Maggie, a girl of thirteen years old, lived on the west coast of the United States. She had never experienced an earthquake before; she only prepared for it. As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was common at her school. Her
family had made plans as well in case of a natural disaster.
One day, Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. However, it was not the same as usual. She was home alone. Her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway and her dad was to arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a two-week business trip.
After finishing her homework, Maggie felt a little hungry, so she went to the
kitchen to find something to eat. Just then she felt a shake, then the violent shaking. Maggie quickly ran under the large table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were deafening, and Maggie hugged herself in fear.
After what seemed like a very long time, the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. And there was the smell of natural gas in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve (阀门) was and how to turn it off. Dad had ever shown her before.
Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home
was then almost unrecognizable. Walls had fallen down and many things in the room were in a mess. As Maggie approached the open basement door, she could see the
steps. Carefully she made her way down into the dark basement.
While placing her feet firmly on the floor, Maggie felt a sudden pain as a large piece of wood hit her head and shoulder. She fell unconsciously onto a pile of boxes.
An hour later, she woke up and found her parents beside her. She smiled weakly at the sight of her parents, her heart filled with a sense of peace after the terrible experience.

On a quiet street in Bangkok, a shop owner watches water rise through her floor for the third time this year. She simply moves her goods to the second floor and waits. Four blocks away, a newly built park is doing something strange — it’s designed to
flood.
This is not failure. This is adaptation.
For more than a century, cities treated water as the enemy to be defeated.
Engineers built higher walls, stronger pumps (泵) and deeper channels. The enemy
metaphor ran deep: We “fight” floods, “battle” rising seas and storm surges. And for a while, it worked, or seemed to.
Then came the storms that broke the walls. Hurricane Sandy flooded 51 square kilometers of New York City in 2012. In 2021, floods in Germany killed more than 180 people despite advanced warning systems. The concrete defenses, perfected over generations, were failing in plain sight.
What these events exposed was not a problem in engineering, but a problem in thinking. You cannot defeat water; you can only delay it. And delay is not a strategy. Not with a bang, but with a rethink. In Copenhagen, after a 2011 flood caused
nearly a billion dollars in damage, city planners didn’t just rebuild — they redesigned. A new park called Tasinge Plads now serves as a public square when dry and a
retention pond (蓄水池) when rains come. Children play on equipment that doubles as water storage. The enemy has become a neighbor.
The most telling change may be happening in the Netherlands, a country that
literally built itself on the idea of defeating water. However, the Room for the River program, begun in 2007, has done something unconventional: it moved dikes (堤坝) back, lowered floodplains, and gave rivers room to breathe. When water rises now, it flows where it’s meant to go.
Back in Bangkok, the shop owner knows something that city engineers are only beginning to learn. Water doesn’t need to be fought. It needs to be expected.
The old question was: How high can we build the wall
The new question is: What can we build that water can live with
8 .How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph
A .By describing a scene. B .By presenting a comparison.
C .By citing a shop owner. D .By explaining a phenomenon.
9 .What does the author try to illustrate in paragraph 4
A .The inconvenience of concrete defenses.
B .The severity of natural disasters worldwide.
C .The shortage of advanced warning systems.
D .The ineffectiveness of old flood control ways.
10 .What is Netherlands’ water management like according to the text
A .Cautious and flexible. B .Economical and reliable.
C .Innovative and reasonable. D .Efficient and systematic.
11 .What do the two questions at the end of the text mainly show
A .The necessity of construction. B .The importance of engineering.
C .The transformation in concepts. D .The trouble in solving problems.

