When Josh Epstein decided to renovate (翻新) his storeroom, he found himself in sudden need of a wide range of construction tools, but being a new homeowner he knew renovation could be costly.
Epstein found his way to the Northeast Seattle Tool Library (NESTL). Using the
organization’s services, he was able to borrow tools that he needed at a low cost — saving him thousands of dollars that would be needed to purchase the tools just to complete a single
construction job.
Tool libraries are proof of the benefits of repair to society. No matter who you are or where you live, something in your life is certain to break down from time to time. And, like the vast
majority of people, you probably can’t pay to simply replace every item you rely on that stops working. Repair, facilitated by tool libraries, is one answer. There are about 60 tool sharing
organizations across the U.S. lending everything from hand tools to table saws.
After finishing his storeroom, Epstein became a Program Manager at NESTL, where he
helps organize more than 100 volunteers to maintain a community center that allows its members to tap into a collection of tools and other useful items. When I asked him if there was anything I
ought to know about tool libraries, he said: “Tool libraries need more community and government support so that they are as commonplace as book libraries.”
That’s a good comparison. There are over 16,000 public libraries in the United States. They are spaces that are open to everyone and free to access. Tool libraries have a similar mission. They offer a low- or no-cost option to access tools. It isn’t just for homeowners either: tool libraries can be used for landscaping, automotive repairs, and even electronics repairs.
Together with “book” libraries, tool libraries help form the “social infrastructure (基础设施)” of the communities they serve. We should jump to promote the tool library model.
24 .What led Epstein to NESTL
A .Limited storage space.
B .Pretty poor repair skills.
C .Strict renovation standards.
D .High tool purchase costs.
25 .What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning tool libraries
A .Their origin. B .Their value.
C .Their models. D .Their problems.
26 .Why does the author compare tool libraries with public libraries
A .To highlight both are funded entirely by the government.
B .To show public libraries also lend out tools to the public.
C .To suggest tool libraries be as widely accessible as public libraries.
D .To prove that tool libraries are more popular than traditional libraries.
27 .What does the author call for in the end
A .Building more tool libraries.
B .Improving social infrastructure.
C .Increasing volunteer participation.
D .Combining tool and book libraries.

Nowadays, so many of us either skip lunch or eat at our desks from containers of takeout food that would provide more calories than nutrients and give us a blood-sugar rise and then an energy crash that wears us out well before our day is done. It is well known that “you are what you eat,” so the question we need to ask ourselves is: can the types of food we eat affect our
moods
“Our gut (肠道) is our second brain,” says Sarah Grossman, who, along with co-author
Tamara Green, penned a new book, Good Food, Good Mood: 100 Nourishing Recipes to Support Mind & Body Wellness. The two started working on the book after becoming aware of food-mood correlations, and were especially interested in the benefits of eating “supportive foods” and the
effect they could have on our moods and mental health.
“Blood sugar levels are highly important to be aware of, something that we talk a lot about in the book,” Grossman says. “The stability of our moods is related to our balanced blood sugar levels, as high levels can skew the mood equation, causing feelings such as tiredness, anxiety or stress.”
The authors’ mission in writing the book was to provide readers with nutritious food
solutions that are accessible, affordable and delicious, as well as practical, adaptable tools for
living. “Our hope is that readers, by following the suggestions in this book, which include adding protein to every meal as well as a wide range of colorful vegetables and plants, can make a
difference in their lives both physically and mood-wise. The more color variety we include in our vegetables, the better our gut microbes (微生物) are supported and fed, which, in turn, supports our brain function and positively affects our mood,” Green says.
28 .What problem does the author describe about modern lunch habits in paragraph 1
A .People spend too much money on takeout food.
B .Takeout lunch causes a short energy boost followed by exhaustion.
C .Most people are too busy to eat lunch at all.
D .Takeout food contains too much protein and not enough vegetables.
29 .What can be inferred about “supportive foods” mentioned in paragraph 2
A .They are mainly high-calorie foods that provide quick energy.
B .They help maintain stable blood sugar and support mental health.
C .They are only effective when eaten with protein.
D .They replace the need for colorful vegetables.
30 .What does the word “skew” in paragraph 3 most likely mean
A .To explain clearly. B .To keep unchanged.
C .To throw out of balance. D .To improve gradually.
31 .Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A .Why Skipping Lunch Harms Your Blood Sugar
B .The Second Brain: How Gut Microbes Control Our Mood
C .You Are What You Eat: The Food-Mood Connection
D .Colorful Vegetables vs. Protein: What Matters More

