The first time I questioned the conventional wisdom on the nature of a healthy diet, it was
40 years ago, and the subject was salt. Researchers claimed that salt supplementation (补充) was
unnecessary after intense exercise, and this advice was passed on by health reporters. I recalled
high school football practices in hot days. Without salt pills, I couldn’t make it through a two-hour
practice.
Although sports nutritionists have recommended consuming more salt when we sweat hard
in physical activity, the message that we should avoid salt at all other times remains strong. And
salt is still considered fatal.
So why have we been told that salt is so deadly The advice has always sounded reasonable:
Eat more salt, and your body keeps water to maintain a stable concentration of sodium (钠 ) in
your blood. This is why salty food tends to make us thirsty: We drink more; we keep water. The
result can be a temporary increase in blood pressure. The scientific question is whether this
temporary phenomenon leads to permanent problems: If we eat too much salt for years, does it
raise our blood pressure, cause high blood pressure, then strokes, and then kill us It makes sense,
but it’s only a hypothesis (假设), which has never been proved but unfortunately upgraded to a
fact.
In reality, eating less salt can worsen health. Decades ago, Italian researchers’ clinical trials
reported that reducing salt consumption increased the risk of dying early and that reducing sodium
to a government-recommended “safe upper limit” is actually harmful.
Supporters of the eat-less-salt campaign tend to deal with this confusing evidence by
implying that anyone raising it is a shill (同谋) for the food industry (widely criticized for adding
salt to processed foods to improve taste). When several government agencies held a hearing last
November to discuss how to ensure Americans eat less salt, anti-salt supporters argued that the
latest reports suggesting damage from lower-salt diets should simply be ignored. This attitude,
which lacks respect for science, has been the norm for the anti-salt campaign for decades. Maybe
now is the time for it to change.
18.What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.A man of high intelligence. B.Knowledge learnt through work.
C.A belief that most people have. D.Experience gained from sports.
19.What do the Italian researchers’ clinical trials indicate
A.Eating less salt can pose a threat to our health.
B.Eating less salt can prevent us from dying early.
C.We need to eat relatively more salt on a daily basis.
D.We should follow the government policy and reduce salt intake.
20.What do the eat-less-salt campaigners do with the opposing evidence
A.They publicly blame it on the food industry.
B.They suggest the food industry is behind it.
C.They report it to the government agencies.
D.They treat it with some respect.
21.Which is the writer’s attitude towards the anti-salt campaign
A.Approving. B.Indifferent. C.Skeptical. D.Neutral.
Many of us are sickened by spiders and their furry legs, or even feel afraid of them. We
avoid touching or getting close to them. But spiders are far more complex than we can imagine.
According to a new study, each leg of a spider functions like a semi-independent “computer”,
equipped with sensors reading the environment and causing movements accordingly. This allows
spiders to quickly build perfect webs with surprising efficiency. Researchers have identified
simple rules governing this complex behavior, which could one day be applied to robotics.
The study focuses on “morphological computation (形态计算 )”, a concept where body
parts control functions without relying on the brain for instructions. Examples include the human
knee-jerk reflex (膝跳反射) and walking. “There’s a quick path, and the brain doesn’t even know
what’s happening,” explains Oxford biologist Fritz Vollrath, the lead author of the study.
Roboticists are particularly interested in morphological computation because it saves
computing power and time. However, few studies have explored this phenomenon in nature.
Spiders, Vollrath notes, are ideal for bridging this gap. They are easy to observe, and their
web-building behavior provides clear insights into design changes. Additionally, spiders can
regenerate broken legs, making them perfect subjects for experiments.
Vollrath and his co-author, computer scientist Thiemo Krink, filmed and digitized the
movements of cross spiders with partially regenerated, half-length legs. These spiders built webs
as quickly and perfectly as those with full-length legs. If the brain were calculating how to
compensate for shorter legs, there would be measurable delays in their actions. Instead, the study
suggests that a spider’s leg receives basic commands from the brain but adjusts its movements
based on local input from sensors like hairs and slits in the body covering.
To test these findings, the researchers programmed a virtual spider simulation. Vollrath
plans to build a physical spider robot next. “This work is fascinating,” says Cecilia Laschi, a
bio-roboticist at the National University of Singapore.” It not only reveals more about spiders but
also advances our understanding of morphological computation. Basic science like this could lead
to incredible innovations.”
22.What does the underlined word “semi-independent” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Entirely dependent. B.Partially self-governing.
C.Completely autonomous. D.Fully controlled by the brain.
23.Why does the study focus on morphological computation
A.It slows robot efficiency. B.It cuts brain instructions.
C.It helps body parts control functions. D.It facilitates spiders to bridge the gap.
24.What can be implied about spiders’ web-building ability
A.It relies more on legs than brain. B.It becomes slower with shorter legs.
C.It requires complex brain processing. D.It depends on actions with full-length legs.
25.What is the overall significance of this study
A.It reveals spider behavior complexity. B.It demonstrates robotics application potential.
C.It shows basic science leading to innovations. D.It provides insights and inspirations for
robotics.
The company SpaceX has already launched hundreds of its Starlink satellites, with plans to
put as many as 42,000 of them in the Earth’s orbit. Its goal is to provide high-speed Internet to
billions of people. Moving toward that kind of access is important, but it comes at a cost. Shining
with reflected sunlight, these first orbiters, sent up in the past year, are brighter than 99 percent of
the 5,000 or so other satellites now circling Earth, and obviously there are going to be a lot more.
This rapid increase is bad for astronomy: the probability of a Starlink satellite crossing a telescope’
s field of view and ruining an observation will be quite high near sunrise and sunset, when the
objects are most brightly illuminated. For that reason, more than 1,800 of my fellow astronomers
have called for governments to protect the night sky.
This artificial large constellation, and others being planned, will influence more than
astronomy. They would then be about as numerous as the brightest stars that are easily seen above
the horizon-the same stars used to trace the constellations.
In response to protests, SpaceX has promised to address the visibility problem by, for
example, applying experimental coatings—essentially painting the satellites black—but the
company’s launch schedule remains unchanged. And the satellites’ illuminated surfaces are
mostly their solar panels—exactly the part that cannot be painted over.
Unfortunately, at present no laws govern how bright a single satellite can be, let alone
thousands of them together. It has been suggested that the Federal Communications Commission’s
attitude that satellites will have no important influence on the environment could be challenged in
court, but even then, one nation’s laws do not hinder another country’s launches. Space has no
borders, and the sky will need to be protected from orbital illumination at an international level.
When I was growing up in Montana, it was a game to be the first to find a moving satellite
among a host of stars in the night sky. Soon it could be a game to recognize the constellations
behind a swarm of moving points of light. Astronomy will survive; I am much more afraid that we
are all about to lose the very thing that inspired us to become an astronomer.
26.What does the author think of the SpaceX’s painting the satellites black
A.It is creative. B.It is impractical. C.It is difficult. D.It is unsafe.
27.What does the underlined word “hinder” in the last but one paragraph most probably mean
A.Update. B.Approve. C.Prevent. D.Record.
28.What does the author mainly want to show in the last paragraph
A.His dream of becoming an astronomer.
B.His concern about the future of astronomy.
C.His prediction of the development of technology.
D.His preference for the game of identifying constellations.
29.What would be the best title for the text
A.SpaceX has a big plan B.Preserve the night sky
C.Astronomers struggle to live D.Regain the glory of astronomy
Instant noodles are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Picture eating
them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort But many believe they’re just junk
food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you
prepare them.
The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them:
pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salt seasoning packets. These flavor
packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂 ), making this version
unbalanced and unhealthy.
Actually, plain instant noodles aren’t terrible. They’re fried during production (which adds
some oil and calories), but they fill you up well and provide quick energy when you’re hungry. To
make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, drain excess starchy
water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Crucially, use only half the seasoning packet to reduce
salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg or tofu while cooking. This
boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This transforms them into a balanced meal.
So, are instant noodles junk food If prepared lazily with all the seasoning (调料) and no
extras, yes. But when cooked with less seasoning plus vegetables and protein, they become a
decent occasional meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once or twice a week as part
of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary than people think —
just upgrade your cooking method!
30.What determines whether instant noodles are unhealthy or not
A.The cooking time. B.The time of eating.
C.The preparation method. D.The balanced seasoning.
31.What is the major cause of unhealthy instant noodles
A.The dried noodles. B.The flavor packets.
C.The boiling water. D.The amount of oil.
32.What is the main purpose of the third paragraph
A.To defend instant noodles. B.To list harmful additives.
C.To warn about health dangers. D.To give cooking instructions.
33.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Instant noodles are hard to cook. B.Instant noodles are a perfect meal.
C.Instant noodles are not all waste. D.The less instant noodles, the healthier.

