Leaves will soon make their gradual change to vivid colors of yellow, orange and red as we head through the fall months, but when you can usually expect peak color to arrive depends on where you live. When Will Fall Leaves Peak For You
— Late September or Early October: The Rockies, the northern parts of Minnesota through Michigan and a stretch from upstate New York to northern New England see peak color first.
— Mid to Late October: Potential for peak fall color advances through the Midwest into the Appalachians and much of the Northeast in mid to late October. Most other areas in the western
region, including valleys, see fall’s brightest color by this time of year as well.
— November: Much of the mid-Atlantic coast and the South are the last holdouts to see peak color in November. Why Do Leaves Change Color
A shorter amount of daylight is the primary factor for the color of the leaves to begin to change. As nights grow longer and cooler, production of the green pigment (色素) slows and eventually stops. This allows the yellow and orange pigments to shine through, revealing the many beautiful colors offall. What Makes A Good Colorful Season
Location matters: Higher altitudes and northern latitudes cool first, causing earlier color changes. Weather’s role: The perfect recipe includes warm, sunny days paired with cool nighttime temperatures.
Soil moisture (湿度): Sufficient soil moisture through spring and summer can help increase the chances ofthe colorful leaves. Wind warning: If a strong windstorm affects an area that’s near peak color, then it can tear off leaves from trees to some extent, reducing the display of peak color.
So grab your camera, plan your trip, and get ready for nature’s colorful delight!
1 .When can you enjoy peak fall color in valleys ofthe western region
A .Late September. B .Early October. C .Late October. D .Mid November.
2 .What mainly causes the change of leaf colors
A .Rainy nights in autumn. B .Reduced daylight hours.
C .Uncovered pigments. D .Rising temperature.
3 .What may ruin the full display of peak color
A .The wet soil. B .The tree species.
C .The hot summer. D .The severe storm.

37-year-old Swedish actor Timothy Pilotti uses physical comedy to bring cultural
exchanges to the stage. Peking Opera has been a game changer for him, which led him to China and shaped enthusiasm for cultural exchanges.
Pilotti had a childhood love for a Chinese film. “His films blended a lot of acrobatics (杂
技) and comedy into the fight scenes,” Pilotti says. Unlike kung fu, primarily a martial art, Peking Opera caught his opinion as a theatrical form designed for the stage with unique way of moving
and fighting.
Pilotti decided to become an actor at an early age, studying at acting schools and majoring in physical theater at a Finnish university. During the third year in university, he got the first
opportunity to study Peking Opera in China. “Some of my classmates went to India, for example, but my dream was to go to China — it was a no-brainer,” he says. In 2009, he and two other
students arrived at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing to study Peking Opera for six months.
Although he had no Chinese language skills or background in Peking Opera, teachers from
the academy helped him grasp the essence of the performing art form through rigorous teaching and setting high standards.
Traditional Chinese stories enlighten Pilotti. He has created two theatre pieces in recent
years, including a story about the Monkey King, the omnipotent (全能的) character from the
novel Journey to the West. In the Monkey King, Pilotti embodies the character’s tangibly
characteristics through Peking Opera movements, inspiring his young audience members to be
themselves. “The Monkey King is a famous character with many adaptations, so the kids already know a bit about him. But, when they can see the character closely in the show, it can be a
surprise.”
“My dream now is to do more cultural exchanges and maybe create a show where Chinese Peking Opera and Swedish actors perform together.” Pilotti says.
4 .What can we know about Peking Opera and Pilotti from the text
A .Peking Opera is a martial art in Pilotti’s eyes.
B .Peking Opera completely changed Pilotti’s life.
C .Pilotti didn’t like Peking Opera at all as a child.
D .Pilotti grew up with a Peking Opera background.
5 .What did Pilotti mean by saying “it was a no-brainer” in paragraph 3
A .It was a tough decision because he lacked Chinese skills.
B .It was an obvious choice as he dreamed of going to China.
C .He made the decision without any prior knowledge of China.
D .It required extensive brainpower to understand Peking Opera.
6 .What kind of person is Pilotti
A .Original and dedicated B .Adaptable and rigorous
C .Passionate and considerate D .Committed and conventional
7 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .The Monkey King: A Huge Success B .A Swede Acts on Passion for Peking Opera
C .A Swede’s Journey into Chinese Martial Arts D .Pilotti’s Childhood Dream: From Finland to China

