Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of miles that make up the complete Appalachian Trail(阿巴拉契亚山道),which is simply called the AT.Harvey was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.
To build up their child’s physical health and develop his personal qualities,Josh and Mary Sutton have been hiking with Harvey since he was two years old. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes.
The AT is a 3,530-kilometer hiking trail that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains, from Georgia to Maine, passing through 14 states in all.The amount of up and down on the trail is about the same as climbing up and down Mount Qomolangma (the world’s tallest mountain) 16 times. So only one out of every 4 hikers completes all the sections of the trail. But that didn’t stop Harvey and his family.
It took Harvey and his family 209 days—about seven months—to complete the entire AT.Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tent and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to set up camp again.
During his days on the AT,Harvey liked to use his imagination, which helped him walk more quickly and have fun.Harvey and his family made friends with other hikers on the trail.Harvey didn’t seem to get tired and enjoyed the hard work of hiking.“My favorite part was the rock climbing,” he says,“because it was so fun and hard.”
Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together.“We’re closer than ever before because of the experience,” Harvey’s mom said.“If possible,I want to hike the AT again at some point in the future,” Harvey added.
24.For what purpose did the Suttons hike the AT
A.To make Harvey strong both in body and in mind.
B.To prepare Harvey to climb Mount Qomolangma.
C.To see the fantastic natural scenery together.
D.To celebrate Harvey’s 5th birthday in a special way.
25.What do the numbers in paragraph 3 illustrate
A.The main features of the AT.
B.The difficulty of hiking the AT.
C.The popularity of climbing the AT.
D.The significance of crossing the AT.
26.What is the typical character of Harvey
A.Brave,curious and talkative.
B.Honest,easy-going and creative.
C.Reliable,proud and humorous.
D.Adventurous,positive and strong-willed.
27.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us
A.Harvey is going to hike the AT again.
B.It’s important to meet challenges on one’s own.
C.The Suttons have benefited greatly from the hike.
D.Hiking is sure to make family relationship stronger.

Artificial intelligence(AI) models are everywhere. The vast majority of these models work using artificial neural networks,or ANNs,which are a popular form of machine learning.
Most ANNs can learn to perform one task just fine. But when it comes to learning a new task, they have a problem that human brains don’t.They either fail to learn the new task,or they learn the new thing but erase most of what they knew about their original task. But this problem doesn’t tend to affect the human brains.
“How do our new memories get into the pool of old memories without erasing them?” Pavel Sanda wondered.Sanda is a computer scientist who is also part of a research team that used a computer model to explore how sleep helps a brain learn. As our brains sort through new experiences during sleep,he knew, they replay those events many times,so he decided to experiment with this aspect of human sleep in an AI model.
First,he and his teammates trained this AI on a simple task.It controlled a blue dot wandering through a grid(网格) which was seeded with three types of paired green blocks. For the first task, the AI learned to seek out side-by-side pairs.Next, the team tried teaching it to find out pairs that sat diagonal(对角线) from each other. However, they didn’t try to teach it the new rules all at once.Instead, they let the AI system explore the grid for a brief time, then take a sleep-like break.
During the break, there was no grid and no shapes to encounter. So there was nothing to see and no actions to take.It randomly replayed the way it had travelled. Thanks to these sleep-like breaks, the network managed to learn both tasks well.
Sleep may not be the best way for all AI models to learn multiple tasks. However, this new research is a very important first step towards understanding the importance of sleep.
28.Which aspect do most ANNs need improving
A.They can’t learn multiple tasks.
B.They are easy to break down.
C.They don’t have the ability to learn.
D.They can’t perform single tasks well.
29.What did the AI do in the experiment
A.It picked out a blue dot on a grid.
B.It sought out pairs in different places.
C.It compared dots of different shapes.
D.It controlled three paired green blocks.
30.How did scientists feel about the experiment
A.Disappointed. B.Puzzled.
C.Satisfied. D.Shocked.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.Repetition Makes Better ANNs
B.New AIs Are Being Tested
C.“Sleep” Can Help AIs Perform Better
D.Human Brains Differ from ANNs in “Sleep”

