Hungarian Jewish activist Rezso Kasztner, a brilliant, self-confident lawyer and journalist was directly responsible for liberating 1, 684 Jews on a train to Switzerland.
Struggling to save the Hungarian Jews,by the war ended, he had preserved some 100,000
more lives by bargaining (讨价还价) with the Nazis, including Adolf Eichman and Kurt Becher among other officers. He did this by making use of the Nazi weaknesses of greed and need “blood for goods”. Kasztner offered money, jewelry and the promise of war materiel (物资) that he knew could never be delivered in exchange for Jewish lives. He and the other activists were able to save only a small number of their people, as nearly half a million Hungarians.
Jews were sent to Auschwitz to be killed in just few months. The selection of those who were saved, especially on the train, had bothered Kasztner ever since.
After the war, Kasztner and his family emigrated to Israel, where he expected to be
welcomed as a hero. Instead, they found tension between settlers and refugees (难民), and because Kasztner had to pretend to make friends with Nasis, he was attacked as a Nazi collaborator (勾结者). When he charged one of his accusers (a man who was jealous (嫉妒) of him back in Hungary) with libel (谤罪), the judge ruled against him because of the struggle for power between the
political parties in Israel.
The real Rezso Kasztner was an extraordinary man who played a high-risk game with the devil. And he won in the only game of saving human lives. He achieved more in his way than any other individual in Nazi-occupied Europe. In the end all he lost was his own life.
4 .What can we learn about Rezso Kasztner from the passage

Can a small group of drones (无人机) guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year That is the very likely future of applying today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that the millions of
kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure (基础设施) worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do
precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be
inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient (高效) across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews’ efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To
perform these tasks, drones for rail don’t need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones ofthe future. They will be moving on the track ahead of the
train, and programmed to run autonomously. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they
could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
8 .What makes the application of drones to rail lines possible
A.The use of drones in checking on power lines. B.Drones’ ability to work at high altitudes.
C.The reduction of cost in designing drones. D.Drones’ reliable performance in remote areas.
9 .What does “maintenance” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to
A .Personnel safety. B .Assistance from drones.
C .Inspection and repair. D .Construction of infrastructure.
10 .What function is expected of the rail drones
A .To provide early warning. B .To make trains run automatically.
C .To earn profits for the crews. D .To accelerate transportation.
11 .Which is the most suitable title for the text
A .What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B .How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C .What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face
D .How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways
A robot that can wash windows and do the shopping is something that the futuristic cartoon The Jetsons envisioned occurring in 2062, but it is happening now. Unlimited Robotics, an Israeli startup based in Tel Aviv has created a robot that can do the tasks that you don’t want to.
Gary, named after the initials ofthe company’s founder and CEO Guy Altagar’s children, is not like the robots that are already on the market. The robot has two functioning arms and it is no easy task to build a robot with two arms. In fact, Altagar said that the robot can activate its arms to do a number of tasks at the same time.
Gary is also autonomous, which means that it can do tasks that are programmed without a person turning on a switch like an iRobot. This means that unlike robots that are designed to do just one task like picking fruit or assembling cars, Gary can pick up new skills and perform new tasks just by writing some additional lines of code.
While Gary was designed to do tasks in homes and offices, the robot could easily do work in factories, stores, and hospitals. Gary can hold up to5 kilos (11 pounds) and has a top speed of 1.2 meters per second (3.1 mph) and can adapt to multiple settings - floor, carpets, grass, indoors and outdoors. Gary can adapt to different environments because of the three different infrared (红
外线的) and in-depth cameras that are built in.
There are currently nine robots that are being used in medical settings and in hotels where there are presently labor shortages. Gary can do nonmedical work by bringing patients water or
extra blankets. But this is just the beginning. The company already has plans to increase the
number of robots to 500 by the end of 2024. After that, who knows what other futuristic Jetsonian fantasy will become a reality next
12 .Why does the author mention The Jetsons in paragraph 1
A .To highly praise the current robots. B .To get readers interested in robots.
C .To lead in the topic of robot Gary. D .To introduce a futuristic cartoon film.
13 .What is the advantage of Gary over other robots
A .It is easily operated. B .It can be programmed itself.
C .It is remotely controlled. D .It can do multiple tasks automatically.
14 .What does paragraph 4 focus on regarding Gary
A .Its capabilities. B .Its design. C .Its appearance. D .Its limitations.
15 .What is the author’s attitude towards the future of robots
A .Doubtful. B .Pessimistic. C .Optimistic. D .Worried.