The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content. But do these efforts resolve mental health issues, or are they simply applying a band-aid to a
wound
It’s a small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist who works with youth who experience anxiety disorders.“Even if you remove the likes, there continue to be opportunities for comparisons and feedback. People still can compare themselves to others, and people still can post comments.”
Social platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and
even physical ailments(小病).This puts a large amount of the population at an increased risk of
feeling anxious, depressed, or ill over their social media use. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick
“When the outcome is unpredictable , the behavior is more likely to repeat. Think of a slot machine(老虎机): if game players knew they were never going to get money by playing the game, then they never would play,” says Sperling. “The idea of a potential future reward keeps the
machines in use. The same goes for social media sites. One does not know how many likes a
picture will get, who will like the picture, and when the picture will receive likes. The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites.”
FOMO-fear of missing out - also impacts the youth greatly. Teenagers hope to keep track of friends’ activities. If everyone else is using social media sites, and if you don’t join in, there’s
concern that you’ll miss chats, jokes, connections, or invitations. Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression. When people look online and see they’re excluded from an activity, it can affect thoughts and feelings, and can affect them physically.
In addition to limiting likes, as Instagram has done, Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing. They might function more as messaging services by
highlighting one-on-one communications. Regardless of how likely social media giants are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
8 .What does Sperling think of Instagram’s measure
A .It’s strict. B .It’s limited. C .It’s objective. D .It’s conservative.
9 .What is probably the major reason for social media addiction
A .Need for self-expression.
B .Desire for constant recognition.
C .Expectation of possible surprises.
D .lack of interest in real-life activities.
10 .What does Sperling alvise social platforms to do in the last paragraph
A .Restrict their service scales.
B .Decrease one-on-one interactions
C .Limit the time users spend on them.
D .Shift the focus from sharing to messaging.
11 .What might the author continue talking about
A .Redesign of social media platforms. B .Changes made by social media giants.
C .Strategies for individuals’ self-control. D .Impact of social media on mental health.
D
Science fiction stories have imagined future people living in underground cities on Mars, in asteroids, and in space stations far from the sun. But if humans are ever to survive in any of those tough environments, they will need ways to grow food using limited resources-and photosynthesis (光合作用), the wildly successful yet energy-inefficient process by which plants turn sunlight into sugar, might not cut it.
Now, some scientists are wondering whether it’s possible to produce food more efficiently by skipping photosynthesis altogether, and growing plants in the dark.
The idea sounds as science fictional as cities on Mars. But a team of researchers has taken a first step toward realizing it with a study published in Nature Food in June. The research shows it is possible to grow algae (藻类), edible yeast (食用酵母), and mushroom-producing fungi (真菌) in the dark by supplying them with a carbon-based chemical that didn’t originate from plants, but instead was manufactured using solar electricity. That is, this method replaced biological
photosynthesis with a partly artificial process for turning sunlight into food. Their process is a version of artificial photosynthesis, a term that has been around for years and includes various approaches to transforming sunlight, water, and CO2 into liquid fuels and other chemicals.
The researchers say their work represents the first time an artificial photosynthesis system
has been paired with an attempt to grow common food-producing organisms. The scientists are hopeful that this method could unlock new ways to produce food using less physical space and energy than traditional agriculture — including, perhaps, crops that can grow in the dark.
While other experts are skeptical that it will ever be possible to redesign plant biology so thoroughly, they are excited by the technology the researchers have invented and the team’s
out-of-the-box idea about how to make food production more efficient.
Lynn Rothschild, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, says it’s worth keeping an open mind about how any efforts to redesign a fundamental biological process like photosynthesis could be applied, in space or on Earth: “The payoff may be something we
haven’t imagined yet.”
12 .How could scientists grow algae in the dark according to the text
A.By giving them a chemical from plants. B.By giving them a chemical produced by solar electricity.
C .By giving them physical space and energy. D .By giving them crops that grow in the dark.
13 .Which of the following best describes artificial photosynthesis”
A .It uses sunlight, water, and CO2 inefficiently. B .It has been very successful.
C .It helps to find new ways of producing food. D .The term has just been created.
14 .What does the underlined word “out-of-the-box” mean in paragraph 5
A .Taken out from the box. B .Usable immediately.
C .Mysterious. D .Very creative.
15 .Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A .How to grow fungi in the dark B .What is artificial photosynthesis
C .Can food crops grow in the dark D .How to turn sunlight into food

47 .Last month, my best friend Lily and I made an appointment to volunteer at the local
animal shelter every weekend. We both adored animals and had dreamed of opening our own
rescue center someday. Our routine was simple: I’d clean kennels (狗舍) while Lily socialized the cats. But as midterm exams approached, my anxiety snowballed began skipping shifts, inventing excuses like “family emergencies” or “study sessions”. Lily never questioned me, but her
disappointed sighs cut deeper than any accusation.
One rainy Saturday, the shelter’s director called me directly. Lily’s down with a cold, she said, “and we’ve got some abandoned dogs arriving in an hour. Can you come ” My hands got sweaty, I’d lied about studying that very morning, claiming I needed to go over chemistry. Now, faced with a choice between my lie and the dogs, I froze. “I...I have a fever,” I tripped over my words. “I can’t make it.” The director’s silence felt like a hit.
That night, guilt bothered me as I went through Lily’s Instagram ( 照片墙). There she was wrapped in a blanket, surrounded by eight tiny golden retrievers (寻回犬). The illustration read:
Even when I’m sick, these angels keep me going. Below it were comments praising her devotion. My chest tightened. Scrolling further, I saw Lily’s post from last night: “Stuffy nose, but Mom’s chicken soup saved the day!”
The next day, I dragged myself to the shelter. Through the window, I saw Lily kneeling in front of a kennel, cleaning patiently. Her coughs rang out through the courtyard. I pushed open the door, my throat tightening, “Lily...” She tuned, her face pale but eyes bright. You said you were
sick, she whispered. But here you are, perfectly fine. I opened my mouth to explain, but the words died as a tremble attacked her body.

