As the snow begins to melt away into a distant memory, be sure to head outdoors this
spring. Before the peak summer crowds roll in, you can explore unique scenic spots with out the overwhelming rush of tourists. Several destinations around the globe are especially notable for their breathtaking spring offerings.
Puebla
This city in central Mexico attracts visitors with its UNESCO-recognized historic
structures. Spring marks the final few months of Puebla's dry season and temperatures average around 21℃ —just right for wandering through the city's main square, or admiring baroque
architecture like Capilla del Rosario.
Machu Picchu
Spring is a time of transition (过渡) at Machu Picchu. Tourists looking for ideal weather can book a trip in May, the beginning of this Peruvian heritage site’s dry season. No matter when you visit, you' ll be glad you have come as you set eyes on the 600-year-old Inca Citadel, one of
the New Seven Wonders ofthe World.
Yellowstone National Park
As the snowfall starts to slow down, baby animals emerge in Yellowstone, making this
national park an excellent place to spot wildlife in spring. Tourists can hike on the lower elevation (高度) trails that open in April and May, while those who love mammals can keep their eyes
peeled forbears coming out of hibernation with their cubs.
Arches National Park
You’ll be comfortable while exploring the park’s 2,000 arches or biking along its scenic paved roads. If you’re willing to risk a cold front, you can avoid the crowds during a March trip. Gathering ingredients for my favorite sandwich takes time. Certainly more than 10 seconds
— the time my fridge allows me to quietly search inside. After those 10 seconds, a series of
ear-piercing beeps begin — an alarm to remind forgetful humans to close its doors. My suspicion is that the alarm, which cannot be neutralized, was designed to stop my late-night search in the
fridge — my wife has long warned me that midnight snacking is bad for my waistline.
The frightened fridge is just one example of the creations by engineer-designers who are
convinced that seniors like me can’t survive without beeping reminders. My car beeps constantly, particularly when I get out. There is simply no way to stop it. At first, I thought the car was just
too sad to see me go.
It is not just the fridge and the car. Once I started paying attention, I realized our
environment is filled with reminder noises. The stove (炉灶) sings too — leave a burner on and it performs its own little concert. As for my phone, even after turning off every notification I can
find, calendar reminders still get through.
So I went online looking for a solution — and found a video of an equally frustrated man
taking apart the beeper on the exact same fridge model. I can handle the fix. But now the question is: Do I really want to What ifI leave the fridge door partly open and ruin a costly roast What if I miss the notification that reminds me of an appointment I may forget The consequences of an
unbeeped life may be too serious to risk.
Finally, tool in hand, I stand before the fridge. If there were a silence option, I might leave it alone. But there isn’t — and I’ve had enough. I’ll remove the noise-maker and put a sticky note on the door instead, reminding me to close it. The reward of a successful late-night search for a
delicious sandwich is definitely worth it.
4 .What does the underlined word “neutralized” in paragraph 1 mean
A .Used. B .Heard. C .Disabled. D .Repaired.
5 .The stove and phone are mentioned to illustrate that .
A .elderly people have a failing memory
B .modern machines are poorly designed
C .technology changes seniors’ living habits
D .beeping alarms are unavoidable in daily life
6 .What can be inferred about the author from paragraph 4
A .He fails to find a way to stop the noise.
B .He considers the online video unhelpful.
C .He worries about life without reminders.
D .He is unable to fix the fridge by himself.
7 .What does the author finally decide to do about the fridge
A .Buy a much quieter fridge. B .Tolerate the disturbing noise.
C .Avoid late-night searches in it. D .Replace the alarm with a note.

Dr. Nancy Roman, born in 1925, who was celebrated as a pioneer for female scientists and had advanced the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, died on Dec 25, 2018.
When Nancy Roman asked for permission to take a second algebra (代数) course in high school, a teacher demanded to know “what lady would take mathematics instead of Latin”. In
college, a professor admitted that he often tried to prevent women from majoring in physics but Nancy stuck to it. And after receiving Doctor’s degree in astronomy, she found a professional
home at NASA (美国宇航局). In 1959, Dr. Roman became the first chief of astronomy at NASA headquarters, a role that made her one of the agency’s first female leaders.
Dr. Roman spent much of her career helping develop, fund and promote technology that
would help scientists see more clearly beyond Earths atmosphere. But her most well-known work was perhaps leading to design the Hubble Space Telescope the first major telescope to be sent into space for the purpose of gathering photographs and data from the universe. She was, therefore,
named as “the mother of Hubble” .
“She made it possible to get the early telescope up into space to learn what needed to be learned,” said science historian Bob Zimmerman, and her hard-nosed nature helped get the
telescope built.
The telescope did not launch until 1990, a little more than a decade after Dr. Roman retired, but when it did, its photographs of the universe thrilled the world. “I am glad,” she once told
Science, “I ignored the people who told me that I could not be an astronomer.”
8 .What can we conclude from the teacher’s reaction to Nancy Roman’s application for taking a second algebra course
A .The teacher doubted it. B .The teacher didn’t care about it.
C .The teacher accepted it at once. D .The teacher was strongly against it.
9 .What was the most famous achievement of Nancy Roman’s work
A .She was one of the founders of NASA. B .She proved the black hole really existed.
C .She led to design the Hubble Space Telescope. D .She was the first female astronomer in the world.
10 .When did Dr. Nancy Roman probably retire
A .In 1969. B .In 1979. C .In 1990. D .In 2000.
11 .What can we learn from Dr. Nancy Roman’s words in the last paragraph
A .She was very proud of what she had done for the country.
B .She thought highly of the people who hadn’t believed her.
C .She had hard-nosed nature and never cared about other people’s opinions.
D .She was delighted to be an astronomer despite discrimination against her.

