-employment are increased in the influencer industry by an absence of industry standards and little pay transparency. Influencers are often
forced to assess their own value and determine fees for their work. As a result, content creators
often undervalue their own creative labour, and many end up working for free.

users. Platforms share little detail about their algorithms, yet they finally determine who and what gains visibility and influence on social media. The threat of invisibility is a constant source of
insecurity for influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content.
The lifestyles we see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality,
disability and mental health issues. 和最后一段“Although becoming an influencer may look appealing to more and more
people, the industry’s dark underside needs to be made visible and improved through enhanced
employment regulation and industry-led cultural change. 故选 A。

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has become a crucial tool in
ecological research over recent years. By analyzing water, soil, or other environmental materials
for DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thousands of different species have been in an area
without having to observe the actual species passing through. 故选 A 项。
根据第三段中“These concerns include the lack of agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches (侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of genetic
information being used for commercial purposes.(这些担忧包括没有得到个人对其DNA 收集的同意,隐私可能遭到侵犯,以及遗传信息被用于商业目的的风险)”和第四段中“However, this also means that if human information is not screened out, anyone could access this information,
raises issues around permission. Do we need to ask permission to collect these samples Should
we bring in some controls to remove human genetic data
根据最后一段中 Duffy 的话“We are raising these issues early so that
policymakers and society have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.
通读全文,结合第二段中“However, according to a paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, this technique could just as easily be applied to spot humans. (然而,根据发表在《自然·生态与进化》杂志上的一篇论文,这项技术同样可以很容易地应用于检测人
类)”和第三段中“These concerns include the lack of agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches (侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of genetic information being used for commercial purposes.(这些担忧包括没有得到个人对其 DNA 收集的同意,隐私可能遭到侵犯,以及遗传信息被用于商业目的的风险)”可知,文章主要介绍了 eDNA 在检测人类方面的应用及其引发的隐私和道德问题,故 B 项“eDNA: Human Detection Meets Privacy
Challenges(eDNA:人类检测遭遇隐私挑战)”最能概括文章内容,适合做文章标题。故选 B项。

At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready. Taking a deep breath, I once again neatly arranged all the well-prepared items: red paper and scissors. Soon, students and teachers gathered, curiosity in their eyes. I welcomed them with a smile and demonstrated: fold,
cut, unfold — and a butterfly spread its wings. A wave of surprise rippled through the crowd. Encouraged, I invited a boy to try; his star turned out uneven, yet drew laughter and applause. More joined eagerly, and I moved among them, guiding their hands, praising their efforts and celebrating each creation. When a teacher proudly held up her paper flower, the cheers grew louder. Red pieces fell to the floor, and my confidence, once hidden, shone through every new pattern.
From that day on, my world here started to change. In the hallway, students waved
butterflies from my stand and greeted me with bright “Ni hao!” My heart lifted as I waved back. In literature class, I gave voice to my ideas with newfound confidence. My English was not
flawless, yet my voice was steady, and instead of silence I saw nods and smiles. After class, a girl asked softly, “Can you show us more about your culture ” Her words lingered in my heart,
echoing like a gentle reminder. In that echo, I realized I had not only broken free from cultural
shock but also found my place in a shared story — one written by many voices, yet open enough to hold my own.