本文是一篇说明文。文章主要围绕“打扰”这一话题展开论述。由于在工作中被打扰是一件令人感觉很糟糕的事,因此作者提出了几点建议,防止此类事件的发生。
16 .根据上文 Interruptions (打扰) are one of the worst things to deal with while you’re trying to get work done.(当你试图完成工作时,打断是最糟糕的事情之一)及下文 there are several ways to handle things.(有几种处理事情的方法)可知,此句与前半句构成一个完整的句子。B. When you want to avoid interruptions at work(当你想要避免工作被打扰的时候)符合语境。故选 B。
17 .根据下文 Tell the person you’re sorry and explain that you have a million things to do and
then ask if the two of you can talk at a different time.(告诉对方你很抱歉,并解释你有很多事情要做,然后问他们是否可以在不同的时间交谈)可知,这一段主要是讲述学会在自己很忙的时候去拒绝别人。A. If you’re busy, don’t feel bad about saying no(如果你很忙,不要因为说“不”而感到不好意思)符合语境。故选 A。
18.根据上文When people try to interrupt you, have set hours planned and let them know to come back during that time or that you’ll find them then.(当人们试图打扰你的时候,给他们设定好时间计划,让他们知道在这段时间内回来或者你会找到他们)及下文 It can help to eliminate (消除) future interruptions.(这样做可以帮助你消除未来被打断的可能)可知,此处衔接上下文,
E. It’s important that you let them know when you’ll be available(让他们知道你什么时候有空是很重要的)符合语境。故选 E。
19.根据上文 When you need to talk to someone, don’t do it in your own office.(当你需要和别人交谈时,不要在你自己的办公室里)及下文 it’s much easier to excuse yourself to get back to
your work than if you try to get someone out of your space even after explaining how busy you
are.(找借口回去工作要比在解释完自己有多忙后还试图让别人离开你的空间要容易得多)可知, it 指代前文 don’t do it in your own office. D. If you’re in the other person’s office or in a public area(如果你在别人的办公室或公共场所)能够后半句构成一个完整的句子。故选 D。
20 .根据上文 If you have a door to your office, make good use of it.(如果你的办公室有一扇门,好好利用它)可知,此段主要是讲述关于如何利用自己办公室的门来防止被打扰。G. Leave it open when you’re available to talk and close it when you’re not(当你有空的时候让它开着,不方便的时候就把它关上)符合语境。故选 G。
本文中的第 2 小题属于七选五阅读中最常见的设空在段首的方法,通常是段落主题句。认真阅读后文内容,根据段落一致性原则,查找同义词或其他相关的词,推断出主题句。本题根据下文 Tell the person you’re sorry and explain that you have a million things to do and
then ask if the two of you can talk at a different time.(告诉对方你很抱歉,并解释你有很多事情要做,然后问他们是否可以在不同的时间交谈)可知,这一段主要是讲述学会在自己很忙的时候去拒绝别人。A. If you’re busy, don’t feel bad about saying no(如果你很忙,不要因为说“不”而感到不好意思)符合语境。故选 A。

Stand Up and Exercise, Everybody
Most of us keep sitting all through breaks, which makes our bodies stiff and minds tired. Here I strongly recommend stretching as an ideal sport for breaks.
It is easy to learn and needs no special equipment. We can do it right in our classrooms in a short time. Stretching helps relax tight muscles, improve blood circulation and reduce study
pressure. It can also refresh our mind and help us focus better in the next class. Let’s move our bodies and keep healthy every day.
47 . I realized it was time to admit my lie and make up for my mistakes. Tears welled up in my
eyes as I blurted out the truth: “I wasn’t sick. I lied because I was too anxious about midterms to volunteer.” I hung my head, waiting for her anger. But she just sighed softly and said, “I knew something was off, but I didn’t want to push you.” She pointed to the clean kennels and playful puppies, “We’re a team, remember We can help each other through tough times.” Her words
made my guilt heavier, but also filled me with warmth.
With trembling hands, I took out the homemade chicken soup I’d cooked early in the
morning. “I made this for you. It’s not as good as your mom’s, but I hope it helps,” I said shyly.
Lily’s eyes lit up. After she took a sip, she smiled and handed me a puppy. “Let’s clean the last
kennel together.” We worked side by side, chatting softly. From that day on, I never skipped a
shift. When midterms came, Lily even helped me review. True friendship, I learned, is about
honesty and standing by each other — even when things get tough.