Whether it’s studying for exams or struggling with an essay, we’ve all been under
enormous stress at some point. When it gets a bit overwhelming, we can reach a level of
exhaustion that is unbearable — the dreaded burnout. 34
According to ‘Psychology Today’, burnout isn’t just caused by working long hours; it is
more about prolonged or repeated exposure to a stressful situation. The result can be feelings of
cynicism (愤世嫉俗) and depression. A feeling of loss of control can create a conflict with the
sense of self, which can lead to burnout. 35 Unexpectedly, this means that trying to be
more efficient can result in a reduction in our productivity.
But what can we do to avoid the evils of burnout Well, there are some tips that may help
you. 36 A feeling that the task is achievable and that you are capable of succeeding
means that a difficult task might be less struggling.
Finding ways to express your creative side may help. Not everyone has creative aspects to
their jobs, and, therefore, they need to find other outlets. 37 All of this may help to
separate them from the overwhelming stress that may exist in their working life.
38 The consequence is that you are surrounded by a cleaner and more positive
environment. This, in turn, leads to another tip, which is to have healthy and positive thoughts.
Having a positive mental attitude towards everything you do means that you may feel more
capable as well.
In general, burnout has psychological effects that can impact heavily on your work and life.
Taking steps to avoid burning out can benefit not just us, but our bosses and families.
A.Travelling or reading is strongly recommended.
B.They could paint, write or take part in local theatre.
C.Experiencing burnout is normal in high-stress tasks.
D.Suffering from burnout can prevent our creativity and productivity.
E.Looking after yourself and your surroundings can also be beneficial.
F.However, that feeling of exhaustion is not just physical but also mental.
G.The belief that you have the ability to complete a project may assist you.