Animal therapy (治疗), also known as pet therapy, uses pets and other animals to help
people recover from illnesses and deal with physical, mental (心理的) and emotional challenges. It is effective for various health problems, and there are many animals to choose from, including dogs, horses, and even birds.
According to Verywell Health, therapy animals are specifically trained to give comfort and care. How they are used depends on the people who use them. For example, children with physical disabilities (残疾) often take part in horseback riding therapy: as they learn to guide and ride the
horses, they build physical strength, improve balance, and get a sense of achievement. Therapy
animals are often confused with service and emotional support animals. Emotional support
animals, which live with and comfort only their owners, are not required to have professional
training. While service animals are specifically trained to perform tasks for people with
disabilities. They may help a blind person adapt to their surroundings or warn someone of danger.
Therapy animals can greatly help people relax. During animal therapy sessions, they often act as great icebreakers between patients and therapists. This makes it easier for people to express their feelings and share their experiences-similar to talk therapy, but with the support of an animal. The special connection formed between humans and animals provides patients with the comfort
and encouragement they need during the treatment.
The benefits of animal therapy can be different depending on a patient’s condition and
treatment goals, but some benefits are quite universal. The American Psychiatric Association
(APA) notes that animals like dogs can help patients build better relationships with their
therapists, help the patients connect more easily with others, build their self-confidence and offer valuable companionship.
While animal therapy is highly beneficial, it’s important to remember that it should not take place of other necessary treatments. And people who are afraid of animals or who don’t like them may not be a good fit for animal therapy. The experience could cause additional stress that may be greater than the possible benefits. Patients should check with their healthcare team before trying
animal therapy.
12 .What is the main purpose of animal therapy
A .To research how animals are treated. B .To supply owners with daily company.
C .To help physical and mental recovery. D .To encourage kids to be physically strong.
13 .How are emotional support animals different from therapy animals
A .They support their own owners. B .They need more time for training.
C .They live separately from owners. D .They specially serve the disabled.
14 .Why are therapy animals regarded as “icebreakers”
A .They prevent patients from talking. B .They make patients feel less cold.
C .They lead patients to exercise actively. D .They help patients open up easily.
15 .What can be inferred about animal therapy from the last paragraph
A .It is suitable for most people. B .It needs to be used carefully.
(

)C .It works best for reducing pressure. D .It makes other treatments unnecessar

When working in the garden, a gardener has to deal with dirt, sticks, and rocks. This could cause injuries like cuts. Gardening gloves are used to protect your hands from such gardening dangers. And they can keep your hands clean. 16
Commonly, gardening gloves are made of cotton. Cotton is light and cheap to make and protects the hands from dirt. However, cotton gloves do not provide much protection from sharp objects. They wear out easily. 17 And that moisture (潮气) can make the gardener’s hands cold on a cold day.
To deal with the shortcomings of cotton gloves, gardeners can turn to other
kinds of gardening gloves. Gloves made of both cotton and leather can be a good
choice. 18 As a result, they don’t have to be replaced often. Their weakness is that they still get wet and do not provide much protection from sharp objects.
Gloves completely made of leather wear much better. They are usually used for heavy garden and yard work. 19 If gardeners want to keep moisture away
from their hands, they can turn to the gloves specially designed for such a purpose.
20 The gloves of the right size will protect the gardener’s hands from many different kinds of dangers and allow them to catch things. Wearing gloves that
are too big may prevent the gardener from holding on to tools. Gloves that are too small can cause skin injuries.
A .It is advised that you clean your gloves less often.
B .They wear better than cotton gardening gloves.
C .But they tend to be uncomfortable in hot conditions.
D .In addition, they get heavy when they are wet.
E .Some gloves are designed for light garden work.

Mini-series (微短剧) 36 (become) popular on short video platforms
recently. These mini-series, often 37 (adapt) from novels, feature episodes lasting one to three minutes, with around 80 to 100 episodes in total. Typically, the first 20 episodes (一集) are free, but viewers must pay to access

I had always thought of my neighborhood as a peaceful and friendly place. However, all that changed when Mr. Thompson moved in next door. He was a
middle-aged man who seemed to have a rather strange lifestyle.
At first, I didn’t pay much attention to him. But one day, I noticed that his car
was always parked in a way that blocked part of my driveway. It was really
inconvenient, especially when I was in a hurry to go to work or pick up my kids from school. I politely asked him to be more careful with his parking, but he just gave me a cold look and said he would do so as he was pleased. This made me get cross with
him.
As time went by, more problems arose. Mr. Thompson had a big dog that
barked loudly day and night. I could barely have a sound sleep, and my kids were also disturbed by the noise. I tried to talk to him about the dog, but he refused to listen. He even accused me of being too sensitive.
One evening, I came home from a long-day work, extremely worn out. Just as I was about to park my car, I found that Mr. Thompson’s car was once again blocking
my driveway. I was so frustrated that I knocked on his door forcefully. After seemed a long time, the door opened. There stood Mr. Thompson with an indifferent look on
his face. Words were exchanged, and both of us were angry. We had a heated
argument. He even slammed the door shut right in front of me. After that, we didn’t talk to each other for weeks. My once proud and friendly neighborhood ties are gone.
One day, as I was mowing the lawn(修剪草坪)in my garden, I saw Mr. Thompson struggling to carry a heavy box along his driveway.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