In the wave of agricultural automation, fruit picking has long been a technical challenge.
Traditional human harvesting is inefficient and costly, while fully automated robots often struggle with inaccurate recognition and inflexible operation in complex environments.
A research team led by Associate Professor Wang Pei from China’s Southwest University has addressed this problem with an innovative study. They developed a human-robot cooperative harvesting robot that can precisely locate and pick fruit with a simple wave.
Researchers found that humans excel at identifying fruit locations and determining picking paths, while robotic arms outperform in repetitive motions and force control. Based on this
insight, they designed a motion-sensing interaction system: the operator uses a Leap Motion
sensor to detect hand movements in real time, directing the robotic arm to the target position, and then launches the automated picking process with a double-tap gesture (手势). This design
combines human “eyes” with machine “arms”, maintaining human flexibility while capitalizing on mechanical stability.
To make the robotic arm move accurately, the team solved several technical problems. For example, when the computer calculates how the arm should move, it often finds many different ways to reach the same fruit. This can make the arm shake or suddenly stop. To fix this,
researchers created a “four-step screening method”: checking if the arm might hit itself, making sure the movement is correct, checking if the action is natural, and making the movement path as smooth as possible. Tests showed that the improved arm moved in a shorter path and turned its
joints less, making the whole picking process much smoother.
This technology lowers the technical barrier through a “human-robot cooperation” model
— removing reliance on expensive vision systems and enabling farmers to operate it with minimal training. The modular (组合式的) design of the robotic arm allows for flexible replacement of
joint motors, further enhancing maintainability. Tests confirm the system excels in complex environments, adapting well to challenges like blocked vision by leaves and uneven lighting.
32 .Why does the author mention the limitations of fully automated robots in paragraph 1
A .To prove that traditional human harvesting is more efficient than robots.
B .To introduce the specific difficulties that the new study aims to solve.
C .To argue that agricultural automation is not worth the investment.
D .To show that fruit picking is easier than other farming tasks.
33 .What role does the Leap Motion sensor play in the harvesting process
A .It automatically identifies ripe fruits without human help.
B .It replaces the robotic arm’s joint motors for easier maintenance.
C .It captures the operator’s hand signals to guide the robot’s movement.
D .It calculates the shortest path for the robotic arm to avoid shaking.
34 .What advantage does the modular design of the robotic arm provide according to the last paragraph
A .It makes the robotic arm lighter and easier to carry.
B .It enables the robotic arm to work in complete darkness.
C .It removes the need for any training before operation.
D .It allows farmers to replace damaged parts more easily.
35 .What is the main idea of the passage
A .Fully automated robots are no longer useful in modern agriculture.
B .The four-step screening method is the most important breakthrough in agricultural automation.
C .Farmers prefer using hand gestures over traditional harvesting methods because it saves time.
D .A new human-robot cooperative system offers a practical solution to fruit picking challenges.