A new study suggests some of America’s favorite Independence Day fireworks can give out lead and copper(铜),which are used to give fireworks their vivid colors, and also damage human cells and animal lungs.
Led by researchers at NYU,the study showed poisonous levels of lead in the fireworks.Experiments showed that lung exposure to particle emissions(颗粒排放物) from five types of fireworks significantly increased oxidation(氧化),a chemical process in the body that can damage or even kill cells.
The researchers say the new study is believed to be the first to examine the effects of firework exposure in human cells and living animals, and to test for particles of common firework metals thrown into the atmosphere.
“While many are careful to protect themselves from injury from explosions, our results suggest that inhaling firework smoke may cause longer-term physical damage,a risk that has been largely ignored,” says study senior author Terry Gordon,a professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine.
Gordon and his team also analyzed 14 air quality samples taken at dozens of sites across the US throughout each year. They found that levels of poisonous metals were higher in samples taken on Independence Day and New Year’s Eve celebrations than at any other time of the year.Along with lead, copper and other poisonous metals are commonly found in fireworks.“Our research shows that although we are only exposed to these poisonous substances for a short time each year, they are much more poisonous than the pollutants we breathe every day,” says Gordon.
Gordon cautions(警告) that the current investigation is the first step, only addressing the potential effects of one-time exposure to the firework metals. He says repeated exposure is likely a larger concern.Nevertheless,he is planning to share his findings with local health officials, firework producers, the Environmental Protection Agent, and other regulatory agents to alert them to the potential for harm.
32.Why do some fireworks harm our health
A.They are oxidized in the air.
B.They can give out harmful metals.
C.They are exposed to particle emissions.
D.They can melt chemical substances in the body.
33.What does the underlined word “inhaling” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Letting out. B.Working out.
C.Taking in. D.Blowing off.
34.What can we infer from Gordon’s research findings
A.Fireworks are the main cause of air pollution.
B.Air quality on New Year’s Eve is above normal.
C.People breathe in poisonous air for a short time daily.
D.Air pollution on Independence Day is worse than usual.
35.What does Gordon intend to do with firework-related persons
A.Remind them not to set off fireworks.
B.Caution them against producing metals.
C.Alert them to the harm of the experiment.
D.Warn them of the possible dangers of fireworks.

Within seconds, the rapids had lifted the little white car into the river. It happened so quickly that they were too shocked to scream. Finally, the car caught an object in the middle of the river.
Muddy flood water was pouring into the car and rising quickly.Jane knew they had to get out quickly before the water rose too high in the car.Forcing the door open,Charlie jumped into the flood from the back row.Meanwhile,Jane grabbed the front door handle and tried to open it but in vain.“Try it again!” her husband shouted anxiously.
Hearing that,Jane took hold of the handle, using all her strength, and was able to pull the door open. She came out of the vehicle and finally reached Charlie, coughing and shaking. They leaned tightly against the back of the car and screamed for help.
At the same time a truck driver called Joe was complaining about the bad weather in his truck parked in his yard near the river. He had planned a road trip.Suddenly, carrying over the roar of the water,he heard screams coming from the river and rushed out immediately, spotting a car in the river.“I’ve got to do something,”he told himself. But how did he approach the car in such a complete darkness?Without thinking twice,Joe returned to his truck and drove to the river bank. Then he turned on the headlights and got a long rope from his truck. After that,he fastened the one end of the rope to the truck tight.

M:Before you run this marathon today, let me share something with you. In September 2016,a running event that would go down in sporting history took place. It was the World Triathlon Series in Mexico and the Brownlee brothers were both competing in the final race. With about 700 meters left,Jonny, the younger of the two brothers, was leading by some distance. But as he neared the finish line,it was obvious something was wrong. He was moving from side to side and was about to fall over.Weakened from the hot weather, his body could not go on. The runner behind him went past him.And then, just when all hope was lost and he was falling to the ground,he was caught by the third-placed runner.
When Jonny looked up,he could see that the runner was his older brother Alistair, who had stopped to help. Together, the brothers ran the rest of the race arm in arm.The brothers crossed the line to the cheers of everyone in the crowd. Alistair pushed Jonny ahead so that his brother could take second place. It was one of the most remarkable and moving moments in the history of world sports.

At around 6 pm,Jane and her husband Charlie were driving on the road. They were incredibly excited because they would attend the dream wedding of her daughter Iris the next day.As they drove beyond a town near their destination, the sky grew darker and darker and suddenly the rain poured down. When they were approaching a bridge,a wave of fast-moving water washed over the top of it.

Joe finally reached the couple.“Catching the rope!” he yelled at the top of his lungs.Having received Joe’s message,Charlie and Jane twisted their figures and clutched the rope tightly.Together, three of them swam against the torrent along the rope and finally made it to the bank.Charlie held Joe’s hands tightly and uttered with a choking tone,“Thank...you,without...your help,Jane and I would have been...drowned to death.” Joe shrugged and said anyone at his place would have done the same thing.Indeed, what a narrow escape they had and what a noble heart Joe has!