Human harvesting of krill (磷虾) in the Southern Ocean could threaten the recovery of
whale species that were nearly wiped out by industrial whaling in the 20th century, according to a study in Nature Communications.
Krill are the essential food source for baleen whales such as blue whales and humpbacks. Booming demand for krill, however, could leave whales without enough food to sustain despite
their decreasing numbers. “Our calculations suggest an alarming possibility that we might harvest krill to the point where we do real damage to recovering whale populations,” said lead study
author Matthew Savoca from the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.
In the nearly 40 years since a global whaling ban went into effect in 1986, some Southern Ocean species, particularly humpbacks, have made an impressive comeback. Yet, this recovery has taken place against increasing competition with humans for the whales’ critical food source. Over the past 30 years, the krill catch has doubled to around 400,000 tons annually and is set to expand further.
Savoca and his colleagues calculated how much krill was left in the Southern Ocean for
baleen whales, seabirds, and other predators to eat after industrial krill harvesting at current rates, and compared it with the estimated amount of krill available before industrial whaling began.
“The basic math makes it clear that the current krill biomass (生物量) cannot support both an
expanding krill fishery and the recovery of whale populations to pre-whaling size.” said Savoca.
The study offers suggestions for how the CCAMLR, an international organization that
manages Southern Ocean fisheries, can help prevent disaster. Regulation of the areas and times of year when commercial krill boats can operate to minimize competition with whales is a starting
point. As for the krill themselves, improved monitoring to bring in more data on krill eggs and larvae (幼虫) hotspots could identify zones to ban or limit fishing.
The researchers hope their study will inspire more serious accounting and deeper
investigations into whales and the krill themselves, ultimately forming a path ahead that preserves the delicate ecological balance in the Southern Ocean.
12 .What does the study in Nature Communications mainly suggest
A .Baleen whales have made an impressive comeback.
B .Krill play a big role in the Southern Ocean ecosystem.
C .It’s wise to expand krill harvesting to support economic growth.
D .Current krill harvesting practices may destroy whale recovery efforts.
13 .What do we know about the current krill biomass
A .It is likely to bounce back. B .It doesn’t hold much research value.
C.It has increased greatly in the past 30 years. D.It is insufficient to support the local ecosystem. 14 .What is mainly discussed in the fifth paragraph
A .The ways to boost krill-related economic growth.
B .The practical measures taken by the CCAMLR.
C .The proposals put forward by the researchers.
D .The conflicts between whales and humans.
15 .What would be a suitable title for the text
A .Great Economic Benefits from Krill Harvesting
B .Krill Harvesting: A Threat to Whale Recovery
C .The Connection Between Whales and Krill
D .Restoration Efforts for Baleen Whales

Imagine this: A big earthquake is about to hit. The ground is still and the sky is clear.
Humans go about their day, unaware of what’s coming. But the animals They know. Dogs start barking uncontrollably and birds fly away in a confused mess. Even fish act strangely, swimming
quickly in wild patterns. Hours later — disaster hits. 16
Months before a 7.3 magnitude (震级) earthquake hit Haicheng, China, in 1975, villagers reported snakes waking up and coming out in the dead of winter and dogs acting in an unusual way. 17 This decision saved thousands of lives.
Similarly, before the disastrous Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004, elephants were observed running inland and birds deserting their low-lying nesting areas. Many wild animals seemed to escape to safety.
18 The answer lies in their ability to pick up signals we don’t notice. Many
animals have heightened sensitivity to vibrations (震动) in the ground. Elephants, for example,
can sense earthquake waves through their feet. Changes in air pressure and electrostatic fields (静电场) provide other warning signals. Birds and insects are highly sensitive to air pressure, which often changes before hurricanes and tsunamis. 19 Dogs, known for their powerful noses, might pick up these slight chemical changes before humans.
Do humans still have this instinct (本能)
Before modern technology, humans depended on natural instincts to survive. Have you ever had a strong feeling that something bad was about to happen Have you ever changed plans at the last minute, only to realize you avoided an accident 20 But we ignore them and trust
our reasoning. Animals don’t second-guess themselves — they just react.
A .How do animals know
B .What signals do animals sense
C .Modern technology has made us forget these skills.
D .Some scientists believe we still have potential survival instincts.
E .Earthquakes sometimes send out gases from underground faults.
F .The government took the warnings seriously and told people to leave.
G .Real-world cases prove that animals can sense disasters before they hit.