My husband and I cherish experiencing life through our children’s eyes. It’s a magical
journey to witness them exploring their world, with each discovery lighting up their faces with
wonder.
Last summer, while bathed in the warm sunshine outdoors, our eldest daughter, Zoe,
urgently waved me over to the doorway. There, huddled beneath the steps, was a tiny, trembling
baby red squirrel, its fur a soft reddish-brown.
We watched from a distance, careful not to startle it or scare off its mother. After a long
wait and a thorough search around our house for any signs of a nest or the mother squirrel, we
sadly realized the little creature was lost and alone.
Shivering violently, it looked weak, thin, and desperately hungry. We tried to find an expert
for help, but unfortunately, there were no wildlife specialists in our area. After a quick research,
we decided the best way to save the squirrel was to care for it ourselves. So we rushed to the local
store for milk and supplies. Further study taught us how much to feed it, how to tell its age, when
and how to wean (断奶) it, and that we should release it once it could survive on its own.
Our daughters and I took turns feeding “Squirt”. Zoe took on most of the responsibility. She
patiently taught it to drink from a bottle and even woke up at night for feedings.
To our great relief, Squirt soon grew healthy and strong. Within weeks, he became lively
and energetic, playfully running around the girls, and curling up on them to sleep. Before long, he
was successfully weaned onto solid food and ready to return to the wild.
His first outdoor adventures were adorable. Like a timid child, he’d play in the grass and
then quickly rush back to Zoe for safety. Soon, she taught him to climb trees and gather nest
materials, guiding him toward an independent life. We knew it was time for him to fully embrace
his wild life.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150个左右;
The day of Squirt’s final departure arrived.

