A small accident led to profound changes in the life of Yang Li,an artisan(手艺人),who is from the Miao ethnic group. In 2011,Yang,from Tongren City in Guizhou Province, created leaf-vein(叶脉) embroidery(刺绣) three months after a leaf cut her hand.
The work is a perfect combination of traditional embroidery patterns and the natural textures(纹理) of the leaves. It has a unique aesthetic appeal of traditional embroidery matched with the characteristics of contemporary craftsmanship.
As a native Miao woman with an inborn love of embroidery,Yang opened a folk culture products shop with her sister in 2011.“People are becoming less familiar with traditional handicrafts, and I want to contribute all I can to change this situation,” Yang says.At first, the small shop did not earn a significant income as there were many similar products on the market. She gradually realized that it was important to establish her own brand and launch products with distinct features.
That’s when she was inspired by the cut.In July 2011,Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny leaf when she was hiking in Fanjing Mountain.A bold idea came into her head: “There are leaf-vein bookmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf-vein embroidery yet?”
Obviously, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few possess. The biggest technical challenge Yang faced was improving the flexibility of the leaves and making them as soft as cloth. On Oct.16,a day she will never forget,Yang finally created a shiny, thin and unbreakable piece of leaf vein. Her idea of leaf-vein embroidery came to completion after hundreds of experiments.
Two years later,Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women and people with disabilities.“I will keep doing the leaf-vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful,” she says.
24.What do we know about Yang Li’s folk culture products shop
A.It was inspired by a cut by a leaf in her hand.
B.It was a failure before she began to sell similar products.
C.It was intended to preserve traditional Chinese handicrafts.
D.It perfectly combined traditional Chinese books and drawings.
25.What was Yang Li’s difficulty in making her leaf-vein embroidery
A.Finding cloth with vein-like texture.
B.Creating a new embroidery pattern.
C.Changing leaves into unbreakable cloth.
D.Softening up leaves for better flexibility.
26.Which of the following best describes Yang Li
A.Caring and innovative.
B.Ambitious and patient.
C.Persistent and demanding.
D.Humorous and optimistic.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.An admirable artisan.
B.An embroidery skill.
C.A promising career.

When you hear the word “uncertainty”,how do you feel Scared, anxious, excited or challenged With many global challenges still ongoing,we are likely to face even more of the unknown,so we had better get accustomed to managing it.
So how do we detect uncertainty and which part of the brain is responsible for it Researchers have found that noradrenaline(去甲肾上腺素) is the key chemical involved in our response to uncertainty.
To investigate the role noradrenaline plays when we are faced with uncertain events, scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducted an experiment with mice. The animals were trained to push a lever(杠杆) down when they heard a high frequency noise. If they did this, they were rewarded with a drink of water. They were also trained to learn that they’d receive an unpleasant puff of air if the lever was activated when a low frequency noise was played. But the researchers added in an element of uncertainty by including a sound where the frequency was unclear.
From this experiment, the researchers discovered that a small part in the brain called the locus coeruleus—an area that modulates noradrenaline—was essential in detecting uncertainty. When the high frequency was clear and the reward was expected for the mice, their noradrenaline release was small. But when the outcome wasn’t clear, and the reward was a surprise, the release was much larger. This was how the mice’s brains learned to deal with uncertainty.
A study with humans was also carried out. They discovered that the subjects’ neurons(神经元) in the prefrontal cortex(前额叶皮质) respond much more to loss than to gain.Namely, this area rules our avoidance behaviour when we are under stress. This helps us understand our unwillingness to expose ourselves to uncertainty.
Once we understand that our cognitive and emotional responses to uncertainty are a necessary part of the human experience, perhaps making big decisions can seem less stressful.
28.What is the uncertainty in the experiment with mice
A.The high frequency noise.
B.A drink of water as a reward.
C.The action to push a lever down.
D.The sound with unclear frequency.
29.What does the underlined word “modulates” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Removes. B.Adjusts.
C.Lessens. D.Boosts.
30.How does the prefrontal cortex influence our choices when we’re stressed
A.By seeking rewarding outcome.
B.By maintaining balance.
C.By avoiding negative outcome.
D.By reducing uncertainty.
31.What does the author want to tell us in the text
A.Responses to uncertainty come naturally.
B.Uncertainty gives birth to potential risks.
C.Experiments can predict expected outcomes.
D.Noradrenaline tends to result from uncertainty.
D
Rich variety exists in primates(灵长目动物).Monkeys roll on snowy Japanese mountains, gorillas chew fruit on Sumatra, lemurs jump between trees in Madagascar, and the naked apes—humans—walk proudly on two legs worldwide.Scientists can now study the DNA differences beyond that diversity, thanks to a databank of genomes(基因组) from 233 species.
To understand the good and bad of human evolution—both our extraordinary adaptations and disease-causing changes—scientists must compare the genomes of Homo sapiens(现代人) to our closest evolutionary relatives, the primates. But researchers investigating diverse topics, from contemporary genetic diseases to human origins, have long faced a roadblock when pursuing this approach:While genomic data exists from millions of people, most of the 500-plus primate species never had their genomes read. So,in 2019,Tomàs Marquès-Bonet at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology,in Barcelona,Spain, and other biologists teamed up with disease researchers at the company Illumina, determined to obtain as many primate genomes as possible.
Navigating wilderness and local permitting laws, the international researchers obtained hundreds of blood samples from wild and caged animals in South America,Africa, and Asia.Arranging DNA from these samples and adding data from previous studies, the team built a bank of 809 genomes from individual baboons, gorillas, gibbons, and more, representing nearly half the known primate species.
The data revealed insights about human origins and health,as well as primate conservation, published by more than 100 scientists across 10 papers in Science and Science Advances in June 2023.One study trained artificial intelligence to search human genomes for DNA differences likely to cause disease, based on whether nonhuman primates can live with those variants.According to Marquès-Bonet,“We now have a really good list of the foundations of our species and a good idea of the kind of variations that are tolerated in any primate—including humans.”
32.What can we learn from paragraph 1
A.Primates vary mainly in habitats.
B.Scientists focus on the diversity of primates.
C.There are 233 species of primates in the world.
D.Primate genomes are important for studying the DNA differences.
33.Why did the scientists build the databank of genomes
A.To understand the strength and drawback of human evolution.
B.To cure human’s various genetic diseases.
C.To help human adapt to the environment.
D.To investigate the process of human evolution.
34.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The reasons for building the databank.
B.The process of building the databank.
C.The impacts of building the databank.
D.The difficulties in building the databank.
35.What does Marquès-Bonet think of the databank
A.It still needs to be improved.
B.It is of great value to future research.
C.It is of little help to present research.
D.It is unclear whether it’s beneficial to humans.