The moment 13-year-old Fausto saw his favorite band on TV, his eyes grew large with excitement. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life— to play the guitar in his own band.
Fausto decided to earn money to buy a guitar. He turned off the television, hopped onto his sister’s bike and rode north to the nicer section of Fresno in search of work. He went from door to door, but after three hours he managed to get only one job— being asked to hurry down to the
store to buy a loaf of bread, for which he received a dirty quarter.
While he was sitting in a park eating an orange, a dog approached him. It was a fancy dog, with a shiny collar and a tag with his name, Roger, and address. This dog looked like he belonged to rich people. An idea flashed across Fausto’s mind. He decided to take Roger home and collect a reward, saying he had found him near the freeway which is 15 miles away. The lie formed easily, but a small, cold knot of unease tightened unexpectedly in his stomach as Fausto walked the dog
to its house.
He knocked. A woman in a silky bathrobe opened the door. “Ma’ am,” Fausto said,
gripping Roger by the collar. “I found your dog by the freeway. His tag says he lives here, doesn’t he ” “That’s right!” the woman replied in a surprised and joyful voice. She then invited Fausto to come into the house.
Fausto looked around, amazed by the shiny furniture. “You’re probably hungry after your
good deed,” the woman said, bringing Fausto a tall glass of milk and a warm apple pie. Fausto ate, aware of the woman’s caring eyes watching him. He felt embarrassed by lying to such a kind lady.
“That was good,” he said after he finished. “Thank you, Ma’ am! Now I have to go home.”
As Fausto walked to the door, the woman opened her purse and took out two bills. “For your honesty and help,” she said warmly, pressing two hundred dollars into his hand. “You’re a good boy.” Fausto couldn’t meet her gaze, his face burning with a sudden feeling of shame that went deeper than mere embarrassment.

pre-whaling size.” said Savoca.
The study offers suggestions for how the CCAMLR, an
international organization that manages Southern Ocean fisheries, can help prevent disaster.
Regulation of the areas and times of year when commercial krill boats can operate to minimize
competition with whales is a starting point. As for the krill themselves, improved monitoring to
bring in more data on krill eggs and larvae (幼虫) hotspots could identify zones to ban or limit
fishing.
通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Human harvesting of krill (磷虾) in the Southern
Ocean could threaten the recovery of whale species that were nearly wiped out by industrial
whaling in the 20th century, according to a study in Nature Communications. B“Krill Harvesting: A Threat to Whale Recovery (磷虾捕捞:威胁鲸鱼恢复)”适合作本文的标题。故选B。

villagers reported snakes waking up and coming out in the dead of winter and dogs acting in an
unusual way (早在 1975 年中国海城发生 7.3 级大地震的数月前,村民们就发现,隆冬时节本该冬眠的蛇纷纷苏醒出洞,狗狗也出现了反常的行为。)” 以及空后“This decision saved
thousands of lives.(这一决定挽救了数千人的生命。)” F 选项“The government took the warnings seriously and told people to
18.根据空后“The answer lies in their ability to pick up signals we don’t notice.(答案在于它们能够捕捉到人类察觉不到的信号。)” A 选项“How do animals know (动物是如何预知的?)”
19.根据后文“Dogs, known for their powerful noses, might pick up these slight chemical changes before humans.(嗅觉灵敏的狗能比人类提前察觉这些细微的化学变化。)” E 选项“Earthquakes sometimes send out gases from underground faults.(地震有时会从地下断层释放出气体。)”
20 .根据前文“Have you ever had a strong feeling that something bad was about to happen Have you ever changed plans at the last minute, only to realize you avoided an accident (你是否曾有不祥预感、临时改计划从而避开意外?)” 以及后文“But we ignore them and trust our
D 选项“Some scientists believe we still have potential
survival instincts.(一些科学家认为我们仍拥有潜在的生存本能。)”

46 .Dear Alice,
Guess what We surprised our English teacher last week!
During the class break, we decorated the classroom with small balloons and cards. When our
teacher walked in, we sang the birthday song together and handed her a carefully prepared gift. She was so moved that her eyes were filled with tears.
This small activity brought us closer to our teacher. It made me realize that warmth and respect can be expressed in simple ways. I truly believe such sweet moments are the best memories in
school life.
Yours,
Li Hua

With the money gripped tightly in his hand, Fausto headed to the music shop. The very guitar he had dreamed of was shining there. Hardly could he tear his gaze away from the instrument,
imagining his fingers dancing on its strings. Yet, a sense of guilt pierced his heart. “It is not the
right way to fulfill a dream”, a voice whispered inside him. The crisp bills in his hand, now felt
like a weight too heavy to bear. Lost in the painful conflict between temptation and conscience, he stood motionless, feeling ashamed.
Turning his back on the shining guitar, Fausto walked with determination towards the woman’s house. He knocked on the door firmly. When the woman appeared with a surprised look, Fausto
confessed everything. “Actually,” he said, his voice steady, “it was my honesty that was almost
lost, not just your dog.” Moved by his courage and integrity, the lady, whose eyes softened with an understanding smile, not only insisted he keep the reward but also offered him an old guitar from her attic. It was this act of honesty, not the money, that truly fulfilled his dream.