According to a new study, each leg of a spider functions like a
semi-independent “computer”, equipped with sensors reading the environment and causing
根据第二段中“The study focuses on “morphological computation (形态计算)”,
a concept where body parts control functions without relying on the brain for instructions.(这项研
These spiders built webs as quickly and perfectly as those with
full-length legs. If the brain were calculating how to compensate for shorter legs, there would be
measurable delays in their actions. Instead, the study suggests that a spider’s leg receives basic
commands from the brain but adjusts its movements based on local input from sensors like hairs
and slits in the body covering.(这些蜘蛛织网的速度和完美程度与腿完整的蜘蛛一样。
故选 A。
Researchers have identified simple rules governing this complex
behavior, which could one day be applied to robotics.(研究人员已经确定了控制这种复杂行为
This work is
fascinating,” says Cecilia Laschi, a bio-roboticist at the National University of Singapore.” It not
only reveals more about spiders but also advances our understanding of morphological
computation. Basic science like this could lead to incredible innovations.”(新加坡国立大学的生

In response to protests, SpaceX has promised to address the
visibility problem by, for example, applying experimental coatings—essentially painting the
satellites black—but the company’s launch schedule remains unchanged. And the satellites’
illuminated surfaces are mostly their solar panels—exactly the part that cannot be painted over.(作
Unfortunately, at present no laws
govern how bright a single satellite can be, let alone thousands of them together.(不幸的是,目前
It has been suggested that the Federal Communications
Commission’s attitude that satellites will have no important influence on the environment could be
challenged in court, but even then, one nation’s laws do not”以及后文“Space has no borders, and
the sky will need to be protected from orbital illumination at an international level.(太空是没有边
也不会阻止另一个国家的发射,故画线词意思是“阻止”。A. Update.更新;B. Approve.支持;
C. Prevent.阻止;D. Record.
When I was growing up in Montana, it was a game to be the first
to find a moving satellite among a host of stars in the night sky. Soon it could be a game to
recognize the constellations behind a swarm of moving points of light. Astronomy will survive; I
am much more afraid that we are all about to lose the very thing that inspired us to become an
For that reason, more than 1,800 of my fellow astronomers have
called for governments to protect the night sky.(因此,我的 1800多名天文学家同行呼吁政府保

The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how
you prepare them.(事实上,它们是否不健康完全取决于你如何准备它们。)”
The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common
way people make them: pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salt seasoning
packets. These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives
making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.(主要问题不在于面条本身,而在于人们制作面
To make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles
first, drain excess starchy (含有淀粉的) water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Crucially, use
only half the seasoning packet to reduce salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein
like an egg or tofu while cooking. This boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠).
This transforms them into a balanced meal.(为了使它们更健康,要正确烹饪:先把面条煮熟,
So, are instant noodles junk food If prepared lazily with all the
seasoning (调料) and no extras, yes. But when cooked with less seasoning plus vegetables and
protein, they become a decent occasional meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once
or twice a week as part of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary
than people think — just upgrade your cooking method!(那么,方便面是垃圾食品吗?

65.The day of Squirt’s final departure arrived. Zoe held him gently, tears glistening in her eyes as
she placed him beneath their favorite oak tree. Squirt hesitated, sniffing the familiar scent of her
palm before scampering up the trunk. Halfway up, he paused and glanced back, his bushy tail
twitching. “He’ll be okay,” I whispered, squeezing Zoe’s shoulder. With renewed determination,
the little squirrel ascended into the canopy, disappearing among rustling leaves. We stood silently,

our hearts swelling with bittersweet pride.
One spring morning after a year, as we sat on the porch, a familiar figure caught our eye. A plump
red squirrel with distinctive white ear tufts bounded across the lawn, followed by three miniature
versions of himself. Zoe gasped in recognition when he paused to nibble an acorn, his intelligent
eyes meeting ours. The squirrel family soon retreated to the oak, where fresh leaves partially
revealed a carefully woven nest. “He’s teaching them just like I taught him,” Zoe murmured,
sunlight catching her smile. Watching the lively scene, we understood that love’s legacy continues
through every nurtured life.