New neighbors were an exciting prospect in our quiet neighborhood. When a couple moved into the house kitty-corner to us, I looked forward to seeing what they would do with the property. The lot was bare and plain, an unsightly spot on the street. I couldn't wait for the new owners to
grow some nice green grass. A lawn (草坪) would be a welcome sight when I looked out of our front window at it from across the street.
I thought I had to have mishear d when my new neighbor, Miss LaTrecia. announced she wouldn't be putting one in. We were standing in front of her house, and I almost dropped to the
ground.
“No lawn ” I repeated.
“No lawn,” she confirmed. “At least, not in the front. We'll put grass in the back for our
dogs to run around on, but I have my own plans for the front. I'm going to scatter (撒) wildflower seeds. Just imagine the colors! Plus, my husband won't have to tend to the lawn all the time.”
She and her husband looked to be in their eighties, and I wanted to be respectful. I struggled to find a polite way to tell her that I completely disagreed. “This Texas soil... there's so much clay and not much drainage (排水),”I said. “Planting a bunch of wildflowers will be a lot more taxing than mowing a lawn.”
“Now, now,” Miss LaTrecia insisted, “I have a plan for this yard. We're going to have three rocked tiers ”
I listened, horrified. If Miss LaTrecia did manage to turn her dream into reality, I feared my front window view would be worse than it was now.
Over the next few weeks, Miss LaTrecia's yard transformed into something entirely
unexpected. True to her word, she built three rock-edged tiers, filling them with dark soil. Then came the wildflower seeds — dozens of packets scattered with hopeful abandon. I watched
skeptically from my window, convinced the Texas sun and clay-heavy earth would ruin her project.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, tiny green shoots soon pushed through the soil.

46 .Our Oceans, Our Responsibility
June 8th was officially named by the UN in 2009 as World Oceans Day. It was set up to raise awareness of protecting the oceans, which play a crucial part in the global ecosystem.
Without the oceans, no living things would survive, humans included.
As senior students, we can protect oceans in our own way. First, try every means to fight
against global warming, which has become a great threat to sea creatures. Second, when surfing or boating, never drop litter into the sea. In addition, take an active part in voluntary activities
launched by ocean conservation organizations.
Every little effort counts. As long as we try our best, we will make a difference to the marine environment.
47.
To my surprise, tiny green shoots soon pushed through the soil. As the days passed, the
shoots grew taller and stronger, and before long, a riot of colors burst forth. The wildflowers
bloomed in a spectacular display — daisies, sunflowers, and purple coneflowers swayed gently in the breeze, attracting butterflies and bees. The three rock-edged tiers provided a perfect backdrop, creating a beautiful, natural - looking garden. I found myself staring out of the window in wonder, realizing how wrong I’d been. The sight was far more beautiful than any ordinary lawn could ever be.
From then on, our relationship changed. I went across the street to apologize to Miss
LaTrecia for my initial skepticism. She welcomed me with a warm smile and invited me to help
her tend to the garden. We spent many afternoons together, watering the plants, pulling weeds,
and chatting. I learned so much from her about gardening and life in general. Her wildflower
garden became a neighborhood attraction, and I felt proud to have played a small part in it. It
taught me never to judge a book by its cover and that beauty can come in unexpected forms.