History can inspire us to learn more. 40 It’s almost impossible to learn about one historical period without having dozens of related questions.Study the 19th-century England, and you might catch a glimpse of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.Or maybe you end up switching your attention away from novels, and discover the history of romantic poets in England. It can go anywhere for anybody.
A.History grounds us in our roots.
B.History helps us develop our interest.
C.History is an essential part of human civilization.
D.What’s fantastic about history is the way it broadens our horizons.

Regardless of the weather or the distance,Paul Wilson would make sure low-income students in his neighborhood arrived at their college classes on time.
A retired engineer,76-year-old Wilson had been offering free rides to college students for the past eight years.Since he first started volunteering his car to the young people,Wilson had covered an astonishing 64,000 miles, and had countless pleasant and often humorous conversations with the students he transported to and from school. The students who he’d driven had gone on to become physicians, teachers and engineers, but what they’d also got out of their time in school was finding a role model and a friend in Wilson. Some students even called him “Grandpa”.
Tina Stern received rides from Wilson for all her four years in college, and the trips meant much more to her than just free transportation.“It’s not just a ride;you’re not just sitting there in awkward silence or with your headphones on,” Stern said.“He asks you questions and actually remembers the answers,so the next time you ride with him,he’ll check on those things.”
Wilson often went beyond to ensure the welfare and safety of the students. If they had problems with registration,Wilson was there to assist them.If they ran out of certain daily necessities,Wilson would drive to the nearest store and purchase what was needed. For many students, riding with Wilson had allowed them to complete their education—but according to Wilson,he benefited just as much from the experience.“I just love driving, and I love these kids,” Wilson said.“It’s such a privilege to be a part of these kids’ lives, getting to know them and hearing their stories.”
One day,Stern came across Wilson and his wife in the hospital, where she knew Wilson was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默病).

M:You know, I have to do schoolwork and read books as well.
W:Well,I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health.
M:Why
W:Having too many days off can affect our study and even our life. And many students’ parents like mine have to go to work. If students get too many days off, they might be at home alone too much. This could make some students’ mental health issues worse.
M:But some students have serious mental health challenges. How can they get help
W: I do think a mental health lecture can play a vital role in students’ daily life and help to protect them from mental illness.
M:That sounds like a good idea.

Hello,everyone,
Among all the foreign travellers,my favourite is Marco Polo,a well-known Italian traveller who travelled along the ancient Silk Road to China in the 13th century.
He lived in China for 17 years, during which time he visited many parts of China and was astounded to find how beautiful and mighty China was.He introduced Chinese culture and scientific inventions to other parts of the world.
In my opinion,Marco Polo was really a great traveller, whose mission was to accelerate the exchange of different cultures and spread the seeds of civilisation.
Thank you.

参考范文
“He isn’t what he used to be,” his wife told Stern.“He’s still the same kind and caring man,but the disease has taken a toll on his memory.” Stern felt a deep sense of sadness. She couldn’t imagine the man who had been such a constant and supportive presence in her life struggling with his own.“There must be something I could do for them,” she said to herself.
Stern and other students volunteered to help Wilson. They organized a schedule to visit him regularly, bringing him homemade meals, reading to him,and sharing stories of their lives in and out of college. They also helped with his medical appointments and errands, ensuring that he and his wife were not alone during this challenging time.It was their way of giving back to the man who had given so much to them.“We’re here for you,Grandpa,” they would say, offering him the warmth and care he had once shown them. The bond between Wilson and his “adopted” students had become a two-way street of love and support,a testament to the enduring impact of his selfless acts.