In today’s fast-paced work environment, maintaining high spirit and productivity among employees is crucial for the success of any organization. 36 However, one simple yet
effective solution often goes ignored: walking. Engaging in regular walking activities not only promotes physical health but also has a great impact on employee well-being, mood, and overall job performance.
Walking breaks throughout the workday can energize the body and mind. Moving the body leads to the release of“feel-good” chemicals called endorphins. 37 . So, by taking short
walks, workers can refresh their brains. As a result, they can fight off sleepiness and return to their work with better focus and energy.
38 Work stress can hurt both a person’s mood and their professional results.
Engaging in regular walks provides a change of scenery, which allows individuals to disconnect from work pressures for a moment. By reducing stress, employees can better manage their
workload, make sound decisions, and maintain a positive attitude toward their professional responsibilities.
Finally, walking encourages interaction and collaboration. 39 Unlike stressful
offices, walking side by side makes coworkers feel comfortable, allowing them to speak more
freely. It also breaks down the walls between bosses and the staff, leading to more open and
honest conversations. Besides, when team members take group walks or have walking meetings, they build stronger friendships and a sense of belonging. 40
A .It allows employees to learn from each other.
B .They can improve mood and boost overall energy levels.
C .Plus, walking improves mental well-being.
D .Various strategies have been employed to achieve this goal.
E .As a result, walking contributes to their success.
F .Besides, walking helps overcome mental disorders.
G .It creates a relaxed setting for communication.

Unlike Western classical music, which often emphasizes band magnificence, traditional Chinese music tends to focus on the unique tonal qualities of its instruments. This distinction, deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy, 56 (reflect) a cultural preference for emotional
expression. For thousands of years, music in China has served as 57 bridge between humanity and nature.

The End of an Excuse
For years, English had been Lin Tao’s most dreaded subject. The endless verb forms, the
confusing grammar rules — all of it seemed like a waste of time. When translation apps appeared, he felt relieved. “Why memorize English when my phone can translate in seconds ” he argued
whenever his parents pushed him to study. His grades dropped, but he didn’t care. “You’ll regret this,” his best friend, Nick, warned. Lin Tao just laughed.
The reckoning came on a hot July afternoon during a family trip to Shanghai. His father, a small factory owner, had arranged to meet a German client named Mr. Smith, who spoke no
Chinese but only simple English with a heavy accent. Lin Tao’s father told the businessman that his son would serve as translator. “You’ve studied English for ten years,” his father said
cheerfully. “This will be easy.”
Lin Tao’s heart sank.
The meeting took place in a modern office. Mr. Smith smiled warmly and said, “Nice to finally meet you.” Lin Tao understood that and translated it to his father. So far, so good.
Then the real conversation began. Mr. Smith started talking about delivery dates, quality
checks, and some rules about European markets. The words came fast. Lin Tao caught a few
phrases — “lead time,” “product safety,” “customs forms” — but they floated past him like leaves in the wind. He pulled out his phone and opened the translation app. But the man’s accent kept
confusing the voice recognition, producing nonsense like “green light” instead of“deadline.”
The air conditioner humming, drops of sweat rolled down Lin Tao’s forehead.

“I’m sorry,” Lin Tao finally admitted, lowering his head.

W: Good morning, everyone. I’m going to share with you the story of Martin, a great
filmmaker. Martin was born in Paris in 1861. He showed a particular interest in the arts in his
early teens. After studying at a famous art school in Paris, Martin continued his studies in London, where he developed an interest in theater magic. When he returned to Paris, he worked at his
father’s factory and took over as manager when his father retired. His position meant that he was able to save enough money to buy the famous theater when it was put up for sale in 1888. From
that point on, Martin worked full-time, performing shows at the theater. Martin made a wide range of films. He was most famous for his fantasy films, but he also made advertising films and serious plays. However, after some time, audiences stopped finding his work so interesting or unusual,
and in 1912 he gave up making films. In 1923, he ran out of money and his theater was knocked
down. Martin was almost totally forgotten, but in the late 1920s, his contribution to cinema was
recognized by the French and he was given a special award. Martin died in 1938 after making over 500 films. He paid for, produced and starred in nearly every one.

the book not because someone forced him, but because he wanted to learn. The excuse had ended.
