The winter solstice(冬至日) is the exact moment when half of the Earth is tilted (倾斜) the farthest away from the sun. In the Northern Hemisphere (北半球), the winter solstice usually falls on December 21 or 22. On this day, the Northern Hemisphere has the least sunlight and the shortest daytime of the year, while the Southern Hemisphere has the most sunlight and the longest daytime. That’s because the seasons are reversed below the Equator. For example, when it is winter in China, it is summer in Australia.
People often think the winter solstice is the coldest day of the year. But actually the coldest temperatures are still at least a month away. That’s because the Earth’s land and water take time to cool down.
Many cultures mark the winter solstice. Let’s take a look!
China
In China, people have celebrated “Dongzhi” as an important tradition since ancient times. People often say “Dongzhi is as important as the Spring Festival”. On this day, family gathering is a must. In northern China, people usually eat jiaozi. In some parts of southern China, families enjoy tangyuan, which stands for reunion and happiness.
Scandinavia
Celebrating “Yule” is an ancient tradition for Scandinavians (people who live in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden). In ancient times, people celebrated the holiday to welcome the return of the sun god. Nowadays, people gather for the festival, which lasts several days. They enjoy grand feasts, drink spiced wine and build straw Yule goats as festive symbols.
Britain
In Britain, some people still observe the old traditional custom of cutting mistletoe (槲寄生). It’s a sacred (神圣的) plant with small shiny white berries that grows on other trees. People say it has healing (治愈的) power. It is also a common tradition to hang mistletoe at home for good luck and health during the winter festival.
48. Which of the following shows the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere
49. Why isn’t the winter solstice the coldest day of the year
A. Because the Earth is still tilted towards the sun.
B. Because daylight hours change slowly over time.
C. Because the Earth’s surface does not cool at once.
D. Because half of the Earth is tilted the farthest away from the sun.

Have you ever wondered why some running shoes and bikes are so light and strong They most likely use a special material called carbon fiber (碳纤维), which is also found in some parts of modern planes. This amazing material is changing our life in many ways, and China just made a big new step in its development.
On March 11, 2026, China achieved a big success. It unveiled(发布) the world’s first T1200-grade carbon fiber. This is a big achievement and shows China’s great progress in advanced materials.
Developed by China National Building Material Group, T1200 carbon fiber is among the most advanced achievements of modern technology. This black material is thinner than one-tenth of a human hair. But it is 10 times stronger than ordinary steel, and only a quarter of its weight. Most importantly, it does not rust (生锈) at all. Unlike steel, it is made of carbon, so it can never rust, even in wet environments. It can last a very long time. Because it is light, strong and rust-proof, it is widely used in many high-tech fields which include sixth-generation fighter planes, commercial aerospace, low-altitude aircraft and humanoid robots. It helps solve important material problems for advanced equipment.
However, it is not easy to produce this material in large numbers. It needs very high-quality fibers and careful control of the whole production process, especially high-temperature heating. It also needs specially designed machines and smart cost control. Large production needs a lot of materials and high energy use. Now China has built a strong system that connects market needs, new technology and industrial support. China has become the first country to achieve 100-ton-level production of such carbon fiber.
New materials are key to new industries (产业). They are very important to the scientific and technological development of our country. T1200 carbon fiber reflects Chinese creativity and the development of modern technology. As it develops further, it will bring more changes to our life and help us build a better future.
56. What’s the purpose of the writer’s question at the beginning of the passage
A. To test the readers’ knowledge. B. To show his interest in running shoes.
C. To introduce the topic of carbon fiber. D. To compare different kinds of materials.
57. What advantage does T1200 carbon fiber have over ordinary steel?
A. It’s thinner and easier to get in daily life. B. It uses less energy and time in production.
C. It’s stronger, lighter and longer-lasting. D. It has a much simpler production process.
58. Which of the following shows the use of T1200 carbon fiber
A. Producing high-quality mirrors.
B. Building strong but light parts for rockets.
C. Making very heavy boxes for storing valuable things.
D. Making inexpensive, soft and comfortable white T-shirts.
59. What is the best title for the passage
A. Advanced Materials: The Future of High-Tech Industry
B. Modern Technology: Ways to Solve Material Problems
C. Light and Strong Products: A New Choice for Daily Life
D. T1200 Carbon Fiber: China’s Great Technological Achievement

Have you ever had such an experience When we have a task to finish, we often put it off until the last minute, like putting off writing reports or preparing for exams, even though we know we should take action right away. This is called procrastination(拖延症).
New research shows procrastination is a problem of self-control and poor mood management. People usually put off tasks they care about because they are afraid of not doing well or do not know how to start. They worry that an imperfect result will hurt their sense of self-worth. So people put off important tasks and choose more enjoyable but less important activities instead. But when facing the deadline, they may sit for hours feeling bad but still cannot start, and their strong wish to finish can even make them more stressed.
Procrastination brings harm to people. For students, it lowers their grades and may lead to cheating. For workers, it reduces work efficiency and income. What’s worse, it harms mental and physical health, causing anxiety, poor sleep and even increasing the risk of heart problems.
To break this bad cycle, we should first find out what stops us. If we feel anxious, we should relax first instead of aiming for the best in the beginning. We can also break big tasks into small, clear steps and use tools like to-do lists. Besides, we can use calendars to plan our work or study. And don’t worry about the mistakes during the process because they help us improve.
Procrastination gets in the way of our progress. It is time for us to say goodbye to it. By taking action bravely, we will slowly take control of our time and tasks and finish what we have planned. Where there is a will, there is a way, and we can surely make it happen.
